This was a really great book. It was written informative but in story form which really keeps me interested. Many times my stomach turned reading this but it was well worth it!
It's now 30 years after the publication of this book. It may be somewhat dated as it relates to current issues around capital punishment. That said, it is an interesting window into the history of various methods of executions performed in the USA. Certainly written for general readers also it includes an index.
There are some interesting stories here - some I was familiar with, some I wasn't. Doesn't always focus on what I would have liked it to. Some nice prose throughout.
such an amazing and informative book, picked it up in a charity shop and i was drawn to how beaten up it looked. im so glad i got it though, as ive learned so much that i never even knew i wanted to know. the amount of people who've tried to borrow it off me when i carried it around school is crazy. would reccomend to everyone, only problem is that the author appears slightly biased at some times yet all that does is add to the distinct tone it is wrote in. great book
An interesting look at the history of executions in America and how executions evolved from hanging, firing squad, electric chair to the now ever popular death by lethal injection. He touches a bit on execution of the innocent, but this book deals mostly with facts and doesn't give very much personal opinion.
Meh. I might have liked the book better if the author hadn't made an obnoxious "this author is neither for or against capital punishment, and leaves it up to the reader to decide" statement in the intro, and then proceeded to write a very biased book. The stories were interesting in and of themselves, but the book was very preachy. So. There you have it. :)
