If you release the dragon…

Being the First Dragon, a mysterious demi-god who created the dragon race, certainly isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sure, he’s powerful and rules from afar with a kind and gentle heart. But, after centuries of watching his dragon children grow, he’s come to realize that his lonely life is lacking warmth, basic human contact… and love.

Charity Doe is a woman on the run, forced to serve others, and never to gain what she seeks most: security. When fate lands her with a dragon who is immune to her unique abilities, she’s intrigued. After experiencing his human form, she’s thrilled. But when she realizes she can’t fall in love with him or he’ll lose his immortal status, she’s in hell.

If only the entire Otherworld wasn’t in pursuit of Charity.
If only the First Dragon wasn’t so irresistible.
If only she didn’t have to break her heart in order to save his.

…you must deal with the fire.

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

I think Dragon Unbound is the final installment of the combined Dragon Septs series, and that makes me super sad. I just love Katie MacAlister's dragons!

This installment features the First Dragon, that mysterious and haughty demi-god who popped up here and there in previous books. You may recall that he is Baltic's father, but he seems to seek a special relationship with all of our characters. I love that the First Dragon visits all new dragons and welcomes them to world, and it shows a sweet side to his arrogant nature. The First Dragon is somewhat separated from reality, so his trying to understand modern vernacular, amenities and foods was quite humorous. But Katie's dragon books have all been humorous and just a great good time.

Charity Doe was a unique supernatural character. I liked her paired with the First Dragon and thought they fit well together. It was great that he got to be her savior and she kind of brought him back to life, or helped cure his ennui.

This story was super short so there wasn't a lot of character development, but I had fun anyway. I do wish the story had been longer because I just have such a good time with the series. I was listening during a road trip and was tempted to go back and listen to the whole series all over again. If I only had the time!!!

If you enjoy paranormal romance or dragons, I highly recommend Katie's Dragon Septs world. I urge you to read them in order as there is quite a bit of character crossover, and you don't want to miss any of the backstory.

Dragon Unbound is a fun and quick read.

It was so nice to get the First Dragon’s story though I wish it was a full novel instead of a novel, but I still had a lovely time. The story had MacAlister’s trademark humor and likable characters. It was nice to revisit and see all the previous couples from the series and the ladies trying to hook the First Dragon up with a mate. Since it is a novella we don’t get much conflict and everything wraps up nicely and a little too quickly, but still it was a fun read for this fan.

The series should be read in order for the best enjoyment.

Honestly, I "read" (read: listened in audiobook) this because of Tavia Gilbert. She always knocks my socks off with her narration.

The First Dragon voice is very similar to the voice of Mecheres' from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. Yum!

I never really got into the Aisling Grey series from Katie MacAlister

but again, Tavia, so here we are.

I heart dragons and this was a very cute story. I want a dragon! (I've always wanted a dragon, this book just didn't help matters)

I loved it. It gave me nostalgia factors. It warms my reader's heart to read about Aisling again. The main story wasn't bad either. Although, it does give me weird vibes how the septs were pretty subservient to the First Dragon. I know he is a demi god and all but Drake and meek doesn't compute with me.

The story revolves around Charity and the First Dragon. FD has been increasing his meddling with the dragons' lives. He pops in and out without warning and the mates thought it was something to fix. The latest event was the FD talking to Aisling's baby. It's his tradition to greet every dragon when they are born but it was still a surprise to find him with the baby. After talking a while, the mates had it in their head to fix him up with somebody. They got his type, a crafty extrovert, and had a plan to find that person.

Meanwhile, they hired a band to play on their celebration. It was rare to have them all together and thought it would be a good time to celebrate. It just so happens that the band they hired is a band of thieves. Charity, the singer, is a siren. She lulls her audience and the other members take this time to steal them blind. Despite her guilt, she got blackmailed into helping. Unfortunately for the band members, the FD was unaffected by Charity's singing. He caught her and the others.

She was worried that the members would hurt FD so she came to his rescue. Unbeknownst to her, he took care of them already. This act of humanity spoke of her character and they didn't immediately lump her in with the thieves. She was under close watch and under FD's protection. The wyverns were suspicious of her but their mates took her side.

FD and Charity slept together and when he came back, after his meal, she was gone. Despite liking him, she couldn't be with him because she didn't want him losing his divinity. She left and he pursued. They caught up with her. When she ran again, she told him her reasons and he cleared up the misinformation. He told her they would live in the beyond.

The book concluded with Aisling and Drake about to chase each other again. They heard singing in the distance.

A fun, quick read!

I love dragons, and totally picked this book up because of the cover. I wasn't aware this was a part of the same series I love so much, but was pleasantly surprised to see familiar characters. Unfortunately, I learned after I started that this was book four in a series, so now I have to go back. Oops!

I was looking forward to the First Dragon’s story … I was all excited when I first read the blurb for this book. The fact that it is a novella sort of made me sad though, but I don’t think his type of character could make for a full length book easily.
The story was and wasn’t what I would normally expect from MacAlister. A chunk of the book was a sort of lexicon about the dragons and stuff from the series. I thought that there would be more to the story, but it all wrapped up nicely and too quickly for me. I guess I might be spoiled and had too high of an expectation for it, who knows…. It still had MacAlister’s trademark humor and likable characters and was a cute story. I particularly liked how Charity got herself out of being imprisoned. It was a good call since for some reason most guys go all squeamish when a girl talks about “her woman’s time.”
I was expecting more when it came to Charity and her band mates and maybe a bit more conflict. But, if you look at it from the perspective that it is just a wrap up story to give a favorite character of the entire batch of series his HE then it was a cute story. I enjoyed seeing characters from throughout the whole series all together in one spot. I would’ve liked to read more about the First Dragon acclimating himself to the modern world, but I guess since he found his mate he really didn’t have to deal with the inanities of going potty or eating, lol. I normally eat the fish out of water trope up so of course it wasn’t enough for me. It would’ve been nice to hear more about what a siren can and cannot do and where they come from. The romance between the two seemed rushed, but that could be expected from the length and nature of the story. I also would’ve liked to see Andrew and the other band mates get theirs, but I’m just going to think that they will probably cause trouble later on.
Now I want to read the whole series all over again so I can focus on the First Dragon.

This was a very informative and enjoyable book. I got a real look at the First Dragon. He acts as the big bad dragon but he does have a soft side. He is interested in all of the new born babies and seems to be able to communicate with them..
I liked that the story brings all of the main dragon together along with their mates. He even tolerates his son Baltic.
You had to feel for him for his loss of his wife but then enters Charity. She is with a group of people who only want to rob the dragons. She does not agree with them so does what she can to separate herself.
I really loved how she reacted with the first dragon and won his liking to only run away from him and have him give chase and finally get her back. She loves him but after listening to what Jim told her she fears that she would doom him if he fell for her. Spoiler Alert: Jim lied. and at the end she and the First Dragon go off to his world.
sPOILER ALERT!!jIM LIED.

Better than I expected. The h knows what she is, and is trying to hide while singing in a band of crooks who use her abilities to enthrall people for various reasons. They have the brilliant idea of doing this to dragons. How they know these are dragons is not said.

First Dragon finds himself remaining on the mortal plain on a bet or something. The h's attempt works on everyone but him. He finds her fascinating.

Of interest here is a reader's guide of sorts - it's short, basically outlining the septs and their leaders. The blue dragon is still unattached. Guess the series isn't through after all.

Also included is a short on Jim's vacation that wasn't. Poor thing got sent to the Akasha by a vengeful Guardian in training. He made his way out, but didn't get to spend any time with Celia the Corgi.

The First Dragon finds himself in a wager from the wyvern mates that they can find him a mate if he lives as a human. Not even a day goes by before a mysterious siren enters his life.

Short and sweet. This probably isn't the best novella to start with in the series, as it assumes a lot and jumps right in, but for those following the series it's a nice little interlude. There are definitely some unanswered questions and things feel a little too pat, but it keeps the amusing interplay and characters going.

Sorry to see this series end...but there is still the missing blue crazy.. running loose and the current Blue dragon leader has no mate so maybe there are more books to come😉😁

Also quasi zum Verlieben. Und diese Novelle bildet keine Ausnahme. Charitys und Avvals (aka Der Erste Drache) Geschichte entwickelt sich rasant, ist spannend und ... für meinen Geschmack viel zu kurz. Aber lest sie doch einfach selbst!

Short and sweet with a slightly too simple plot. It could've used another twist. But it left me feeling happy, so I don't mind the lack of it that much.

A Must Read for All Dragon Fans! Dragon Unbound (Dragon Falls #4) by Katie MacAlister

In this Dragon Novella, Katie MacAlister takes us into the world of the number one dragon ~ the First Dragon.

When first introduced, the First Dragon almost seemed unattainable, floating just out of reach. As each novel took the Dragon story further, we learned more and more about the First Dragon. Who could forget of the scene of the First Dragon in the 2nd Light Dragon novel in the sex shop with Ysolde and Constantine? (The inflatable goat!) It was then, that the First Dragon began to make me think, ‘this Dragon may have a sense of humor’!

In Dragon Unbound, Katie MacAlister presents the First Dragon, (a demigod), with a tender heart: his caring one-sided conversation with Drake and Aisling’s newest baby. He is vulnerable: he doesn’t understand some of the current vernacular used. He has a sense of humor: “Then your face is leaking.” He is passionate: he leaves a fire trail with his touch. He has a name: Avval.

Charity is a siren. She has been used by unsavory folks and is the process of another ‘gig’ at Green Dragon Wyvern, Drake and his mate, Aisling’s estate. She is lonely and friendless. Yet she is strong. She realizes that she needs to get out of the situation she finds herself, but unsure of how to do so.

Then the story gets interesting; Charity sings and the First Dragon steps in the save his Dragons. What neither expected is an inexplicable yearning and the understanding that the other can fill a void in their hearts.

The Dragon Unbound novella will have fans of the Dragon series catching up with Dragon friends, Baltic and Ysolde, Gabriel and May, Drake and Aisling. But it does not lose focus of the hero/heroine of the story. The First Dragon and Charity’s coming together is unexpected, but perfect. Their story is a treasure, filled with humorous jewels and passionate gems.

Dragon Unbound is a must read for any Katie MacAlister fan of the Dragon series. After completing the novella, I immediately wanted to re-read the whole series just so I could read the novella again!

Dragon Unbound is The First Dragon's story. We start out at Drake & Aisling's house with The First Dragon talking to the newest dragon, baby Ava. Aisling, Ysolde , and May walk in on him and after a bit of conversation decide he needs a girlfriend or maybe a new mate. They, of course, decide they need to find this person for him because they are awesome matchmakers. They convince him to spend a month on the mortal plain and to live as a mortal lives starting that night at Ava's welcome party. Aisling has hired a band, The Unequaled Moles, for the party. What she doesn't know is that the singer, Charity, is a Siren and the band members are thieves. Charity's job is to sing the people at the party into a dancing frenzy while the band members rob the house. The First Dragon discovers what is happening and foils the job. From that point hilarity ensues as per usual whenever you are dealing with the dragons. Avval, The First Dragon, tries to navigate this "modern" world and convince Charity she needs to stay with him while Charity is trying to just get away and not get confined by the L'au-dela for being a Siren which has been outlawed. Definitely a great read! If you read it in public be prepared to be stared at as you laugh out loud through out the entire book!

I love Katie's dragons! This book was very enjoyable and full of lots of characters from her previous dragon books. I’ve always wondered about the First Dragon and I can honestly say he is a yummy dragon. Agreeing to live with and be like his children and mates in the real world had some very funny scenes. Thieves trying to steal from dragons, a siren that sings so no one knows what is going on. I wish the novella could have been a full novel but it is great to see the First Dragon be as happy as his children and their mates, it’s also wonderful to see the interactions with his children and mates and why they are special to him. I hope a second story will come out of this maybe a crossover to the First Dragon realm. It truly is a great read. This is another wonderful book dragon by Katie!!

The much awaited romance of The First Dragon!
Another of Katie Mac's Dragon books; this one about the very first dragon, the father of them all and like the others this one doesn't disappoint. Long time Katie fans had been waiting for the First Dragon's romance and I have to admit I was a little disappointed that this book would be “only a novella” but somehow Katie managed to pack it full even in this short form.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the musings of the first dragon as he tried to assimilate into the modern world, running into a beautiful Siren and discovering that he missed the company of a female. I don't want to add to much more as this is a novella and it is to charming to post spoilers.
This is a great addition to the Dragon Series and if you have enjoyed the others you will love this one.
