The Conclave #1

Earthman Jack vs. The Intergalactic Manhunt

Rate this book
Earthman Jack vs. The Intergalactic Manhunt is the first installment of "The Conclave Trilogy" and the third book in the Earthman Jack Space Saga.

After the events of The Secret Army, Earthman Jack Finnegan and his rag-tag group of companions are on the run as a galaxy-wide manhunt is underway, with the Empire's military, ruthless cyborg bounty hunters, and the members of the Deathlords' secret army relentlessly pursuing them. As if that weren't bad enough, the love of Jack's life - Princess Anna - is still in grave danger, thanks to the evil Deathlord Supreme Verrutus.

A new and relentless enemy emerges in the form of Stalker Crux, the most legendary bounty hunter in the universe, who sets his sights on Jack and his companions. While this new threat looms, another Deathlord Supreme emerges from the shadows with a plan of far-reaching destruction that will shake the galaxy to its very core.

Jack's one hope to save Anna and lift the price on his head may lie with Mourdock Skyborn, Anna's fiancee and next in line to assume the role of Emperor. But trusting Mourdock may be more dangerous than he thought, as dark forces conspire against Jack to lead him and his companions into a trap which they may not be able to escape.

How can Jack protect the universe if all in it have turned against him? How can he hope to prevail as his enemies grow more and more powerful? Where can Jack run to when there is no place left that is safe?

Can Earthman Jack stay one step ahead of his adversaries long enough to save the day? Or will he never be able to escape this Intergalactic Manhunt?

This is the third book in a series of five (so far) but originally this was just the first part of book three. If you read the first two (each being over 600 pages), you know Kadish doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘novella’ so the fact that this one was cut up really says something about the enormity of this series.

Intergalactic Manhunt starts off right where the last left off. Jack and friends are on the run in space having to fight off the royal fleet and bounty hunters pretty much every time they come out of hyperspace. It takes them a while but they figure out how to evade the seemingly ceaseless fighting. They have not yet saved Anna and they have very few friends after the fiasco on Omnicrom. Things were looking grimmer after Jack gets hurt but with a little help from a friend, they head to the Conclave – the training place for Paladins.

And just when you think things are going to work out, a new problem arises - with what we’ve learned about the Slythru and without people with Jack’s ability to see them, they could be controlling anyone and we get to find out about a few more well-placed agents. Ooooh, the plot thickens.

As he did in the last installment, Kadish treats us to some various pop-culture references. I tried hard this time but I doubt that I caught them all. I found The Princess Bride (spoof on whether the drink was poisoned), The Matrix (spoof on Smith talking about humans being a virus), Star Wars (the Jedi council deciding whether to train Skywalker), Star Trek (the Borg are now selling furniture in space because they assimilated a species that is greedy), the entrance to the Conclave seems like Stargate and one of the Paladin is named Pennywise (like the clown from It).

It was a good story but it was still quite long even after being cut down so be prepared.

The third book in the Earthman Jack series, and the first part of the “Conclave Trilogy” within the series (part 1 of book 3, in essence).

There might be a few spoilers below, but I’ve kept it pretty vague so it should be pretty safe reading ahead!

The Earthman Jack series started with Jack getting pulled into an adventure that led to him taking off into space, just as everything he loved on Earth was destroyed. Jack faced death and danger in book one to stick it to the Deathlords, and then in book 2 he got to learn about the hub of the universe – Omnicron. All wasn’t as it seemed in the glitzy capital as Jack unearthed the dark underbelly of the city, and the corruption building within it as the secret army grew.

Now on the run from the Empire, Jack and his companions are in deadly danger with nowhere to go and seemingly no allies to help them get out of the mess they’re in. They’re fighting for their lives, and trying to find a cure of Anna, the girl who will someday run the Empire.

This book added nicely to the series, continuing to build the tension and adventure, and growing the danger to the good guys, and their skills in dealing with the big bads. It was great to get a bit more mythology behind how the Deathlords came about, and I thought the story cracked along at a really good pace.

There are all sorts of threads here, with different characters, point of views and storylines, and I thought they were all juggled nicely, where I got the sense that seemingly separate events were all pulling towards the same thing.

Even though I know things will go pear-shaped with him, I’m still a Mourdock girl – there’s just something about that character, even though he’s a heroic hero (and I usually like a bit of badboy with my good) he has the charisma to carry it all off.

Scally is the other character that really continues to resonate with me, he’s street-savvy, smart and trying to be good and not always winning. I’m invested in his evolution as his character and where he will go.

The key storylines with Scallywag, the meeting with Mourdock and consequences were great, while others didn’t appeal quite so much, they did feel like they were building to something important, and that gave them their own significance.

Kimlee had another one of my fav storylines from the book, and Devorian was an intriguing addition to the series, and I’m looking forward to seeing where Kimlee goes and what impact she has. It’s great to see a character that would ordinarily get overlooked or put into the background once her time as a romantic obstacle is done, get the time to develop into an intriguing character.

Another new character to the series that I liked and had immediate impact was Glimmer. Her relationship with Scally is prickly and interesting, and has a good amount of depth and history, which I really enjoyed. While the Conclave added a good slew of new characters, there was no one there that stood out to me as much as Glimmer in the new character stakes. Although, I did appreciate the building friendships with Jack with some of the Conclave peeps, and you got a great sense that the merry times there really are not going to last. Some of the bad guys are obvious, yet others are not, and that’s the fun of it – trying to work out just who is part of the secret army.

Heckubus, while I’ve liked him in previous books, really grew on me more in this book because I got the sense that he was going to be a lot more than comic relief. It felt like he was leading somewhere significant, and that interested me a lot.

The biggest surprise for me with the characters was Fred and Wil – I started to really fall in love with these guys. They had complex and flawed characters and their storyline was really interesting, and I suspect will only get more important as the books continue.

The second big surprise for me was Grohm, and how much I enjoyed him! For a character who didn’t say much, and who wasn’t in the book a great deal, he had a big impact, and I think there is a lot more complexity to this character than I originally though – which is really cool.

The bad guys became increasingly menacing as the book continued, and I began to wonder just how the good guys were going to come through it all in tact. Stalker Crux specifically was an interesting adversary, and he had a significant impact on the book when he came head to head with Jack. This character intrigued me.

There was plenty of the usual trademark Kadish tongue-in-cheek humor, lots of action and a great story to carry it all along. The final fight scene was fantastic – plenty of tension and well worth the build up through the book.

For me, this story was highly enjoyable, and recommended reading for anyone who loves a great space adventure (which I do)!

I received an ARC for a honest review.

5 Intergalactic Stars!

The Happenings...
Jack and friends are back with yet another exciting adventure!! And as always, the author takes us on one heck of a wild, intense, crazy thrill ride!

Added to the canvas are a whole slew of new and fascinating characters, including many who are in cahoots with the deathlords! Muahahaha! - but wait! The evil deathlords have an new plan - or rather an old one - universal domination! New villains, corrupt allies, more sinister deeds and a force that seems truly unstoppable as they seek out destruction and total annihilation, giving us one incredibly entertaining page turner!

Book three of this saga has been broken down into three parts - because trust me, it was too incredible to be told in just one book - beginning with Earthman Jack vs. The Intergalactic Manhunt, which starts out with an ingenious and inventive recap of book two, allowing fans to relive that epic journey and new readers to get caught up on what’s going on.

When this story begins, we meet back up with our heroes who are in a most dire situation! Jack and his crew are aboard the Earthship, being hunted throughout the galaxy by Imperial ships and Shanks is desperately trying to break through to Anna using his mind construct, hoping to help free her of the hold the slythru has on her. Soon, Jack has to accept help from an old friend, which puts him and his crew in an even more disastrous situation, leaving them separated and at the mercy of the enemy!

New allies are discovered, war is being waged on many fronts, enemies and betrayal are everywhere and painful sacrifices are made. It really does feel as if the heroes just might lose this daunting battle. On the plus side - or maybe not, since it seems there are some who don’t want him at the Conclave - Jack might finally get the paragon training he wants. But things aren’t always as they seem, which he soon finds out.

I don’t want to give too much away, but just know, there is A LOT going on in this book, all leading up to one impressive adventure that ends on a cliffy that would be agonizing if the next book weren’t already released - because the author is awesome and knew we wouldn’t want to wait to find out what happens next!

Hats off to you Mr. Kadish!

The Characters...
Jack is the kind of hero you have to root for. Even when things are going markedly wrong, his conviction, his courage and his eagerness draw you in. He’s not always on top. In fact, he rarely sees the top. In true hero fashion, he has some serious obstacles to overcome and he’s not always skillful in his delivery. Even with all he’s already accomplished, there are people who doubt his ability or his iron clad will and they push him aside as useless, but Jack NEVER gives up. That’s what I love most about him. He just never gives up!

Heckubus is still one of my favorite characters as his evil wittiness keeps me both laughing and amazed at how cunning his schemes really are. Scally has always intrigued me, but as he plays front and center, rescuing his friends when they need him most, I found I grew more excited when he appeared on the canvas! He’s quickly became one of my favs, too! And Grohm, the giant with few words, Green, the professor who is filling out his hero shoes quit well, Shanks who is willing to make the huge sacrifices for the greater good, Dan, who NEEDS his own spin-off story ... all these characters may be in separate corners this time, but they are united in their loyalty, their friendship and in their quest to rid the universe of the deathlords.

I love all of them!

The Wrap Up:
I’ve enjoyed this series since the first book, which blew me away. Each episode gets bigger, better and more daring. There are dangers everywhere and just when you think things can’t get more complicated, the author throws in the kitchen sink and suddenly complications become unbending barriers. I couldn’t help but be glued to the pages as it all played out, excitedly flipping through them to see what happens next. This series may be classified as young adult, but it can be easily read by any age reader and they are sure to find something extraordinary between the pages. I read it. Then my daughter read it. And we both loved it!

The writing and creativity is outstanding, the world building and the character development are amazing and the story itself is ... ingenious. It’s entertaining, it’s thrilling, it’s scary at times, it’s laugh-out-loud fun, it’s complicated and it’s emotional. Just what all great stories should be.

On to the next!

The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

You guys really need to meet Jack. Book 3 (and 4 and 5) are out today, and Jack still rocks.

Back in 2013, Hugh Howey—indie author extraordinaire and vocal advocate for self-published authors—shared a letter on his blog from some guy named Matt Kadish who had written a book and self-published it on Amazon. Hugh Howey hasn't lead me wrong yet, so looked up Matt’s book on Amazon…600+ pages for $.99? Harry Potter meets Star Wars? Uh…duh. I downloaded Earthman Jack vs. The Ghost Planet immediately. And then didn't read it. For like a year.

I can’t remember what made me finally pick it up, but I can tell you that once I got going I plowed through it. It was a blast to read! (Read my original EJ1 review here). I Immediately went back to the beginning and started again, this time reading out loud to my kids—and they loved it as much as I did.

I’d found a rare thing. I’d found a self-published book that deserves to be read.

Book 2, Earthman Jack vs. The Secret Army, came along in 2015, and once again it struck all the right notes. Action, drama, intrigue, great characters, and laugh-out-loud dialogue sprinkled through out. No sophomore slump for Earthman Jack.

Now we have book 3, and I'm happy to say that streak continues. It's an expectation at this point. If fact, it ended up being so packed full of awesome that it had to be split into 3 separate books:

Earthman Jack vs. The Intergalactic Manhunt: Book 1 of the Conclave Trilogy
Earthman Jack vs. The Ring of Fire: Book 2 of the Conclave Trilogy
Earthman Jack vs. The Conclave of Corruption: Book 3 of the Conclave Trilogy

I love Jack and my kids love Jack. The only reason you and your kids don't love Jack is because you haven't read about him yet.

Fix that.

Happy Reading!

Still enjoying the series

I just finished the 3rd book in the series and I am still a fan. I'm enjoying the character interaction and the character development. With that said, the Intergalactic Manhut was not quite as good as the first two books in the series. My biggest gripe was how the setting in the Conclave was very reminiscent of the sorting hat from Harry Potter. I understand where the plot is going but just didn't care for that part.

I'm looking forward to beginning book 4 and am hoping the action picks up.

Still an outstanding series and still a recommendation for someone looking to read a solid series.

The saga of hidden pop culture references continues! Earthman Jack’s story romps wonderfully along leaving you to wonder “excuse me, did he REALLY go there?” Half the fun is spotting the “not so obvious” (then comparing notes with other readers) As the plot thickens are your favorite characters the good guys or the bad guys? Matthew Kadish masterfully intertwines the various twists and turns giving you just enough to keep turning pages and always leaving you wanting more.
