I read two Stratus Detective books by A. S. A. Durphy – a novel (The Thing Speaks for Itself), and a novella (A Wolf By the Ears). I don’t know if A Still and Silent Sea is a novella or a short story. Doesn’t matter. The first two books have Gracie Stratus as a grown woman. She is working on having her own Private Investigations Company. She is currently my favourite female fictional character: tough, smart, savvy, and some of the time, vulnerable. A Still and Silent Sea has her as a 12-year-old girl, whose father has dragged her and her four-year-old brother to Scotland for an archaeological dig. Her mother died several years ago, and her father has the empathy of a stump, when it comes to his children. His team find a priceless Viking treasure trove, and while the men of the camp are drunkenly celebrating their find, the treasure and Gracie’s brother disappear. Gracie goes after whoever took her brother. She is relentless. She misses no detail of her surroundings. She has a pretty good idea where to look. She is up against two adults, either of which could pound her flat. And still she moves forward, an irresistible force of nature. Burned, bruised, soaked, and wearing a T-shirt for protection against daunting weather conditions, she will not give up on rescuing her brother. She is currently my favourite 12-year-old female fictional character
A Still and Silent Sea written by A.S. Durphy is a well written short story describing Scotlands landscape on a great archaeological dig for buried treasure (artifacts). Roger Stratis, an archaeologist takes his two children, Gracie (age 12) and Russell (age 4) along with him. He does engage a nanny to look after his son Russell but practically ignores their existence. Maybe he blames them for their mother's death. Or my be his just doesn't want to be bothered by then. Maybe, he is to absorbed in his job or his greef? I really don't know. This is a tale of how one brave girl must save her brother from the clutches of Coira the nanny and Waylan Green, her boyfriend and maybe retrieve the Viking artifacts they had stolen. My only disappointment was some profanity towards the end of the story. It was so unnecessary. It added no value to the story. This action packed story was well worth my time and I would recommend it for an afternoon get a way time. I received a copy of this book for an voluntary honest review.☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
A Still and Silent Sea - Written by ASA Durphy An archaeological dig, two kids, and some stolen artifacts…..
This is a tale of how one brave girl must save her brother from the clutches of Coira, the nanny and Waylan Green, her boyfriend and maybe retrieve the Viking artifacts they had stolen.
What did I like? Like many that have lost mates sometimes the children get lost in the grief. This was that story that leaves these kids to their own and how they survive with each other in the mist of being involved with the theft of the stolen artifacts.
What will you like? A well-written story with developed characters that will lead you on a merry chase. It shows the love and devotion of a sister to her little brother and what she will do to keep him safe. The are plenty of descriptions of the Scotland landscape and the dig. There was some profanity that left me a little off, but it is a fact of life. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
