An excuse to live in Keatyn's crazy world a little bit longer…
I can best describe the Keatyn Chronicles as a masterfully addictive conundrum. A guilty pleasure. An incessant drama that got under my skin imprinting me with frustration, exasperation, and expectation. I found myself enjoying a world of adolescent, over-the-top drama with ubiquitous emotions. I loved every second of it. I was so excited to read Captive Films: Season One, giving me an excuse to live in Keatyn's crazy world a little bit longer. However, I was terrified. I loved how Keatyn's story ended. I had closure, a sense of completion. Did I need more? DId I want more? What if Captive Films unclosed my closure?
Like the very conundrum that makes the Keatyn Chronicles so fascinating, my emotions surrounding this new edition were a bit conflicting; conflicting with a tad of indifference. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the more, but the moreness took a while to get use to. If you go into this series with the expectation of a Keatyn Chronicles sequel, you will be disappointed, because this is something different; totally different. It took me about three episodes to get use to the different, and then I became wrapped up in it. Fans of the series will love getting to experience their favorite characters, but the experience is something new and very far from what we've come to associate this series with. Not a bad different, but something you need to be prepared for.
If you're expecting a novel then this isn't it. It's exactly what the description says, these are episodes. This requires a style of writing that's an evolution of what you might be use to.
I chose not to read season one an episode at a time. Instead, I read the entire series straight through, in one sitting, it was addictive. But just like a movie is created in a way that's different from a TV series, this is done in a way that's different from a novel.
It was tough to not want to compare this to the original KC series, it's human nature. In fact, I failed, but doing that held me back in loving this as much as I hoped. It was entertaining and I was thrilled to get more, but I think I entered with an altered expectation making an impossibly out of meeting them.
Thinking about Captive Films as more of a spinoff series (which technically it is) will enhance the overall experience. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read more and I hope there's a season two!
I was very surprised that I liked this book as much as I did! I'm sure part of the reason is that it's written like a reality show and I love reality shows! The characters are mature adults and the story is told from multiple points of view, which I loved reading.
I'm not one to get star-struck but if you are I am pretty sure you'll like this book. Even though I'm not easily star-struck it was still fun reading all the various characters in their roles of actors, producers, lawyers, and more. The male characters are dreamy and will likely give many readers book boyfriend crushes. And the women were just as beautiful as the men. It is definitely a Hollywood life among the characters in this book.
Kaetlyn is the owner of Captive Films, so as one would imagine she lives quite the lifestyle which includes being so busy that she has little time for her own wants and needs. She has to decide what is really important in life to her.
Riley most definitely would attract many women with his wealth and his sexy-gorgeous alpha male personality, even though he's a womanizer. Just like Kaetlyn, though, he also has some things to consider for his own life. Is his life of luxury enough?
There are several other characters that I believe can teach the reader a lot about what is really important in life. Sure, dreams should be pursued, and they are in this book; but the characters also grow up and like most people realize the importance of a good, healthy relationship and things such as family.
Well, damn you, Jillian Dodd. Now you've gone and sucked me into another one of your worlds and there's no way back. Knew this would happen! I freaking LOVED this book. I loved all the different pov's, loved catching up with my fav characters from The Keatyn Chronicles now that they are older and (supposedly) wiser. Riley disappointed me a lot but he is still so heartbroken so I cut him some slack. That ending was brilliantly awful and there's no way I can't continue. I need Riely and Ariela to get their HEA as they so deserve it. Knox is a scream. Still love, love Aiden, and it was great to catch up with Dawson and Dallas too. Aw, I have all the feels.
I really liked how this was structured into different scenes and love the Hollywood setting.
If you have read TKC then this is a must read. If you haven't I recommend starting with that series first.
I have been trying to save these so I could read them all in one go but I kept seeing little comments and my curiosity won out. It was great to catch up with the Keatyn Chronicles crew. Older and wiser in most cases seeing the older versions of the teenagers we grew to know and love was a joy to read and glad to see that they can still have their shenanigans. For fans of the Keatyn Chronicles these are a must read (full review to come)
I love almost every Jillian Dodd book. But this one really tired me out. Here are my issues with it:
1. It felt like a fanfiction. There was almost no character DEVELOPMENT. I couldn't for the life of me remember why people like Vanessa and Knox were relevant. And Jennifer Edwards is basically Jennifer Lawrence. Half the time, we were catching up on their lives through long dialogues and monologues, like a very explicit "Where are they now?" piece. Everything was told instead of shown.
2. Furthermore, everything that happened seemed almost too EASY. I really don't think it's realistic for so many of these people to stay together with their high school sweethearts. It's actually kind of sad to think that they've never branched out or opened themselves up to new people. And the few who did are so miserable in life, just begging to get back together with their "one true high school love." You really can't expect all these people to be exactly the same.
3. I've come to realize that a lot of Jillian Dodd's characters have a lot of the same qualities, particularly the main ones. They all participated in greek life (frats/sororities). They all want four kids (seriously!). They're all rich and beautiful, but smart too. It's almost like these books project a fantasy of the good life, the American dream, or whatever we're all supposed to want. I wish there was more diversity and acknowledgment of different backgrounds and aspirations.
4. There's a lot of privilege here that makes me resent some of these characters. Yes, they're driven and they work hard. But so does everyone else. You think Tyler doesn't clock in long hours? I think it's hugely unfair that a relative could drop in out of NOWHERE and become a Senior Vice President of a multi-million dollar company, especially without relevant experience in the field. No Board of Directors would let that fly, except... oh wait, the nepotism extends there too. The main characters walk around, proudly patting themselves on the back for their accomplishments. But that's because these people have the capacity to start a production company out of HIGH SCHOOL, thanks to their rich and well-connected families. I understand where Ariela's parents are coming from, if they had to earn their fortune. Not everyone has the luxury to gamble on something that's not a sure thing (especially in such a tough industry). Opportunity doesn't come knocking for everyone, and I wish something in the story reflected this.
Not a one-star rating because I still enjoyed catching up with these familiar characters. What can I say, it's totally a guilty pleasure of mine. That being said, I don't see myself purchasing season 2 (or rather, "Power") in the foreseeable future.
Addictive, Captivating, Entertaining. That is the best way to describe this season. As a fan of serial series’, I really loved this. I read the entire season in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. This story totally reads like a soap opera. You are completely sucked in and can’t get enough of the drama these characters are going through. Captive Films Season 1 has it all: Sex, Drama, Misunderstandings. It was so entertaining! I can’t wait to read more.
*An ARC copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review*
Ruined Riley... the ending is cliche and irritating. The fact that none of these characters made friends outside of high-school and all of Keatyn's east cost friends moved to California isn't realistic or interesting. They all still act like teens. Expand the world. Not going to continue. The whole premise is built on nostalgia because there really isn't any central conflict except making sure every last character she creates gets paired up.
I also don't like the lack of diversity. This is a white world and even in the previous books the ONLY black character is a stereotype. Who calls girls hoes and knocked up multiple young girls and no one liked if even though he was popular. That honestly is hurtful. This lack of care for marginalized groups has continued in the spin off.
In this lily white, hetero-normative world where people start new relationships even gay people are stereotyped and treated as props rather than people. Sander only being gay to serve Keatyn as a poor tricked girl. And this new secretary being an over the top characters who I doubt will explore or find real love based on Dodd's exclusion of diverse people in her casting. And really just to point out Riley choosing a secretary he couldn't sleep with rather than because this characters sexuality is relevant.
Says a lot about the kind of people she thinks are important. Disappointing.
Fame - Hollywood Love Series, kicks off with Riley. Always loved Riley in the Keatyn Chronicles when they were in high school. I enjoy he and Keatyns dynamic.
In Fame he is all grown up and living life to the fullest. Women, wine and something. LOL
Keatyn and Aiden are still adorable even with the pressures of adult life. Keatyn has matured so much over the span of the series. She is not always on board with Riley's life decisions but backs him up because of their long standing friendship.
Ariela makes an appearance in Fame. Her life is not what she expected and she has to make some changes. Trying to reconnect with old friends doesn't really pan out like she thought.
Vanessa is the bad a** we all wish we could be. Riley's brother Dawson makes an appearance in Fame as well.
The foundation is layed in Fame for future developments relationship wise and business wise for all of the characters. It is like watching a soap opera but a million times betters.
This book started off a little slow for me, because there was more reminiscing and the hashing out of the characters relationships with one another than I'd like. Honestly if you have not read The Keatyn Chronicles then start there! I know what's going on in my favorite soap opera so lets get to the good stuff, ya know? The plot picked up and ended on a cliff hanger... seriously, there better be a second book! It was a little rocky at times, sometimes the conversation didn't flow very or read very well, like maybe she rushed this book a little? But this is purely entertainment fluff reading and you can't expect too much. Regardless- I'm in. I'm ready for book two.
I forgot how much I loved Keatyn and Crew. This was like going home after college and finding out how your HS friends grew into really great adults. I always adored Riley and let's say he's off the rails. There is some shocking stuff about other characters and I'm so glad the author bundled all the novellas into one read because I don't do short serial reads. I'm looking forward to Season 2 when it's complete.
It was so fun getting to catch up with the characters from The Keatyn Chronicles. Some of the characters are how I expected and others have had some really rough times. There's plenty of steam in this serial and lots of laughs, too. Can't wait to read season 2!
This book is about a bunch of one dimensional characters having sex all the time, and then one old guy has a few lines of ,Dani bless dialogue and the heartbreak is over. Hated it. Skimmed thru most of it.
And I don't think there's a way for me to remember at this point what happened in book 1 vs 2 vs 3, etc, so this will be a general review. Let me start off by saying that I didn't read The Keatyn Chronicles. There are *lots* of characters, and there's obviously some history there, but I didn't actually know what they were talking about had happened in another series. It's not too bad; the author does a decent job of bringing the reader up to date, but it's a little confusing at times. I started reading this series because the first one was free and the box set of 1-3 was cheap. And while this has been entertaining, it's like one big, long soap opera! And I've invested so much in it now that I'm going to have to see it through. Well played, Ms. Dodd! A lot of it seems over the top (I mean, come on... (seriously don't click the spoiler unless you've read through #5). But in a general sense, Aiden and Keatyn are just too cute. Aiden is kinda too perfect. What guy has no issues with his girlfriend always being in the tabloids with her constant co-star? Sure, I know he knows who she really spends her time with, but that's gotta get to a guy after a while, and Aiden just goes along with his perfect Keatyn life. :-) Still, it's super sweet. And I thought I liked Riley and Ariela, but I've decided he doesn't deserve her. Idiot. Too immature still. Yet I'm sure the author will turn that around a few times before this is all over. I just hope it doesn't spread out too much because honestly, I'm not sure my attention will even span to November when the next book is released. :-/
Oh boy…..things are moving along with Keatyn and Aiden; and Vanessa. Riley, my sweet Riley still is hurting from his split with Ariela. She realizes that she messed things up with Riley all those years ago and is ready to get her life back. Does that include Riley? Read on because you don’t want to miss this! I’m one clicking Power right now since I’m dying to see how this plays out. Ms. Dodd, you really have a special talent for reeling your readers in and not letting them go.
So happy to see more of Keatyn, Riley, Aiden, Dawson, and the others. This story is set 10 years in the future after the Keatyn Chronicles were wrote. We get to see them has grown ups and how things are going for them. Couldn’t put the book down read it in one night. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
I enjoy the chronicles so much, Jillian never fails to keep Me intrigued with all the twist and turns. Its amazing for a reader to find a book she can't put down and gives great depictions that you can visualize the story and characters for yourself.Keatyn truly is a inspiration and is living the worst and best dream life making the most of her circumstances no matter what.
I have to say, it's much harder for me to get through the books that are post-high school. Without putting in too many spoilers, there's not enough Keatyn and Aiden-who we fell in love with in the first place-and too much of Vanessa, Dawson, etc. I'll still read them for the Keatyn and Aiden POVs, and the glamour, of course, but eh...
returned to this series again after so long! i really like the multiple pov's as we get into the other characters lives here versus the main focus of the first 7 books in Keatyn's POV. i feel like each of the characters in The Keatyn Chronicles has the makings of a great storyline and i'm happy that these sequels give them that. i also like how it takes us to the events after the stalking and high school of Keatyn and her friends, where we get to see where they are at now in life. a lot of the story here focuses on Riley and Ariela with the bitterness of their breakup and how they might still be hung up on each other, as well as, Dawson and Vanessa with the flame that's been sparked between the two of them. can't wait to read the next because i am still hung up on how this ended ahhhhhh.
THIS IS ALSO STEAMY AF AND I ENJOYED IT. Dawson and Vanessa doing it was a peak to read about.
This was my favorite so far. Finally moved past the Thriller/Action part of the stalker, and solely just goes through the motions of life with all of the characters. Its interesting to see who they all ended up with and all the heartache, love, drama, etc. I am so intrigued to keep following along with all of the characters, as I feel like I know them personally.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was almost afraid of how these aged teenagers were gonna handle adulthood - especially with the fame attached. They are certainly rocking' it to the tune of jealousy, temper tantrums and broken hands! Can't wait to read the next installment.
I didn’t like the 10 year fast forward at first but by the end of the book I’m loving the grown up version of keatyn chronicles. I like the Easter eggs of their past being revealed throughout the story and can’t wait to see what happens next!
It was great catching up with old friends. Its nice to have everyone's perspective. I am glad they have all moved on to become famous or have a great life. Dawson hasn't but it is getting better. Can't wait to see what happens next.
