Pawn is book two in the Mr. Rook’s Island series by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. I have been waiting on the edge of my seat for this book after reading book one, Mr. Rook. And Mimi did NOT disappoint me. This book was a constant roller coaster with me flying along by the edge of my fingertips. Just when you think you have the answers, in true Mimi Jean fashion, she throws in another zinger and another spiral begins.

Stephanie Fitzgerald has traveled to Mr. Rook’s island to find answers. Her sister, Cici, had been a guest on the island several months ago and never returned. Stephanie and Cici were very close, her sister more like her mother than her sister. And she can’t rest until she knows what happened to her. Now, Stephanie has become an employee on Rook’s fantasy island. What better way to continue her search for answers, as an insider. Only, her unwelcome attraction to Rook keeps her off balance.

“I felt adrift in a big messy world. I had no sense of direction or roots anymore. All I had was sadness and fear - of Warner Price, of Rook, of my future.”

roller coaster gif

Not only does Stephanie have to deal with the constant stream of questions she is trying to find answers to regarding the mysterious Rook, she has to deal with the situation she left at home, Warner Price. He is the man she went to for the money in the first place so she could go to Rook’s island. He is not the sort of man you want to owe anything to. And she owes him big time.

We learned a lot in this book, or at least we think we did. Rook finally seems to come clean with some of his story but of course, just when we think we have all the answers, something else happens. And of course, Mimi Jean leaves us hanging by our fingernails once again until the next book, Check, comes out.

Pawn, book #2 of the Mr. Rook's Island series by Mimi Jean Romance

I was trying to figure out what shelf to file this book on, contemporary? Or paranormal? I’m still not sure. This is a hot, suspenseful, romance but it also has plenty of mysterious, magical aspects to it as well. So I’m still not sure. I also still haven’t been able to decide if I love James Rook, or hate him. My mind changes about every other chapter. I do guarantee you, though, that he is off the charts sexy. All I am sure of is that it’s amazingly fantastic and I can’t wait for the next book to get here.

Fantasy Island Part Two!

This book was every bit as good as the first. But what do you expect from Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. She does funny and steamy so well. In this book, Stephanie gets a job on Mr.Rook’s island because she knows Rook and the staff are lying to her and keeping secrets. Stephanie is determined to find out everything and see if the secrets have anything to do with her sister’s death. It turns out the island has some big supernatural secrets!

I felt like every step I took got me further away from the truth and brought me closer to my own demise. Because my heart was broken, and so was I. Yet, for a moment, when Rook offered me a home, I’d felt hope again.

The book starts with Stephanie in the role of the executive manager of the island that she truly hates and with Mr. Rook far away. He obviously gives her space to do her research and to appreciate his work.
Is he ever coming back?
Will they ever have sex?
Yes.
And YES.

The truth is out. And Stephanie has chosen to believe Mr. Rook for the first time. Despite the fact that Mr. Rook had a horrible past and that he may not even have a future; Stephanie likes this version of truth. It could be her fantasy or maybe Mr. Rook’s fantasy.

And then when she least expects it, she hears another version of the truth. A version that does not include her sister dying after swimming in the middle of the night. A new version that has her sister being sacrificed and murdered.

Can she run away fast enough? And has she chosen the right enemy? Maybe the enemy is outside the island.

The story untangles a bit after the middle of the book, but then it becomes more complicated towards the end and stops again with a cliffhanger. The paranormal elements are strong again. Or maybe Stephanie is on drugs and she is delusional. Or maybe Mr. Rook is a bad boy who likes telling lies.

I wish there are more than three books in this series. There is so much space for so many more new twists. I am looking forward to book 3, “Check”. Hopefully soon…

I hope you had a pleasant stay in our island and please leave your soul back here on your way out.

NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author Mimi Jean Pamfiloff returns with the 2nd title in her #RomanticSuspense series, Mr. Rook's Island, PAWN

What a twisty emotional roller coaster this was! I was hooked from start to finish. I love that we got answers but still have questions.

Pawn is book #2 of the Mr. Rook's Island series by author Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. This is not a standalone book and it is advised to the books in order. It is told from the heroine's POV and ends with a cliffhanger.

Oh my heart, Another MJP hit!

Ahhh, the webs we weave…She started out hiding her true purpose for coming to the island, now she is also hiding her feelings for the man in charge, the sexy, mysterious and powerful force known as Mr. Rook. Will Mimi Jean Pamfiloff throw Stephanie a bone or force her to endure the hot and cold emotions of the intimidating Mr. Rook for another few hundred pages? Is she going to give her readers a chance to actually take one complete breath without wanting to swoon?

PAWN should come with a warning, expect to feel like you are attending a sinfully exotic tennis match as Stephanie squares off against her new boss in a wickedly tantalizing game of love.

Just when you think you are following every twist and every passionate page, that you just KNOW what will happen next, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff ramps up her game and serves another shot that leaves both your head and your heart spinning! There’s magic on the island and magic in the words of an author who teases both her characters and her readers with more heat, more passion, more stunning reveals and yes, one more cliffhanger! Well played, well timed and well, I’m hanging on for more, by a thread…

Darker, more dramatic and definitely more temptation-filled in a dreamlike tropical paradise with an uncertain future, but guaranteed, the sins of the flesh never felt so good for two people who dare to tempt fate, looking for their perfect fantasy to become real! Pass the ice water...please!

I have no idea what to believe after reading Pawn. This book was like on big Nancy Drew episode up until the end when that bomb was dropped. But was it a truth bomb or a false one? I need to know! And how in the world are they going to fix that very big problem we were left with? This series is crazy and highly enjoyable. You must start at book one or you are going to be mightily confused. Well, at least less confused. I'd like to predict what's going to happen, but I don't think that I can. Rook's got some explaining to do...

I almost forgot about this...
And now that I m on my vacay I had extra time to do some reading...lol

This author writes fantastic fantasy/paranormal/mystery genre and she excells in it.

I didnt enjoy in this sequel as I have with first, but it finally answered the long lingering mysterious haze surrounding the tall dark and mysterious (duh?!) Mr. Rook and his fantasy island.

And yeah...I kinda guessed it too...but nevertheless, Ms Pamfiloff brings the mystery to its revelation light only so she could end it all with another one right in your face...lol

So you say, damn you're good and move on to the final installment.

Well here we are back on the mysterious island not too far from the Bermuda Triangle and secrets are finally being revealed. Rook might have blown hot and very cold with Stephanie before but now he’s playing a very frustrating game. Stephanie has managed to convince him he needs to employ her but Rook seems to be watching and always a step or two ahead. Yet I can reassure those who ship this tangled relationship that things get pretty incendiary as Rook shows Stephanie exactly what they’ve both been missing out on !
As a reader it’s easy to guess at some secrets but the twists keep on coming until I’m pretty sure even the author gets surprised. If honest I’m not sure I always like Stephanie as she seems to keep changing her mind constantly about what she really wants. Rook is such a dichotomy, distant and yet caring passionately. The magic of the island is being tested and so is Rook but he’s not the only one who hasn’t exactly been completely upfront. As a reader I know Stephanie has her own reasons for being there but her methods seem about to come back to haunt her. Nothing is black and white as this book ends but I’m very sure everyone will be screaming for more !
This voluntary take is of a copy given to me and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

*insert sexy and / or cool chess reference here,* no seriously, I don’t know how to play chess soooo….
What I can tell you is that Pawn has some serious smolder and a decent amount of exploding bonfires, this book is H O T.

With all Mimi Jean Pamfiloff books, if you have the chance to buy the box set or daisy chain a series then you’re gonna need some serious caffeine. Her books reel you in and leave you sleepless. But, don’t let that stop you from getting Pawn (get Rook too if you haven’t already, trust me on this) because she has plenty of books in her other series to keep you busy while you wait for Check to come out.

Mimi has sucked me in again with the second installment of Mr. Rook’s Island, where everyone’s wildest dreams come true, along with some of their darkest nightmares. We once again get to see Rook and Stephanie and try to tease away the lies from the truth as these two dance around their attraction and the secrets of the island.

As Stephanie settles into her job of helping Rook run the island and gets a better look at the inner-workings of the fantasies that exist, the covers are slowly pulled back and more clues as to the real purpose of the island are revealed. We were given a glimpse in the first book, but here we get confirmation of what we suspected. We watch as Rook falls more in love with Stephanie, and Stephanie grapples with her mission: should she spy on Rook as revenge for her sister’s death? Or believe him when he tells her versions of the truth that can’t possibly exist?

It all sounds very cryptic, but it’s impossible to review this second story of the trilogy and not give something away. All you need to know is that this book pulls you in and leaves you with more questions at every turn. You think you have things figured out and then Mimi hits you with yet another twist to ruin everyone’s best laid plans and turn the story in another direction.

This book is yet another reason why I adore this author and her brand of paranormal. How she can weave the fantastic into the mundane to create something magical and at the same time, totally believable. I can rationalize the outrageous claims of her characters and I can imagine a place like Rook’s Island exists.

And ever the Queen of the Cliffhanger, we are left craving more. I am eagerly awaiting Check, the final book in this series, and at the same time dreading having to leave this deceptively beautiful and enchantingly evil island.

I think Mimi Jean Pamfiloff’s Mr Rook’s Island series is one of the more bizarre reads I’ve ever come across in the romance genre at least. Like a mix of the old tv series Fantasy Island (whose protagonist’s name even resembles Mr. Rook), Survivor and Stephen King’s horror stuff with some gothic elements thrown in, ‘Pawn’ pretty much continues in the vein of the female protagonist who pokes around an island that promises every fantasy come to life.

And that’s where the fun and doubts start, because nothing is as it ever seems, period.

Written wholly in Stephanie’s POV, the reader, in the same boat as Stephanie, falls down the rabbit hole into places that take on a life of their own and with people who never quite tell the truth, though it’s unclear when and what they’re lying about. In the centre of the maelstrom itself is the mysterious enigmatic James Rook, with whom Stephanie feels a strange connection yet can’t fully trust. Dreams and nightmares start to meld into reality and you, like Stephanie, start wondering how loopy things can get before it starts to break down.

I’d initially thought that the first book was merely suspense, but ‘Pawn’ makes it clear that there is a strong paranormal element that runs through this series. There are certainly some questions answered—questions that I had from the very start—though even more remain, with several loose plot ends that the cliffhanger ending quite annoyingly leaves hanging.

As with the first book, I’m not entirely certain how to rate this one. There’re the combinations of the sacred and the profane running throughout here, so perhaps this step into the forbidden (in so many ways) and the weird paranormal is what makes the the book a hard one to put down. At the same time, it’s hard to really ‘like’ the pairing with a distrustful and flaky female lead by the time ‘Pawn’ ends and Rook’s lack of transparency, just when you think they’ve kind of found their HEA. So maybe this 3-starred rating is an arbitrary one (I’ve honestly never done this before), just because Pamfiloff is managing to keep me so off-centre with this.

I'm speechless. My mind feels like mush. I feel like I've been in a washing machine on a fast spin.

This picks up straight where Rook ended and I knew where we were going with the story until WHAM! no I was wrong. Ms P totally threw one of Rook's curve balls and set me off on another of those darned island forest paths. So just as I got comfortable BAM! in the last chapter she totally upends EVERYTHING and now I don't know where I am, which is up or down and I think I might need my blankie and the snuggle -corner whilst I mull things over.

I really can't say much about the book without spoiling this AMAZING story that will hold you gripped and unable to put the book down until you've finished it. It will leave you, to paraphrase Stephanie, mind-f**ked, but in the best possible way.

When you think a secret has been revealed, before long you discover it wasn't maybe the whole truth, or it was part of the truth or it was yet another layer of this damn 'onion' of a book that had me peeling off layer after layer desperate to get some understanding. I NEED book 3 as of right now before my head explodes.

Whilst you possibly could read this without having read Rook first, you will be playing catch-up AND you will have missed out on reading another amazing book. My advice? Read them both and then hassle the author until she releases Book 3 for us.

Holy Hell!!!!!!!! You and those cliffhangers!!! Do they sell them in bulk to you or do you have a lifetime supply of them on standby???

Pawn blew my mind in more ways than I can explain. When I a read a story I can usually feel all the emotions the characters are projecting or feeling. Whether its a male/female telling his/her p.o.v or they're doing their best to get through the emotional baggage that each of them have. I'm always a mess when I'm reading any book especially if its a Mimi Jean book.

Stephanie feels she's close to figuring out Rook's secret. If only she knew how big and shocking it would be. The longer she's on the island her connection to island gets stronger and more dangerous. The connection to Rook is also there and try as she might she can't let it go or him. Will she be ready for Rook and all his truth or will the truth be her undoing?

Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is a devious goddess divine who knows how draw her readers in with her magic and delivers a story, a world that sucks you in and doesn't let go. As the story ends your mind goes to all the possible scenarios and just when you think you know what comes next, Mimi throws you for a loop and then inserts evil laugh while your yelling NOOOOO, OMFG and etc.

ARC REVIEW

I can't really divert away from the blurb to much without revealing too much of the story. I will say that Mimi Jean Pamfiloff seamlessly blended together King, Mermen, and Fantasy Island to make a mysterious island with more secrets than El Corazon and a man with all most as many than King.

Classic Mimi, seriously she is the mistress of answering question with more questions and leaves you satisfied but still wanting more. Yes, that means cliffhanger.

Stephanie's new job on the island gives her the perfect opportunity to dig into Rook's secrets she knows he's still not telling her the full truth about what happened to her sister. All she needs to do is resist the sexual pull she has toward Rook and put off a mob boss. Her dreams can lead her to the truth. But is she really cut out for this, can she handle the truth or is that all a lie too?

Overall, it's another mindfuck by Mimi and I loved it.

This is book 2 in the series Mr. Rook's Island. Once again Mimi pulls you in and you don't want to put the book down till you've completed it.  Then comes the anger that your finished and know you have to wait till the next one to find out how it all comes together. The book starts off with Stephanie starting her new job on the island, but Mr. Rook doesn't know that she is still searching for the truth behind Cici's death. Every chance she gets she's looking into the lies he's told and the secrets of the island.  She is attracted to him but can she resist? Is he really a Monk? Is he attracted to her too? Can they find their happy ever after? But wait, what about the other job she has to do for Warner Price? Secrets are revealed but still more crop up. A other great ride, along with another great mystery to keep you guessing and wanting more.

This is the second book in the “Mr Rook’s Island” series. The story takes up where the the first ended so I recommend reading the first book, “Mr. Rook,” before reading this one. It’s a contemporary fantasy set on a hidden island that is fiercely protected by its owner, Mr. Rook.

The story is complex and frustrating. You never know if truths are being reveled or lies being told. All the characters have secrets. All are hiding their true intentions. None are innocent.

I was at times hopeful for the main characters, that they would find their HEA. So much stands in their way for happiness. I can't wait to the next book in this series. It is going to be agonizing for me. Please Mimi Jean... I already need my next Mr. Rook fix.

I loved reading the outstanding and intriguing second book in the Mr. Rook's Island series. Even though Stephanie feels an irresistible pull towards Rook and her feelings for him continue, Rook is trying not give into his cravings. While Stephanie is working for Rook, she is bound and determined to find out what really happened to her sister. Read the highly recommended, exciting and engaging full of mystery and romance, and a cliffhanger that leaves the reader full of anticipation for the third book in the Rook series.

5 amazing stars

Holy. Crap. Just when you think you have an idea on where Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is going with her book and series, well damn, then she throws Pawn in your face and needless to say: mindblown. I don't even know what to make of it any more. Seriously, how in the world am i supposed to come up with some sort of hypothesis on what the next instalment will be like when she totally destroyed whatever i thought with her twists! Gah!

4.5 sexy dreams

While the many scene between Mr. Rook and Stephanie weren't the most explicit i've read from this author, the sexual tension and the promise of what could have been was so incredibly high that boy... i almost wish there was so much more, but at the same time, i don't, be prepared for everything and nothing (you thought would) to happen, because i promise you that nothing will come close to what will actually happen! To say that this book was epic is an understatement. Check, the next book, is among one of the next anticipated release of mine for 2017/2018.

Incredible! What a wild, white knuckle ride this book was and oh yes so delicious! This book picks up where book one left us, waiting to see what Stephanie's plan was now that she was staying on the island in Mr Rook's employ. Assuming Mrs. Day's old job was going to be a challenge for Stephanie all the while she was still trying to root out all the information on Rook that she could. I had to chuckle when she meets her new roommate in employee housing. She's given the tour by Luke, and given her official uniform. There were times when I felt bad for her, hearing one story after the other and every one of them a contradiction of the previous. Add Rook into the mix with his mood swings and secrecy it made for many a head spinning moment. All the twists and turns in this book; there were a few times I held my breath and then just when I thought I could relax, wham! Mimi threw in another curve, swerve and dip. We do see the mystery of the island unfold a little more, at least Rook's version of it and Stephanie... I don't know what to say about the stubborn girl who manages to get herself into more trouble on her own, she needs no outside help. When the only shoe she has left drops, make that a flip flop, she does what she does best. She runs. But why I asked myself? Where does that leave us here and what is coming in the next book? I sat here with more questions than I should have and wow, what a book hangover! This story is so well written and so many layers it really deserves a second read. Impatiently waiting for the next book.

Fantasy Island indeed...

Mimi Jean Pamfiloff is by far the queen of cliffhangers, I say that because at the end of Mr. Rook (book 1 of this series) Stephanie finds herself in a very precarious situation and unfortunately, closing the cover on this installment, well let's just say, things are not looking up. In fact, it's ugly and scary.

Stephanie gets a big shock at the end of book 1 when she discovers who James Rook really is and still hell bent on discovering the truth about what really happened to her sister, she makes a life altering decision. She soon discovers she hasn't even scratched the surface of the secrets surrounding Rook's Island or the man to which she's magnetically drawn.

Secrets and lies and love all have a way of making life chaos and when James finally confesses the secrets he hides and professes his love my emotions went into complete chaos. Happy and heartbroken all at once and completely blindsided by the turn of events. Rook's aunt, the wild card, friend or foe...I guess we'll have to wait and see.

When I sat down to do this review, I spent a long time staring at my computer screen before my fingers started to move, this story, even though it's fantasy and entertaining, will make you think. Are there really people who would sacrifice so much?
Don't forget to live in the moment...life is short.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of Pawn.

Since I have a horrible memory, I have to make mention of how great Mimi is at reminding us of what happened in the previous book so seamlessly. You could almost pick up book two without reading the first, but highly recommend not doing that. You don't want to miss the first book!

Mimi always writes strong, intelligent female leads, and Stephanie definitely hits that mark. Hell, she's stronger than I would've been with all those gorgeous men around. Lol. But that brings me to another point: world building. This series has a wonderful, twisted, dark, brilliant and complicated world, giving us its secrets, yet leaving more questions.

For anyone who has read any book by Mimi, I don't think I need to mention how great her writing is, or how the editing is perfection.

I was up until 4:30 this morning reading this, because I just couldn't put it down. I should've known better than to start it at night. My bad, and I'll be suffering today, but it was well worth it! Can't wait for the next one!!

A real roller coaster ride!

Rook and Stephanie's story continues...and in true roller coaster fashion, there were a ton of ups and downs.

The beginning was a bit like a kiddie-ride with a couple of thrilling moments. Quite enjoyable, but nothing to give me whiplash.

Then there was a plateau in the middle that took me through Sappy Mushville (population: 3). In case you were wondering, those 3 people were me, Rook, and Stephanie - it wasn't quite so thrilling. But I knew there were a lot of tidbits that weren't adding up, and I could feel the slow, steady climb toward the apex of this ride.

And sure enough, BAM: I got a California Screamin' loop-de-loop ending. Now I'm going to need to read the 3rd book! Can't wait!

The measure of a good book can usually be found in how quickly you read it because you just can’t put it down.
Even though that’s true with Pawn, I found the measure of this book to be in how many times I looked at the corner of my kindle app and was completely disappointed to see the numbers increasing. I was at 20%, 43%, 76% of the book...Nooooooo! I never wanted it to end!
An absolutely thrilling continuation of the Mr. Rook’s Island series. Still a fan of the cliffhanger here, Mimi keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very end.
This is such a great series! Not to be missed. 5 stars!!!

Pawn is the second book in Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's Mr. Rook's Island series. Stephanie has decided to stay and take over Mrs. Day's position, running the whole show on the island. While learning her new job, she's trying to get closer to James Rook, figure out who the VIP members are, and maybe get to the truth about what happened to her sister, CiCi. Will Stephanie be able to resist the ultimate temptation that is Rook? Will she finally learn the island and Rook's secrets once and for all? And what will she do with that knowledge If she does find out?
