When Jaka was three years old, sitting in his grandfather's lap, he wanted to do what his grandpa was doing. So, he learned to read. Starting with obituaries.
Reading soon led to writing. At an early age, Jaka realized he was better at writing than talking. Even today, he doesn't like small talk. But his characters do, and they're pretty good at it. Jaka believes that this is one of life's ironies.
His favorite part of the year is summer, his favorite fruit is strawberries, and his favorite book is Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. Probably because after four decades of living in his current body, he's still waiting for his childhood to end. He wouldn't mind if it never does.
Currently, he lives with his family in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Who wouldn’t want to know what’s going to happen tomorrow? Who would? That’s what’s happening to detective Kopitar: his diary entries sum up the next day’s events, so he’s well aware of what will happen tomorrow. However, that does not help the reader to know what will happen.
720 Heartbeats is a fast-paced “cyber-noir” full of suspense, that makes two turns in the end and surprises the reader. the novel is a page-turner and each page is begging to get turned. I could easily live without some of the dialogs which don’t contribute much to the story, although on the other hand, they probably do create the atmosphere and give characters the personality. All in all, the novel is smoothly written and I look forward to Jaka’s upcoming titles.
V glavnem. Super!
Before I start my review, I would like to ask one question from all of you. What would you do if your future self started to tell you about what I going to happen to you in the coming days??? It sounds pretty creepy doesn't it? This is one of those very rare books that really got me carried away and wanted to finish it off, just to see what would be the story. Well, I was totally impressed. It was a book that gave me a wow!!! feeling. We meet the male protagonist of the story, Rok Kopitar, a detective who is investigating on a drug trafficking case. He lives in an apartment with his partner Sara, which he finds totally impressive. His life goes on as it is, of an average guy, until one day. He finds a finds his stolen laptop back in his house. In it he finds a mysterious file, that allows him to read about his future. That puts his whole life in turmoil. There are some important and impressive aspects that I found in this wonderful story; The setting - I just loved the Central European setting, the detective head quarters. It mad me imagine about a busy detective office, tables filled with documents, bulletin boards with maps and photographs, the aroma of coffee etc. The Characters - Rok Kopitar, is a kind-hearted, hard-working person, and I love the way he considers and worries about his partner and best friend, Boris. He is a man of knowledge and finds it important. His partner, Sara, I think is a woman who every man would ever wish for. She is loving, kind and well understanding person, which I think makes their relationship to flourish. The story was incredible. The whole idea of this story is extraordinary. The true ability of the author, makes the reader devoted to the story. (The way I was). You really want to know, what will happen next and it keeps you glued to the book, till the end. Such an interesting and quick read, that makes me recommend this book to the whole blogosphere.
Nič čudnega, saj jih piše kar on sam. Ampak v prihodnosti. On sam, morda ljubljena oseba ali kdo tretji?
In Tomc’s 720 Heartbeats, we follow Slovenian police detective, Rok, through a thrilling mystery as his best friend and partner, Boris gets shot. Boris survives but his wife who’s also shot, doesn’t. A tragic and unexplainable event in and of itself, but the weirdest part is that Rok already knew it would happen. It was written down as a diary entry on his laptop, one Rok of course ignored, not only because of the insane, unbelievable event that was detailed there, but because it was written a day into the future.
It’s hard to describe this book. It’s a thriller, a mystery, a supernatural-something, but at the same time it’s deeply philosophical. Tomc’s writing makes you wrap your head around a lot of big subjects, making you think about life, the world, and a lot of things. In addition to Tomc’s great writing, the book is not too long, very well paced, and overall just a joy to read.
I love books who can lead me on, make me try to figure out what’s going on, but all the while have me stumble just a few steps behind. This one does that. It drags you in and keeps you coming, always setting the pace just high enough for you to not fall off.
Wow what an amazing book. I loved every second of it. I really couldn't put it down. Jaka hands down. You did a wonderfull job here. The story is original and interesting. It hooked me right in. What would you do if you could change your future? I have no fucking clue. Zero. I really don't know if I would even want to know. Probably if something bad happened I would want to change it. But would it be for the best? They say that everything happens for a reason. Is it true? Who knows.. So I would like to think that the ending is wide open to our imagination, but I am afraid it is not. And I just wanted to say that I loved it, that everything is happening in Ljubljana. It is so rare to read the story that is situated in your home town and that is why I loved it even more. You really have to read this book!!
Thrilling book that forces you to sit on the edge of every single page. Plot, characters, ideas, action and the ending form a symbiose of unexpected within known. Job done - tremendously well!
Equal parts police detective novel and alternate realities tale, this novel by Jaka Tomc is utterly unique. It's a love story/crime drama/ mystery/ sci-fi story. I love it!
"...But even if the potential for something is infinitesimal, it is an indisputable fact that there are only two possibilities. Something either is, or it is not."
So, is it? Or isn't it?
There is much philosophy presented and you will find yourself weighing the possibilities of Mr. Tomc's musings. The story of the detective Rok Kopitar is exciting and engrossing. It keeps you guessing until the very last page.
A real page turner with a captivating plot and a shocking ending. The main character is well build, the dialogues are sometimes intense, sometimes funny and sometimes sad. I especially loved the self-reflection monologues of the main character, contemplating life, humanity, love, happiness - all the things we should think about more, but don´t.
What would you do if you could read the diary of your future self? What if life and death, for yourself, your loved one and colleagues depended on what was written inside? These are the stakes for Rok Kopitar, a detective investigating a drug trafficking case. This novel is a real page turner, full of mystery, deceit, love and intrigue. A well written plot with an ending will not disappoint.
This is definitely a wild ride on the edge of your seat! I could not imagine knowing the future. No thank you! Detective Kopitar is a well-developed character and easy to follow and like. Excellent read.

The ending felt a bit abrupt and what was an excellent premise felt like a poor execution. However, at few places, it is interesting to note the human psyche and the view on life of the protagonist. Few of quotes which I specially liked were: 'Life is a Ph.D. dissertation read by semi-literate primary school pupils.' and 'Life happens in a place where nobody is physically present. In our minds and our hearts.'
Tipični a la Tomc roman: direktno, brez dolgovezenja, brez odvečnih leporečenj, z dodatki razmišljanj o življenju, o smislu bivanja, sreči, spremembah; ti so nadvse spretno vstavljeni v zgodbo in dogajanje. Kriminalka, vendar z dodano vrednostjo: vzporedna življenja, paralelni svetovi... Odlična zgodba, z izvrstnimi izseki in ravno pravo mero filozofskih razmišljanj. Meni osebno Tomčev najboljši roman, najverjetneje zaradi teme, okoli katere se spletajo razmišljanja.
This book was a decent read and a great thought-provoker. It allowed your mind delve into the characters and topics that are raised. My only issue would be that it is rather short for similar books of its genre.
