The world outside the cities went to hell a long time ago. When pollution got so bad it burned away the ozone layer, humans built protective domes in order to survive. Now, between the radiated air and the fighting among dragons and phoenixes, it's not safe to go outside.

I'm a transporter. Self employed in a dangerous world, delivering valuable goods from client to recipient. But I never take on the more lucrative dome to dome jobs.

When someone breaks into my apartment looking to hire me, I refuse flat out. One, I don't like being forced. Two, the job requires leaving the dome. Three, the package is a sun-sick kid. Half-human, half-phoenix and I'm supposed to take him back to his phoenix family. Oh hell no!

But the client reveals he knows my secret, blackmailing me into a job I don't want with stakes that grow higher each day.

I have to take the kid straight through the Dragon Lord's territory. Everyone knows that's suicide. Coming face to face with the dominant, sexy Dragon Lord reveals the truth about my heritage and puts me in more danger than I knew existed.

Lord it Over Me

This is another good Kindle Unlimited find and gladly I can go straight on to the next book. Mia is a likable independent woman who discovers a lot more than the Dragon Lord. A great light read with a good innovative plot fitting for a good new urban fantasy.

Dragon Lord begins when Mia is forced to take a job transporting a child to the Phoenix territory, but in order to get there she must travel outside of the dome, and through the Dragon's territory. Things get really complicated for her when the dragons catch her, and it is up to her to figure out what the next plan should be.

This book started off really good. It had a very interesting story line, and engaging kickass heroine. The problem with it was about 60% into the book it felt very rushed, and the whole story just sort of dimmed somewhat. It just wasn't as good as the first half of it. It was still very interesting, but it could have been better. I wouldn't mind reading more in this series, but I was hoping for more from this one.

Mia (h), a skilled transporter reluctantly accepts a dangerous assignment: delivering a sun-sick child, half-human and half-phoenix, to his family, in a world where humans reside in protective domes and dragons and phoenixes wage war. Mia's task becomes even more perilous when she realizes she must venture into Dragon Lord Ashur's (H) territory, a place she can't afford to be seen. As she navigates the treacherous landscape, her client's knowledge of her closely guarded secret adds an extra layer of tension. Failure could cost Mia everything, including her life. She struggles to balance her identity and her mission, even as her growing relationship with Ashur adds a touch of romance. The book ends on a satisfying note, though Mia's journey is far from over.

This started off strong and then descended into bad.

Here are my issues:

1. Insta-Lust 🤮

2. Time frames making no sense. We went from having time frames of 2 - 3 weeks to the heroine getting things done in mere days...super confusing.

3. One dimensional characters.

4. Instant conflict resolution. Boyfriend is super rich, handsome and strong. Kicks asses, bribes people, solves all World’s problems with his money. blah...blah....blah

5. Throw plot twists in from nowhere (really no build-up) and bam we have a cliffhanger.

Dragon

A solid 4 stars. Mia was a character you could relate to, support and defend. Of course you would want her in any that happened . She's bada$$.

Interesting

This was a good start. I see a great storyline and the heroine kicks butt. The characters are cool and I like the scene that's set up.

Dragons and Phoenixes and Humans, oh my!

What happens when you take two of my favorite creatures of myth, toss in a polluted fairly dystopia Earth and toss in some smexy times?

Apparently a new to me series that I tore through. The first 10% is quick, engaging and fun. While it does suffer from a bit too much awkwardly placed exposition at first, the story revs up and dives straight into the action.

Mia is a classic UF heroine - resourceful, snarky and quite aware her secrets will one day get her killed. I appreciated that despite all things, at her core she was a realist.

Ashur is...smoking hot. A sizzling hunky feast. (He makes dragon related puns like he's auditioning for Best Dad Joke Ever) He doesn't quite come off as intimidating, helped largely by the fact he's at pains to convince Mia he's got her (and Omari's) best interests at heart.

While the twist was less of a twist when you read enough books with a similar trope, I appreciated that a few things were surprisingly presented.

Overall, a good start to a series I'm already downloading to read more of.

What could be better than two of my favourite mythical creature in one book and a kickass heroine?

This was a great read. The main characters seemed pretty self assured and confident. The ending wasn't that big of a shock, I already suspected it. However it was a nice ending.

Mia is not quite as human as she wants her fellow dome dwellers to think she is. With a mixed heritage of human, Phoenix and Dragon, she is living under the radar and trying to grow her courier business. With Earth pretty much irradiated, the Dragons and Phoenixes live outside the Domes and the humans leave them to it.

Mia is blackmailed into taking a fellow mixed heritage child to his Phoenix family. But to do so she has to go through Dragon territory. When she and her young charge are given "hospitality" by the stated Dragon lord, she gets more than she bargained for! He may just be her mate.

Dragon Lord Ashur is a fair but fierce ruler. He looks after his Skein well and doesn't know what to make of the feisty female who has landed in his home. But as they spend more time together he realises she is his mate, but how will she react to his declarations!

This was a great read. Mia is independent, strong and capable. Ashur is Alpha, muscled and used to getting what he wants. Add in convoluted family dynamics, Machiavellian parents and a cute as a button kid and you have yourself a winner! My only grumble was it kind of ended on happy for now rather then HEA. Roll on book 2.

The author has a decent writing style, which would have normally given them at least a 4 in my book. Unfortunately, the author DIDN'T DO ANY RESEARCH! Dear Lord, if you're going to have a scientific apocalypse, please do your research. The Apocalypse in this book would be credible if the author had based it off of an atomic war. Not pollution. Because plants thrive on CO2. It's quite literally elementary school science. If there were a situation in which the ozone layer was completely eliminated, then there would be no atmosphere - not poison air and radiation, but NO air and radiation. Additionally, the cities under the domes, if such a thing came to pass, would have to become their own farms, which makes a high density population near impossible, especially with the way the author structured the city. Plus, if the civilization at the time of this disaster was advanced enough, they would know that they would simply have to increase the amount of photosynthesis occuring on the planet at any point in time by a certain variable to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air and increase the amount of O3 in the air (this is more high School chemistry, so I can almost give the author a pass). I'm seriously considering downgrading my rating even more, because good authors do their research.

I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.

This book has a To Be Continued ending. I felt like there could have been a bit better of a conclusion for this story, as it was it felt a little too abrupt for my taste. The flow up to that point was good, but then it was a rush at the end just to have something that didn't feel like a conclusion.

The setup and world-building was certainly interesting. I felt like there was just enough to make this story unique, though a tad predictable at times (no matter how "surprised" the characters seemed to be). I really liked Ashur and I wish we got to see his perspective on the story. Mia I took a bit longer to warm-up to, but by the end she had grown on me.

Two stars

I feel like there are too many good kindle books to keep reading books about girls that have no character traits other than sadness and a reluctance to falling in love. It's hard to care about a story when the main character had no thoughts or opinions, nor even in a feminist way, but in just a "How can a person like this exist?" way.

A good idea but could have been executed better. Too short to really let you invest in the characters and 'lust at first sight' was a bummer too.

I wanted to love this book. I really did. However, it just did not happen for me. I loved the concept of phoenixes and dragons (I mean who doesn't love dragons?) but the book just fell short.

There were few issues for me in this book. Mostly, it was the build up to the main part of the story. It took forever. There was way too much fluff going on up to 50% of the book. Seriously. It took a long time for the book to come to the purpose of it all.

Another thing was the world building. The world Mia lives in is a mess. However, there just wasn't enough backstory or reasoning/explanation to that world. We have dragons, phoenix and humans living separate lives. The story came in the middle of the book and that too just a few lines. While the situation was unique enough the explanation was just abrupt and it felt more like a last minute thought - oh let's make this the reason for the post apocalyptic back story. For me, there lacked the connection I wanted to feel towards the world.

I also felt no connection to the main characters. The book starts off with a lot of telling instead of showing. Mia (our MC) lives alone and is a transporter. Due to her unique situation she has chosen to live alone and work alone. However, she has one friend Jacob who she cares for. But, we never got to "see" the connection between Jacob and Mia or why I should care for Jacob as a friend. We were told how Jacob came to be and may have helped Mia couple times but never shown. That to me just lost that connection. I had no idea what to make of him. Even when we "met" Jacob for a brief moment I could not feel anything. Later, we meet Ashur, the dragon lord, and while we got to "see" little bit of him even then I could not feel anything for either Mia or Ashur together. I mean, there's supposed to be an attraction and connection between Ashur and Mia - I did not "feel" the connection. To me it just all felt forced for lack of a better term. And it is hard to love a book when you don't really care a whole lot about the main characters. There is no love declaration or anything. However, there is sex scene in case anyone is wondering.

I did like the action scenes.

I'm not sure if I will continue with the series. I mean I would like to know and it is free via KU. So maybe.

I (unexpectedly?) liked this a lot.
It took a while for the "mission" mentioned in the description to actually become a thing since the first 10 % were just about another job Mia was completing. That was good to show off her competence and badassness from the get-go but I felt it took too long because I wanted to get to the main story already. So it didn't grip me right away.

Still, the book is definitely well written, and Mia's inner musings and assesments of things reminded me of Kate from the Kate Daniels series sometimes, though this was not comparable to Ilona Andrews by any means, of course.
I really liked Omari, the little sun-sick boy, he was adorable, and Ashur, the Dragon Lord, was certainly something as well. However, as much as I rooted for them, it was a bit weird to have them make out at their fourth encounter already.
And it irked me that Mia's outer apperance was only described after 60 % had passed. The only thing we knew before was that her hair is dark.

I was delighted about the gasp-worthy revelations in the end even though some things didn't quite make sense to me, not completely.

I'm very curious about the next book now but very miffed at discovering that only the first installment is available in print. As a rule, I only read books that actually exist as physical books (which are my preference) even though I read e-books too. I guess I'll read the sequels without counting them as books, more like as novellas since they are also shorter than this one.

So, post-apocalyptic world. Humans live in domestic because the sun is too hot and the air is too dirty. The dragons and phoenixes live in the rest of the world because they aren't bothered by the heat. Of course, the dragons fight amongst themselves, the dragons and phoenixes fight each other, nobody likes the humans and they don't like either of the other groups. Think Crips, Bloods, everyone else.

Mia lives in one of the domed cities. She is a carrier of goods for anyone who can afford to pay her. No, she doesn't have a fancy car. But she does have something to hide besides her occupation. Someone who wants her to deliver something outside the dome learns her secret. The next thing she knows, she is attempting to deliver a young phoenix to his relatives on the outside. If that isn't enough, she has to go through dragon territory to do it. Needless to say, it doesn't work out. Now she is a 'guest' of a dragon lord. It seems that her mother forgot to tell her a few things when she insisted that Mia never try to stay outside the dome for an extended period. Will she be able to complete her commission or will she be too distracted by an impressive dragon shifter and what she learns about her genetics? This was a bit slow in the beginning but when it took off I was held captivated right up to the slight cliffhanger at the end which has you chomping at the bit to see whats next. Mia Hill lives in the Dome City after the Ozone Layer is gone and only the Dragons and Phoenix’s can go outside but with her job as a courier all is well but now she is given a job that she cannot refuse has her leaving the dome city witty a young boy Omari who is half human and half phoenix and she must take him home to his parents in Phoenix territory/ dome but to get there quickly she cuts through the Dragon Lords territory and when the Dragons scent her as one of there own the DRagon Lord Ashur Jah who she has an instant connection with and a few steamy times and when Ashur asks her to stay she tells him no because her goal is to finish the job and keep Omari safe. Ashur Jah is the Dragon Lord and you take your life into your hands if you cross into his territory but Mia doesn’t have a choice but when he meets he sexy female there connection and attraction is off the charts and he sexy fun they have and the banter between them had me laughing out loud when he calls her a fancy dragon but there is so much more going on in this book and the secrets that will come out on the adventures she has while taking Omari home.

Humans now live in domes because the sun would cook them from lack of an ozone layer, and the air isn’t breathable for them. Phoenixes and dragons (shifters) can do both outside and need the sun to keep them healthy. Mia Hill is a one-woman delivery service. Her neighbor Jacob, tries to keep her safe on the more worrisome deliveries but every time he goes- it just escalates faster because- men! So after a delivery goes horribly wrong, she finds another potential client in her office afterwards. He forces her to go on the delivery he wants because she has a really big secret.

Omari, is a 6 year old phoenix human hybrid she must deliver to the phoenix people. He looks very sickly as he hasn’t been outside for a while. He needs sunlight more as a child. Poor baby wakes from a nightmare while they are crossing dragon land and they get captured. Ashur and his people aren’t bad, but a lot of stuff happens there. Mia is drawn to Ashur. All is revealed and it is a doozy. Her secret was not what I was expecting and boy can she fight with bow and arrow! I was impressed. Omari is adorable.

I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait for the next book.

Exciting series starter

The gutsy independent courier from the overcrowded slums is more than she seems to be. Mia ekes out her living as a delivery service operator in the dome, one of the last human refuges on a devastated, ecologically wrecked Earth. Outside is barren, toxic, radiation poisoned death. But when she is blackmailed into taking a delivery job outside of the dome she finds out a few things about herself that she never suspected. To deliver her "package" she must enter the territories of both the dragons and the phoenixes - the two warring species whose emergence post-eco collapse decimated their own, and humanity's populations to near extinction. This is a superb post-apocalyptic fantasy romance. It's full of adventure, danger, and surprise twists. The world building is vividly descriptive and lusciously detailed. Better still a is the character development; Mia in particular stands out with her stubborn independent streak, her sense of irony, and her pithy, honest self-talk. There is only one downside here: the dreaded cliffhanger. Fear not! There is a remedy. Book 2 in the series is immediately available. This is essential for binge readers like me, and so I will happily read on.

Mia

Earth is a mess, humans live in a protective dome. While dragons and phoenixes can live outside of it in the sunlight without getting radiation burns.
Mia lives a dangerous life. She delivers items for money. She isn't picky about what it is as long as it isn't alive or outside of the human dome and she gets paid for it. She works for shady employers most of the time.
She comes to her office to find a man there who wants to hire her to take a package outside the dome. She tries to refuse but he blackmails her. When she goes to pick up the package she finds out that it is a six year old boy who is half Phoenix. She needs to deliver him to his family.
There are other people involved in this story; her neighbor Jacob an ex mercenary now baker, a whole skein of dragons including her lover, Dragon Lord Ashur, a Phoenix King, slave traders and a grandmother. This is an exciting adventure to partake of.
While I enjoyed the book, I personally wished I would have waited til the next book came out which is a continuing of what happens with Mia's life. I like reading about the same character all at once, but I would still totally recommend this book.

So my review will really reflect those readers who have a similar desire of mine: I loved this book and the storyline but I don't want to read graphic sex scenes in a book. I was reading along the story and thoroughly enjoying the book. I planned to give it 5 stars! And then I hit the first sex scene and I thought "okay, not too bad. I can keep going to see how this plays out!" Then I got to the second and much more graphic sex. I know that there are a lot of readers that don't particularly care one way or another. There are other readers who enjoy a good romance book! But I just didn't think the story needed it! She had great chemistry, the story had me invested and I enjoyed her characters but I don't want to read a steamy book! It ruined it for me so I gave the book a 2 star rating. If you are okay with steamy sex scenes, then you'll like this one. But I know I have friends who follow my book reads and I want to give them a heads up.

Mia is a transporter in one of the human dome cities that was created after the world was destroyed by pollution. No one goes beyond the dome unless they want to face radiation, dragons, and phoenixes. But Mia isn’t fully human and her secret trips outside the dome have been discovered. She is blackmailed in to delivering a package outside the dome that requires her to go through dragon territory. But the package ends up being a sun sick little boy who gets them captured as soon as they cross into dragon land. This was an interesting take on dragons and phoenix. I liked the world building and road to discovery that Mia takes to uncover her heritage. The relationship was a little too insta-love for me along with a few other convenient aspects but I’m interested in finding out where she ends up after the discoveries made about who her parents are.

Undecided

Everything moves so quickly in this book it's hard to decide what to think if it, one there's a setting with so many nuances that it ought to be treated as a character in and of itself, though it isn't. Then you've got three societies of unfamiliar and underexplained rules. Plus the large cast of characters that come and go so fast it's like whiplash. The connection between the characters is quick though fortunately there is at least no mention of love which I definitely give the writers bonus point for. The action scenes are well written and intense but in a way it was a bit like a movie where it jumps from action scene to action scene without much down time to take it all in so, yeah not really sure what I think.

Good basis, needs a bit more

I like that the story started with Mia on another job that way you get to see how she is on a normal delivery job. I liked Mia at the beginning. She's tough, self-reliant and she's good in tricky situations. The things I have a problem with are that she befriends people way too fast. I get Omari because he's just a little kid but the rest she should have been more wary of. I get that this is a paranormal fantasy book but Ashur is way too clingy. Like unless Mia is his mate or something, it's creepy to be that clingy. Also having sexy times when they should have been more focused on the welfare of a child was a little off-putting. I'm hoping the next one will be better.
