Time After Time is a fresh and funny work of women’s commercial fiction, which explores the romantic paths that could have been . . .
For fans of Laura Barnett and Dani Atkins, Hannah McKinnon has written a moving story that will resonate with any woman who has ever wondered, in a moment of frustration, “what if?”.
Hayley Cooper, a powerful but now struggling lawyer, fantasizes about what her life would be like if only if she’d made different choices. It’s understandable; the past two years have been hell. She barely sees her kids, her boss is trying to sabotage her, and her marriage is falling apart.
Burnt out, Hayley goes to sleep wishing for a different life. When she wakes up married to her first boyfriend, one she has not seen in over twenty years, she realizes there might be some truth in the saying “be careful what you wish for”. Over a single weekend, like Ebenezer Scrooge, Hayley gets to see her life on other side of the white picket fence – not just with her first ex, but with each of her past loves. But is the grass always greener, and will she ever want to go home?
I was born in the UK grew up in Switzerland, and moved to Canada in 2010. Unsurprisingly I love chocolate, mountains and cheese, and books, of course.
My first novel, TIME AFTER TIME, a light-hearted romantic read, published in 2016, after which I moved to the dark side.
My internationally bestselling thrillers include: THE NEIGHBORS (2018), HER SECRET SON (2019), SISTER DEAR (2020), YOU WILL REMEMBER ME (2021), NEVER COMING HOME (2022), THE REVENGE LIST (2023), ONLY ONE SURVIVES (2024), and A KILLER MOTIVE (2025).
I also returned to my romantic comedy roots with THE CHRISTMAS WAGER, written under the pseudonym Holly Cassidy (2023) and THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN (2024).
Thanks to net galley for giving me a preview of the book! Loved this book! I really love a book when it gives alternate realities and Hannah McKinnon approaches this brilliantly! Hayley was a lovely character and the book kept you hooked throughout! Will definitely look out for this author in the future!
There's a quote in the book 'He said it's Saturday. Dear God, it's like Ground hog Day meets Sliding Doors'. And I think that sums up this story very well.
Hayley's life is at breaking point. Her work as a solicitor has no work/life balance, and she is being undermined by her boss. Her marriage is strained while her husband is trying to set up his own web designing company and her kids.... well she just doesn't see enough of them and lastly her parents are causing her worry, especially her Dad as he has had a major health issue. After a disagreement with her husband she flees to her best friend's house for some sympathy and a few drinks. Meanwhile a thought goes through her head....'What if'. Upon waking up the next morning she finds the person beside her is not her husband Rick, it's her first boyfriend Chris and she finds herself back in the 1980's. Now Hayley has to work out what's happening, as we join her on her journey through her serious relationships and what may have been.
Time after Time was a very easy read with likeable characters. I always enjoy a 'good time travel/what if' kind of book, as they represent a good escapism. I found the chapters of each relationship good but within these chapters, there were chapters of what really happened in the relationship and then the 'what if' part. It took me a while to work this out but once I realised how it was written I got into the flow. It was also interesting to see the constant people in her life ie Hayley's parents, best friend Ellen and husband Mark and the circumstances of their life in each of Hayley's 'relationships'. Is the grass really greener on the other side?
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy to read and review.
HarperCollins UK, Avon and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Time After Time, in exchange for an honest review.
Hayley Cooper seems to have it all, if you are on the outside, looking in. Her job as a powerful attorney keeps her away from her children and her husband. More concerned with sabotaging Hayley's career than helping to run a successful practice, her boss seems to have it out for her. One night, Hayley goes to sleep wishing that her life was different. When she awakens to the life that she dreamed of when she was younger, will Hayley be able to gain some perspective and appreciate all that she has?
Because the premise and the plot were too similar to Groundhog's Day and A Christmas Carol, I was unable to fully appreciate Time After Time. The lighthearted writing style helped in the development of the main character's personality, but did nothing to convey the seriousness that lingered under the surface. I found it hard to empathize with Hayley, although she did have my sympathy. Although there really were no surprises here, Time After Time was a fun read.
Such a great rom com! It is everything you want in a book! It made me laugh out loud, blush, tear up, it just had all the feels. It also made me take a step back and want to be better with my marriage and showed me how important it is to think that way. Absolutely adored it! Such a great and creative story!
Loved this book!!! Took me a little while to get my head around the shifts in time but once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Having read two of her books now, Hannah McKinnon is fast becoming one of my all-time favourite authors. Can't wait for the release of her next book!
When Time After Time by Hannah McKinnon was announced by Avon over on Twitter, I knew that I wanted to read this book. The cover, which I spotted first, enchants me completely even now. How could it not? If you know me at all then you'll know that I love anything that looks even slightly whimsical and romantic, and after I'd read the blurb it seemed to tick all of my boxes. I couldn't wait to begin reading and I was delighted when Avon allowed me a review copy, which I'm incredibly grateful for, so thank you very much Avon!
In Hannah McKinnon's Time After Time, readers step back into the early years of Hayley Cooper's life in an entirely heartfelt and humorous way. Having argued with her husband Rick in the present day, the distance between them more visible than ever before, Hayley heads to best friend Ellen's house and drowns her troubles in wine. The next morning, after wondering about how her life could have turned out if she'd made different choices all those years before, Hayley wakes up in a bizarre and worrying world. She's gone back in time, and is about to find out the truth behind the old saying "be careful what you wish for" in a way she'd never thought possible.
One of the things that immediately stood out to me about this book was its structure. I adored how the author took the reader back in time, introducing readers to each of Hayley's early relationships and then back to the present day where Hayley is living the life she would have been handed if she'd stuck with each of her past boyfriends. I couldn't help but to feel a sliver of excitement during each jump between the times. I loved being witness to the moment Hayley met these men, and then learning of how the relationship would have went if they'd stayed together. It was brilliantly-written and had me hooked immediately. From each chapter to the next, I was captivated by the turn of events that took place and couldn't wait to see how Hayley would handle the cards she was dealt. There were so many ups and downs within the story itself. One moment things would seem perfect and by the next Hayley's life was up in the air once more. Fast-paced, funny and full of fabulous antics, I was eager to see where Hayley would end up next, and with whom.
The characters within Hannah McKinnon's Time After Time were fantastically put together. As well as Hayley herself, I found meeting her ex-boyfriend's incredibly entertaining. From one to the next, I was never quite sure of how things would take a turn for the worst, or for the best. Hayley herself was a wonderful heroine within this novel, one whom I'm sure lots of women can relate to. Hayley's marriage to Rick in the present day was becoming strained from life, from her career and from trying to perform that balancing act that so many women do. It's an almighty row that sets off Hayley's thoughts about where else she could have ended up being if she'd made different choices, without having any idea of what would come from it. I adored watching Hayley grow into the woman she was in the present day. We see her turn into a woman beside her best friend Ellen, along with the trials and tribulations of life, including dating. I truly felt as if I knew these characters inside out having gone so far back into their history. It was completely endearing and I just couldn't get enough.
All in all, I absolutely loved Hannah McKinnon's Time After Time. Although the author kept it real, it still had an element of magic and fairy-tale about it that was absolutely scrumptious. Written with heart and warmth, and that age old question of 'what if?', I'd certainly recommend this book to anyone who's ever wondered about where they could have ended up instead of where they are today. Cosy and superbly inviting, Becca's Books is awarding Time After Time by Hannah McKinnon with four of my bookish cupcakes. A must-read for anyone who loves a romantic comedy with a touch of sparkle!
Special thanks to Avon Books and Hannah McKinnon for providing me with a review copy of Time After Time in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Do you ever sit around and wonder, “what if?” Whether it be about a move somewhere, a job, or an ex? I would think that at some point, everyone has stopped to question a decision and wondered how things would be different if they had chosen differently. Today I read, Time After Time: A Heart-Warming Novel About Love, Loss, and Second Chances, by Hannah McKinnon, a story about wondering “what if” and getting to see how things would’ve been if done differently. This is a fantastic first novel of McKinnon’s touching on romance, as well as, fantasy.
Hayley is grumpy and in a life rut. She has never-ending work hours as a solicitor at a law firm, feels that she is on the verge of losing her job, her father has had a stroke, she never sees her family, and fights with her husband about everything. After a particularly bad argument with her husband, Rick, Hayley takes off to her best friend Ellen’s house. After too much wine, Hayley sits with her friend wondering, “what if?” She recalls previous boyfriends prior to marrying Rick and wonders to herself if life would have been better if she would have married one of them. The following morning, Hayley awakens to find herself in a different life, in a “what if” life. From here, McKinnon takes the reader on a journey between past, present, reality, and what could have been. Hayley is able to re-visit and live as a wife of Chris, Ian, Matthew, and Sean, to catch a glimpse of what her life would have been like if she had married each of them. As the story unfolds, it flip-flops between past (providing details of how they met and their relationship), and make-believe present (where Hayley sees how things would have turned out if she had married/stayed with them). As Hayley moves through each of her “what if” lives, the reader wonders if she will see a better life, or a better choice that she could have made, or if marrying Rick was her destiny.
So, first of all, this is not a new concept in writing or films. Think Groundhog Day or The Family Man, and honestly when I first realized the premise of this novel, I sort of grumbled to myself about this story being told before. However, I really enjoyed this novel. I sat down, started reading, and finished about three hours later. The cool thing about McKinnon’s novel, is that in each “what if” scenario, it wasn’t just Hayley’s life that was changed, but everyone’s lives were different. Whether it pertained to her Dad and having a stroke, or Ellen’s ongoing struggle to have a baby with her husband, each course Hayley caught a glimpse of held something different for her loved ones. I enjoyed McKinnon’s writing style which although a UK writer, I wasn’t struggling to understand little expressions or innuendos. The main reason I loved this book was the theme. We all make choices, both small and large, and its human nature to look back once in a while and wonder. However, I am a believer that things happen for a reason and people don’t just fall into our lives. There is a reason we meet certain people, fall in love with certain people, or just don’t quite feel that certain people are right for us. What’s important though, is that even when things get bumpy or rough, that we stop and remind ourselves that we are with that person for a reason, that we did fall in love with that person, and that life without them would be miserable. In the real world, we don’t have the luxury of time-travelling through our “what ifs,” so we need to respect, embrace, and be grateful for what our real life is.
I hope you will read and enjoy Time After Time: A Heart-Warming Novel About Love, Loss, and Second Chances as much s I did, and I can’t wait to read more from this up and coming author!
Thanks to Netgalley, this ARC was received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Hayley is going through some rough times. Even though she has dedicated her all to work, barely having time for her family, her latest tasks have all fallen through and now she might be fired. To top her day, she engages into The Fight with her husband, lately a stay-at-home daddy trying to open his own business. Perhaps, life would have been better had she given a chance to her previous men... That is when the magic happens and shows her a glimpse into her alternate life.
In the beginning, I thought the atmosphere the cover and the blurb imply was misleading. The first parts are far from heartwarming and much closer to a comedy full of wit on how life could actually be worse. However, the story evolves into something more serious and closer to what you envision from that cover—without losing steam.
Is this really a debut novel? I found it amazing the control the author had over the story. This also proves how important an editor can be. You don't need to analyze much to notice how well planned this was. And I have a thing for planning, I feel goosebumps when pieces fall together.
Divided in two moments, Hayley's travel through her alternative lives and her past. I'm not fond of flashbacks but I found myself interested in both stories right because of how well the author managed to fit past and present. Also, be prepared for well calculated cliffhangers at the end of chapters. They always make sure I go for one more chapter before I go for some other activity. However, because of the structure, the answer to each question the end of the chapter left you with will only be found in the chapter after the following one.
For that, the book was not only easy to read but also engaging.
And I haven't even gone into the characters or the story itself!
Present-days Hayley is stressed out in the beginning and by the time you can get how she actually is, she is already going through changes. However, younger Hayley was a nice character. I confess I was a little jealous about how successful people kept saying she was—I prefer identifying with those who shine less. It was never a reason for me to feel anything negative toward her. In fact, it did make me understand better how her present-days situation may affect her even deeper than the norm.
The rest of the characters were even more interesting. Even though it was assumedly a Groundhog Day type of plotline, it allowed me to see the main ones through different lights. I was in love with Mark and Ellen, I must say.
Hayley's men were a little stereotyped in the beginning, I could even give them objecticized nicknames, like "the rich one", "the eternal baby one"... However, as the story progressed, their personalities too became more tridimensional. I did shed tears for poor Matthew, such a nice guy to the end...
The ending was more than satisfying. When you think she was able to reach perfect closure, the author went beyond for a few more pages. Usually, I would have felt anxious—"The story is over!" I'd scream at my e-reader—but I was so in love with the characters and her style I felt even happy for the extra time I got to spend with them.
My sole complaint is more of a personal standing but reviews are for personal opinions after all. I felt bothered by how the author associated happiness with "marriage and two kids". Her idea of an ultra unhappy ending implied choosing to live a single, childless life.
This is surely a page turner. Don't be fooled by the cover, this is a lively, easy-to-read story in which the author entertains you with all changes one life can suffer when you follow a different path. But don't think this is just a light rom com; won't even notice until you are already too involved. I can't wait for more from the author and see how much better she'll become.
Such a good question; have you ever wondered ‘what if?’. Have you ever wondered what things would be like if you had taken a different path in life? Have you ever wondered what your acquaintances from the past would be like after you have moved on? Lets just pause for a second whilst you get into the ‘what if?’ mind-set….
Have you thought about it yet?
What about now?
Now?!
We’re only human, of course we are bound to wonder ‘what if?’ whenever relationships end, or we make a huge decision in life. However, we cannot wave a magic wand, or close our eyes and be back in time, to a life that never was. Well, WE can’t, but there seems to be just one person that can. Does the name ‘Hayley Cooper’ ring a bell to you? No? Well it should! (Why haven’t you read this book yet?! :o)
Hayley Cooper is in a difficult situation in her current life and it’s safe to say that she is pretty peeved with the way things are going. She wants a different life, and it gets her wondering about her ex boyfriends. Little did she know she would come face to face with them when she woke up the next morning.
That reminds me, what day is it today? Monday, or Saturday?
The cover of this book totally threw me. I had seen it multiple times over on Twitter and Amazon but hadn’t had the chance to click buy. So, when Avon publishers tweeted about it again one night, I made sure I got it there and then. Not only is it a memorable cover, it is also a very romantic looking cover, although I stupidly judged the book by its cover and wondered why I was getting confused. Only a smidge though, honestly…
Hayley is the main character of the story. She is married with children but there is something about her life that isn’t sitting right with her. Something doesn’t seem quite right and she cannot seem to put her finger on it. That is of course, until she follows all the paths of her past that she never took. Hayley seems to like the weekend in this book because she re-visits the same day multiple times! If you went back in time to visit all of the ‘what ifs’ of your past, do you think that you would be met with positivity, with everything the same as you have always dreamt about?
That is a tough one to answer. Although in Hayley’s case, it was definitely an eye opener for her (and for me, her past is fascinating!). My opinion of Hayley changed throughout the book because of how the story unfolded. One moment I felt incredibly sorry for her, another time I felt infuriated with her because she just could not see what she had which meant her decisions were otherwise jaded. Hayley’s best friend is a hoot, my sort of person with a mouth that’s always on fast forward.
Considering the amount of to-ing and fro-ing this book does, it didn’t actually get me flustered, which is surprising. Books like that usually do, but maybe because the switch was always expected, it didn’t confuse me. Whilst the book contains very funny moments, as well as some difficult situations, it made me think about my life. What if I had chosen different paths? Obviously I can’t do anything about it now, but it’s only natural to wonder. Hannah has written such a heart warming and emotionally driven book, which was full of depth and relatable situations. The message behind the story is a rather powerful one, however, the added softness in terms of humour and sarcasm, turns it into a light-hearted read as well. I must say, I am looking forward to whatever Hannah has up her sleeve next. I can promise you one thing though, I won’t ever be thinking ‘what if’ about this book because I know I took the right path by reading it!
I love books and films that look at what might have happened if people had made different choices. Films like Sliding Doors and of course, It's A Wonderful Life. Books like Laura Barnett's The Versions of Us and Carmel Harrington's Every Time a Bell Rings. And Hannah McKinnon has written a book which is right up there as one of my favourites.
Hayley is a high flying lawyer working in mergers and acquisitions. She's always loved her job and been very good at it but recently pressure at work has taken over. She's spending more and more time at work, seeing less and less of husband Rick and children Millie and Danny and more time snapping and arguing with them. After an argument she storms off to best friend Ellen's and over a bottle of wine they do the 'what if' chat about Hayley's previous boyfriends. When she wakes the next morning she is horrified to find herself in bed with Chris, her first serious boyfriend. Has she had so much to drink that she has cheated on her husband and can't remember?
Poor Hayley soon comes to realise that she seems to be married to Chris and it most definitely hasn't worked out well. "Am I getting what I asked for? A glimpse into how my life could have been?" And when she wakens up over the next few days, she finds she is in a relationship with each of the men she has had serious relationships with. "He said it's Saturday. Dear god, it's like Groundhog Day meets Sliding Doors!"
What was great fun about this book was that although Hayley could remember clearly all about her real life with Rick and her children, of course nobody else could in these alternate lives. All the people she loved and cared about were living the alternate lives too leading sometimes to really funny situations and sometimes to really heartbreaking ones. Hayley realising that she was the leader of a kickboxing class was just hilarious. Finding out what happened to Hayley's friends and family in some of the alternate versions gave me a lump in the throat. Hannah McKinnon was just terrific at making me feel all the emotions along with Hayley.
Time After Time was a book that I raced through. Although it moves back and forward in time and different realities a lot, I was never confused as to what part of Hayley's life I was reading about. The characters were all so believable whether they were likeable or not. Hannah McKinnon created alternative realities for Hayley that were true to life, whether that life was funny, disappointing or upsetting. "Life was messy, it got complicated. What mattered, Hayley realised, was how you dealt with it." Hugely enjoyable, a must read for anyone who loves a great romantic comedy story and believes in true love. And a lesson that, as always, you must be careful what you wish for!
(I'm grateful to publishers Avon for allowing me to read a review copy of this book via Netgalley. )
Time After Time is one of those books you can't put down - if only because, you absolutely have to find out what happens to Hayley. My favourite kind of books are the ones that show what the grass is like on the other side, and Hayley is desperate to know if the grass is indeed greener considering her life is falling apart - she's arguing with her hubby Rick, she's losing clients left, right and centre, in her job as a lawyer, and she can't help wondering if one of her exes would have been a better fit as a soulmate.
So we journey with Hayley as she sees how each of her lives in turn would have panned out with her exes - as well as learning the story back in the 90s/early 00s about how she met them originally. It's a fantastic way to tell the story, although I got tripped up a few times trying to remember what was real (in the 90s) and what was just a potential side plot as Hayley sees her exes again, because her life each time is vastly different, and it's interesting to see how Hayley's life would have been with Chris, Sean, Matthew or Ian. There were good bits and bad bits with each of Hayley's exes, and I absolutely loved Matthew, he was by far my favourite of the four. If Hayley doesn't want him (OR RICK) can I have him, please?
I really liked Hayley, and I had sympathy with her when it came to wondering if her life could be better, because haven't we all wondered what would have happened if we had made a different decision? Done something differently? So it was interesting to go on that journey with her, because it's almost as if she needed to go on that journey to figure out what she wanted from her life going forward, with or without Rick. I actually really liked Rick, he seemed so sweet.
Time After Time was such an emotional thought-provoking read, and I really enjoyed it. I just had to keep reading, because you really do need to find out what happens to Hayley in the end, and I was never quite sure. I loved the fact this was set in present times and in the 90s, so we knew Hayley when she was younger, although there should have been way more pop culture! The 90s were awesome, man, and we needed more than just Back For Good by Take That. But, kidding aside, this is a fantastic read, and Hannah is a bright new voice is fiction (and not to be confused with the American Hannah McKinnon, there are TWO Hannan McKinnons FYI).
I managed to read an entire chapter of this fun book before I passed out drooling on my pillow, the reading lamp still on. It felt like it was a thousand degrees in our house, the AC taking forever to finally work its magic. My middle kid was irritable and woke me from my stupor asking for another tuck in because she was too hot and couldn't turn her brain off. As I stumbled back to bed for the second time, I was sticky, and bloated, and sex was the farthest thing from my mind. Yet, when my fella returned from tucking in our almost-four-year-old son who is finally starting to spend at least half the night in his own bed, I suggested a quickie. A short and sweet little romp with the lights off because life is short, and it's harder than ever to stay connected to what matters. Like extra tuck ins. And sweaty sex before you get interrupted again by little footsteps. I blame Hannah McKinnon for this minor revelation.
Time After Time was the perfect start to my summer reading. It's playful, nostalgic, sexy and clever. As a child of the eighties, I loved all of the nods to great moments in the pop culture of my pubescent years. I loved all of the questions this book asks, all of the what ifs we torture ourselves with when life becomes too complicated with the stuff that doesn't really matter so much. There were real, sweet moments of connection between the delightful characters McKinnon has concocted and I grew attached to these characters within the first couple of chapters, feeling their failures and frustrations as sharply as I shared their victories and their steamy love scenes. I was also struck by the parallels between protagonist Haley's past relationships and my own. I too have dated the controller, the narcissist, and the really sweet guy and I've walked away from all of those to find my own version of happily ever after. Haley's an every gal who even us queer and quirky gals can relate to, which is no small feat for chick lit to serve up.
Time After Time will be an easy book to share with my own circle of gals who love a good, light read. It was the perfect balance of frivolous fun and touching poignancy that changed my life at least enough to squeak in an extra orgasm this week. Kudos to you McKinnon! I can't wait to read more of your writing.
Hayley and Rick are having a tough time together. Things aren't going well at work for Hayley either, because she has a terrible boss. She rarely sees her family and she works as hard as she can to bring a good salary to the table, so she can take care of the people she loves. She fantasizes about a different life, what would have happened if she'd have married any of her other boyfriends? When she wakes up next to her first love the next day Hayley knows she should have been careful wishing something like that. There's no going back now and she has to see what marriage would have been like with each of her ex boyfriends. Has she made the right choices in the past or could she have been much happier than she is now?
Time After Time is a fantastic story about a woman who wishes a different path for herself. When Hayley sees what it's like to be married to the men who used to be in her life before Rick she learns to see what's really in her heart. Each marriage brings her more understanding. With every man she dated in her past she learned more about what she wanted and what to look for in a partner. Being married to them teaches her something new about herself again. I loved that aspect of the story. Hayley's experiences make her wiser and they give her valuable insights into her own behavior.
Hayley is a sweet and strong woman, but like every human being she has her flaws. She's a wonderful main character and I could easily picture her with each of the men she chose. She's strong and goes after what she wants. When she makes her decisions she doesn't question herself. I loved reading the mix of her past and present and Hannah McKinnon cleverly switches between them. Timing is important in a story like this and she knows exactly when to give what information. That makes Time After Time interesting and gripping. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to Hayley and what being married to each partner would show her about herself.
Hannah McKinnon's writing flows easily. Her story is compelling and I couldn't put it down. People are always asking themselves the what-if question and as a theme for a book it's both fascinating and entertaining. I liked this story very much and think it's a great read with a lovely romantic ending.
At first I thought the groundhog Day style would annoy me but as each new day began it got Hayley closer to the truth in her real life, I couldn't wait to find out what happened in the next one. Cleverly positioned back story in between the new days! A really great read making you think about all the what-ifs and where you're meant to be.
Hayley’s life is a mess: her job is taking too much of her time, her boss is horrible, she never sees her kids and her marriage is falling apart.
It goes to the point where she asks herself the very famous question “What if”?
What if she had ended up with one of her exes instead of her husband? How would her life have turned out?
Well, guess what: she gets to experience this. Every day is a Saturday. Every day she wakes up in an alternate universe, facing what her life would have been if…
First of all, I absolutely love the concept for this book. We’ve all faced one situation where we ended up thinking “oh damn, but what if I had done something differently?” - so we can all relate to Hayley’s situation.
I loved how full the characters were. They’re very extreme, in my opinion, and you either love them or hate them, but I didn’t feel bothered by it, on the contrary, I think it suits the story and it helps Hayley make decisions.
I also loved how the reader gets one chapter in the “what if” reality and one chapter from the real past, leading to her current situation. You get to see her true memories, and the one she would have had if she had made other choices.
Special mentions to Mark and Ellen, who are amazing friends - I loved their characters.
I think it’s a quick read, very entertaining, with a layer of depth that makes you reconsider your choices.
*I received this book through netgalley in exchange for an honest review* Truly, an amazing book. This is a book that will stick with me.
I loved how the book went from the past to the present in order to shed more light on Hayley's life and relationships so the reader knew exactly what she went through and then wonder about the jump to the 'future'.
I enjoyed the story and romances. I don't want to say too much about the love parts because that is what the story is about.
I will say that, the main part of the book was a bit obvious. I never doubted where she would end up but, that isn't the point of the story, in my opinion. Physically and romantically where she ended up wasn't as important as mentally where she ended up, aka the changes she went through and what she learned about herself.
There is an important message about love here, one that Hayley's father says in the book.
'Relationships are like houses. They need maintenance and if you aren't ready for that you shouldn't buy one.'
I feel this isn't something said enough but, it is definitely true.
Seriously, what a book and really makes me think about my own decisions - and even those decisions that haven't even come to pass yet. Every little thing you do can change your life.
This book is based on the thought we all have, "What if". Hayley is dissatisfied with her life and feels her husband Rick doesn't contribute enough to the home life. She visits her friend, Ellen and wonders what her life would have been like with her previous boyfriends.
The book goes back and forward but is very easy to follow. It works forward roughly from Hayley's first serious relationship and offers many different scenarios. We meet all her previous men, and see the way the present has been changed each time, including changes to her friends and family.
It is very easy to follow and is very well written. I didn't get lost once and it really does make you think about your own life - and maybe that it is best to accept "what is".
My only criticism is that the author seems a little obsessed with children - and that happiness can only be found with having a family. But, apart from that one quibble, I really enjoyed the book.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A delightful story, filled with hilarious moments and poignant twists
I gobbled up Hannah McKinnon’s debut, which for me is always a sign that the story gripped me and that I kept wanting to know what would happen next. Right from the start, it was easy to cheer for the protagonist, Hayley. A lot of women will no doubt be able to empathize with her struggles: she’s a nice younger woman trying to juggle a crappy job, a marriage that has lost some of its sparkle, kids, and elderly parents who need help after misfortune strikes.
The author has a superior sense of humor, a deft hand at dialogue, and more than a few tricks in her writer’s toolkit to keep up the suspense till the very end. Plus, who could say no to a trip through the decades, starting with the late 1980s, and complete with well-selected details?
Hopefully, this will come out in print form as I’d like to give a copy to my grown-up daughter, and to a few friends and relatives who still prefer print over digital.
One of those novels that leaves you with an 'ahhhhhhh that was cute' feeling. Very satisfying ending and great character journey. The only things I struggled with were that this book jumps from past to present very often and there are also a LOT of characters to try and remember, therefore if I put the book down and came back to it later, I had to try and jog my memory to remember exactly who was who. This book would definitely read better if one was to read it all in one go. I really enjoyed this novel though as it combined lots of my favourite things, the 'what if' questions, the consequences of decisions we make and working out what's most important to you in life. It reminded me a little of the film Sliding Doors in the way the protagonist gets to see how their life would have gone if they'd taken different routes. A very promising debut and after this I can't wait to see what Hannah writes next!
I readily admit to being a sucker for anything time travel or what if? related. I grew up reading Jack Finney and watching Doctor Who and I’m always on the lookout for anything new in the genre (with an occasional revisit to It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol). I dived into Time After Time and happily allowed it to swallow me whole, barely pausing for sleep and coming up for air only at the powerful climatic scene (no spoilers, but lawyers are particularly going to love it). The writing is brilliant (the author looks at life with a wicked grin and a knowing wink) and the story is a no-holds-barred, take you by the scruff of the neck confrontation with the possibilities – some wonderful, most appalling – that might have been. I look forward enormously to Hannah McKinnon’s next book.
*I was provided an advance copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review*
Hayley Cooper is tired. She has a demanding full-time job as a solicitor, two kids, and a husband that works from home establishing his new business. She's the breadwinner, and the effort her husband, Rick, is putting into his business means Hayley is left to do all the household chores, and worry about her elderly parents. Hayley is feeling disenchanted with her marriage, and wonders what if...
Somehow, she is transported back to the past, where what if? becomes reality when she's paired with four ex-boyfriends who always made her wonder.
This book was a light and easy read, perfect for the beach or by the pool. I was hoping for a bit more humour in the dialogue and I wanted to align with the characters a little more.
*review only edited as I clicked 2 stars instead of 3*
A weekend of reliving her past relationships – and how they could have turned out - gives Hayley a chance to sort out how she really feels about her life. As the story unfolds, we learn more and more about Hayley’s past, and how it led her to the present.
This book was really fun, and hard to put down. Hayley is a loveable character, and I enjoyed following her through her struggles with what could have been. She’s funny, relatable, and you can’t help hoping things turn out all right for her in the end.
Hannah McKinnon has great attention to detail, and it makes the story come alive. She captures sights, textures, scents and sounds and creates vivid mental images. Her dialogue is snappy and realistic, provoking laughter, worry or tears depending on the scene. I would definitely recommend this to friends, and will be keeping my eye out for Hannah’s next novel!
Hayley is dissatisfied with her life - the kids are always fighting, she is under so much pressure at work she hardly sees them or her husband Rick and so after another row she is having a drink with a friend reminiscing about old boyfriends and wondering how her life would be now if she had stayed with them
She is soon to find out when she wakes up and find Chris next to her and she freaks - did she really have that much to drink, has she been unfaithful? She then proceeds to wake up with various exes and finds out what life could have been like!
A great story - who hasn't wondered how their life could have turned out if they had taken a different path - I will definitely be look for more books by this writer
I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The premise reminded me of Landline by Rainbow Rowell in that it explores the alternate paths ones life could have taken if one simple things had gone differently. I like the idea of multiple different options as opposed to just one scenario. I found the progression to be a bit slower than I would have liked and there is a prevailing anxiety to the narrative. However this for many readers could lend to the overall experience by really putting you into Hayley's mindset as she's trying to figure out what's going on. I would absolutely recommend this book as a great mix of mystery, fantasy, romance and the best of "chick" lit.
All I can say is that I'm so glad that's over with.
The writings ok and the idea behind the book is pretty good (it's described as Groundhog day meets Sliding Doors within the story itself) but for whatever reason I found the whole thing a bit of a struggle. I couldn't connect with main character Hayley at all (or any of the other characters for that matter) and just couldn't bring myself to care what happened.
I feel like this is a book that should have been a lot sharper, a bit funnier and generally a bit more of an emotional read but it just didn't work for me and I wanted it all to be over as soon as possible.
This is a fairly predictable read but it's highly entertaining and fun to read. Haley revisits many of her old boyfriends and sees what her life could have potentially been. In the end she realizes just how lucky she was to have picked Rick and have their family. I enjoyed the last few chapters because she solved a major problem at work with her new insight and tracked down the men she had dated and met with them to see what their lives were like now. I've never read Hannah McKinnon before but she has a nice easy writing style. A great read for a day on the beach or by the pool.
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley-thank you!
From the description, I was worried this book would be depressing, but it turned out to be light and fun! Hayley is going through a hard time at work and with her family life, so she begins to wonder what her life would have been like if she had married one of her other boyfriends. She falls asleep wishing for a new life and wakes up in an alternate reality. I honestly that the premise was a bit cheesy, but it was done well. If you're looking for a fun read this summer, this book is worth picking up!
