They say that sometimes dreams really do come true, but Gail Filipovic was never a big dreamer. A quiet life in Texas, finally working for a legitimate company with a real job – instead of moonlighting for the mob - is all she really needed. OK, this particular slice of American Pie came with a side order of witness protection program and some unexplained scars, but for once, Gail is in control.
Until a handsome stranger rolls into town that is. Jonathan Dean has a past shrouded in mystery, and a mission to protect the very same company that now employs Gail. He seems like a character straight out of those vampire romances she loves to read, but Gail knows those stories aren’t real. Vampires are not real . . .
So why does she have to repeat this mantra every night, and why didn’t she notice that quirky janitor before?
R. E. Carr likes to split her time between the alien (well, resident alien) she married, her two adorable offspring and the vast army of characters who constantly argue in her brain. She uses her past life as a video game reviewer to remind herself just how awesome it is to be writing novels now.
Rachel writes because she knows so many people and places that never quite made it into this version of the universe. It's her duty to let them out. Writing also gives her mind a certain peace and calm rarely felt in this multi-tasking, wired world.
I got to say, I was surprised to revisit Gail Filipovic. I remembered her vaguely and was mildly curious about what happened to her, but my initial reaction was, “Gail?! Nooo! What happens to the other characters?” I put on my big girl panties and continued reading and am glad I did. I came to care about Gail and root for her. Each of the Rules Undying Books has engaged me and I am wildly curious to see what happens next. I look forward to the next addition to the series.
This book was really good. I love the way she has it set up for vamps and werewolves in this world. I also love the plots within plots going on here.It seems just as you think you have a good idea of what is going on you are shown ... that nope ... that wasn't it! Gosh just look at Gail's story for one. I'm not liking the "fox" and I really want to know what happens with JD.... Wow at what Ren's mom went and did too. There is just so much going on in this series it is hard to pick just one plot lines to follow. I will say though that my first love was Georgia and Ren. I can't wait to see what she does to them next. The last book made me want to cry.
This is one of those books where we take a character that we learned to hate in a prior installment and switch POVs to understand their backstory and motivation. We start off know this is about Gail and boy are we surprised to find out hat we really do like her. We meet more characters that we've heard of but haven't met and the story is off barreling through their lives and wreaking havoc. Well done!
Remember Gail from 4? The Rules Undying Book 1? Thought sh'd gone away, destroyed by the Sherriff and Mr Sugar? Not likely. Here we meet her again, only this time she thinks she has an idea that Vampres exist. But everytime she gets close to glimpsing the truth, something in the corner of her eye distracts her and its gone. To add to her troubles she feels attracted to 2 men. I mean WTF? And they couldnt be anymore different. Her job is research, but she's not sure what she's researching, only that involves a lot of bloodwork, and more security than seems absolutely necessary. She also thinks her boss's name, Matsuoko, is very familiar, but cant think why. Gail Filipovic is a wonderful and startingly original creation by Ms Carr. A true addition to her universe of strong and forceful female characters. As always with Ms Carr, keep reading to the end, the unseen (almost) twist is still there and will knock your socks off.
