When DI Donna Davenport is called out to investigate a body washed up on Arbroath beach, it looks like a routine murder inquiry. Then the enquiry take on a more sinister form.
There are similarities with a previous murder, and now a woman connected to them both has gone missing too. For Donna, this is becoming personal, and with the added pressure of feeling watched at every turn, she is convinced that Jonas Evanton has returned to seek his revenge on her for his downfall.
Fearing they may be looking for a serial killer, Donna and her new team are taken in a horrifying and unexpected direction. Because it’s not a serial killer – it’s worse.
Moving from Dundee to the south coast of Turkey and the Syrian border, this is a fast paced novel about those who live their lives in the shadows, and those who exploit them.
I enjoyed this more than Toxic, the first book in the series. This is the second, and there's more character development and exploring of relationships, and less graphic violence, which suited me better. There's a good murder mystery that sets the pace of the first two-thirds of the book, and then the trail leads overseas and it becomes more of a Boy's Own (well, Girl's Own) adventure than a police procedural. In the background there's suspense connected to the events of Toxic, with little unnerving touches like a rose left on a pillow in a supposedly empty house.
As with Toxic, the book also touches on serious issues of social justice, but this time closer to home than the Bhopal disaster. It feels topical and relevant without being preachy.
A fine follow up to Toxic. Enjoyed the development of the characters, the setting and sense of place, not to mention the suspense. Looking forward to the next one ...
I've been waiting for this sequel ever since I finished Toxic, and it did not disappoint. Believable, "normal" characters - a heroine in Donna Davenport who is "warts and all" and all the more likeable for it. Well written relationships and such a powerful story. I enjoy books where they follow on from the events of the previous one and this is most definitely a sequel. A powerful story, good character involvement and a huge twist at the end. I did not see that coming and I just hope the next book is on its way! I could see these books making a great TV drama series.
