Born in October of 1984, Nathaniel James Dowell has always been an artist. In 2017, he resigned from his full-time desk job to pursue writing and illustration full time (also at a desk), while managing a rambunctious 2 year old (also full time).

In addition to writing, he has a broad range of interests, including photography, music, and ecology. He is native to San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Sara, and their two children, Amethyst and Jasper.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon the advent of children in my life, a new age of Children's Literature began. The bedtime story ritual has brought some excellent titles into my life, and also some that I have had to make "disappear". I want to write stories that look and feel and sound like effort went into them. Obviously, I want children to enjoy my books, but I also want to appeal to parents.

My first book, "Skeleton and Ghost," is a book I would have loved as a child, and is the culmination of an abiding love of Halloween, coupled with a spontaneous bedtime story for my five year old, Amethyst. Most books are too cute, or too scary. I tried to find a sweet middle ground, providing a story appropriate for all ages, while rooting it in atmospheric illustration. My daughter has graciously endorsed my efforts.

If you are a child at heart who loves Halloween but are not into the over-the-top creepy aspect of it, or if you are looking for a book to share with an important child in your life, this is the book for you. It is an adorable story of a skeleton who longs to walk around in the outside world, but cannot because he has no ghost. Along comes a ghost looking for his family and so begins a beautiful relationship!

The story is sweet and the writing is enchanting. The illustrations are gorgeous creations by the author himself! This is the perfect book for you to share with your child, little sibling, niece, nephew, or friend.

Happy Halloween!

Charming, timeless story of friendship with a twist

Mr. Dowell has created a compelling, graceful line between spooky and friendly and skated on it like he was born wearing skates.

I especially enjoyed the stained glass window, and I feel confident in suggesting that you'll come to the end of this story of friendship wishing for more stories from Mr. Dowell.

Thanks, Amethyst, for asking for a story about a ghost. Maybe next time you could ask for one about a ladybug, too?
