Kendra Michaels, formerly blind and now a hired gun for law enforcement agencies who relies on her razor-sharp powers of observation, is reluctant to help the FBI with the most recent case they’ve brought to her. But then she hears the details: the body was found just blocks away from Kendra’s condo. The young woman was carrying an envelope with Kendra’s name on it, and inside was an SD card with what appears to be an innocuous video of a wedding reception. The woman died trying to get the video to Kendra, but for what purpose? Before Kendra and the FBI can answer that question, the bride is abducted from her suburban home.
And so the hunt is on for a killer whose nightmarish plan is slowly becoming clear. A plan that involves a powerful law firm and a multi-billion dollar corporation. As the body count rises, Kendra joins forces with private investigator Jessie Mercado and agent-for-hire Adam Lynch to stop the plot as it grows ever closer to its terrifying conclusion.
In Double Blind, Iris and Roy Johansen deliver an emotional, gripping new entry in the bestselling Kendra Michaels series.

Kendra Michaels was blind from birth. Until she wasn’t; due to a rare, successful stem cell surgery. While she was blind, her determined, brilliant mother decided that Kendra was going to grow up extraordinary. Kendra thought this was a fine idea, and in furtherance of this goal developed her other senses to an almost otherworldly degree. Even when Kendra gained her sight, she still honed this talent of noticing what most of us have always missed. This ability did not go unnoticed by the FBI, and they have often made use of her talents. As Kendra remarks upon during a self-defense lesson with Adam Lynch, there have been 26 attempts on her life; which might be a record for a well known musical therapist working with autistic kids. Not surprisingly, Kendra is not always pleased to be drawn into their cases as a consultant. Luckily she always has Lynch, the man called upon by governments or their agencies for special jobs. Lynch is almost always at Kendra’s side or at her back when she is consulting. Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego office FBI office, Michael Griffin personally recruits Kendra into an hours old case. A woman has purposely run into traffic and been killed a few blocks from Kendra’s home. The police have found an envelope containing a memory stick with Kendra’s name on it. (This would really be one the very few reason the FBI would be called to a non-terrorist murder scene, unless it was a known a known part of a series or a hate crime. You are welcome). The memory stick contains a video of a lovely wedding reception. Nothing overtly remarkable about the video, until members of the wedding party begin to disappear. Kendra and best friend Olivia use their skills to unravel and try to stop the upcoming deaths the video portends. Adam Lynch and Jessie Mercado, a private detective and friend to Kendra, are also determined to stay involved with Kendra’s case when they discover the presence of a quasi-government security agency. Both Mercado and Lynch have experiences with this company. Kendra and Olivia are intriguing, strong women. They are super-women of the realistic kind, not the comic book variety. They live their lives to the fullest, and show extraordinary skill, grace and determination. Double Blind is darker than previous books in the series. Stretched to her limits by heartbreak, Kendra is forced to understand she can’t always protect her loved ones, a circle wider than previously she previously admits. Pacing and a plot that makes the book hard to put down, Double Blind is a terrific addition to the Kendra Michael series. I always suggest reading an entire series so as not to miss out, but its fine to start with this one because of the stellar summation in my first two paragraphs. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I'll preface this review by saying that this is my first book by these authors and it is exactly what I was expecting. I felt like I was reading a soft core superhero story. I found the characters to be unbelievable and not engaging enough for my tastes. That being said, I can see the appeal of this series for readers that enjoy a light read with a strong female lead. The last couple of chapters were really good, I only wish the rest of the novel had followed suit.
I was provided an ARC of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A huge fan of Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan books, this is my first foray into her Kendra Michaels series. Double Blind is just as intricate as any of her previous plots with plenty of government coverups and advances in science technology. But maybe because this is book 6 and I am just encountering the characters now that I have this feeling that I just "liked" it enough for it to be a 3. 0 star, but I began to skim around the 67% mark. However, I really liked the relationship between Kendra and Lynch and the epilogue left me very intrigued into what comes next for the duo.
Another fabulous book from Iris and Roy Johansen!!! This dream team continues to write some of best thriller and suspense novels out their. Their characters are so interesting and so multidimensional and I feel like I know them personally. Double Blind has one of my favorite characters of all kendra Michael s a formerly blind woman who got her sight back, but who see's,hears and smells things that others dont. When a woman is killed trying to get a sd card to kendra once again she is pulled into a case and pitted against another sadistic monster who is willing to kill anyone that gets in his way and who also has ties to a corrupt multi -billion dollar corporation that has ties to law enforcement and goverment. Besides kendra, bad boy and mercenary Adam lynch is back. The chemistry between kendra and lynch has always been like a powder keg ready to explode and now it's been let go go and theirs no turning back!!! I knew when these two came together that sexually it was going to be phenomenal and it was worth waiting for!!! Also Jessie Mercado private investigator all around bad ass is back!!! Love this chic!!! Another of johansen's strong take charge herione's!! This book was full of johansen's trade mark twist's and turns and even though she wrapped up this book it's not done, but that's what I love about her books can't wait to see what happens next now that lynch, kendra and Jessica have decided to take Brock limited on,it's gonna be one hell of a ride!!😉💖👍
I have read a lot of books by Iris Johansen, but I somehow had missed this series and ended up jumping in at #6 and it worked as a standalone. I now need to go back and read the first 5 in the series. While this is a mystery, it is not like the Eve Duncan series.
The main character, Kendra Michaels, was born blind but had a successful stem cell surgery and can now see. She uses her highly developed senses to occasionally help the FBI with cases. This story has several things going on in it from blindness, kidnappings, a multi-billion dollar company, murder, some romance and much more. Kendra is a sometimes likeable, often stubborn, strong and independent. This novel is high on dialogue and ends with setting up a sequel.
it was an entertaining, fast-paced novel and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. However, to me, the Eve Duncan series is much better and more polished than this one.
It's just a couple of years ago that I read my first Iris Johansen book. It was an Eve Duncan book and I just loved it since then have I read several from that series and some from this the Kendra Michael series.
Kendra Michaels was born blind, but she got her sight back as an adult and she has a keen sense for details that other miss which help a lot when FBI needs her help. Like this time when a woman is killed just a couple of blocks from Kendra's Condo. A woman carrying an envelope with Kendra's name on it.
The beginning of the book was intriguing. Kendra was given a video of a wedding and she has no clues as to why since she doesn't know who the woman who was killed. Nor does she recognize anyone at the wedding. So, first, must they figure out who the people at the wedding are.
Beside the case is Kendra dealing with her "relationship" with Adam Lynch. The attraction is there, but she has trouble giving in to him. Perhaps this case will bring them together. I love that private investigator Jessie Mercado has a part in this story. I would love to see her get her own book (or series) someday.
The case was the best when everything was still unknown. The reason for the death of the woman (and the later ones killed) was a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping for a more conspiratorial angle rather than the one that the book presented. Still, I liked the book and I'm looking forward to the next one!
I want to thank St. Martin's Press for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!
Kendra Michaels is not too happy about working with the FBI again, but this case has her name on it. Literally. A woman is killed, and on her body they find an envelope addressed to Kendra. Inside the envelope is a wedding video that no one seems to be able to make heads or tails of. As Kendra gets involved, the body count rises and Kendra herself is in danger.
The 6th book in the Kenra Michaels series by Iris Johansen. I haven't read all of the previous books, but, from the few I have read, this is a fun and exciting series. I need to go back and read the ones I somehow missed.
Kendra was blind and had enhanced abilities with her other senses, making her great at the power of deduction. She is no longer blind, but still has an incredible critical thinking abilities. A strong female protagonist who is smart, brave, and honest.
Double Blind is a fast-paced, light, and entertaining read. Plenty of suspense and a little romance. A good read for fans of Iris Johansen.
I received an ARC of this book from St. Martin's Press and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Double Blind is the sixth novel in the Johansen's Kendra Michaels series and is a fast-paced thriller that is sure to have wide appeal. The main concept is that Kendra, like the superhero Daredevil, grew up blind and thus developed super-senses which allow almost Sherlock Holmesian powers of deduction. Those supersenses are featured at the start, but that focus should have continued throughout. Black ops, a Mack Bolan style warrior buddy, and mysterious murders round out the tale. Overall, a decent escape, but not exceptional.
First Thoughts (1 star) Dialogue written for hormonal teenagers. Belief that women secretly long to fall in love with jerks. Women who can’t think for themselves and so second-guess themselves every time a man disagrees with them. And I’m still in the first chapter. Hhhmmm...
After first couple of CDS (2 stars): I’m trying to get through this. I’ve upgraded to two stars because I’m beginning to see that the text would not be as bad without the smarmy way the reader is presenting it. Her intonation is such that every male dialogue line in the book is jeered like a pickup line. If I listen to the actual words, I don’t think There’s anything in the text itself to indicate that they would be read that way. Unfortunately there is the sense in the book that the cops are bumbling fool who don’t see evidence right before their eyes and that someone who is not trained in investigation whatsoever can easily see what they missed. It’s an unfortunate negative view of law-enforcement, And that’s not the reading, that’s the text.
Quitting after 6 of 8 discs: Juvenile pre-teen relationship between two adults is not attractive. I was going to try to finish this book but it’s become a chore so I’m done.
There is a serial plot within a corporate illegal activity/cover up plot in this book. Only the serial killer element is resolved, the corporate plot is left as a cliffhanger for the next book. I'm never thrilled when all the threads aren't resolved and this was a huge thread.
Although I've enjoyed a couple of books in this series and had previously been really interested in the characters, that's actually no longer the case. I DNF'd book 5 and was giving the series a second chance with this book. I've categorized this book under abandoned series.
Although the plot(s) had a lot of potential and there were a few good scenes they were strong together with way too much cheesy dialogue, almost comic hero self admiration, and just too much we're so awesome and better than anyone else that I couldn't stomach it. The believability factor scored a zero for me.
Too far over the top. If you don't like macabre stories don't read this book. Kendra is extremely observant so she gets hired as a consultant to the FBI. Guests at an event are being murdered and anybody who investigates is targeted. The first mystery is revealed halfway and it's sick. The bigger mystery is why are so many people willing enable it and cover it up. The narrative is 90% dialogue.
I really disliked this book. I found it extremely annoying and poorly written. Perhaps it is the genre, but I would not read another of this author's books.
I have come to like Kendra Michaels more than Eve Duncan but this book falls short on action and suspense and has too much relationship stuff which I don't want in a mystery novel. But thanks to Goodreads for the ARC.
I received this ARC copy of Double Blind via a goodreads giveaway.
A friend introduced me to the Eve Duncan series quite some time ago; but, I find the new characters, introduced via that series to be just as intriguing. This is another novel in the Kendra Michaels series.
Kendra was born blind and her best friend, Olivia was blinded by an accident. Kendra’s sight was restored via an experimental stem cell operation in another country and this gave Kendra a new and wild life. Determined to continue honing her already acute senses, Kendra outlives her wild times and settles as a music therapy teacher for autistic children; but her hones senses have become a gift to the FBI in solving cases, even though Kendra would rather not be involved in another grizzly murder investigation.
This time, Kendra had no option to stray from the investigation, a woman was killed when she hurtled herself into traffic; but there were two things s trange about this incident; first, the woman had been shot prior to killing herself and second she had an envelope addressed to Kendra in her pocket. Inside the envelope was a flash drive of a seemingly innocuous wedding reception; but as usual, there is more than the eyes can see going on here.
First, the woman was only blocks away from Kendra’s home. Second, the groom in the video had been murdered the week prior. Kendra, Lynch, Jessie Mercado and the FBI must learn what they can about the woman, the video and why a sadistic serial killer has targeted the wedding group before the victim list grows to include Kendra’s own friends!
As usual, an awesome read. Easily a stand alone book!
The Johansens (mother and son) write very fast moving books. Lots of dialogue/action, I never felt the book lagged. I really enjoy Kendra's 'superpowers'--she gets away with being Sherlockian in an almost believable way (she had been blind so her heightened other senses help her be far more observant than most seeing people). And I enjoy the relationship with Lynch. The other characters were a little two dimensional but somehow you just get caught up in the action enough not to care. These are super fast reads so great for a plane or commute. I would definitely continue the series.
Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
2.5 hearts
I love this Kendra Michaels series and I have practically devoured each book. Kendra is exciting to watch because she uses all her senses to deduce what is going on in the world and in FBI cases she is often asked to work. There's action, mystery, intelligent casework and a nice group of family and friends. Adam Lynch is often involved with Kendra's cases and adds sexual tension and humor.
There has been a will they or won't they with Adam in all the previous books. The longer this has continued, the more I have tired of it. Kendra's reasons are unreasonable. A person feels what they feel and telling yourself you don't or won't feel is stupid. Now choosing your actions, no matter what you feel is quite normal. But lying to yourself and others about how you feel seems immature.
In Double Blind, a woman was murdered bringing information to Kendra. So Kendra must involve herself with solving the murder, which turns out to be murders. I didn't think she really HAD to get involved as she has her music therapy practice, but this is the story.
I didn't feel Kendra used her skills as much in this story. It mainly surfaced as more of a parlor trick when she met someone new as a verification of her credentials. The procedures they followed to solve the case didn't seem very smart or organized this time. Kendra also wasn't as smart about her safety or that of her friends and family.
The ending left with Kendra going with Adam to assist with his situations. I'm thrilled to see her finally taking that step and hope the relationship will be more authentic in the future. I greatly look forward to the next book, although this is my least favorite in the series.
If you are a fan of Iris Johansen, you will enjoy this story. If you have read any of the Kendra Michaels books, this is another suspenseful story involving her well-honed senses that she developed while she was blind and trained after her successful stem cell surgery. There is not as much of her life dealing with music therapy in this book, which I missed. Once again, Michael Griffin, Special Agent in charge of the San Diego FBI office, draws Kendra into a case involving dead and missing women. A woman has purposely run into traffic and been killed a few blocks from Kendra’s home. The police have found an envelope containing a memory stick with Kendra’s name on it. Luckily she has Lynch, the man called upon by governments or their agencies for special jobs. Lynch stays at Kendra’s side while she is consulting on this case. As usual, she becomes a target from the psychopath that she and the FBI are trying to find.
Jessie Mercado, a private detective and friend to Kendra, also makes an appearance to help Kendra with some surveillance. Olivia, Kendra's best friend is also important to the story in both the hero and victim role. The women in this story are strong, smart, have amazing skills, are determined and close to fearless. They are also loyal to one another and their true friends. The pacing and plot kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I am finding that these books are still enjoyable, but not necessarily as heart pounding as they were when I started reading them. The writing and story are still good, it is my interest that is waning somewhat. This is a series that does not have to be read in order, but as characters have been added to it, it will help you understand about the relationships if you do. The publisher, St. Martin's Press, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.
Another tale involving formerly blind Kendra Michaels and her keen abilities of observation to solve the latest mystery with the help of her supporting cast including Oliva, her childhood friend who happens to be blind and Adam Lynch, a man with a "special set of skills" and the fiery Jessie Mercado, private investigator. This was another enjoyable read and thank you GoodReads for the advance reader copy.
LOVED having more Adam/Kendra moments but missed the stronger suspense element I've come to expect in this series. Of course, last time I was complaining about not having enough Adam. Overall, a great installment to the series and left me wanting book 7 even more!
This remains one of my favorite romantic suspense series.
Kendra Michaels is once again drawn into a FBI investigation although this time by the murder victim. Kendra relies heavily on her heightened senses to pick up on clues that the average investigator doesn't. In this case, the murder victim was murdered trying to get to Kendra's apartment. The interesting twist is that Kendra has no idea who the woman is or why she would want to get to Kendra. We see many of the former characters that we have met in the Kendra Michaels series and it is great to have them back in the mix. If you are looking for an interesting and entertaining read this one will definitely do the job.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Double Blind by Iris and Roy Johansen that I read and reviewed. This is the sixth book in the Kendra Michaels series and I can honestly say I think this series gets better with each book. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I was actually in tears at one point because I am so invested in these characters and I was feeling Kendra's pain at one point. I love it and I can't wait to see where the authors take the series next. This book had a great story and was packed full of information about the Kendra Michaels and Adam Lynch story which I love in itself. This book was the full package and I highly recommend it. Needless to say Double Blind gets five out of five stars.
If you are following this series, you might be quite pleased to know that you don't have to read a couple of hundred pages before Dr. Kendra Michaels off and on love interest former FBI Agent Adam Lynch appears in the story. He is here, front and center, at the very beginning.
Who is the inestimable Kendra Michaels? Blind for over twenty years, having honed her other senses to near perfection, and now with her life restored due to an experimental procedure, she is invaluable to multiple law agencies as a consultant. Her job, however, is a music therapist, so she is rather reluctant to step into some of the cases where they need her help.
In the most recent case brought to Kendra's attention, a young woman has been killed just a few blocks away from Kendra's condo. The woman had an envelope with an SD card inside. When Kendra views what looks like a video of a wedding reception, her reluctance to help is gone in an instant. Before Kendra can really begin to ascertain what is going on, the bride is abducted, and soon bodies are being strewn about.
Who is the killer this time? What is the motive? And will Kendra, along with friend and private investigator Jessie Mercado, and yes, Adam Lynch, be able to bring the killer to justice and stop any more senseless deaths? We also have FBI Agent Michael Griffin as part of the investigation. Because I love continuity and connecting characters, I would be remiss if I did not mention Olivia, another good friend of Kendra's and how they work well together during this difficult case.
If you have been reading the series in order as I have, you will have come to know the strong, intelligent, observant and amazing woman that is Kendra Michaels. You will also see how she has her friends to help her and how her exceptional skills, along with the expertise and resources of others all work towards stopping a killing spree. With excellent pacing, action and danger at just about every turn, Double Blind is an excellent addition to an already thrilling series.
I had heard of author Iris Johansen but had read nothing written by her. Kendra Michaels, the protagonist of the book, was formerly blind. I had not known that this is Book 6 in the series. About 4 chapters into the book, I realized there had to be more and decided to see how many other books previously were written with Kendra and if I would want to know more about her. Not really. I like strong women but I did not get a feel for Kendra as being strong. Rather she came across as arrogant, unkind, always dripping with sarcasm and for me, not likable. At all! Anyway, a woman died trying to get a video of a wedding to her. Why? Kendra needs to find out why a video of a wedding should lead her to anything that someone would have been killed to get it to her. When we finally find out why three quarters of the way into the book, it was really convoluted for me. The interaction between her and Adam Lynch was just not real. I did like him though. Last page of the book, Kendra says to Adam, "arrogance, they name is Lynch." WHAT!? Because of who he is and what he does, secret work for the government, he needs to be on the down-low and yes, he is very good in what he does. I laughed out loud because she was describing herself. Kendra has extra sensory abilities because of having been blind for 20 years and she is often called in on cases by police or FBI. Doesn't make her a trained agent of any kind. (I am assuming she was not, but since I did not read the previous books perhaps she had been an agent). Even the ending, which leads the reader to believe that Kendra and Adam will meet in a war-torn country to fight evil...... And Adam can't stop her from going? Guessing that will be the next book. I really kept hoping for more because of the many books Ms. Johansen had written. I was disappointed.
This book started out interesting. It is my first Kendra Michaels book, and the aspect of her being previously blind and really honing her senses so that she notices more than the average person intrigued me. I wish there was more of that. The secrets and cover-up with Brock had so much potential (the turn it took to the actual killer was a let-down and the actions of those involved didn't really make sense).
I liked the characters, but the dialogue was not always well done. It didn't always flow or sound real to me. This book also had one of the worst sex scenes I have ever read. I almost took off a star because it was so bad.
Overall I like Iris Johansen's other series better, although maybe it was just this book.
Another great entry in the Kendra Michaels series. I thought this one had one of the more engaging mystery stories. Many of the others seemed to follow a theme of the profiler against the evil serial killer. This was similar but had enough of a mystery to make it enjoyable.
Also, the Adam/Kendra relationship took itself up a notch and was fun and maddening. Sometimes I just want to slap Kendra around. I mean, is it possible to write a strong female character who isn't a stubborn pain in the ass? #justsaying
There is a difference between a strong independent woman and a selfish, arrogant, spoiled brat. Kendra is supposed to be the first, but in this book she is written as the second. She is always angry no matter what anyone does, its always what she wants, she is nasty to her friends and colleagues and for an intelligent woman she continually makes stupid decisions. As for the plot of the book, it was choppy, not well written and wandered all around. Not sure what it was really supposed to be.
Double Blind by both Iris and Roy Johansen is an exciting thriller. A deadly game that could end up worse if not stopped soon. A serial killer is hired by a company to handle problems for them only that the killer goes off the edge and blackmails them. The killer is then able to get away with a lot more than planned. Murders are now being traced to the company and the company can't control their hired hired any longer. FBI is introduced into the case when a dead woman has something for someone they know...that's when the chase really begins...
Kendra Michaels is the lead female character. She is the one the FBI like to work with because of her ability to notice the smallest details quickly. Kendra cannot handle working on cases like the FBI does, because she hates seeing victims' families suffer. Death is never easy to handle. But now, a dead woman is found with a USB drive containing damaging evidence for her. Only she never knew the victim. It is only a matter of time before the FBI bring her in on the case. Kendra feels obligated to help since the dead woman tried to reach out to her. Other than that she wants noting to do with the case. But that's where it starts to get complicated. Her former FBI friend that she is attracted to, handles deadly crime stuff. She feels something more for him but she isn't allowing herself to fall in love. Adam Lynch wants Kendra Michaels as his woman. However, he knows it will be difficult to get to agree. She likes him just as much as he likes her but she won't open up. Instead, she pushes away from him. The new case is provides a tug of war in their relationship.
Overall, this new novel was suspenseful. I was deeply engaged from the start. Both Iris and Roy Johansen have caught my attention with Kendra Michaels. She is a detective for the FBI in a way. The personality was easy to latch onto as well as like. Kendra is a strong independent woman who won't let anyone or anything bring her down...Adam Lynch is a cocky good looking man who is smart and deadly to mess with. But when it comes to Kendra he makes mistakes and doesn't know how to approach her. I felt their push/pull relationship. It was intriguing and sad to follow. Double Blind was fast-paced. It kept me guessing the whole way. I highly recommend it to all.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
Kendra Michaels reluctantly agrees to assist the FBI with an unusual case and learns that the victim was carrying an envelope addressed to her. Inside, she finds a flash drive with a recording of a wedding reception. But she knows none of the people; she sees nothing that she recognizes.
Before Kendra and the FBI can figure out why the video was so important to the woman carrying it, the bride’s abduction sets in motion a hunt for a ruthless, depraved killer somehow involved in a plan involving a multi-billion dollar corporation. As the body count rises, can Kendra stop what’s been set in motion before it costs her everything?
Strong characters and a twisting plot with unpredictable reveals build suspense and keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The unfolding narrative often takes an unexpected turn, keeping tension high and building suspense. While the story concludes in a satisfactory manner, the ending clearly leads to the next book in this series.
