Prick is a stylish, practical, modern guide to the world of cacti and succulents.
"A comprehensive guide" BBC Gardeners' World Magazine
Cacti and succulents are the plant of the moment. Beautiful, affordable and - if you know how - easy to care for, they're a short cut to creating brighter, calmer, more relaxing spaces in the home and office.
In Prick , cactus and succulent expert Gynelle Leon gives you all the knowledge you need to help your plants thrive in a simple, easy-to-understand way.
As an RHS-award-winning plant photographer and founder of London's only shop dedicated to cacti and succulents, Gynelle is the perfect guide on your path to cactus know-how.
This is a nice book and the pictures are good but ultimately I was wanting to learn how 'not' to kill my plants and it hasn't helped me a great deal! I suppose it's a great reference for the types of cacti & succulents out there and it's beautifully styled but doesn't really go into the care aspect.
Lacking Some Key Info Where It Belongs; Otherwise a Great Book
In Prick, the author gives us an overview of her experience with succulents and cactuses. I practically pet mine, so I get it. However, my issue with the book (which is beautifully imaged and relatively organized) is there are key elements missing in the plant gallery section. Leon’s more current book, Plant, corrects this by including “care” information WITH the respective plant and not at the end in another section entirely, how Prick has it laid out. Succulents and cactuses, each have varying watering and light needs. Thus, the watering and care section of the book make this a hint confusing as we’re given generalized guidelines and not something specific to the plant based on type.
A decent overview of the various family of cacti. This is a solid introduction for newcomers that can be a reference to send them off to looking into each cactus and their relatives elsewhere. The book is the size of a paperback, which has its positive elements, but this is such a rich and beautiful area of study that it could be a crime to render them so small in any book no matter the author's intention.
I like how she uses the Latin name rather than common names, to organize this book. Lovely photos and the author has a definite sense of style. Only drawback is I wanted to buy the same plant pots as she uses in this book, however they are from a shop in the UK so would be very expensive to ship to me in Canada. Better than other cacti/succulent and general houseplant books I have read.
Purchased when I went to the Dessert Botanical Garden, Phoenix. It signified my return love to plants during COVID. Gynelle Leon (@bowbelle) is a Black British woman who runs London's first cacti and succulent boutique @prickldn. I love seeing black & brown plant femmes.
It is a really lovely book, but I should have realised from the title that it would be more heavily cacti focused than I was really after. But still a beautiful book for my digital collection!
This book has saved several plants of mine while teaching me some great propagation tricks and facts I never knew about some of my favourite succulents! Vast and in-depth!
I was torn between two or three stars for this, but went for three in the end because it did have a lot of pictures. The information in here is very basic, and there was nothing new I gained from this book, but I do think it could be useful to someone first getting exposed to succulents and cacti. There is definitely a preference to cacti over succulents in this book, but then it is titled "Prick".
This was a silly gift from my mum who giggled at the title (obviously) It's a good little reference book with not too much blabber about nonsense you really don't care about. You want to know what plant you have and how to not kill it. I should remember to take this shopping with me the next time I hit the garden centre..!
It's not about what you think! Most everything any cactus or succulent lover would want to know about these interesting plants, with lots of nice color photos. I got a copy for my wife because I'm sort of a . . . . No,Wait! I got it for her because she loves those plants.
the book will be suitable for you if you look for a brief explanation of various cacti collection. it's a nice collection to have. also the book is nicely binded and the paper quality is excellent.
