As the white tents rise for the Hamilton Family's annual Memorial Day party in East Hampton, NY the skeletons they had hoped would stay in closets shrouded by designer labels have no intention of sitting this one out. It is then that each generation has a tale to tell. Bitter divorce, crippling heartbreak, secret love, and the elusiveness of last love. Mother, Father, Sister, Brother weave in and out of one another as they navigate the most un-idyllic summer to accept the fact that some mazes are inescapable and that the term romance is synonymous with modern warfare.

From the time of its inception, Emerald Mazes has taken me on a emotional roller coaster ride. While reading this book I kept putting off finishing it because to be totally honest with you, I did not want it to come to an end. M.C. Finch creates such a rich environment that sucks you in from the very beginning. Finch makes it so effortless to relate to the characters and grow attached to them, carrying them with you well after you finish reading the book.

I remember reading this book and asking a million questions. What is Blake going to do? What the hell is Andrea doing? Why did Ivy do that? Why didn't Andrew do that? One night, I got drunk before going out for a girl's night and ended up asking M.C. Finch every question I could come up with, which resulted in a crying Kayla (Me), and a prolonged procrastination for finishing it, as I had a feeling that I would be heartbroken.

Andrea Hamilton, who is the main character was my personal favorite to read about. Blake, who is romantically involved with Andrea was my second favorite; I have such a love/hate relationship with his character that it drives me a little mad. While I can't tell you why I feel that way, I can tell you that Emerald Mazes yields such a different outcome than any other book I've read.

During the journey of reading this book I felt so many emotions. The thing that is so special about this book is that Finch's personality shines through each and every character, as if they all possess a piece of him. Emerald Mazes is so relatable yet so far removed from anything any normal person would ever experience; it takes pure talent to accomplish a feat like that.

Finch's voice is fresh, clear, and exciting throughout the entire story. I absolutely love the way he uses narrative within Emerald Mazes that flows so smoothly you feel like you are apart of the conversation, rather than reading a book. If you are in search of a book that has it all: scandal, lies, heartbreaks, complex family dynamics, dramatic situations, as well as the most genuine heartfelt moments, I suggest you pick up Emerald Mazes. While I anxiously await the sequel, I will continue to cherish the story of these eccentric characters that reside in The Hamptons.
