Read late/early during the night. KU book

Sorry, this is just 'meh' and I dnf'd in the end.

The formatting is 'off' for starters - there are no indents for new paragraphs, just double spaces which leaves a lot of white space on some pages and makes me think each new paragraph is a new scene.

The story seems to be all over the place at times. In the prologue Barrington seems to die but then we hear that he is seriously ill. Then we are introduced to Sophie and her Aunt and then to Sir Jonathon Colbourne and his sister and brother (who seem to be remarkably forgotten in the rest of the story) There really needed to be a better link between Barrington and Sophie IMO.

Sophie ends up with a surly ladies maid - Dinah - who ends up acting as her chaperone when Sophie travels to see her uncle Barrington. There is a coach accident and for some unknown reason Dinah pretends to be Sophie. This was never really explained, and I kept waiting for some dark sub-plot involving the fire years ago which killed Barrington's entire family apart from Sophie.

The plot was okay, but really needed tightening up - there is NO way Sophie would not have known the duties of a ladies maid. And going out to cut firewood? That was pretty stupid really.

I think a good editor would have tightened up the writing and made the characters far more believable and ensured that the reader isn't left thinking ... Why??
