Librarian's Note: This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN B0769FWNP7
It's not pretend when feelings get involved...
As a veteran defenseman for the Newport Beach Seagulls, I know what it’s like to protect. Protect my net. Protect the puck. Protect my team.
I’m not even above throwing my gloves off if I need to in order to send a message to the other team.
My neighbor is a completely different story.
Chloe Summers keeps to herself and minds her own business. She’s cute in that sexy librarian sort of way but I’ve never made a move. See, I like to keep to myself too. And relationship is not a word in my vocabulary.
But then I find out that she’s in trouble.
My protective instinct kicks in.
I tell her I’ll pretend to be her boyfriend in order to keep her from harm.
And then I realize she’s so much more than a sexy librarian. I want her, nearly as much as I want the Stanley Cup.
And I’m so close to both, I can’t f*cking take it.
-
The flowers all over my porch.
That was the first sign that he found me. After years of hiding, he found me.
I shouldn’t be surprised. He has money, he has charm, he’s even attractive.
But he’s been my nightmare for five years.
It’s why I don’t date. I don’t have many friends. I don’t even say hi to my gorgeous if stoic neighbor. I know he plays for the NHL. He’s probably just looking for some privacy.
But then, Art Jackman gets involved. It’s not his choice. And I sure don’t want him to know these things. Now, he does and I can’t hide who I am anymore.
When he gives me an offer I can’t refuse, I get to know Art more and I realize he’s not just gorgeous, he’s everything I want.
But will he even want me with my past finally catching up to me?
Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I'm a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says 'like' more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I'm a 23 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I'm a writer. Like, for real.
I enjoyed the storyline, but could not get past the constant switch between 1st pov and 3rd, sometimes within the same sentence. Plus the spelling errors. This book could be good, but desperately needs an editor to help with basic things like this and then help refine some of the language so it's not so repetitive. Good plot though, potential is there.
I read this a couple of weeks ago and forgot to review..I did enjoy this book, poor Chloe had gotten out of a horrible relationship and since he was rich and his family could get him out of trouble she ran and ends up living next to Art. Art sees the reaction that Chloe got when she received Roses and he knew that something was not right and for some reason Chloe brought out the protective Alpha in him. He convinces her to pretend that they are in a relationship so that her ex would leave her alone, while on this fake relationship it turns real and he comes thru for her and her for him she was just what he needed..

Neighbour To The Rescue! This is book 6 in the series Slapshot Series by Heather C. Myers. In this book we are introduced to Art who is in the NFL and a very successful player who is happy in his life, has enough money and friends and female company when he wants but he avoids relationships. His sexy next door neighbour, Chloe is real eye candy for him. He thinks she is one sexy librarian and gorgeous to boot but she is obvious relationship material so he avoids her. Chloe has notice Art but she avoids people and has few friends because she's in hiding from her abusive ex boyfriend. But he's wealthy and has obviously found her because it all started with her porch being covered in flowers. Poor Chloe is terrified and doesn't know what to do. But Art, whilst trying to avoid her, can't help but notice that there is something wrong and he goes to find out. When he finds out out about her ex he feels very protective of her and offers to pretend to be her boyfriend! Heather C. Myers has created such a great storyline here and her two main characters are so fitting for each other. Art is so amiable and charming as well as very handsome and gorgeous and Chloe is such a strong young woman who has had to be so strong for such a long time and has had no one to share the burden with her. once she shares with him about her stalker they grow closer until what started out as a fake relationship becomes so real. This issue of stalking and abuse within a relationship are such sensitive issues but I think that Heather did a really good job of addressing the issue although I wasn't sure whether Tim, the ex, did get sufficient 'punishment' for his abuse. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED
"The bastard was as old as I was, but he was a charmer and girls as young as eighteen, nineteen, would flock to him and drop to their knees just to please him."
Major creep vibes from this Dean guy and it's only mentioned in passing. Is this meant to make me want to read his book? 100% pass. I only read this book because of TikTok and that was my mistake. Lots of mistakes, the author constantly switched between the 1st/3rd person sometimes within a single sentence. It was so annoying. I only kept reading cause the story is like 150 pages and it kept me busy during my commute. Won't read any other book from this series and CERTAINLY won't read Dean's. The fact that I can't think to say anything about the actual plot says a lot about this book itself, I think.
Honestly, nothing in this story stands out. Except for the fact that the main guy calls the main girl "kid". What's with this? Does the author have some weird fetish where guys infantilise her? Find one woman who thinks being called "kid" by the guy she likes is a good thing, a sexy thing, a fun thing? "Kid" is what my grampa calls me. "Kid" is what adults in my life used to call me when I was a literal child. "Kid" is what I call my nephew. If a guy I'm interested in ever calls me kid I'll take that as his way of showing me he'll never be interested in me. If he ever does show interest in me and keeps calling me kid, I'm taking that as a serious red flag and running away. Number 1 it's creepy. Number 2 it's demeaning.
Edit for myself about the Dean thing: I just want to say, I get it, they're legally of age, but the fact that those young ages are specifically mentioned as if it's a good, charming thing is creepy. I can get behind age gap romance (in fact I've read a fair few and enjoyed them when in the right context), but this sounds more like the dude intentionally targets young girls who are probably too young to know better (despite what they may think) into sleeping with him. He "charms/manipulates" them for a quick fuck and it's framed as "Oh he's just heartbroken from a past relationship, so it's okay". Dude. Grow the feck up. You're an adult. You're the only reason behind your own heartbreak. You left her. (Not to mention his heartbreak is from when he was like 29? And it's mentioned the girl he loved was 10 years younger than him...? So is he bordering on being a predator? Or is that just his kink to be with young girls... which could still make him a predator?)
Sorry if you think I'm overly sensitive but everyone has their own triggers and this is apparently mine. (Since I'm not reading his book, I don't even know if this is the case or just a weird fixation from the author or if it's talked about at all. But I doubt it. This was probs just a stupid throwaway line that was meant to intrigue us for his story. We're not meant to be weirded out by the 30+ year-old who sleeps with just-graduated high school girls).

This is intense, dramatic, suspenseful and romantic. Art is tough, determined, unsure and unknowingly romantic. Chloe is brave, vulnerable, stubborn and a survivor. Chloe ran from an abusive man 3 years before and thought that she was rid of him. Until she came home one day to find roses all over her porch. Art happened to see how she reacted and was concerned. The next day, when she got to work, she found more roses at her desk. Nervous about her ex finding her, she went home. Art knew she shouldn't be home, and he went to check on her. He found her a mess, and didn't feel right just walking away. While they were dancing around the issue the ex showed up at her door and began to try intimidating her. She told him to give away, and he laughed, then starting to threaten her. When Art finally decided that he'd heard enough he opened the door, and after a few minutes told the ex that he was with Chloe. After the ex left Art asked her to pretend to be with him so he could protect her, she agreed, and with a couple of days it wasn't fake anymore. Unfortunately the ex didn't stay away, he caused all kinds of problems, but Art remained determined to protect her. He's very sweet about it too. I love this series, every storyline and every character is different, but they're all great. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Chloe has been hiding from an abusive ex-boyfriend for years. She has changed her name, moved to the opposite side of the country and given up all of her friends just to be safe. Her sense of safety disappears when she comes home from work to find red roses scattered on her porch.
Art lives across the street from Chloe and is a veteran hockey player who has just joined the Newport Beach Seagulls. He and the team have are in contention for the Stanley Cup. So when his cute neighbor starts acting odd, Art hesitates getting involved because he wants to focus on winning the cup. Art is visiting Chloe when her abusive ex-boyfriend shows up and threatens Chloe. Art intervenes, saying that he is Chloe's boyfriend, thinking that will scare the guy off. After Chloe explains what happened in the past, Art gets protective and says he is now her pretend boyfriend. Both Chloe and Art are surprised by their compatibility. Art has to rethink his no relationship rule. As Chloe's stalker escalates the attempts to harm her, Art finds that he is no longer pretending that Chloe is his girlfriend.
I have read books by Heather C. Myers in the past and I enjoy her style of writing. The characters are well defined and the interaction of the characters is realistic. I am sure that I will be reading more books by Ms. Myers in the future.

Oh God, I now have another favourite player from this series, and it's ART JACKMAN!
I absolutely loved, loved, LOVED him. And the cameo Dean played in this book, setting the scene for his upcoming second-chance, HOT romance. I also adored Chloe; she was sweet, clumsy, and cute. But Art? Oh, he has my heart (along with Dean Morgan, James Negan, and Alec Schumacher).
Two of my absolute favourite lines from this book, and you may notice they're both from Art's POV because I love him so much:
He was trying to see what he could get away with. If it made him feel better, Art would give him the first three punches. He was certain Tim wouldn’t move him. Couldn’t hurt a hair on his body. He also knew he could punch Tim in the face without using the full extent of his force and it would send the scrawny piece of shit flying backward. Art’s knuckles wouldn’t even be damaged because of it, which meant it wouldn’t hinder his game.
His grip on the door tightened. He was this close to ripping the door from its hinges and swiping this fucker with it. Breaking his teeth. Watching the ivory bounce across the concrete.
This sixth book in the Slapshot series is a fake romance, but it's a bit different than most. Art and Chloe aren't in it for money, fame, or any of the other selfish reasons for this type of romance. We've seen abuse before in this series, but this one gets a bit more up close and personal. Chloe's fear and worry from the moment she realizes that her abusive ex has found her so well done that it's almost palpable. Of course, the sexy Art comes to the rescue and their fake romance quickly starts to become something more. In spite of her fear and the dark elements of the story, Chloe has quite the bubbly personality and the stoic and protective Art is absolutely perfect for her. There are some parts of the story that are shocking and hard to read, but at the end of the darkness, there is hope and love. While this one is part of a series, it works well as a standalone, but there are so many great characters in the Slapshot novels, that I can easily recommend the whole series. Art and Chloe's romance is a solid addition to the series and is a compelling and entertaining read.
Another Must Read In This Fantastic Series. Trainwrecks & Back Checks - Book 6 in The Slapshot Series, by author, Heather C. Myers is such a fantastic sports/romance story. Art, an Enforcer morning for the Gulls and Chloe, his neighbor who relocated because of an abusive ex-boyfriend, Tim. The author did a great job using roses to bring Art, Chloe, and Tim together. They brought Art and Chloe living together and Tim to escalate his sociopathic behavior. By living together and being around a different type of women, it gave Art a different perspective and feelings. Cheers to the author for keeping her love of hockey having such a positive influence in this series. Even though I grew up loving hockey (yes I met Gordy Howe), this series should be enjoyable for everyone. Definitely recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. I am leaving this review for your consideration. Peace.
Chloe lives next door to a sexy hot man and she only knows in passing somewhat. However when her ex shows up and causes trouble her neighbor steps in to help and claims to be her boyfriend. Art wants to focus on his career especially since his team is up for The Stanley Cup but his cute neighbor is a bit distracting. Yet he couldn't stop himself from going to her when he saw the guy harassing her. Sparks fly between them the moment they meet and Art is about to toss his no relationships rule and claim Chloe for his own. Will Chloe break free of her abusive ex? Will Art stake his claim on Chloe?
This is a great story and once I started it I couldn't put it down. The chemistry between them is blazing hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Over 3 prequels and 6 books (I'm not really a "hockey" person) I've fallen in love with the Slapshot group of characters. The tenth in a series on the Newport Gulls hockey team, Trainwrecks & Back Checks is a romance seasoned with a flavor of hockey, now I read romantic suspense and some romance, but these books stand alone and I don't know how to categorize them. This is a very good, well-written book, maybe her best work to date. I can't help but be amazed by the sheer volume of good writing she can produce in multiple romance genres. *SPOILER* In this book she takes on the social issue of stalking and abuse and does it proud. I'll read more by her in the future and look forward *SPOILER* to the next Slapshot novel, YES THERE WILL BE ANOTHER! The final book, Brutal Love & Stanley Cups: Book 7 in the Slapshot Series releases spring 2018!
This is book six in the Slapshot series and we get to learn a little more about Art Jackman the veteran defense man for the Seagulls. He doesn't do relationships, his priority is everything hockey. He has a cute librarian like neighbor that gives him his space and he is good with everything until Chloe's ex finds her and she could use Art's help. Never a guy to back down, Art steps up and suggests to Chloe that they start dating to hopefully make the ex go away. As these two spend time together, get to know one another both of them realize this has become more than just a fake date. Another great read in the series where you get to know one of the Seagulls more than just a player on the ice but as a man. Also, you get to be along for the ride to see them find their lady love.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about Chloe and Art. He's an enforcer for the Gull's Hockey Team. She's a young woman who lives in a condo near him, she's quite and seems nervous. When he finds her front stoop covered in roses and her pitching them, he goes out of his way to help. Chloe is furious, her ex, Tim found her. He almost killed her before she escaped. Now she has her hot buff neighbor helping her get rid of roses. When Tim shows up to gloat, Art steps in to protect her, not sure why he feels this pull. As they work together to keep her safe, the fake relationship develops to something more. Great HEA that will keep developing in the next book. Love the characters.

rambling, repetitive, and pg rated spice (if I’m generous)
You know that weird passage of time you get in a dream. That was this book. The majority of the book was rambling internal dialogue that switched pov, often in the same sentence. The truth is I found myself skimming pages at a time to just get to the point. Add to that half the internal rambling would be repeated more than once.
There is one sex scene that lasts half a page, so if you expect spice, you won’t find it. Then, there is this freak magic resolution to the stalking of her ex boyfriend that is so unrealistic. Everyone tells her he is untouchable because he has money, but suddenly he is arrested and all her problems are gone. Seems suspect to me.
Chloe and Art may not seem like a logical pairing, but they’re quite adorable together. Her quirky sunniness reminds Art that there’s more to life than just hockey, and his alpha protective instincts are exactly what Chloe needs to realize that she’s strong enough to overcome the horror that her last relationship had become. This book contains a lot of sweet, awe-worthy moments for one that has domestic abuse as a large part of the plot. And one of the things I appreciate most is that the message I heard loudest from that part of the plot is to work through the legal system even though it’s not perfect. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
Two neighbours who have a mutual interest in each other that they won't act on. A professional hockey player who doesn't do relationships and a quiet government worker who wished she hadn't. When something literally lands on her door they both end up in a situation neither of them saw coming. Loved these two together and the mix of tension and awkwardness made it cute and believable. I had to make it through the hockey lingo and had really hoped for more details of the hook up but otherwise loved the protective alpha and his match. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 stars. Trainwrecks & Backchecks is the sixth book in the Slapshot series. While this is part of a series, it is a standalone with no cliffhanger. Though it helps to understand the story if you read the previous books. There is some violence, and not just on the ice.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. The storyline is better than average and it was a good read. I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author including more in this series.
I'm not a fan of actual hockey but I am a diehard Gulls fan!!
Art usually keeps to himself. As a veteran hockey player, his days of clubs and puck bunnies are pretty much over. He does notice his quiet, clumsy neighbor though so when she comes home to roses all over her step, he recognizes that this isn't something that makes her happy. Chloe is determined to start her life over again after a horrible relationship. She thought she was in the clear since it's been years with nothing but she's not that lucky. Until Art steps in to protect her.
This book is different from the most of the rest of series with a lot more suspense. I was on the edge of seat, biting my nails, hoping that Chloe would be ok and that Art could protect her like he promised. I couldn't put this book down. I'm sad that this series is getting ready to come to a close. I can't get enough of the Gulls!!
This is a short story that included depth of feeling between the characters and just enough conflict to keep it interesting and believable.
Everything in this story is understated. When the relationship between the two main characters moves from friends to lovers, it’s done in retrospect. There are no sex scenes, but you know the extent of each characters’ love for the other.
There are a few typos and a bit of grammar that could be better, however, it does not detract from the story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
So predictable and boring.. absolutely no steam or even really romance at all. Lots of grammar errors which drove me crazy. I bought the book because I saw that she has a crazy x and thought there might be drama.. not really the case at all. Tik tok definitely lied to me on this one. I mean I love hockey players.. and it had a girl that stands up for herself.. I love those things so it got two stars.. but that is it.. no chemistry between the characters, no humor at all.. it was just detailed with lots of things that no one cares about.
I wanted to love this book, I just couldn't. The bones were there, but it was so poorly written. I never leave bad reviews, but I actually paid for this book since it isn't on KU. Here we go. It was repetitive and hard to stay in the book. It felt like the author was just adding to it to get a word count and not add any substance to the story itself. I didn't feel any emotional connection, even though the author expained the emotions. I'm not going to make this a long rant, I just wanted/expected way more. I'm so disappointed.

A big thank you to the author for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Actually I think this is this first book I have read by her. I had no idea that this was number 6 in a series. So it reads great as a stand alone. I liked the balance and the characters. I literally know nothing about hockey and wasn't overwhelmed. A .nice romance that was fun to read. I rated it a 4. Looking forward to reading more.
Art and Chloe get their story in Trainwrecks and Back Checks. Art comes to the rescue when Chloe needs it most and fabricates a fake romance in hopes of deterring her ex. But the fake relationship quickly becomes real in this entertaining story, which was a great addition to the series.
I can't believe that the next story is the last one, but I can't wait for it as the Gulls battle for the Cup.
I received an advanced reader copy of this story and voluntarily provided this honest review.
Chloe has been hidding and running away since she left her abusive ex, she has no connections now and even if she finds Art appealing she doesn't date. Art is a bad boy in the NHL who has a sweet life who thinks Chloe is pretty in a sexy librarian way but once he learns she's in trouble he offers himself to protect her. Intenste, dramatic, suspenful and romantic.

I enjoyed this story about Chloe and Art. Loved grumpy ass Art! Poor Chloe is escaping an abusive ex so there are some heavy scenes dealing with this. I did question the methods Chloe took to go into 'hiding'. There were also many editing issues. Nothing major to affect the story line, but enough for me to pause and say what? Fairly clean romance as there was only some mild kissing scenes.

Chloe and Art are neighbors who each pretty much kept to themselves until he became her protector. I loved how great Art was with Chloe and how their relationship developed over time. Together they overcame her abusive ex and it only made them stronger. Good writing, believable characters, and a heartbreakingly beautiful story make this a good read. Trainwrecks and Back Checks is book number six and a great addition to the Slapshot series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
I really loved that even though Chloe had been through so much she didn't want to completely hide. I also loved how Art noticed all the things that changed with Chloe when Tim found her. The development of their relationship from pretend to real was so sweet and great. Tim finally got what he deserved and I am glad that Art was able to be there for it.
