Overall Series 3.5 Stars

Binding Magick – 4 stars
Defying Magick - 4 stars
Embracing Magick – 2.5 Stars (love triangle issues)
Unleashing Magick – 3.5 Stars

Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Carmella has finally clued into which man is right for her and the apocalypse is nigh. So she better hurry up and save the world so she can get a little happily ever after time with her man.

Overall this is a fun and interesting series.  I enjoy the swap up of the normal creatures you see in Urban Fantasy to include demi-gods and creatures from Indian mythos.  I enjoy vampires and werewolves enough but it is a nice change to make some other creatures of mythology the main focus.

Carmella, being both a Witch and an Azura (god creature), definitely had its advantages.  But it also means that chaos is attracted to her and she will need to learn quickly how to trust the man she has come to love to help her and hopefully get her out to the other side of this crisis alive.

With battles, trips to the underworld, cosmic entities around, and jaunts into other realms, there is never a dull moment from the time Unleashing Magick starts. I was happy with the overall outcome of the story and while some side arcs went a little wonky here and there,  this was a fun, imaginative and interesting series.

The only issue I had with The Witch Blood Chronicles series, beside the lingering love triangle throughout (I hate love triangles in general on principle), is with the shorter book length sometimes there isn’t a lot of time to delve into characters.  Vitra is great and I adore him as a love interest but I really wanted to see him and Carmella together more while they were building a relationship to see how it developed so strongly. But most of their time together is glossed over.  They do get a lot more page time together in Unleashing Magick and I really enjoyed that, especially after Carmella decided to fight for her man.

Carmella has come a long way since Binding Magick and it is good to see the woman she has become.  Maybe we will get glimpses of her in other series set in this world.

Narration:

This is written by an English author and so most of the narration done by Zehra Jane Naqvi is very English accented.  This made the book far more enjoyable for me and it made Carmella seem cute like Brigit Jones.  I believe think she did most of the voices in this very well and I completely liked the narration.  I was able to listen at 1.5x speed and still get the full emotional effect.

Loved this series so much more than I was expecting too! Full review to come.

*EDITED TO ADD REVIEW OF FULL SERIES:
I picked this series up on a recommendation and I'm so glad I decided to take the chance.

With all of my most favorite UF series either ending or have already ended, I was in desperate need of something new and just all around different. I found that in the Witch Blood Chronicles.

It was so much fun and took me completely by surprise how much I not only got into the story, but into the characters as well. It didn't take me long to know that this was a series I wanted to binge read, something I don't do very often.

Set in a world very much like our own but one where magic and chaos and myths and gods are not something made up but something very much read and present. With creatures and beings and just...anything imaginable, it didn't take me long to see that this series was going to stand out from some of the others.

Packed full of steamy sexual tension, supernaturals, gods, demi-gods, magic, djinn, and all sorts of beasties and friendships with characters that are both kick butt and loyal to the end, this is series any UF fan is sure to love.

3.5 Definitely too short

Ok, so yay, the plot twist stuck. And I am glad that I was surprised and that everything turned out like it did (it's why we read stuff with HEA, right?).

Still, the book (and series) was short.

I appreciate the surprise I got and I'm a bit sad for this series to end, just like most of Debbie Cassidy's books.

Fun series to read, although way, way too short. I wanted more from this last book.

I have to admit, I struggled to get through these books. But, I wasn't going to give up. This was not my favorite series from Cassidy. That said, I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I hated Paimon- I wanted Vritra's dragon to eat him and couldn't understand how Carmella fell in love with him especially when she met all hot and sexy Vritra. Come on, really? Who wouldn't fall for that sexy alpha dragon.? I just loved Mira and Urvashi they always said something out the box and made me laugh.

Series Review

This was a good series with notable world building. Though I haven't read the author's other series, I anticipate these books dovetail nicely. I also liked the fact that Indian culture/names/what-have-you were central to the world. It was a nice change from white western culture. However, I do think most of the characters remained Caucasian so don't hang your hat on it. I also appreciated that this chick ended up more powerful than her mate, a big reason for my 3 star review. I don't see that very much in books.

I did have several issues with the series noted bekow.
-Boilerplate plot
-2 love interests (a pet peeve of mine)
-Timeline inconsistencies. Examples (SPOILERS): The timeline between her starting her new job and getting her witch powers bound. You leave one book with her getting her power cut off in a couple days and her starting a new job a couple days after that. You start the next book with her having somehow worked a week at her new job but her powers not bound because of a day or two delay. So how did a week pass? A similar issue happens between books 3 and 4 where you end book 3 two weeks from D day and book 4 starts a couple days after book 3 and somehow we're only 4 days from D day. Nitpicky, perhaps, but if the author can't keep an accurate timeline it messes up the story.
-Relationships move too fast. (SPOILERS) She falls in love with a djinn who is sharing her headspace in about a week. Maybe slightly longer than that, but really not by much. Not only isn't this believable but then she just looks a bit desperate to validate herself by having a guy. What's more, we have to spend the next 3 books unpacking this infatuation she calls love. In book 4 she finally pulls her head outta her butt and jumps into a mating with a guy she's wanted since book 1 but pretended not to because she was "in love." Ok, so there are reasons she jumps into but it all feel flat for me because she basically couldn't convince me she had a real emotional connection with anyone.
-This chick cries in like every other chapter. At some point she needs to buck up.
-Everything moves too fast because it's crammed into a few months. It makes all of this a hard pill to swallow and doesn't allow for a lot of plot depth.
-Feels a bit preachy because the main character is supposedly so good. Like ignores self preservation good. It all comes out in a way that feels very much like the main character knows how good she is and likes the attention it draws her. I felt like I was supposed to applaud her for being an idiot in some cases, and in others because she was just being a decent person. Her self worth was tied to how good she knew others thought her to be. (SPOILER) This is evidenced best in book 4 when her soul is being weighed as good or bad. If course she weighs in as amazingly good and that's why the god agrees to help her (are you kidding me?) and the rest of the world. She then asks for special treatment because she's so good; let's ignore the fact she was worried (fake worried?) that she was too awful to pass the test.
- This series has a main female character who has a rapid rise to power because of her rare powers that suddenly appear. This kind of character is often uninteresting to me because they don't undergo a lot of personal development outside their powers. I feel like the most personal development this character went through was finding some backbone and letting go of a love interest that was betrothed to another. While good things, these aren't exactly all that's needed in 800 plus pages of story.

Would I recommend this series? Yes. It is a good read despite the rote plot (2 stars in my book). It is also largely well written. What I liked most was that this character didn't ultimately hand over the reins to her man like so many female characters. She found her place and didn't give it up to a male. Did she lean on men too much to protect her while she found her place? IMO, yes. She was a scared little mouse early on and had to grow a backbone. But she grew it and it didn't suddenly disappear because she got laid. That said, I doubt I will re-read this series. I am a picky reader and I don't think the storyline will interest me on a re-read. For those whose tastes mirror mine, this is a light beach read. For those less picky, I think you'd enjoy it.

Remember my frustration with book three and Carmella's wavering and self-doubt? In the final installment, we see her come into her own as she chooses her mate and faces death and fights to protect Earth from a takeover.

The last book ended with a major cliffhanger, and this novel picks up shortly thereafter. Carmella is the anchor between the witches and the skein. All of this to stop the Cosmic God, Malachi. The anchor is draining her, and Malachi has begun visiting her dreams. With her motley crew of friends, Vritra, the Demi-God and the Asura to aid her she devises a plan, but first, she needs to get in touch with the lord of the underworld.

After the love triangle emerged and Carmella's weak assertion that she had chosen, I prayed.  I loved how the romantic thread came together. It was compelling, heated, humorous and so Carmella.  Never, piss of a human witch who is also half dragon. While the books in this series are short, Cassidy serves the full course from character development to world-building. She had me almost in tears as Carmella prepared to do whatever it took to save the world. The final scenes were climatic with action, twists and the supernatural fighting side-by-side.

Zehra Jane Naqvi finished out the series on audio. She became the voice of these characters for me. Her pacing, tone and different vocals all added to the story. I look forward to listening to more books narrated by her.

If you are looking for an urban fantasy story with  Hindu based beliefs, gods, and supernatural elements you'll love Unleashing Magick and the Witch Blood Chronicles. The series wrapped up nicely, although truth be told I wouldn't mind revisiting this world. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

3/3.5 Stars - I liked it
Audiobook

I have to say that overall, I'm impressed with this authors ability to write. I HATE the amount of focus and time that was spent on the beyond ridiculous love triangle, and I feel that waaaaay too much time was given to showing us the details of the wrong relationship when almost zero time was given to showing us the budding romance of the right relationship.

Almost all of my issues with this series focuses around the romance aspect of the story. The rest was great. Carmella is a wonderful character aside from her horrendous problem with unsuitable men. I really enjoyed this world and the characters. I'm impressed enough that I plan to check out more books by this author. I'm not sure which series came before this one, but it's clear that Carmella was a side character in another series before she became the focus of this one. I enjoyed the dialogue and friendships in this series. It felt authentic and organic.

In the end a nice and satisfying conclusion, many plotelements from throughout the series came together (appearances from the second book for example).

I liked this series. After a week of binging Debbie Cassidy on Kindle Unlimited, I can easily say she's an author I'm going to follow. I've already added two of her upcoming books to my to-read list. Both this series and her Chronicles of Arcana series were standouts to me. The others were fine, I just didn't have any desire to make it beyond the first book.

The premise of the first novel, Binding Magick, was what sold me. From there, each book after was a light and fun read. I don't have much to say about them, which is a pretty good thing because I didn't finish the books feeling particuarily critical.

TL;DR - fun. mostly likable characters. nice female friendships.

a few spoiler-y complaints...

“The cosmic gods are about to strike, humanity is on the verge of losing it’s free will, and Carmella Hunter and her friends are the last line of defence.”

I’ve absolutely loved all of the books in The Witch Blood Chronicles series, but have been especially looking forward to this book after book 3, Embracing Magick, ended in the king of all cliffhangers. Happily this book 4, Unleashing Magick, comes to the rescue and does it in grand style.

So now we are back with Carmella, a perfect kick-a** heroine if there ever was one, being drained as she acts as the anchor between the witches and the skein. War with the god Malachi is in the horizon and the fate of humanity lies in the balance. Don’t worry, she still has some friends, Vritra, the sexy dragon demi-god, most of all (and yes, things do develop there in the manner most desired) even if the Djinn seem to have abandoned her - so this series will end in the HEA it deserves. It’s a ride with adrenaline filled thrills and great romance along the way in this crazy world of gods, djinn, humans, shifters, witches, and vamps - but a (superbly written) ride that’s well worth taking.

I’m going to miss Carmella. Her story was just so much fun. There’s room for a next generation sequel series (hint, hint) Debbie Cassidy so maybe we will see her again.

Highly recommended.

Overall, I really liked this series and I liked the heroine, Carmella. She struck a near perfect balance for a well rounded and developed character. She was sassy without being a straight up bitch. She was compassionate to all creatures without being competely nïave. I was able to understand her inner working so I knew why she made the decisions that she made.

I also really enjoyed the plot. It might have been a little slow in places, each book build on the next and the pacing of the major events that happened the the novel didn't feel too rushed or muddled.

The main issue I had with the story was that there could have been more development with the secondary characters. For instance, Vritra was kind of bland as a character. I would have liked for there to be more scenes with him and Carmella that built up their relationship more. I wanted to root for them as a couple, but I didn't feel much of a reason to. It was like I was more or less told that these two belonged together. They needed for bonding moments so I could see that they were becoming close. I would have also liked for there to be more of a backstory on certain elements such as the void and what happened five years prior in the near-apocalyptic battle.

I really do like this series and think that a lot of the issues that I found could be ironed out with a serious edit.

When I first read that “Unleashing Magic” was only 73 pages I was concerned that the read would be watered down and lacking depth or complexity. However, I am pleased to say that this book was the perfect end to a wonderful series.

A battle is about to occur. Malachi has amassed an loyal following of otherworldly creatures and gods in his efforts to purge humans from this world. However, Carmella is having none of it and together with her ragtag group of friends she is getting ready for the battle.

Carmella is also ready to commit to the man she finally realizes she loves especially when an interloper tries to take him from her. “Oh no you didn’t!” I was very happy with her choice. In order to survive Carmella will have to forge alliances that will prove to have severe consequences. The question is will she be ready to pay the ultimate price.

There was plenty of surprises, action and intrigue in this mini read. It was the perfect ending. I’m really going to miss these characters so I guess I will just have to read it again.

Nice series

............... Kindle Unlimited - Thank you! ...............
This is said to be a spin-off series. At the time of this review that series isn't available in KU, so until/unless it is, I won't be reading it. I can totally vouch for this series standing up all on its own.

Not sure about the technical aspects involving the Hindu pantheon and other paranormals, but as character constructs in a paranormal fantasy, it all works just fine. I enjoyed the time spent with this story and found I really wanted at least a bit more time with the HEA. Proof the author keeps the reader involved through the entire series?

I've only read one other series ("...Midnight...") by this author. So far, I'm pretty impressed by her ability to step outside of the formulaic. I'll see as I read more of her work (and will happily do so), but I also like that she doesn't appear to just offer up repetitive redux. Yay!

**SPOILER 💢 ALERT**

I liked the whole series. I Liked most of the characters. I could even see myself having a drink with Ms. Hunter nea. Mrs. Brama. (That's unusual for me, I usually dislike the main character so much by the end I can't wait to move on and forget about them). *I fell for the nice sensitive guy every time. Paimon(all I never knew love like this before), Banner ( I'm not really a Playboy, I just need the right woman to settle down with) , but not Vritra, I don't care about your personal boundaries I'm a Dragon damit! He grew on me but good. I even got choked up when his daughter died. 🥺🙄 Mira and Urvashi and the whole chock click helped make these books worth reading. It was the relationships that made it for me. (Love you babe!) The world building was just the icing on the cake. Thank you. I'm pretty new to Ms. Cassidy I think I'll go and listen to some of her other books.✌🏾

I find it strange that for 3 books there was reservations and struggles with magic and suddenly no such issue in 4th book, especially considering she had NO magic whatsoever at the start. 🤔The books are filled with unnecessary interactions of side-characters and the actual training to come into powers/ learning how to use powers are glossed over. And glossed over so much that its suddenly a non-issue at all, which gives it a dis-jointed feeling.

Having read many of the author’s books, I find that there is always:
1. One scary big guy (with a scar across the face if you read the author’s RH books) whom usually has difficulty falling for the MC; 🥱
2. MC gets to lay down the law at some point (having been meek and mild beforehand) because she tires of being trampled on; 🤨
3. Interactions with same-sex (women) call each other ‘babe’ (which leads me to wish there was some form of understanding on author’s part that #4 is irksome); 😒
4. Big scary guy ends up calling MC ‘baby’ and becomes all mushy 😐 (babe for the girls and baby for the love of her life - erm, are there NO other terms of endearment???);
5. Whatever hindrance there was previously to magic (or similar), evaporates once mated. Who knew that mating was the answer to everything?! 🙄

Once you read multiple series of the author back-to-back, it becomes extremely annoying 😑

I was sad that this was the end of Carmella's story but it was a wonderful end to it. I enjoyed each minute of this story I was so happy that Carmella was able to find her place in this world when I read the first book I was not her biggest fan I thought she was whiny and a bit annoying however I decided to stick with the server and am so glad I did because she really evolved over the last three books. This story is so full of interesting world building that played off what I learned in the Gatekeep chronicles if you have not read that series you really should. This is not a stand-alone story so if you have not read the last three Witch blood chronicles you will be lost in the story.

I can not wait to read more for this author and hope she will do something with the other gateways we hear about through the story.

This review applies to the whole series really (in earlier books I hoped these issues would have been corrected by this point, but alas): The story is good, but I just didn't feel the chemistry of the romance. I do wish the author had made more of an effort to help with name pronunciation, is it v-rit-ra? Vritr-a? Vri-tra? (Things like that, who knows where the accent is supposed to be?) The names are taken from Hindu deities.. (ok I looked it up: vrit-ruh...).

Also, most people aren't familiar with Indian holidays or foods. I don't know if it didn't occur to her or she just assumed people would know, like Diwali, better descriptions would have been a good idea. (If you don't know, Diwali is a festival of light that usually occurs around another "festival of light", Hanukkah. They aren't related, but I always liked that we both have "light" holidays around the same time).

First of all I have to say that I loved reading Unleashing Magic.. the 4th and final book to this series..

Carmella Hunter and her friends are the last line of defense to save the human race from the Cosmic Gods destruction and taking the Humans free will. With the help from the Coven Witches, the Vampire leader, and all of the supernaturals.. plus Carmella being the anchor for the Skein (this happened in book 3) for the witches total power. Will they be able to defeat the evil Cosmic God?
You will to read Unleashing Magic for yourself to find out what happens... I did and found it AWESOME!!!

Fabulous conclusion with vivid descriptions of both the characters and in the world-building storyline. Remember the saying, the best-laid plans? well, our heroine couldn't catch water if she stood in it. Plenty of action, and snark in this wonderfully entertaining read. Debbie has done another great job with this installment - as if she'd present us with anything less. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

A good story..

I liked all the breeds of supernatural characters....all fighting a cosmic war to save thier humans. They may not like them. But they are theirs...and they will fight before some cosmic god brain washes them and removes thier free will.
The dragons are bad ass. I really like some of the supernatural creatures ive never heard of before. The din are very interesting. I enjoyed learning more about them.
