Having not read a recent Marvel comic in some time (truly, the late 1980s as a kid), more or less everything about this story came as a shock. The art and layout was dynamic, the story was shocking, and at the same time really down-to-earth.

The intent of the purchase was to provide a comic for my middle son, who is over-the-moon about Spider-Man. Being completely oblivious of the story, and without looking inside, we bought this one along with a few others (always read the summary, folks). Needless to say, we didn't make it very far before I realized the arc the story intended and ended story time before Slott could kill Peter Parker. I'm sure to many the change refreshed a very old character, but to a kid just introduced to the self-made, often struggling, very relatable Peter, this would have been crushing. It shocked me.

While I didn't continue with my son, I continued on, hoping for hints about Peter's survival. And there was one. And then, pretty quickly, there wasn't. Emotionally, this was a very distressing read. Not just because Slott destroyed Peter Parker, but because as we read through the story we realize, as did Peter, Otto Octavius is a better Spider-man. A better planner and a harder fighter, making the hard (albeit much easier for a sociopath) choices that make the world safer.

As troubling as I found the story, there's no question about the quality. This is a top notch story, taking a popular, well-aged character and turning it upside down. You don't necessarily like the new Peter Parker, but you accept his ability, his cunning, and realize Peter was simply too kind, and maybe too young, to be as effective. Intelligence, age, arrogance, and sheer ruthlessness makes the new Spider-man all but invincible.

The obvious question now: when (and how) Peter finds his way back, how will he repair his reputation and how can he ever compare to the superior Spider-man?

This book is an absolute roller coaster to read. Dan Slotts run on Spider-Man kicks into high gear on this one shaking up Spider-Mans world. I'm really looking forward to starting volume 2 now to see where the story goes.

2.5 rounded up. Honestly, I wish I knew why I didn't like this story. The coloring and artwork was phenomenal. I really enjoyed looking at the pages. As far as reading the storyline, it didn't do anything for me. I don't know if my dislike is because of my annoyance that Peter's entire character changed and two people and the Avengers immediately picked up on it. Or if it was the fact that so many different storylines (which I really should have expected) where all going on at once. I think the best part of this story for me was finally seeing Spider-Man doing what everyone else was doing, taking out the bad guys once and for all. Of course, this all added a layer of disdain for me, because when you have a hero who for so long has been a non-murderous, easy enough to get along with guy, suddenly becomes this person who is brutalizing and murdering people with witness, if just doesn't sit as right with you as you would've thought it would. I'm not going to lie, I won't be completing this series. It won't bother me one bit not knowing if Peter ever returns to himself or not. Also, I do like that for a while Doc Ock struggled with who he used to be and who is he is know. It was nice to see that he didn't just except his change, but had to actively remember who he was know. Although, I suppose by the end of this particular collection his was right back to doing Doc Ock (murdering) things just with a new face. And with the force of the mayor's office behind him.

The collected first part of the Superior Spider-man saga. Fantastic way of turning the Spider-man mythos on its head, instead of Spidey bonding with a symbiote and turning a dark turn this involves some mind swapping.

The premise of this is a dying Doc Ock swapping his mind with Peter Parker. This leads to some interesting ideas as Ock wants to be a better Spider-man than the original, both behind the mask and in the mask. This sees his personal life evolve in some interesting ways. Spidey himself takes a darker turn in his approach with villains, lots of new tech and adding an interesting dynamic to his relationship with the Avengers.

It will be interesting to see where this goes next. I highly recommend this if you want a jumping on point for Spider-man as no previous knowledge of storylines is needed, or if you want to see a different take on a great hero.

Back in sophomore year of high school I’d visit Wizard’s Asylum at least once a week to stay stocked up on all the important Marvel titles. Wizard’s & Marvel we’re raking it in from me. I had epiphany that spending $20 a week on these never-ending superhero stories was pretty stupid and I left it all behind. I didn’t miss it much either. Except…Spider-Man. I can’t tell you what the hell was going on in Thor, Cap, or the Hulk’s arcs in 2012 anymore, but I remember exactly what was going on with Spider-Man. He’s just been killed! Doc Oc swapped bodies with Spidey, Pete dies in Doc’s body, and Doc becomes the new (Superior!) Spider-Man. My mind was blown that day. Dan Slott seemingly ended the most Amazing comic run out there (starting in 1963 and ending at issue #700). Dude literally got death threats for this. Now, of course, no superhero really dies, but every superhero nerd has to be bought in and shocked by at least one of these deaths, and this was my time (clearly I wasn’t alone).

Every year or so I’ve checked back in to try to piece together what happened after all that, but if you step out of the churning machine of stories that is Marvel for just a short time, you have no clue what‘a going on (as I’m finding with the MCU these days). But it was clear, somehow(!), Peter got back in his body and all became well (they resumed the count at #701 and are now nearing #1,000) but, even though it probably hardly matters, it has tortured some part of me for a decade+ leaving off with ol’ Doc Oc running around in Spidey’s body and not knowing how it got resolved!

So I have finally time traveled back to my high school self to find out. Boy, have I just sunk right back in. Dan Slott is such a fantastic Spidey writer. Following Doc Oc as he breaks all the Spidey & Peter Parker rules while becoming the “Superior” Spider-Man is truly interesting and upsetting in a way that drives me from page to page to have this tension finally relieved at some point!

Anyway, onward! They’re onto you Doc.

It's been a couple of decades since I've read any new Marvel issues, so I was a little surprised to see Aunt May married and Peter and MJ not married, but that's just me. I thought also I had heard something about Peter unmasking himself to the world after that Civil War thing, but I guess that has since been forgotten? I am vaguely aware we are in an age of rebooting/relaunching every character and team and franchise every third Thursday, so my surprise was short lived, and I soon got into the fairly clever premise (thanks to the majick of comic book science).

Doc Ock as a "superior" Spider-Man, occasionally tempered by Peter's guilt/sense of responsibility, is a neat facet to explore for a 60-year-old character. Especially after he left behind Stan and the '60s, what, exactly, has been keeping Peter from balancing his personal and professional lives? You'd think after a few hundred issues MJ would have accepted Peter's responsibilities as a super-powered crime fighter, but, then again, you'd also think the rest of Hogwarts would have believed Harry by book 3 or 4 at the latest, so, you know, authors and stuff. Gotta fabricate that nonsensical tension and complications, I guess. But, as I was saying, the concept of the Superior Spider-Man is a nifty idea (especially when you get past all the awkward salacious stuff at the beginning).

You know the Avengers are in a weird place when Wolverine is the one telling them to calm down about one little execution. That's probably one flaw in this series: Mr. Slott dabbles with some moral quandaries but doesn't come to any conclusions other than "well, efficiency!" and moves quickly away from them. Perhaps he will revisit them later when Peter returns and has to face the consequences of Doc's actions.

Still, a Doc Ock resigning himself to making the world better works well for a while, though it doesn't take him too long to break out the "for the good of everyone" sort of talk and start playing benevolent dictator. For their own good, of course. (It worked so well for Doctor Doom.)

You don't need to know a whole lot of things to get into this series: if you don't remember Boomerang or know the more recent additions to Peter's professional life, such as his boss or Yuri Watanabe, this series does a decent job of reminding/teaching you the things you need to know (superficially, to be sure, but enough to trick you into thinking you are caught up) and letting you jump right in. Now, if this is your first ever experience with Spider-Man, you may be really confused, but if you've seen any of the movies, played any of the games, read any Spidey issue ever, you're probably ready to jump in here for a wild ride.

Even though the premise and idea of this whole comic is absolutely absurd, it somehow works and works very well. This is a really interesting take on if Doc Ock took over Peter Parker’s body and decided to be Spider-Man... which if you ignore the bad taste it leaves in your mouth to think of the logistics of it, you’re left with a very interesting meal.

I loved the three issues leading up to the superior spider man run it was a great way to end the last spidey era and begin this new one - it was still awkward when they tried to explain why Doc Ock would even want to be a good Spider-Man but again if you ignore the smell you can see a really nice view. Everything after that was again, interesting, in that it was so fresh for a Spider-Man story, the struggling with the old memories from peter and shedding them completely to give 100% conscious control to the Doc for it and the differences in approach that the doc has are very cool to see. It’s refreshing to see marvel going all in on an idea even if it was a temporary thing. It makes for amazingly interesting stories. It’s still silly but a lot funner than big time.

The art was really dodgy at times though. Sometimes there’s so much going on on page that I can’t visually compute what is happening. Other than that and the general stupidity of the story’s base idea I don’t have anything bad to say.

HAIKUPRAJNA - The Superior Spider-Man (2013) Comic Book Review
https://haikuprajna.blogspot.com/2022...
...
Hello readers,

I could talk about Superior Spider-Man all day; Dan Slott understood Peter Parker and was able to define him well.

Otto Octavius, having taken control of his nemesis, set out to do everything that Peter avoided so to prove that Otto's way was Superior, from going overboard against bullies to chumming it up with Mayor J. Jonah Jameson over their mutual distaste for Spidey. The bullying cycle casting Otto being rude to his henchmen and rogues in the same sympathetic light as Peter, with Spider-Man being Otto’s insurmountable antagonist, was an interesting development. Otto was desperate to hide behind the mask. Despite seeing his classic Doc Ock persona as his true self, unlike someone other than Peter like Miles or Miguel who saw Spider-Man as their identity, Otto proved that he, too, could be Spider-Man.

Peter’s few appearances were gold, Ghost Peter was a vestige of his love for MJ and his family which all came together to force Otto to do good.

Further conflicts Otto faced pitted him against the likes of antihero Cardiac, and the original Hobgoblin who was selling villain identities as franchises (Crime Master's among others, even his own to Phil Urich, the nephew of Daily Bugle's Ben Urich) which tied in nicely with the Goblin storyline.

Enjoyed seeing Miguel O'Hara remembering Peter among the other 2099 crossovers, which include the transition to Alchemax from Horizon Labs through Liz Allan, Normie Osborn and the Spider-Man 2099 Stone family. Peter's identity and Otto's victory over him was also played around with during plots featuring Agent Venom Flash Thompson, Wraith Yuri Wantanabe, Green Goblin Norman Osborn and Carlie Cooper, some of whom realizing they are unable to account for Spider-Man’s identity following Spider-Island.

It was funny when Otto tried to explain to MJ and the Avengers that Peter was taken over by Venom, where they asked each other if anyone bought the ruse.

The best part was Otto realizing he was unable to bleed Peter and Spider-Man together like Otto and Doc Ock, understanding, while dating Anna Maria, why Peter kept his lives separate, as Otto had never before been on the other side of the equation of love-interest-in-danger. Otto was superior, but that allowed Norman Osborn to take advantage of a Spider-Man who was too reliant on this superiority (as in the gadgets instead of relying on his philosophy). The contrast between Otto’s materialism, his needing the invaluable equipment, versus Peter’s being able to go with nothing at all, including building himself up from only a few memories, was refreshing and a good reminder of what makes his comics special. What took Otto months to prepare was undone by Osborn, and took Peter less than a day to suffer and prove how he was the superior Spider-Man.

Residual effects of this run include Otto’s achievements being known as Peter's, symbolized by the rise and fall of Parker Industries.

I had read Superior Spider-Man as it was being released, and I remember the online backlash from leaked photos of the Dying Wish prelude, which featured a fantastic twist that made me reread the issue. The Ben Urich annual by Christos Gage was phenomenal. The Age of Ultron tie-in was cool, too.

The part with Peter's Horizon co-workers dealing with the chronotons, fabric of time, which acted like film strips burning away into the page’s bleed had taken some getting used to, but I appreciate the artstyle. The ending also did feel rushed, and Peter versus Norman was short, but there are future Superior stories to fill the void while the Osborn plot continued through the Amazing Spider-Man’s relaunch.

In the end, this series was about how Peter was the Superior Spider-Man compared to Otto. Everything that defined Spider-Man was met with the antithesis and described as Superior. Ghost Peter was the idea of Spider-Man, which Otto embodied, but which took back control because Otto was failing to live up to it. Otto having to recall Peter’s memories to succeed where he was failing was what brought Peter back. I thought Otto failing to remember anything outside of the skimmed portions of Peter’s highlights was an awesome flex for longtime readers from the writer, where even these seeds were shown to be enough for the idea to grow into the full and authentic hero.

Thank you for reading.

My exact rating for this is 4.75, rounded up I gave it 5 stars. A definitely outstanding concept for a superhero story and for a long-time and well loved comic book character. Now I understand how much the Superior Spider-Man series revolutionized our usual perspective on superheroism. This is Dan Slott's best!

I cared less for Doctor Octopus but this book changed that and gave me a lot of respect for the character both as a villain and a hero. The grand plan of escaping death and body switching as premise is really genius. Otto's total hatred for Peter Parker fueled and catapulted his drive to surpass whatever the real Spider-Man achieved both as a normal person and as a crime fighter. He uses cold but logical approach in improving his capabilities while the success and flaws in his ways are also convincingly explored and readers can feel the slow build-up of it all into a grand finale (maybe in Volume 2). What we have here is a really different Spider-Man. For me, this is the best iteration of Spidey there is and the costume is great. A cliffhanger ending is a bit of concern but overall this collection is worth your money. Can't wait for the next volume.

In short, Superior Spider-man tells the story of Doc Octopus in Spider-man's body.

The long version:

This is a fresh take on Spider-man, reminding me much of Jean-Paul Valley's Batman.
As a strategist, Doc Ock is a far superior Spider-man, being able to anticipate all possibilities and devise a plan for pretty much any outcome (much like what Batman does).
He also doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and punishing those who threaten the safety of New York and its inhabitants. Despite his brilliancy in handling almost every situation, his ruthlessness is way out of hand, so much that it alerted the Avengers regarding this "change" in Spider-man's behaviour. Comparing both Peter and Octavius, my ideal Spider-man would be something between Peter Parker's attitude and Doc Ock's, to be honest. Not such much Parker's naivety and also a bit tone down regarding Ock's brutality. Peter could beat them up harder and Ock needs to beat them up less :)

This series also serves as a starting point for new readers, as they will learn with Doc Ock what it means to be Spider-man, and how with great power comes great responsibility. I'm looking forward for volume 2!

The first time I read the Superior Spider-Man was when it just came out in 2013. I really wanted to re-read this and I still love it so much.

A few years ago the whole series got re-released in two parts. In Part 1 we see the conclusion of the The Amazing Spider-Man series where Otto Octavius takes over Peter's body and becomes Spider-Man himself.

As Spider-Man, Otto wants to do different but still be a hero. He's more of an anti-hero, isn't afraid to kill or injure his villains. At the same time, Otto goes to university and even falls in love.

In part 1 we see villains like the Vulture, the Lizard, Morbius, the Hobgoblin and more. There's also a lot of set-up for the Hobgoblin and The Goblin King (better known as the Green Goblin) who will have a bigger part in part 2 (and become the main villain).

Having to piece together Dan Slott's Spider-Man run piece by piece in random order, but glad to be exposed to his Superior Spider-Man run. Surprised this was so well-crafted considering the blowback that was sure to come with replacing Peter Parker for as long as this did (and considering the blowback from previous attempts). Deft handling of the Octavius voice from the Spider-Man character. On to part two soon!

Even knowing the key hook of this storyline, I was still surprised by how it played out in the book's first few issues. And the series was consistently surprising in how differently Octavius takes his role from the way Parker did. A rare comic that manages to feel fresh while still fully tied to what came before. Bravo.

The run starts off with roller coast pacing, but once the Superior Spider-Man actually appears, things slow down. Exploring how Otto acts as Spider-Man and Parker is fascinating, but I missed that explosive energy Dan Slott brought before. We would get it back for the end of this book in another wild ride.

The writing is so good that I really felt sorry for poor Peter Parker. Story is all the way enjoyable and amazing but I did not like the involvement of Avengers here. Their presence and how they dealt with the parker going beserk situation made the story little less interesting.

"FROM NOW ON I AM PETER PARKER. I HAVE ALL OF YOUR MEMORIES. I KNOW EVERYTHING YOU KNEW. I HAVE YOUR LIFE AND EVERYTHING THAT COMES WITH IT. AND YOU ARE NOW OTTO OCTAVIUS. WITH WHAT LITTLE TIME YOU HAVE LEFT..."
- the mind of Doctor Octopus, occupying Spider-Man's body, to the mind of Peter Parker, trapped in Otto Octavius' dying shell.

"IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS, HE'S CHANGED. HE'S BRUTALIZED HIS ENEMIES. EVEN KILLED ONE OF THEM. I THINK WE'VE REACHED A POINT WHERE WE HAVE TO ASK -- DO WE STILL HAVE A PLACE FOR HIM HERE WITH THE AVENGERS."
- Captain America concerning Spider-Man.

"THE VOICE IS THE SAME. BUT THAT'S NOT THE SPIDER-MAN I KNOW. HE'S GOING TO KILL US ALL AND DAMN THE CONSEQUENCES."
- The Kingpin reacting to video surveillance of Spider-Man.

(This was so brilliant I had to use three quotes.)
You know the story. Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Then, a terminally ill super-villain pulls a mind-body swap and is suddenly parading around in boy's youthful skin like a spandex meat puppet while the boy's mind is trapped in the decaying carcass of his geriatric nemesis. You know, that ol' thing.
Dan Slott is a literal genius to explored so many cool possibilities with this composite character. With plenty of fantastic art by Camuncoli and Ramos, I found nothing to dislike in this title.
Over time, Spidey's heroic nature starts to permeate Otto's avarice and take the story in a real fun direction. Even mayor J. Jonah Jameson's attitude changes toward spidey as the ol' web head demonstrates that he is the superior superhero.
Fun. Original. Superior! Five stars.

¿No?

One of the greatest stories about Spider-Man I ever experienced. It has everything, a complex and layered plot, nice drawing quality, deconstruction of the known heroes that goes to expand and not erase the previously known information about them.

It follows the worst case possible scenario for Spider-Man, dying Doc Oc not only exchanges minds with him before Doc’s body stops functioning but successfully prevents any attempts to restore the natural order ending in Peter’s mind’s death. Nevertheless, Peter is able to do the last important thing, share his memories and his sense of responsibility and essence of being Spider-Man with Doc Oc in his own body. That creates a peculiar but interesting rendition of the character which mixes together Peter’s sense of his duty to help and protect the community with Octavius’ megalomania and perfectionism in the persona of Superior Spider-Man.

That’s a deconstruction done right.
Great, just great.

This is such a good premise and such a fun roller coaster ride and you definitely see the differences and how Otto versus Peter Parker handles things. The funniest part for me is that towards the end of this collection he’s falling into the same traps as Peter Parker Spider-Man, but in a different way. This book is also a roller coaster ride, where you’re just in for the fun and you shouldn’t think about the logic. It’s a spider-Man comic, have fun with it, such as a ghost, Peter Parker, talking to Otto then having a fight within Peter‘s mind. Even though it’s a different artist, as I think, this is a double shipped a month book, the art was consistent, which isn’t too surprising. I wasn’t a fan of some of the back up stories and the prelude to this I wasn’t a big fan of the yard but once we got into proper superior, I really enjoyed the art. Good time overall.

Despite the first few 5 book
of this trade where Peter/Doc Ock tries to rape MJ (yes, it’s consensual, but she thinks she’s going to have sex with Peter and not Doc Ock who has taken over Peter’s mind and body), this isn’t a bad series.

Lots of drama and action. Kinda shows that Ock is a little bit smarter than Petey but trying to work smarter and not harder.

For instance, he plasters the city with mini robots to do his patrolling while he can relax. He gets upset that Peter could have earned a doctorate if he just finished ONE credit and a thesis to turn in!

Where Ocl’s whole persona is being Doc Ock, he soon discovers that it really isn’t easy being a hero with outside responsibilities and that having a secret identity is a lot of work.

Overall, this is a good start to the series and looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

This book was fun and really cool to see Spider-Man doing villain stuff. I didn’t like some of the dead bodies that were shown outright cause they gave me night terrors but it’s ok.

Hated how long it took for carlie to take action, and why doesn’t she just go to the avengers?? I know the avengers are difficult to contact but she could do something!! The kingpins Base being destroyed was cool and so was superior Spider-Man’s minion army and evil island.

The cover art gallery at the end is dumb and pointless; too small and too blurry.

Definitely gonna read the rest plus I wanna see the founding of Parker industries.
