A working journalist for more than twenty years, he has served in all stages of the profession, from being a night shift reporter to editor in chief in various newspapers.
In addition to having written columns in several Turkish newspapers, including Hürriyet, Milliyet and Radikal, Altan has produced news programming for television. He worked as the editor in chief and lead columnist of Taraf, a daily Turkish newspaper, until he resigned from his post in 2012.
He was fired from Milliyet after writing a column on 17 April 1995 titled "Atakurd", which presented an alternate history of Turkey.
In September 2008 when Altan published an article titled "Oh, My Brother" dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, he was charged under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code for "denigrating Turkishness". The judicial claim was initiated by the far-right "Great Union Party."

MA ORA SIAMO QUI, IN QUESTO MONDO
Di spalle Toshiro Mifune, il samurai che sfida la cittadina giapponese.
Appena ho iniziato a leggere, e per tutto il tempo della lettura, ho sempre tenuto con me l’immagine di Toshiro Mifune che arriva nel villaggio di "Yōjinbō - La sfida del samurai", e di Clint Eastwood che entra nel paesello in groppa al suo mulo (Per un pugno di dollari): anche qui si comincia con uno straniero senza nome che arriva in un paese.
E anche questo paese, come quelli dei due film che ho menzionato, è in guerra: una guerra, o piuttosto una faida tra famiglie rivali che si conoscono da sempre, e finiranno con lo scannarsi a vicenda fino al last man standing.
Clint Eastwood arriva al paese senza nome.
Il paese odora di morte e marijuana, lo straniero è un romanziere in cerca della sua smarrita vena narrativa.
L’uomo, guidando per la Turchia dalle parti del monte Tauro, vede un cartello che recita “mare in vendita”, e proprio come avrei fatto anch’io, lo segue e arriva in questo paese che rimane senza nome per tutte le 414 pagine di questo noir esistenziale.
Questo potrebbe essere il paese nel quale Altan ambienta il suo romanzo, sulla costa prospiciente Cipro.
Succede di tutto e di più.
Lo scrittore, che dice di non avere successo, nel paese trova invece due lettori, che sono due suoi fan: una donna bella come la luna, che diventa subito una passiona feroce - l’altro lettore è il sindaco della cittadina, innamorato ricambiato della bellissima donna.
Inizia un triangolo, con grandi scene di sesso, insistite eleganti sontuose raffinate, come già succedeva in L’amore è come la ferita di una spada.
C’è un pizzico di gelosia, o forse anche più di un pizzico.
Ma le donne sono più di una: c'è la matriarca di una delle ricche famiglie coinvolte nella faida, matura amante insaziabile – c'è la saggia simpatica disinvolta prostituta del paese – e anche la divertente governante che parla con gli oggetti. Sono tutte attratte da questo scrittore che scrive di donne, e dai suoi libri sembra comprenderle a fondo, sicuramente le apprezza appieno, e ha un vorace appetito sessuale.
Guardie del corpo, pistole, incendi, spari, morti, assassini, agguati.
E anche la Turchia al suo meglio: il Mediterraneo che regna, oliveti secolari che scintillano e poi vanno a fuoco, minareti e moschee, imam, caffè alla turca, tè, spezie, banchetti, prelibatezze culinarie, internet e chat roventi, eccetera eccetera.
Quando nel romanzo si parla della città potrebbe essere questa, Adana.
Il personaggio meno interessante di questo buon romanzo, quello che quando entra in scena rallenta sempre il ritmo, spinge a perdere la concentrazione e ad attenuare l’attenzione, è dio. Anzi, Dio, come lo scrive Altan.
L’io narrante, seduto sulla panchina della piazza del paese, nell’ultima notte, in attesa degli eventi finali, si rivolge spesso in dialogo a dio, come lo scrivo io, gli da del tu, gli parla. In queste troppe pagine quasi sempre mi perde, mi fa ritenere che lo faccia troppo, troppo a lungo e troppo spesso.
È affascinante considerare dio come un collega scrittore, la vita e il mondo come un romanzo, quel che segue alla vita, morte, inferno o quello che è, come il ‘sequel’: ma come recita la saggezza popolare, il gioco è divertente finché dura poco.
È affascinante il gioco della trama scritta, o non ancora composta, dei personaggi tracciata ma che può sfuggire di mano allo scrittore: ma alla decima volta che ci torna su, so già quello che dirà.
È affascinante considerare dio creatore anche un creativo, proprio come un romanziere. Ma, di nuovo,….
La campagna turca dove Altan ambienta la sua storia.
È facile leggere questo libro come uno specchio (metafora?) della situazione attuale della Turchia e dello stesso Altan, rinchiuso nel carcere di Silivri dalla fine del settembre 2016 (nel frattempo ha già ricevuto una condanna all’ergastolo aggravato, ma ci potrebbero scappare un altro paio di ergastoli).
Il paese dilaniato nella lotta fratricida, proprio come le piazze e le proteste che l’opposizione a Erdogan continua a riempire e lanciare; la condanna che aleggia sul protagonista sin dal principio (e il titolo italiano da via subito il succo della trama, sì, lo scrittore è proprio l’assassino di cui si parlerà – il titolo originale sarebbe invece La fine del gioco) proprio come la condanna che tiene lo scrittore, quello reale, Ahmet Altan, dentro la celle di un carcere; basta poco a segnare definitivamente la vita dello scrittore della finzione letteraria, seguire un cartello di vendesi, incontrare una donna, proprio come è bastato un “messaggio subliminale” per finire in carcere nella Turchia reale, restarci un anno e mezzo senza sapere perché, beccarsi un ergastolo (aggravato), rischiarne altri; il paese che di giorno ha una faccia da esibire, e di notte si nasconde nelle chat virtuali, come la nazione turca che cerca di darsi una veste presentabile per farsi accettare dai paesi europei, e poi in casa (ma anche fuori casa, vedi curdi e Siria) si comporta come la più bieca delle dittature;…
Ma anche no: è possibile godersi questa buona robusta lettura come un semplice bel romanzo a base di raki, sesso, amore, violenza, paura.

“Il paese dorme…”
…mentre lo scrittore si accascia sulla panchina del parco.
La mente annebbiata, confusa.
Ha appena commesso un omicidio…
Così comincia il romanzo che Ahmet Altan, scrittore turco, pubblicò nel 2015.
L’anno dopo fu imprigionato per aver collaborato (mandando messaggi subliminali!) al fallito golpe del luglio 2016.
Lo scorso ottobre c’è stata la sentenza definitiva: ergastolo.
Non posso nascondere di essere arrivata a questa lettura per ragioni politiche e civiche.
Lo scrittore, protagonista e voce narrante, non ha un nome proprio come non lo ha la cittadina in cui, per un caso fortuito, si ritrova a soggiornare.
L’uomo è definito dalla sua professione che diventa il lasciapassare per farsi accettare dai residenti altrimenti ostili ad ogni forestiero.
Il luogo, invece, si definisce perché odora "di morte e marijuana".
Una serie di omicidi efferati a causa di faide tra clan e lo stordimento –apparentemente causato dalla sostanza – che annebbia la mente di tutti per cui nessun vede e sente niente.
Lo scrittore rievoca il suo arrivo e gli eventi seguenti che lo vedono testimone di omicidi e protagonista di avventure ad alto tasso erotico (coincidenza vuole che nella cittadina tutte le donne siano ninfomani…).
Il tutto è intercalato da dialoghi con dio.
Sono colloqui che giocano sull’immagine dello scrittore che da soggetto diventa oggetto di un romanzo più ampio, ossia quello scritto da dio.
La nube di peccato che aleggia su questa metaforica cittadina è quella che la religione ha creato per incatenare l’uomo.
Ma se le conversazioni con la muta divinità, inizialmente, sono interessanti man mano hanno un effetto stancante per la ripetizione dei concetti e l’ossessività soprattutto di interrogativi che non possono avere risposta.
Ho trovato affascinante l’immagine di questa cittadina impazzita come specchio di una nazione così storicamente piena di contraddizioni (con quel suo stare tra occidente ed oriente) caduta in questo vortice di violenza e repressione inaccettabile.
Credo, però, che queste siano considerazioni legate al caso penale e all’ingiustizia che questa scrittore sta pagando ad alto prezzo.
Se devo attenermi, invece, a quello che ho letto devo ammettere che il coinvolgimento non è stato tale da indurmi a metterlo tra i libri preferiti…

This novel starts with a dilemma that slowly unravels in the nature of J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace: A Novel and Graham Greene's classic The Quiet American. Endgame is about a middle-aged writer who retreats to a Turkish town in the countryside as an escape from the hustle and bustle of living in the city for so long. On the way in he strikes up a relationship with a fragile girl named Xuhal. They continue to talk to one another through late night online chats and then meet regularly in public. As the writer's affection and love for her grows, Xuhal's former lover (the mayor of this town) grows jealous and a violent competition for her hand ensues.
You get contemporary Turkish life and small-town politics with this story, with chapters that follow moments of violence (local hits at the cafes) where the narrator contemplates if God is making a game of his life. The unnamed narrator is untrustworthy, but I liked how much he operated within this town. Everyone in the town is suspicious of him, but they in some way or another need him because he acts as an intermediary.
I think Altan is a fantastic voice from Turkey, one that channels certain frustrations with Turkish corruption through fiction. I highly recommend this book.

The unnamed narrator is untrustworthy, but I liked how much he operated within this town. Everyone in the town is suspicious of him, but they in some way or another need him because he acts as an intermediary.
I think Altan is a fantastic voice from Turkey, one that channels certain frustrations with Turkish corruption through fiction. I highly recommend this book.

Досега гледах на турската литература през две призми – мелодраматичната “Любов” на Елиф Шафак, която четох преди няколко години и дори харесах (бях влюбен, не разумен човек тогаз), и “Името ми е Червен” на Орхан Памук, която зарязах след тегави петдесетина страница, толкова бавно и приказно се провлачваше, че просто не издържах. И когато зачетох Ахмет Алтан с “Край на играта”, изненадата ми бе пълна. Силен, дълбок, смислен роман, с бързо развитие на действието, градация на напрежението и смазващо силен край, който ми напомни на… Стивън Кинг, ако щете вярвайте. В “Неизживени спомени” архетипният му злодей Лийланд Гонт дойде в идиличното градче Касъл Рок и до края на книгата то се превърна в кипящ ад, по подобен начин и в “Под купола” Честърс Мил, отрязан от света, буквално избухна – така и тук главният герой, непопулярен писател, намира малко кътче от рая на брега на морето, но неговата поява става катализатор на серия от драматични промени, водещи до истинска война.

I love his writing. I'd give five stars to his writing because it's bloody beautiful. The plot of this story though, it's kinda bleh. There was no suspense, no excitement. Nothing I really felt, anyway. Gave up halfway.

Yorgan altına giripte tüm gerçeklerle hala yüzleşemeyen nice Zuhal'lerle dolu bir hayatta yaşıyoruz..Ahmet Altan, çogumuzun içinde saklı hisleri ve Günahlarımızın bizleri nasıl kaynaştırdığını bence en uygun biçimde anlatmaya çalışmıs..güzel bir eser olmuş..
Benim isteklerimi engelleyecek veya sorgulayacak başka bir insanın başka bir iradenin yada başka bir isteğin varlığı hep beni tedirgin eder...
Tanrı, hep aynı emri verdi, "Şehvetten sakının," bu emre uyamadık, çelişkilerden hoşlanan Tanrı kendi emriyle bile çatışacak kadar güçlü bir şehvet duygusu vermişti hepimize, bu zavallı kullarından o görkemli yaratıcılığının ürünü olan şehvetle dövüşmesini istemişti, kim Tanrının yarattıklarıyla baş edebilir ki, hiçbirimiz edemedik, en masumlarımız bile rüyalarında günaha bulaştı, emre uyamadık ama şehvete karşı dikkatli olmayı, şehvetle boğuşmayı, onu bastırmak için uğraşmayı, ondan kaçmaya çalışmayı öğrendik, yenilsek de zayıf bir kalkanımız, ince bir zırhımız oldu.
Görünenin gerçeğe bu kadar uzak olması,görünen her seyden şüphe etmeye yol açıyordu...
Yine yüreğimizin, beynimizin ve bedenlerimizin en gizli, derin köşelerinde saklı, sadece kendimiz ile konuşabileceğimiz bir çok duygu ve düşünceyi kaliteli bir anlatım dili ile kelimelere döküvermiş...

"Край на играта" от Ахмет Алтан ми е първото и категорично турско разочарование! Историята е повече от слаба - писател-романист, отива в затънтено турско градче. Пък се влюбва в местната мома, пред очите му стават някакви убийства. Не спира да разказва за дебелите глезени и баджаци на домашната си слугиня и как ги видял изпод пеньоара й...
Една от историите в книгата е и тайно имане - на паша или падишах, което цялото село търси, та то носи нещастие - едни се удавили, други измрели в катастрофа...
Много ниска топка, много! Не препоръчвам книгата на никой - пълна загуба на време.

October 14, 2018A middle aged, not particularly successful writer moves from Instanbul to a small resort town on (presumably) the Black Sea and is destroyed by its erotic secrets and nefarious crime lords. At its core a solid if unspectacular crime novel in the James M Cain vain, its gussyed up with a lot of theological/philosophical ramblings which I confess I couldn’t quite feel were on par with, say, Ecclesiastes. Altan, also a journalist, is currently serving a life sentence basically for pissing off Turkey’s increasingly dictatorial leader, but his personal heroism aside I can’t say I loved this.

This book opens with a man on a beach of a Turkish coastal town who is holding a gun having killed someone and he waiting for the repercussions which are more than likely going to be his death given what we subsequently learn about the events that lead to the situation and the volatile atmosphere.
The narrator then tells how he his a writer who retreats to the town to write, on the plane he meets and is attracted to Zuhal a woman who it transpires is the love of the towns mayor Mustafa. In the local café he gradually becomes a figure of both interest and suspicion as this is a town of violent rivalries and paranoia because of a belief in gold buried at the top of a mountain.
The narrator then enters into sexual relations with a number of women and much of the book becomes an account of his sexual encounters and sexual fixations and I found the portrayal of women uncomfortable as they become objects of the narrator's lust and of course the narrator is not backwards at describing his sexual talents.
Thus I was conflicted as the story itself had the grains of an interesting tale as the rival groups in the town start to tear the area apart in violence and the narrator is the bystander in the middle who has the ear of all the main players.
I found some parts distracting particularly the use of emails between the narrator and Zuhal although the narrators hiding in chat rooms to find out the obsessions of towns people ( particularly his cleaners nephew) was very creepy.
A strange book but I suspect it says more about Turkish society and its governance as the writer is a fierce critic of the government and is currently in prison as a result of his writings.
Definitely not a book that I would whole heartedly recommend but certainly an interesting picture of Turkish society and if anyone reading this review enjoys dipping their toe in translated works which look at different countries and their underbelly I'd suggest it may be worth trying- and let me know your views!

A middling writer finds himself living in a small town where two old, powerful families are fighting over a fabled treasure in an old church. The writer has an affair with the wives/girlfriends of the head of both families. This stuff is fairly standard, but it's the narrative asides of Ahmet Altan that make this book pop. He has long-winded conversations with God about the nature of free-will and novel writing. He accuses God of being a terrible writer, creating flawed characters and requiring perfection from them, and only promising resolution in the yet unwritten sequel. This is a dark noir with an increasingly unreliable narrator who doesn't even pretend to be a decent person most of the time. It's violent and sexy and bleak, and a pretty amazing meditation on humanity's uncomfortable comfort with murder.

I regretted this choice almost as soon as I started. It’s a book full of noir mysteries, not the least of which being why the narrator is convinced every woman wants to fuck him. I don’t know why I picked this one up in the first place, and I can’t be certain as to whether the contrived language is the author or the translator’s fault but regardless of who is to blame, it really wasn’t enjoyable. This one is going straight to the neighbourhood library box.

Ahmet Altan’ın Osmanlı quartet’ı kadar muhteşem ve egzotik olmasını beklememek gerekirdi Son Oyun’dan ama okur olarak şımartılmış ve beklentileri olanız korkarım. Altan yine Türk toplum hayatının maskelerin altında yaşanan o ikinci var oluşuna o kadar iyi atış yapıyor ki aynı toplumda yaşayan insanlar olarak bu bilindikliğin yüzünüze çarpması sizi bir yandan sıkıyor bir yandan tiksinen bir büyülenmeyle okuyorsunuz.
Karakterlere çok kaptırmadım kendimi; hayattan ne istediğini “bilmeyen”/bildiklerini yaşama cesaretini de, hayatına giren ama “hayal dünyasında” gizli bir ilişki yaşadığı yazarla denemeye cesaret eden Zuhal’in kararsız hali bir süre sonra nevrotik davranışlar dışında adlandırılmıyor. Üzülüyorsunuz bir yandan bu derece isteklerine hapsolmuş bir kadın için ama bu uzun süreli değil, sıkıyor sizi bu dengesiz hal. Kahramanımız yazar ise orta yaşlı, bağımsız ve sadece ne isterse onu yaşayan bir erkeğin portresi. Aslında aldırmaz ve aşağı gördüğü kasabanın ve insanlarının yavaş yavaş içine işlemesine engel olamıyor.
Kasabanın , yöneticileri başta olmak üzere, bir söylenti, bir efsane , bir yalan üzerine inşaa ettikleri “düzenleri” ise tabii ki ego, güç savaşı ve güç zehirlenmesi ile yok oluyor. Yine Türk toplum ve siyaset hayatına çok keskin paralellikler var.
Kitabın bence en etkili ve vurucu yeri kahramanımız yazarın, bir yazar olduğundan şüphelendiği ve eserine çeşitli eleştiriler getirdiği Tanrı ile konuşmaları. Ki Altan’ın tüm bu kurguyu sırf bunları yazabilmek için yazdığını hissediyorum. Bir nevi hesaplaşma, sorgulama bu kitap.

Ahmet Altan knows how to write, but even the literary level he attains in this novel failed to keep me turning the page. Almost half way through I gave up my reading. Nothing of myself was invested in his story, there were no characters I felt emotionally attached to. There was no future for me and thus I saw no end. Limbo is where I should remain, and for eternity, if I remember anything at all about this fiction, might wish it may have been different.

Αυτή ήταν μια ιδιάζουσα περίπτωση βιβλίου γιατί άλλαξα γνώμη αρκετές φορές καθώς το διάβαζα.Μέχρι τις πρώτες 50 σελίδες ήθελα να το παρατήσω, μέχρι τις 100 είπα ας του δώσω μια ευκαιρία για τις επόμενες 100 περίπου είχα ενθουσιαστεί και σκέφτηκα πως τελικά μπορεί να απογειωθεί αλλά δυστυχώς στο τέλος επιβεβαιώθηκε το αρχικό μου ένστικτο.
Νομίζω πως τελικά έχανε στην πλοκή , άσε που δεν συμπάθησα σχεδόν κανέναν χαρακτήρα.Επίσης με κούρασε απίστευτα η συνομιλία του συγγραφέα με το Θεό παρότι σαν εύρημα το λες και ευφάνταστο.Το έκανε όμως συνέχεια και με αποσυντόνιζε.
Τελική ετυμηγορία: έπρεπε να το σταματήσω όταν έπρεπε.
Νομίζω πως τελικά έχανε στην πλοκή , άσε που δεν συμπάθησα σχεδόν κανέναν χαρακτήρα.Επίσης με κούρασε απίστευτα η συνομιλία του συγγραφέα με το Θεό παρότι σαν εύρημα το λες και ευφάνταστο.Το έκανε όμως συνέχεια και με αποσυντόνιζε.

This one is 3.5 stars in my opinion but I am giving it greater mark than lower.
First to make one thing clear - this is not your standard thriller. This is more of a drama with criminal elements. Main character - writer seeking peace and comfort in secluded village in order to finish his new novel with hopes of becoming popular again - ends up in a very strange village controlled by feuding families. Out of pure curiosity he decides to stay in the village, move that will mark him forever.
Things escalate quickly in the swirl of violence and all-out madness as the main character gets pushed more and more to the dark side of human behavior (in my opinion there is not a normal person in the entire village).
Now you may ask why 3.5 stars? Simple. Certain romantic parts of the novel are extremely slow and get "old" pretty fast. Main character gets in affairs with lots of women but these women have a lot ... and I mean a lot ... mental baggage. Chapters dedicated to Internet chats or SMS messages between lovers are full of talk that is told and re-told over and over again. After a while these parts of the story start to look like page fillers and not integral story parts. At some points these chapters can bring the tempo of the story to zero.
Recommended to thriller and crime fans but be aware of rather tiresome romantic-conversation parts of the book.

Okuduğuım ilk Ahmet Altan kitabı bu olmasaydı daha iyiydi sanki. Hayatın anlık kesitleri ve hislerine yönelik gözlemleri harika. Sürekli tanrıyla hesaplaşmalar, ve kader, günah gibi kavramları sorgulamalar da günümüz Türkiye’sinde cesaret isteyecek cinsten. (Bunca yıllık bır yazarlık kariyerinden sonra o kadarı da olsun.) Hatta bence daha da ileri gidip, bu tutarsızlıklardan mantık yoluyla, nasıl bir sonuca varılabileceğini de söyleseydi daha da iyi olabilirdi. Yalnızlık ve bağlılık arasındaki ikilem güzel işlenmiş. Kitabın sonunu beğendim. Çok çabuk okudum, okuması oldukça kolay ve akıcı. Online şehvetli ilişkiler üzerine geçen hikaye, gerçekçilik pay yüksek olmasına rağmen çok da ilgimi çekmedi, belki roman daha kısa olabilirdi. Karakterlerin hiçbirini bütünüyle kendime yakın hissedemedim. Ara ara anlık kesitleri yaşar gibi oldum ama genel bir empati kuramadım..

I really enjoyed this book, as it is something completely different to what I initially expected. It includes a lot of philosophy on life, it’s meaning and the idea of sins. It’s philosophical way of writing intrigued me and convinced me to keep on reading. I especially enjoyed the romance aspect to this book, regarding the triangle of lovers and the friendships formed (either good or bad). Also, the setting and description was lovely and well-written always. In addition, the idea of a town spiraling to its downfall and the corruption caused from the so called ‘leaders’ of the town, created a very mysterious atmosphere and vibe whilst reading, which always kept it eventful and interesting. However, I was slightly disappointed (not extremely) by the ending of this book (in specific the last chapter), as I expected something more meaningful and shocking.

I loved the book starting off, but then it got a little slow in the middle. The writing style is fascinating - switching between present, past, and then what seem like internal conversations with God (who is depicted as an author like the main character, which is an interesting concept). I will admit that some sections were hard to read visually because there was no capitalization and little punctuation (meant to be more chat room-esque), which is fine, but pages of it was a little hard on the eyes to be honest. Overall a decent read though, if only for the challenging way in which the main character relates to God. A pretty unique take on the whole thing.

There were parts of this book I found really intriguing - such as the friction between lead families within the village. However, the ranting internal monologues about and to God were truly tedious. Same for the numerous dysfunctional relations with women.
I did enjoy the style of the unreliable narrator (I felt the style was sometimes similar to Martin Amis). I dislike giving negative reviews but this book felt like it was going around in circles and I ended up skim reading large sections.

Maalesef Ahmet Altan'ın eski kitaplarının tadı yok. Hatta kitabı okuyup bitirdiğimde eski kitaplarına bi özlem duymadım değil. Olay örgüsü dil ikisi de zayıf kalmış. Sanki bir çok-satan yazmak istemiş de o da pek olmamış gibi. Güzel olmadığını söyleyebilirm. Altan ın kendine has tarzı da pek hissedilemiyor.

Sosyal oyun bir entrikadır. Bizans oyunu bu kitabın konusunun geçtiği coğrafyada hiç bitmedi ki? Yazar da son oyunu yazmış ama bu son değildi. belki biliyordu belki de bilmiyordu. Gerçek soru şu ki, kendisi de yaşadığı son oyunun bir parçası mı? Abartılı müstehçenliği bıktırdı fakat kitabın teması gayet başarılı.

I don't usually leave reviews, just stars. This book was terrible. Imagine harlequin romance with some weird sexual abuse stuff.
