Even though the doors to Heaven and Hell are locked, there’s enough evil on Earth to keep Spawn busy. But without his full powers, Spawn will have to find a way to fight his enemies without getting himself killed…again. With art by fellow Image founder, ERIK LARSEN (issues #263-266) and veteran SPAWN artist, SZYMON KUDRANSKI (issues #267-275), this 12-issue trade paperback ushers SPAWN into a bold new era.
Todd McFarlane is a Canadian comic book artist, writer, toy manufacturer/designer, and media entrepreneur who is best known as the creator of the epic occult fantasy series Spawn.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was one of America's most popular heroes in the 1990's and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.
In recent years, McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio.
In September, 2006, it was announced that McFarlane will be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by Curt Schilling.
McFarlane used to be co-owner of National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers but sold his shares to Daryl Katz. He's also a high-profile collector of history-making baseballs.
Good. So I have been collecting Spawn ever since Al Simmons came back and I have been enjoying it for the most part. So our story kicks off right after the previous volume left off(Spoilers for that coming), Al Simmons went to hell to save Wanda but he couldn't so he traded in his suit for her to have safe passage to heaven, only to break off a piece and rig the main suit to explode. Now with the gates to Heaven and Hell closed, all the demons and angels are stuck on Earth with Spawn! Spawn has to now continue his one man war on evil, but with a suit that has a fraction of the powers he used to have! Now Al has to fulfil a promise made to Wanda; so he now has to play bodyguard for her family.
So first off the positives, I loved the art which was done by various artists; the first section of the trade is a bit more shaded and dark with its colouring, while the second half the colouring is a bit brighter. I also liked the concept of Al having only a fraction of his powers and needing to rely on his skills as a mercenary more. Also provides a proper reason for him to be using guns. This trade also I will say is a lot more story heavy then previous volumes and the fact that this is 12 issues and only $18 is fantastic!
The volume does sadly fail a little in execution. While I do like the concept of Spawn being depowered and him fighting evil the old fashioned way, it wasn't really executed well. The fight scenes are cool, but very bland compared to previous volumes like the last one where an entire issue is just Spawn ripping apart and killing demons. I know there is a reason for that with Spawn being depowered, but I just overall thought it could of had better execution. The story, while a lot more of it which I do appreciate(Since the last couple of volumes were more action then story), it is very much on the okay side, nothing that's gonna blow you away really. You'd think since its twelve issues it would be 3 maybe 4 arcs, but not really here. Pretty much the whole trade is Al being a bodyguard (one continuous arc), while that's cool, I just wish something would happen in between, something to diverge your attention and take a break from the main story. There is a issue where Spawn does a crossover with Savage Dragon, which was cool, only problem is this trade only collects the Spawn issue, the second half continues in Savage Dragon(which I had to go read separately). This trade does already collect a lot, so its a minor gripe, but ya next time they do that they need to include the other issue, since its only one extra. It was a fun crossover though.
Overall though, I enjoyed this volume, but it wasn't really as fun as the previous volumes. I do recommend this though since you get a lot for your buck, but if you haven't you'll need to go read the last two volumes first.

I like Spawn best when it's more horror than superhero, and this arc was more horror. Plus Sam and Twitch show up. Spawn has basically trapped both Angels and Demons on Earth, and they are both not happy about it. There's also some weirdness going on with Cyan that hasn't fully been explained yet.
Overall a good story line with solid art that I think sets up the next story arc well.
I did enjoy these issues a lot in this paperback and I also dig the idea of Spawn being human again making things more risky (Even though they did before in the older issues). There are some stuff in this story line that I wish was done much better in my opinion. I still like how every issue made me want to keep on reading to see what happens next. The last issue of this collection really had me wonder where will the story go next. This is worth checking out for fans of the series.
So Spawn has returned from Hell with only a fraction of his powers. He promised Wanda he'd watch over her family. Erik Larsen writes and draws the first several issues so this turns into more of a superhero comic with some of his characters from Savage Dragon. It's goofier, like his stuff can be. Of course the story ends in Savage Dragon and isn't included here just leaving you hanging. It's frustrating for sure to only collect part of the story.
Then McFarlane and Kudranski return and the book gets darker again. Cyan is now 14. She's in a rehab facility and gaining powers like Spawn's. There's this creepy serial killer running around too. I liked this 2nd half much better.
