Jack Bentley’s life fractured into jagged shards of pain and loneliness four months ago when his wife’s car plunged into the Snake River. Still reeling from the loss of his wife and infant son, Jack finds his world shaken again when he sees the ghost of his wife, Gina. But the truth she tells him changes everything: their son didn't drown with her. Now, Jack must find his son before he slips away forever. Haunted by loss and his wife's plea, Jack finds himself diving into a mystery deeper than the river's swift current. No power on Earth can reunite him with his little boy—and even help from beyond the grave may not be enough to bring Jack's son back.

Oh my heavens!!! I couldn't set this one down. I started reading it and was only going to read a handful of chapters because I had a lot to get done. I had to force myself to set it down and move onto my next task. But I did reward myself. Lol! After completing each task I told myself I could read 2...or 3 chapters as my reward. Then after my day was finished and I was not quite halfway through the book, what did I do??? If you guessed that I stayed up until I finished reading it, then you would be 100% correct!!!
This book has some great suspenseful moments, some calmer moments of just being, moments of self-reflection, moments of healing, moments of love and plenty of moments of surprise! I loved that the author chose to write the book with several POVs scattered throughout. Jack is our hero in this story. The majority of the book is from his perspective which is perfect because it is his story to tell. His grief, his loss, his family, his sorrows, his shock, his surprise and his racing against the clock to find his baby son who was believed to be dead. After his wife's car was hit in an accident, she and the baby plunged into the Snake River and drowned. Except the baby's body was never found. Several little findings at the scene didn't fully add up but there was no possible way that the baby survived.
Several months after the accident, Jack, his young daughter and his wife's best friend, Emily, are all being told by his deceased wife to find Easton. After several dreams/impressions/promptings, Jack is on a race to find his son. Along with Jack's POV, we read the story from Emily's perspective, a Sheriff's perspective, and the perspective of the one who has Easton. I was really impressed with the author's ability to portray so many characters' POV and make the different personalities flow so smoothly. Add to those POVs, several more secondary characters, who give a great depth to the story. The pacing of the story was well done. The beginning feels a little haunting, not in a scary way but in the sense that Jack is barely surviving this tremendous loss of his wife and baby. He's trying to survive but how do you move past such a devastating and sudden loss? Then there are little tidbits revealed, little puzzle pieces that bring enlightenment to the reader and make Jack's impressions from his dead wife seem real. How can he find his son when there is no possible way to know where he went? No witnesses. No one else who would even remotely begin to believe that Easton could have survived. Which ultimately means that Jack is crazy.
Great suspense, some great psychological moments. I had some different guesses as to how it might all pan out but, I was wrong. I never guessed what happened would be the outcome. I couldn't close my eyes until I turned the last page and knew what happened to these characters whom I came to love and cheered for. The loss and healing was great to watch as it occurred differently for the characters. I enjoyed the setting as well since I'm fairly familiar with that area and could picture it in my mind while reading. That's always fun to come across when reading a book.
If you're looking for a great clean suspense novel, enjoy moments of intensity and a little love story thrown in, I highly recommend this book. But be warned, you might be exhausted the next day because you might be like me...staying up late to read it all! You have been warned.
Content: Clean. Talk of drowning, kidnapping, a couple moments of peril. Very mild religious references, Jack thinks about conversations he's had/wants to have with his Pastor about grief and healing. The characters also prayer a few times, the prayers aren't written, we're just told as readers that they are praying for help and guidance, not preachy at all. I think those that aren't big fans of Christian fiction will enjoy this one.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I wrote the first draft of this book nearly ten years ago and the story has haunted me ever since. I kept going back to it in between the other books that were under deadline and I knew that when the time was right, I'd be able to finish it. After several drafts, revising, editing, and rewriting, it was finally ready and I'm able to release the story to you! Who knows, maybe it will haunt you until you turn the last page?
I was not able to put this down for a moment once I started reading. The tension of the story kept me turning page after page with hope and trepidation. I did not know what was going to happen next. I loved these characters. Jack the loving and grieving husband, Haille, Easton and Emily all had a valuable part in this story and each one was written beautifully. Even Janette was written well and authentically. What a great suspense writer!
Jack Bentley not only lost his wife Gina, and their infant son Easton, in a car accident 4 months ago, but Easton's body was never found--just his car seat downstream. Things didn't add up--how did the car seat get out of her car, why was only the top part of the harness buckled together when Gina was very conscientious and always buckled the kids in, even for the short ride to their daughter's preschool--but Easton couldn't have survived the car crash into the Snake River so everyone accepted that Easton had died.
One morning while crossing the bridge where the accident happened, Jack thinks he sees Gina, that night Hallie (their 5 year old daughter) dreams that her mom tells her they need to find Easton, and Gina's best friend, Emily, suddenly starts thinking about how she promised Gina she'd paint a mural in Hallie's bedroom. Jack tries to brush it off as grief, but after he sees a woman with a baby the same age Easton would be, who looks just like Easton, he starts to believe that Gina is communicating with him, Hallie and Emily, and that Easton is alive. Now he has to find him, but the police will think he's crazy if he tells them he found a baby that's the same age as Easton and looks just like him. Jack does what he feels he has to do to get Easton back so he can prove that this woman's baby is really his baby boy.
I found this book so engrossing I didn't want to do anything but read or listen to it. Be ready to an emotional roller coaster. Sure the beginning is sad because Jack's barely getting through each day, plus he's starting back to work, but when Emily comes over to paint Hallie's room things get a little lighter in tone, and when he thinks he sees Easton and finally believes Gina's communicating with him (although he doesn't understand how) things start moving and it gets exciting. Just when I think this poor family's going to have their happy ending it takes a sudden turn and I'm surprised I didn't scream "NO!" while reading. Just when I didn't think I could take anymore things turn around for our hero, and I got the ending that I'd wanted for him since the first few chapters.
Rachelle J. Christensen knows how to write suspenseful stories. You may not want to start reading this one at night because you might end up reading super late to see how it's going to end. I originally read this story two years ago when it was titled River Whispers, but I found it just as exciting this time around.
I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.
Can you imagine finding out months later that your young son really didn't die in the car accident that claimed your wife? That's what happened to Jack and the way he found out was unbelievable to some.
I was completely caught up in this story and did not want to put it down. Between the mystery that is growing daily and the suspense that had me on edge, I flew through the book, even setting aside another one that I was reading.
Jack isn't a complicated character. In fact, he's pretty average, but he won't stop at anything to find his son and exhibits a lot of perseverance, creativity, and love. These characteristics really rooted him into my heart and had me cheering him on. I also enjoyed the romance that blossomed in the midst of this crisis.
This book had a feeling about it that something like this could really happen and the writing powerfully displayed this possible reality.
Content: mild romance; mild violence and moments of peril
The last few books I've read by Rachelle Christensen were romance and although the first couple of ebooks I bought 5 years ago when I got a Kindle ereader were by her, I kind of forgot she does romantic suspense really well. Well this book certainly reminded me--WOW, I didn't want to stop reading this book--I was up until 2 a.m. trying to find out how it ended. I ended up falling asleep with just a couple of chapters left, but the first thing I did when I woke up was finish reading this book.

If you like romantic suspense this is the book for you, but you might want to make sure you don't have anything else to do, because you're not going to want to stop reading. This is a clean romance. I received a copy from the author but it did not influence my review.
I first got to read River Whispers last year as a beta reader. It always makes me happy to get to re-read something that I loved the first time I read it. I pulled this one out of my to be read pile one day last week.
One thing I really like about this one is the setting. I grew up living near the Snake River in Blackfoot, Idaho where the story is set. A lot of the settings are familiar to me. I could picture where the story took place. And I love that!
Rachelle Christensen is one of my favorite authors. I love her character and her plots. She just does an amazing job. Each of her books keeps me interested and turning page after page. I actually read this whole book in an afternoon.
Jack is such a great guy. The reader can sense his anguish over losing his wife Gina and son Easton. And it only gets more intense as his wife starts trying to communicate with him to let him know that their son is still alive. I loved this aspect of the story! One thing I believe is that the people we love that have died are able to help us when we need it, much like Gina does in the story.
Then there’s Emily. She was one of Gina’s best friends. So she and Jack share their grief over her death. I liked that she was also able to receive messages from Gina and she was in a position to help Jack. She goes along with some of his ideas, even when they seem a bit crazy.
The plot of this one was so great! I didn’t want to stop reading it, even though I had read it before. It’s so suspenseful. This one kept me interested until I read the very last word!
Woot! Woot! This has everything you could want in a good book! Mystery, romance, action, detective work, suspense, ghosts, children, you name it! Jason Edwards doesn't play much of a part in the story, but Jack Bentley and friends manage just fine without him. And my heart stopped at the same time theirs did, in the middle of the action! I don't want to give the plot away but do encourage you to read it! I finished in one day because I couldn't put it down!

Romance, suspense, clean, PG, but mainly for the violence and tension. This was a fun read! More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but the intrigue and suspense were very well done. I enjoyed this, and definitely think this is one of this author's better suspense books. She has several other mysteries/suspense books, and this one, had a bit more depth to the characters and the plot a bit more complex that made it a better read for me as a reader. This had lots of different elements, the supernatural was interesting to me, and made it a bit different too. Loved seeing the ending (won't spoil it for those who haven't read), but it was interesting to see how all the factors combined to make this come together and come full circle. I love a HEA, and while this was still tragic, it was a great read. I really liked and enjoyed this well enough to round up. I received a copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is the third book in The Jason Edwards FBI Chronicle Series: Dangerous Secrets Suspense. This is a continuation of Jack Bentley's story and it just gets more intense. After losing his wife and son from an accident, he is visited by his wife's ghost. She tells him that their son did not drown with her when the car plunged into the river. This story chronicles his emotional search for his son. The story is very intense and emotional. Full of twists, danger and overflowing with heartbreak. Although this book is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. But I would recommend reading the other two books because they are great. Rachelle is a very talented author and this story adds additional proof. Well written with strong characters and an engaging story. I read an arc and voluntarily chose to review.
Jack Bentley is grieving the drowning of his wife Gina and son Easton four months earlier. When he has to cross the bridge where his wife's car was hit and went off the road, he sees his wife. Although he thinks he's going crazy, that encounter, as well as other memories and feeling that seem forced upon him by Gina, combined with messages his daughter Hallie delivers from her deceased mother, make Jack realize he has to start listening to what Gina's telling him--that Easton didn't die in the accident and he needs to find him. When Gina's friend Emily tells Jack she's been receiving similar impressions, Jack starts his search to find his son.
This was a gripping story--I couldn't wait to see how things played out. There were some pretty intense scenes as Jack tried to find Easton. There was also a sweet romance on the side. I loved the fact that this was a clean read as well--I don't read much suspense because they're usually not clean reads, so this was an enjoyable book for me.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
On the strength of my liking other books I have read by this author, I grabbed this one (aka downloaded this one) without reading any summary blurb about it. I expected a romantic suspense novel. It was action packed but not really suspenseful. It had a dash of romance, I guess, but it was a side item. So strike one was that this was not what I expected (my bad entirely). Second strike is that I don’t like books that have the POV of the “bad guys” in it. This was not entirely from that POV, thankfully, but I don’t like it to be in books I read at all. Third strike, I don’t like to read books about children being in harm’s way. Fourth strike, I don’t really like ghost stories. Ssoo.... this receives a 3-star rating which means I liked the book, generally speaking, but I could not recommend this to a friend. I can not recommend this because of all my personal prejudices as mentioned above. If my little peeves aren’t your little peeves, then you might like this book.
I found this book one that tugs on heartstrings from start to end. Jack and Gina were happily married with a dear little girl Haille and a cute chubby boy Easton. Emily is Gina's best friend since school days and Helen is Gina's mum, a loving grandma. These are all people I came to like who are all important to the story. Of course there is a story to be told and a sad one that unfolds and had me holding my breath at times, screaming "No, no" at others or "Hurry up!" at other times. Gina is killed in a car accident and that is only the beginning. It is a great story that makes you wonder 'why not?' as Haille's faith in her mother leads her to beg her father Jack to find Easton, sure he can do so cos Mummy said so. I actually cried at times but not once did I put this book down unless I actually had to do something else. Rachelle Christensen tells a great story that reels you in until the very end. Please dont miss this one.
Jack Bentley “carries the silence, the absence of Gina with him everywhere he goes.” Gina’s presence lingers around those she loved, haunting them. “He was living some twisted ghost story…” As a guardian angel, Gina isn’t creepy but realistic and believable. Adorable Hallie is the “one thing that keeps the seams of his life from splitting wide open.” Friend and artist, Emily Gray brings the gift of light and laughter to the Bentleys. Her selfless love opens hearts. As time goes on, she finds her voice and her sass. Heart stopping drama along with flashbacks, intrigue, mystery, and danger fill the pages of this book. I enjoyed the characters, the pace, and the hope for a new path back to love. Unbelievable incidents told succinctly allow the reader to believe. * I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are uniquely my own.
Wow, talk about an emotional book. I found it hard to put down. Jack has been grieving the loss of his wife and four month old son, Easton. They drowned when her car plunged into the Snake river. Easton's body was never recovered but they found his car seat floating in the water so it was assumed he was dead. Later he wife starts communicating with him and their five year old daughter. She tells them to find Easton. When a woman is seen strolling a baby that looks like Easton, Jack begins to wonder if that is his son. Gripping and heartbreaking at times. No spoiler here, but this book is a great read and one you will enjoy. So many twists and surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
I liked the suspense and I liked the glimpse into the kidnapper's head. I did not like that the love thing happened so fast. I think it should have waited until after the whole debacle was finished and, even then, it should only have been the beginnings or idea of a romance. I also thought it was a little far-fetched that he found his kid fairly immediately (and by chance) after he decided to start looking.
River Whispers is a clean romantic suspense. Time holds no value to love and loss. So after losing his family, Jack struggles with it for a long time. But when he sees the ghost of his dead wife, his world is turned upside down. Now it's a race against time to find his son. But will anyone believe him? Where is he? This one is a page-turner. You cannot stop reading because you have to know what happens. This book is an edge-of-your-seat must-read!!
I read the entire book in about 3 hours, it is that good, I couldn't put it down! The characters are amazing, you automatically feel for them, fall in love with some of them and yes there are even some you just want to slap silly or maybe even want and hope bad things come to them! You will not be disappointed, you need to grab this book and follow Jack, Em, Helen, Sheriff Vincent, Janette, Daniko, and the loveable Hallie and Easton!
Jack's wife died four months ago and he is trying to piece is life back togethe with his young daughter Hallie. When he starts to see his wife, in certain places, she is trying to tell him something but it is hard for him to understand. When his wife's college roommate Emily, also has had dreams and offers to paint Hallie's room, something that had been plan before Jack's wife passed away. This story caught me from the beginning and I had a hard time putting it down.
This book was amazing. The whole premise of losing not only your wife but your new baby too. It would be so devastating. So glad that Jack and Emily and the courage to look into things. It would have been hard for both of them but things happen for a reason. This is definitely a must read. People can be terrible sometimes. It's scary to think how people's minds function.
This is one intense book. I was on the edge of my seat the whole entire book. It wasn't exactly a comfortable read for me because I am a mother and this is every parent's worst nightmare. If you love mysteries and books that has you chewing your fingernails wondering what will happen next then this is the book for you.
This was such a good book. Grabbed me from the first page and couldn't put it down. Read it in a few hours. The suspense was gripping. I also liked this because it's a clean book to read with no profanity, no sex, and only a little violence toward the end, and even that was clean and not graphic like some books are.
River Whispers is a pretty good read. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense to the story. I did not want to put the book down until the end. A good, quick and clean romantic suspense. 4 1/2 stars. I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
This is very well written, has small chapters, great flow, well developed characters that feel real, invokes intense emotions, drew me in and kept my interest. I wanted to read another one of her books immediately. Couldn't put it down, read it in a day.
I won a copy through a giveaway, but this is my fair and honest review.
This started out great, so I downloaded it. I've enjoyed many other books by the same author. But, I didn't know it was going to be a supernatural story. And I didn't find closure about who the hit and run driver was. I mean, someone would have had serious front end damage on their car, though drivable enough to flee the scene. The suspense was good, as Jack desperately tried to get his son back.
I choose this book because the author has the same name as my daughter. I know strange reason but I have to say it was such a great book. I started it and then got hooked. In the end, I just gave up and sat down to finish it. Rachelle does a wonderful job of creating a story that is believable and so intense that you will have a hard time getting anything done until you finish.
Wow what a story. Sadness for Jack when his wife and infant son drown. Life is impossible for him, but then the ghost of his wife tells him their son didn’t drown. Now he has to find him. Just loved this amazing story. Received an ARC.
This book pulled me in before I was through the first chapter and didn't let up! It was completely my kind of book, and I highly recommend it! Nothing disgusting or offensive in it, so it's good reading for the whole family!
