Major events from part 1 are skillfully interwoven into the first chapter so that students can get a taste of the drama, and prepare for even a bigger showdown. This novel is written almost entirely in the present tense. The tale of a young boy with a major crush is the perfect novel for reviewing school vocabulary, classes, relationships, and a wide range of present tense structures in the target language. Your students will connect immediately with the authentic and witty expressions, snarky teachers, and of course, “el amor.” is having a bad day, and it's about to get worse. He leaves Spanish class utterly embarrassed. He had no idea that the teacher was going to partner him up with Jessica, the girl he actually writes about in his class essay. Adding insult to injury, the teacher reads his essay in front of the class, even the mean-spirited things he wrote about his teacher. After running into a few more problems in math class (and his crazy math teacher!), he is faced with the big showdown in the lunchroom. Now, Carlos is between *"la espada y la pared.” He has to make serious decisions. However, a short story in Spanish class may hold the key to all of his problems, and may ultimately lead to his biggest confession of all. Find out in the second installment of the series. This book was very good! In the beginning it was very hard to understand some words in the beginning and the glossary was all out of whack, I ended up having to get help from the teacher. Towards the end though, I understood the context and what was going on. Very good story line that kept me engaged. I also didn’t read the first one, but was able to understand everything that was going on. I recommend.

Read out loud with classes. Was too repetitive on the storyline for 3s, but the 2s loved it
