The third book in the Earthman Jack series, and the first part of the “Conclave Trilogy” within the series (part 1 of book 3, in essence).
There might be a few spoilers below, but I’ve kept it pretty vague so it should be pretty safe reading ahead!
The Earthman Jack series started with Jack getting pulled into an adventure that led to him taking off into space, just as everything he loved on Earth was destroyed. Jack faced death and danger in book one to stick it to the Deathlords, and then in book 2 he got to learn about the hub of the universe – Omnicron. All wasn’t as it seemed in the glitzy capital as Jack unearthed the dark underbelly of the city, and the corruption building within it as the secret army grew.
Now on the run from the Empire, Jack and his companions are in deadly danger with nowhere to go and seemingly no allies to help them get out of the mess they’re in. They’re fighting for their lives, and trying to find a cure of Anna, the girl who will someday run the Empire.
This book added nicely to the series, continuing to build the tension and adventure, and growing the danger to the good guys, and their skills in dealing with the big bads. It was great to get a bit more mythology behind how the Deathlords came about, and I thought the story cracked along at a really good pace.
There are all sorts of threads here, with different characters, point of views and storylines, and I thought they were all juggled nicely, where I got the sense that seemingly separate events were all pulling towards the same thing.
Even though I know things will go pear-shaped with him, I’m still a Mourdock girl – there’s just something about that character, even though he’s a heroic hero (and I usually like a bit of badboy with my good) he has the charisma to carry it all off.
Scally is the other character that really continues to resonate with me, he’s street-savvy, smart and trying to be good and not always winning. I’m invested in his evolution as his character and where he will go.
The key storylines with Scallywag, the meeting with Mourdock and consequences were great, while others didn’t appeal quite so much, they did feel like they were building to something important, and that gave them their own significance.
Kimlee had another one of my fav storylines from the book, and Devorian was an intriguing addition to the series, and I’m looking forward to seeing where Kimlee goes and what impact she has. It’s great to see a character that would ordinarily get overlooked or put into the background once her time as a romantic obstacle is done, get the time to develop into an intriguing character.
Another new character to the series that I liked and had immediate impact was Glimmer. Her relationship with Scally is prickly and interesting, and has a good amount of depth and history, which I really enjoyed. While the Conclave added a good slew of new characters, there was no one there that stood out to me as much as Glimmer in the new character stakes. Although, I did appreciate the building friendships with Jack with some of the Conclave peeps, and you got a great sense that the merry times there really are not going to last. Some of the bad guys are obvious, yet others are not, and that’s the fun of it – trying to work out just who is part of the secret army.
Heckubus, while I’ve liked him in previous books, really grew on me more in this book because I got the sense that he was going to be a lot more than comic relief. It felt like he was leading somewhere significant, and that interested me a lot.
The biggest surprise for me with the characters was Fred and Wil – I started to really fall in love with these guys. They had complex and flawed characters and their storyline was really interesting, and I suspect will only get more important as the books continue.
The second big surprise for me was Grohm, and how much I enjoyed him! For a character who didn’t say much, and who wasn’t in the book a great deal, he had a big impact, and I think there is a lot more complexity to this character than I originally though – which is really cool.
The bad guys became increasingly menacing as the book continued, and I began to wonder just how the good guys were going to come through it all in tact. Stalker Crux specifically was an interesting adversary, and he had a significant impact on the book when he came head to head with Jack. This character intrigued me.
There was plenty of the usual trademark Kadish tongue-in-cheek humor, lots of action and a great story to carry it all along. The final fight scene was fantastic – plenty of tension and well worth the build up through the book.
For me, this story was highly enjoyable, and recommended reading for anyone who loves a great space adventure (which I do)!
I received an ARC for a honest review.
