London, 1888 He comes out of the darkness and fog and strikes! Soon, the world will learn of Jack the Ripper and his bloody crimes. On the brink of suicide, young Albert Besame meets Arthur Machen, a writer whose tales of terror will one day make him the leader of the ‘Decadent’ literary movement but who also has a strange, unknown connection to Saucy Jack. Albert is unwillingly drawn into the investigation of the murders and crosses paths with Inspector Abbeline, Sir William Withey Gull, Walter Sickert, Richard Mansfield and many others. As Albert and Machen follow the trail of the Ripper through the bowels of Whitechapel and beyond, Albert is haunted by one singular fear; Is Arthur Machen really Jack the Ripper himself? To solve that question, Albert Besame will risk his life and soul as well as his beloved no matter where the investigation takes him even if it is to the very Gates of Hell itself!

What a massive an outstanding book! The author combines the story of Jack the Ripper with the concept of evil of Arthur Machen in an absolute brilliant way. It's an unique mixture of murders and Machen's horrors. Albert Besame tells the story in retrospective from old age. When he's young he's going from Cornwall to London. There he meets Machen and the adventure of his life happens to start. At that time the murders of Jack the Ripper shock the public. Who is this mysterious murderer and is there a connection to Prince Eddy? What about the lost diary Albert recovers? What about Ann, his fiancee and the eerie Mary Kelly? You'll meet many fascinating characters like Walter Sickert (the painter) or Bram Stoker in the novel and the description of Whitechapel with all its locations is excellent (e.g. The Ten Bells pub that still exists). The denouement of the story is as strong as the whole book itself. An incredible roller coaster ride of compelling action. A modern Penny Dreadful at its very best. I was very enthusiastic about the novel and think it's the ultimate book dealing with Jack the Ripper and Arthur Machen. Absolutely recommended!
