An unlikely team with one goal… Grace was fast. Grace was tough. Grace could fight with a knife or a gun. She had gear and she had a plan. After a terror attack led to collapse and chaos she escaped her college town with one get back to her family, even if she had to kill to do it. Tom was a physically-challenged veteran using a tracked wheelchair outfitted with gun mounts. He was no stranger to pain, bad news, and hard times. Together, the two must brave their way across a hostile, dystopian landscape to find Grace’s family. In the highly-anticipated sequel to Locker Nine, Franklin Horton takes us on a violent post-apocalyptic thrill ride packed with vivid, memorable characters.
Franklin Horton lives and writes in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He attended Virginia Intermont College and Virginia Commonwealth University. In his spare time he pursues outdoor adventures with his wife and two children. His interests include camping, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, and shooting.
*3.75* This one picks up right where Locker Nine left off, (which I really liked). Grace is as fierce and determined as ever, and teaming up with Tom (a disabled vet with a tracked wheelchair armed to the teeth) made for a great duo.
I enjoyed seeing characters from Horton’s other series, Mick (The Mad Mick) and Peet (Jim’s son from The Borrowed World) both make appearances.
Post Apocalyptic America Strong, capable FMC Veteran MMC Multi POVs Moral ambiguity Found family Not a romance
The largest downside was there were a lot of different storylines happening at once. It pulled the focus away from Grace and Tom, and I found myself wanting to get back to their main story. Still, the pacing never dragged, and the tension stayed high throughout.
This is a exciting, tension-filled continuation of the story from book 1. The characters are well written and I especially like Grace who is a young woman prepared for dangerous situations. And, those situations abound in this episode. I’m looking forward to book 3 and hope you enjoy the as much as I am.
I listened all night long, I could not put it down...and I can not wait for book 3!!! This was FANTASTIC!!! What a great series!! This one was a true fight for survival...The Bravery of these women was just mind blowing..I was scared to death for these characters almost the whole book...and I LOVED IT!! I need book 3 ASAP!! GIVE IT TO ME FRANKLIN HORTON!! WRITE FASTER!!! LOL I dont know what it is about Kevin Pierce narrations...but that man just keeps me listening, and Him and Horton are a dream team!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
GREAT A SECOND TIME...YES SO SOON, DONT JUDGE ME!! lol
I have thoroughly enjoyed this story with characters you come to love or hate. Drama and terror keep you involved from start to finish. Nice and clean deserving of being seen on the big screen. Well done 😀
Good continuation of the story. While I enjoy following Grace’s character, among others, I still like The Borrowed World better overall. Perhaps I relate to Jim a bit more. That said, as a dad of a daughter myself, I appreciate the connection between Grace and her father. (I can only imagine how he feels about what she's going through.) It's enjoyable to read both series as they fit into a similar mold. At the end of this book, we even come in contact with two characters from The Borrowed World (though very briefly), and spend a decent amount of time with the character known as The Mad Mick (who has a series of his own, which I have yet to read).
The story is decent enough, the problem is a man is writing the book with the main character being a female. It doesn't come across as authentic at all. Although the writer obviously is trying to write strong female leads it always falls short. At one point two women shot 11 bullets between them at a enemy not far off, only one bullet even grazed the guy. These are suppose to be women who have trained often to use many different types of guns. Also these strong women always still need a man to help them solve their problems. Twice in the story a man arrived "just in the nick of time" to defend the females. Another inauthentic character are the children, one scene they're using terms like "mommy" and can't manage to feed themselves cereal as if they're 4, the next scene they're using words, descriptions, and deceptions as if they're 10.
I have cursed Frank!in Horton on a few occasions. Not on this one though. The way you intertwined three of my favorite series into this without losing the storyline of this series is nothing less than genius. If you read this before any of the other series you will certainly feel compelled to read The Borrowed World as well as The Mad Mick series. Bravo brother. Gonna dig into the next one immediately.
This is another excellent entry in the series by this author. I enjoy all of his books, because I've always loved survival and people that do cool things like building safe rooms or secret tunnels. These books are chock full of those kinds of things. Simple things like using motion sensing driveway alerts to let you know when people come onto your property or using motion lights installed at set distances to range targets at night.
The best thing about this series is it's realism. It's not an alien invasion or government conspiracy that takes down the nation and causes all the mayhem, it's when entitled Americans who didn't prepare for even the slightest disruption are deprived and get pissed off when someone who did prepare doesn't hand over half their supplies.
These books definitely lean to the prepper way of view, but come on, you're reading survivalist novels, what did you expect. The preppers come out looking good and the ones who aren't realistic look stupid and are often killed because of it. Even people who try to adopt the right mindset still have ingrained reactions that cause trouble for them or others, because they don't realize the ramifications that their minor actions will have. For instance, suppose you share a little of your food with a hungry person. That's compassion, but when they start starving again, they figure that if you have some food, you must have more and in desperation, they could hurt or kill you. Even if you don't have food, they might believe you're lying to keep it all to yourself.
These are really well written, though, and I think they can help improve the mindset of all of us. Even if you're a person who doesn't like the gun aspect, which I personally think is awesome since I'm an enthusiast, you should understand by reading them how much difference a little preparedness can make to your situation. Maybe the country won't be taken down by terrorists, but look at the situations we have already gone through. Hurricane Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, the California wildfires. If you have some supplies you'll be better off to survive till help comes, or you'll have the mindset to leave early, or you'll have bags with essentials packed so you can bugout(aka leave to go to a safer location). Even if reading these only causes you to throw a couple of bottles of water and a blanket in your trunk in the winter, you'll be glad you did and it'll be well worth it.
This particular book expands on the series in a cool way. The 'Borrowed World' books follow two sets of characters for the most part. You have the ones trying to get home and the ones still at home trying to hold things down. With 'Locker Nine' you get a different perspective. Instead of a large male, you get two small females trying to make their way through hostile territory and one of them hasn't ever trained or even thought about how to act in this kind of situation, making her a liability. While I totally agree that females can be as bad ass as males, this throws an entirely different perspective on it, because people she'd run into probably saw a small girl and thought she was a softer target than a male.
This book gives you several different perspectives to look at things from. You don't have many non-preppers, but you have regular preppers, ones who've got compounds (as introduced in 'Locker Nine'), you've also got special govt operators. It's a cool book and I was so engaged that I read it all in one day, like I've done with all the others. I really suggest people read this entire series, because like I said, even if it causes you to prepare a little you'll be better off. Something as simple as a thermal blanket in the winter and a little water could help prevent your death from cold or loss of a limb from frost bite. If nothing else, it'll make you more comfortable till help arrives.
The Mick! Surprise visitor(s)! Old & new friends! Dubious dirtbags galore! ……
Fabulous getting to visit with old friends here in Book 2 of The Locker Nine Series! THE marvelous marauding maniacal MICK! And long suffering daughter Barb. Lol! As well as another surprise visit (with whom(s) I shall not ruin for you! ;) - just a mere passing- still wonderful! Perhaps you’re friends with some/all as well? I guess it depends on which order you’ve read Horton’s stories. If at all yet?……. A TIP: If, for some crazy reason, you have not yet read The Mad Mick series. Oh…. You MUST read that next! (Or even stop here. Go read that. Come back here. Start Locker Nine over again! Lol) The Mick series is — just. that. phenomenal. … The Borrowed World story is *almost* as good. It’s still top of the line, cream of the crop apocalyptic reading, as ALL Horton’s work is- but NOTHING can be fairly compared/contrasted to the Mick series. It’s in a category all on its own! Something like: “Greatest Apocalyptic Series of All Time.” Yeah. Only a TINY few would fall under that umbrella of dystopian greatness, & Horton’s The Mad Mick books would be 1 of the very select few. So, The Borrowed World —- FANTASTIC. Must also be added to your, “Read Next” List. So… as I’d hoped following the conclusion of Book 1, the pace & intensity did in fact pick up once the second chapter of Locker Nine began with Grace Under Fire. It is an engaging story, chock full of wonderful characters old & new, as well as dubious & deplorable critters scraped from the bottom of the heel of human society. (To include a Congressman.) I just adore the relationship between Grace & Tom; their mutual awkwardness, & Horton’s ability to keep in mind this isn’t a “romance novel” in any form. It’s just perfect. What also makes it so great is Tom’s humility as well. He’s got a balanced ego - he never forces his will on Grace. An example of this is where, due to Tom’s mobility issues (cannot walk/differently-abled vet), he can only travel so far each day. The battery life of his all terrain upright mobile device determines this. Tom concedes it’s best for Grace & the mission for her to go forward without him, & he’ll catch up when he can once his upright charges. He worries for her, but trusts her abilities & skills. Now that’s a Real Man right there! ;) Rather than throwing a fit, or any of his own perception of weight around & asking, guilting, or demanding (ha! just picturing Grace’s reaction to “commands”) that she wait for him …. whilst her family is potentially in danger. Now, in any case, that just wouldn’t jive with Tom’s characterized personality- at all. Nor work with Grace’s, in her characterization within this storyline. Overall, this second chapter of our journey was better than the first. A lot more … “Horton-like” in tempo, humor, action, pacing, adrenaline, surprises, uncomfortable moments, & more. I’m excited to see what the master world builder & wordsmith has in store for us all in Book 3! ……
Grace Hardwick has managed to travel from her college campus in Oxford, Mississippi to Arthur Bridges’ compound in the mountains of north Georgia. She fled towards home with the supplies and equipment her father had cached for her in a storage facility near the campus. After the coordinated terrorists’ attacks throughout the country, it was imperative that Grace gets home as soon as possible. Her trip has been anything easy and her survival skills have been put to the test more often than not. Along the way, she has teamed up with Tom Brady and his mother, Sonyea. Her father, Robert, has traveled to the compound and plans to help her along with Tom and Sonyea back to their homestead outside of Damascus, Virginia.
When the group decides to split up and send Grace and Tom ahead all hell breaks loose. The Hardwick farm though somewhat isolated has some unexpected unsavory guests wreak havoc on the others in Grace’s family. The Bridges’ compound comes under attack causing a delay in Robert and Sonyea leaving. Grace and Tom run into a ragtag group of stranded hikers that open fire. It seems that fate is keeping everyone apart and their lives in peril.
Horton’s second novel in The Locker Nine Series, Grace Under Fire, is a fast-paced, action-packed, post-apocalyptic dystopian. (Say that three times as fast as you can. LOL) Each of the places is described in enough detail that it is easy to picture them. There are more moving parts to this book than the first and many more characters. It almost became too many to keep up with at times. The budding romance between Grace and Tom adds a sweet relief to all the tragedy happening around them.
This book grabbed my attention right away and kept me tied to the story. I hated to put it down and it ended too soon. I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
This is the continued story of a young girl who is struggling to get home after a devastating attack on the US. This book also starts to focus on her Prepper Father as he is trying to meet up with her. Once they get together they soon have to split back up and the adventure starts again. The father is pinned down and under attack the daughter is in her home town but still cant make it home.......what will become of them?? Will they ever find peace????? Another scary amazing book by Horton. I feel Horton goes above and beyond anything that you could hope for when researching his books. I imagine the father in this book as Horton himself. He attends prepper camps, and networks with others as the dad does in this story. That being said the attack portrayed in this book is scary plausible. Even more so I think Horton nails how the society will start to collapse after the attack. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in prepping, survival or just likes a good social collapse read. If you liked this book and Locker Nine the prequel you would also love the Borrowed World series which takes place in the same world. This book got an easy five stars from me!
Locker Nine is a book that has stuck in my memory. Excellent prepper/survivalist book! Grace under fire is just as good! In book one, Grace is trying to make her way home after a terrorist attack in the country. Luckily her dad is a well connected man. He was an author of prepper and survivalist books. Robert (her father) had a plan in place for his daughter just in case of an emergency. He stashed away a vehicle and supplies in a storage facility near Grace's college to help her get home. He even had a network of friends along the way to help her if help was needed. Grace finds help and friends at the farm. Book 2 picks up with Grace and her new friend Tom, a disabled veteran. They finally make it back to her home town with the help of more of her father's connections. When they reach her home she has a new set of problems to deal with. Her family was in danger! It's up to her, Tom, and yet another of Robert's connections to help take back her home.
Excellent book and great narration by Kevin Pierce. I honestly couldn't imagine anyone else doing this series! Can't wait for book 3!
I didn't think I could like this series anymore, but here I am... enjoying the second book more than the first!
The setup from the first book introduces a new POV, as Grace's father heads off to find his daughter. It runs almost concurrently with Grace's storyline in the first book toward the end when her father finds her. This maintains an action-packed storyline where Grace can take a breather as she plans the next steps to make it home to her mother. It's great that the storylines keep overlapping so one fits perfectly into the next like a puzzle piece.
In today's world it seems we have to made woman into men and it doesnt .In this story as in others we fine a woman who demands (the mother) who is hurt knows her injury will slow others down but insists on going instead of protecting the child and homestead. In this case in is only injured but in most he dies. If we learn anything about all these stories, women will get men killed so if we learn anything its don't listen to your women unless you want to be a fond memory of you saving her from her stupidity. Few woman have the killer instinct to survive they dont have the DNA for it plus they are to pampered so the man steps up and dies. Other wise a good book also in the juvenile section. Author give good advice about certain products and arms just Google them.
Grace Under Fire, book 2 in the Locker 9 series, continues the saga of the Holloway family and their struggles to survive and reunite. The book also introduces The Mad Mick to the series. Grace and Tom hitch a ride to near the homestead but all does not go to plan. In addition, Robert is trapped at a friend's fortified compound with a former congressman and his men, who have plans to seize it. Plenty of surprises I won't spoil exist too. The writing is taut, clear and intense. The fights are perfectly choreographed, the plot and pace are perfect. This is another stellar book, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Horton. 5/5 stars, highly recommended for fans of survival thrillers and apocalyptic fiction, as well as any adults who enjoy excellent thrillers, no-one will be disappointed!
I love prepper books. I like all the preparation involved, all the unique way of doing things, and some people prepare their children for the worst case scenario. Grace is one of those children. Physically prepared, weapon knowledge, and emotionally prepared. The apocalypse is here .Grace is finally secure with her father after a harrowing experience returning from school. Now she wants to go home. But is home the same? Are there problems to share? Lots of action, some new characters, friend and foe...and always the dregs of society who live thru this to flourish at someone else's expense.. Really an enjoyable read...would recommend to everyone & hope there's another book on the way...😁
Grace and her father are briefly reunited. She goes home to help her mom and finds out that danger has come to their home. Grace and her mom defend as best they can, but extra help.is needed and does turn up. The Mad Mick is enlisted to help them. A new character with a great back story. Meanwhile Robert and Tom's mom are unable to leave Arthur's compound, a sneaky congressman wants it. At present it is a standoff. It seems like more is to come. The apocalyptic world the United States has become is far from returning to its prior society. It may never get the chance with lawlessness and fear. The story was good but leaves alot of unanswered questions. The action and characters are good. I would recommend this book.
OK. Horton has almost made up for Book 1 in this series. In Grace Under Fire, we find Grace and Tom heading back to her home. Little do they know that Paul and Debbie have taken it over, with Grace's mother, brother, and family friend's grandson hiding in their safe room in the basement. This is the book where we first truly meet the Mad Mick, doing a favour for Arthur by heading to Damascus to check on Grace and family. It's a good thing he shows up, because while Grace is good, Mad Mick is better! I liked the challenges shown Tom, who relies on batteries for his wheelchair. Towards the end, we even run into some familiar characters from the Borrowed World series. Now, what are Robert and Sonyea up to? And when will they make it back to Damascus?
Entertaining story of survival from different perspectives (preppers, the unprepared, the listless/criminal, etc.). I can tell Horton has a special distaste for opportunistic bullies, child abusers and or negligent parents, and drug addicts - as do I - as they tend to be the primary antagonists/villains in his books. This one starts off where the first one left off and the book has an open ending allowing for several other future additions. I'll be interested to see what direction this series goes.
Do yourself a favor and read all of Horton , I have been entranced with his body of work and find myself unable to stop . From the Mad Mick, Borrowed World, and Locker Nine series ,I found myself reading all night from one book to the next. His stories are moving , gritty, and realistic. Full of good suggestions. In all of the books I have ever read, I have never been so pulled into a well written and mesmerizing plot line. Wow! The characters all intertwined. What a binge worthy journey. Thanks for writing this saga!
I had read the Borrowed World and Mad Mick series before I read this one. There is a book in those that are a crossover and they mention something that happened earlier that I did not remember. Its because it happened in this book. So if you are thinking of reading his books read these first. You will meet characters from the other two series in these books first. They are all three fantastic series. I have really enjoyed them and I am concerned that I am two books away from having read them all!
This is the second book in the Locker Nine series. I was eagerly awaiting this book as I absolutely loved the first one.
In this installment we see Grace re-united with her father Robert at a survivalist ranch only to have to return home without him. When Grace makes it home she is, as the book title says, "under fire".
The book ends with a nice setup for a third book focusing on Robert fighting for survival at the ranch as it comes under siege.
Another well-written, engrossing book of post-collapse survival fiction from the author of the equally excellent "Borrowed World" series, Franklin Horton.
The "Locker Nine" series focuses on protagonist Grace, a college student trying to make it back home to her family after terrorists launch crippling attacks across the United States, destroying the power grid and knocking the country back to pre-industrial times.
I love the way you flesh out your characters. Plot is great and suspense makes me keep reading well past bedtime. A suggestion: Some series would greatly benefit from a synopsis of characters and past events at the beginning of a new instalment. I read so many series that it would help a lot. Like a tv show that starts with "On lasts weeks episode..." . I read a lot faster than you can write after all!
Grace has had to grow up quick. Her world as she knows it is gone. Her father an outdoorsman and prepper has taught her well. She needs to get home. Her world is in chaos. A terrorist attack has completely shut down everything. Food, water electricity..... This is a non-stop action packed exciting read. A character from this authors other books Conor, the mad Mick also appears. Another excellent read in this series!!! Enjoyed immensely!!!
Grace Under Fire: Book Two in The Locker Nine series. This should definitely be read in order.
I'm really enjoying this great series. It's a unique presentation of the events which could lead to SHTF scenarios. I love the family involvement and the connected community of supporters spread out across our great nation.
I love the characters. AWESOME!
I would recommend this book. You can't go wrong with anything written by Mr. Horton.
I think the characters are what I like best about this story. It is suspenseful, but much of that suspense seems contrived. Nevertheless, it's good to follow what happens to these characters.
Kevin Pierce delivers his customary outstanding performance.
NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I have read every single one of Franklin Horton's books and they are consistent in their excellence. The stories are always gripping, the characters are always believable, even the bad guys are not cartoon character bad guys, they are frighteningly real. Read the books, I promise you'll enjoy them.
characters and storyline are interesting. In this book of the series he introduces more characters some with good intentions and some with evil on their minds.
I enjoyed the following Grace as she traveled from small college town in Mississippi to her home in Virginia after a terror attack on U.S. soil.
