I’ve always loved dogs, which puts me in a unique category along with what, maybe two or three billion people?

What’s not to love about an animal who will sit in your living room all day long, waiting for you to get home, and even if you need to work late and then stop for a stress-relieving beverage on your way home, when you unlock that front door, is absolutely overjoyed to see you? How could you not adore an animal who senses when your day is not going well and tries to cheer you up by dumping a sodden tennis ball in your lap?

I was probably 8 years old, playing in the back yard of our house in Prairie Village, KS, when my dad opened the gate and in rushed a 9-week-old Labrador puppy. I fell to my knees and spread my arms and that dog leaped into them as if we had loved each other our whole lives. It’s a scene that shows up in A Dog’s Purpose—a puppy and a boy meeting each other the very first time, both of them full of unrestrained joy.

We named the dog Cammie. She arrived in my life when I was just beginning to connect some of the dots in my memory to make a picture of who I was, forming my identity as a child. I remember every skinned knee and bicycle ride in the context of Cammie, who was always there for me. And I lost her just as I was starting to leave childhood behind, passing on after I’d spent a year in college. That’s Cammie, the dog of my childhood.

Years later I was riding my bicycle in the mountains outside of Pine, CO. A chance decision to bounce down a dirt road led me past a few scattered ranches and one small house near a creek, set back from the road at least 50 yards. A single “woof” from a dog caught my attention, and I braked and stood in the dry, clear air, regarding the dog who had called out to me.

She was on a chain by the house, and a fence stood between us, so I remained on the road even though I could see that the dog, a black lab mix with a crazily active tail, was clearly friendly. I gazed at her and the dog sat, attentive, staring into my eyes exactly the way my first dog, Cammie, used to look at me, really seeing into me.

And that’s when the thought hit me. What if this wonderful dog was Cammie? What if dogs live over and over again, and always remember us?

I dismissed the thought, waved at the dog, and rode away, but days later the idea came back to me. What if?

I’ve been a writer my whole life, but never have I ever written anything as important as A Dog’s Purpose.

I can’t promise you that A Dog’s Purpose will make you love your dog more—how could it do that? But I’ll tell you what a lot of people have told me: after reading A Dog’s Purpose, you’ll never look at your dog the same way again.

Another delightful dog story from Mr. Cameron. This time from the point of view of a little Chi-Yorkie mix living in NYC. He’s a little dog, but wants everyone to know that he is a DOG TO BE RECKONED WITH. The folks at the animal shelter that cared for his mom and sisters are distraught because they can’t understand why Max doesn’t seem to like any of the people who can’t resist reaching down to touch him. They don’t realize that he is simply waiting for his person. Plus those people are so very gigantic and not ever very gentle and have no respect for him at all. On his very last day of adoptability SHE appears. Max knows she’s his person and manages to escape his cage to follow her home. The story that ensues is about a small dog in a big city who wins over the hearts of anyone he learns to be ‘gentle’ with, helps his girl find her talent and strength, and learns that there might be enough love to go around.

Unfortunately when I bought this, I didn’t realize it’s targeted audience was so young. I love the original dearly, but this just wasn’t for me.

I was chosen by the publisher to be a recipient of an ARC (Advance Reading Copy) of Max's Story. The day it came my 8-year-old granddaughter took it out of my hands as I opened it and she sat down and started reading it. She finished it in four days. She loved it so much that she took it to school to share with her third grade classmates and teacher. She wrote the following review for me to share.

Max's Story review by Bowie Barker, age 8, in Portland, OR

The Max's Story book is an outstanding book! It is a great book for both kids and adults. I liked this book because I could understand it really well. The story had its ups and downs. For each problem there was a solution. This book was very interesting because there is a lot of action in it. I thought it was an excellent book that all dog lovers should read too.

I just spent the nicest couple days in the mind of a feisty little Yorkie mix named “Max”. Although it is part of the young reader series of books by W.Bruce Cameron, anyone familiar with his work knows what a gift he has for channeling the essence of a dog and telling us a good story through this innocent being’s eyes of love. If you are familiar with “A Dog’s Journey”, (which I highly recommend) you will enjoy getting more insight into the character of CJ. But as a stand alone story - Max is delightful and will definitely be a hit with young readers of all ages! If you happen to own a yorkie mix (which I also highly recommend), you will recognize the BIG dog in a little package syndrome which W. Bruce Cameron writes to perfection!

Don't judge a dog by his/her size!!! Max is an amazing "Little Dog in a Big City" who comes to the rescue in so may ways. He defies dangerous New York City streets, and all things larger than himself to protect his girl, C.J. Cat lover's won't be able to resist "Sneakers" and her antics. She and Max are adorable.....and fierce! I wont spoil the story but I will tell you that in the end, you will CHEER!!! W. Bruce Cameron has written an exciting, funny and timeless story. This book was perfect for its audience. I decided to pick it up because I had read all the other books in the "series". Even though I would say that this book is geared toward a younger audience, it didn't take away from the storyline and was also enjoyable. If you're just looking for a simplistic and nice story, I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one up.

My granddaughter gave this book to me for Christmas! She knows I love to read and that I love dogs. What a gift of the heart! And...what a lovely story. I will save the book to give back to her at a later date. She can share it with her children and grandchildren. Made my heart sing. I read the entire book this morning as sat by my fireplace and sipped my coffee - the morning after Christmas- while visions of loving grandchildren danced in my head.

Such an amazing little guy who wants the entire world to know who he is; he is Max!!! And who is Max? A Yorkie chihuahua mix who although small in stature is huge in attitude. Max’s mission in life is to take care of, love and protect “his girl”, CJ, no matter what. I would call this relationship a made in heaven connection. From the first moment Max sees CJ, he just KNOWS that CJ is supposed to be in his life and nothing will get in the way of this.
Considering I am a grown woman, and this is a book for young readers, I found not only humor, but it was a tear jerker at some points for me as well. I let my step grandchildren read a few chapters out loud to me and I could tell that they too had fallen in love with Max.
I hope that you will give this book a try and you will find the same detail and doggie prospective that all of W.Bruce Cameron’s books have. Another winner in my opinion. Bravo Bruce!

This is a wonderful book that is perfect for not only middle school age, but adults as well! Like the other books in this series, it is narrated by the dog, and is absolutely adorable! Those who are familiar with A Dog's Journey will recognize some of the human and dog characters. Although I am in my mid-50s, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Max is indeed a little dog in a big city, with a big dog and big city attitude! It gives a real understanding of why this little dog has such a big attitude, and before long you will find yourself "thinking" just like him! I highly recommend it for any age.

Max’s Story by W. Bruce Cameron an inspirational novel , based off of Max and CJ . This book shows many similarities to A Dogs Purpose , being told from a dogs perspective named Max . Max is a small dog with a big personality while CJ is quite the opposite in personality. Throughout the story each learn from one another , this shows how we all can learn from others and teach others something new .What makes this novel brilliant and creatively crafted was the unique perspective and tone from Max . In the beginning of this story Max mentions “My Girl” this reminds us that we may not be choosing our dog , but they’re choosing us . I recommend this book for those who enjoy animals and are looking for an uplifting novel .

I got many things from this book.
In this book,if we think the dog can understand, they are thinking different ways.
Like this, for example if we said gentle, they think oh! They are playing game to give me treat!
So they love to do!
And max said that they don't like anyone.we people have things like that. For example, some people like small eye.and some are not.so we have to gentle and once we are there owner,we are always there owner. Don't trash them and please love tham!,,,,

W. Bruce Cameron gives you a fun story about a feisty Dog and a naive human. It can be a quick read for an adult and a good chapter book for a child. It does point out the importance of adoption and not giving up.

Max is a tiny dog with a big attitude. He knows he has a purpose, and he finds it when he meets CJ. She's staying in NYC for the summer and is not a city girl. Yet Max is a city dog, and he'll protect her.

I read this with my son. He loves stories featuring animals. I wasn't wild about this book being from the dog's point of view. I think it would have been much more worthwhile to be from CJ's as we don't get enough of her struggles since that is what Max is supposed to be helping with. We do see her being patient with the puppy and reining in his ferociousness to be more Gentle Max. He is an alpha dog with a very possessive alpha attitude which annoyed me sometimes. I think CJ helped Max more than the other way around, but it was a good lesson in dealing with puppies and the care and patience they need.

max's story is another adorable story based on a dogs purpose movie. max's owner CJ ends up being the same owner who has molly from mollys story and max and molly meat in the end. But CJ is older like around a teenager. Also CJ is living in an apartment in the city for a little bit because she got into an art program but over all I highly recomend this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Max is a dog, but no ordinary dog he is a true new yorker. When he gets taken to the park to get sold, it was a challenge for him to find a home since he was a little aggressive. Then he finally found a girl he liked so he escaped from his cage and ran. CJ the girl he found had to keep him because if she didnt he would then get put to sleep. So he lived in a tiny apartment with a cat. He tried to tell everyone he saw he was the boss. Then CJ was told by the person who was taking care of her (her name is Jillian)
she had to give him away but thankfully she didn't have to give him away. So she then took him back to him home.

W. Bruce Cameron can't write books fast enough for our household. This book was for my daughter, age 24. My daughter has Special Needs and there aren't many books that are on a middle grade reading level that hold interest for her but the series of middle grader readers by W. Bruce Cameron do just that. One trend I notice about his books is that my daughter can read them but also can keep track of the plot and characterizations in his books. We finished Max's Story this morning and I asked her what the best part of the book was. She looked at me and said, "Max"! I wanted to know what she wanted me to write in the review and she said she liked his adventures around New York City and also CJ's part of the story including how she was going to art school. The best thing to her, I think, is that Max tells his own story. Cameron never talks down to his young readers and he makes reading exciting, even to those plague by learning differences, including severe dyslexia. As I'm writing this, I see that Shelby's Story is coming out. You can bet that we'll be first in line to buy it! Thank you, W. Bruce Cameron, for writing in such a way that both my daughter and myself look forward to your middle grade readers.

I detested nearly every minute of this book while reading it to my 9-year-old! Admittedly, I am not a fan of books where the animal tells the story, but my daughter picked out this book at her school’s book fair and so I had no choice.

In the end, I was unable to make the connection with how Max helped CJ adjust to a temporary life in NYC. Further, Max displayed characteristics of a male abuser - - incessantly calling CJ “my girl” and being completely in control of her by biting anyone else who came near. Plot details were missing or glossed over, and I’m sorry that I can’t find one nice thing to say about this book despite the fact that it’s so highly rated on Goodreads!

I put this on hold at my library and didn't realize this was a children's book until I went to pick it up but I still enjoyed it. There are (I think) four in this (puppy) series, Ellie's Story, Molly's Story, Bailey's Story and Max's Story. I may not have these listed these in the correct order but this is all the titles. I plan to read them all and share them with my grand-children that like to read. If you read and liked the A Dog's Purpose series you will enjoy these books.

A book with all the emotions

Max is a puppy that only likes one person. Her name is CJ.She is currently in New York with her mother’s friend for the summer for art school. Back home, she has a dog named Molly. CJ is very generous and kind. When she found out Max was going to be put down if she didn’t adopt him, she felt heart broken. She brought the puppy home and the owner, Jillian was furious. She said that dogs don’t belong in the city, only cats.

Jillian is an older woman who loves her cat. She is very stubborn and a serious person. Jillian reminds me of my sister Malia. She is 10 years old and if she doesn’t like something she is not going to try it, she won’t hear anyone else’s opinion and that’s the end of it. Jillian and my sister also share the love of cats.

In my opinion CJ is very loving and caring. She will buy and take care of an animal, even if it’s making her life harder. She loves dogs, and has one back home named Molly. She just got a new puppy named Max.

I think Max is very feisty and thinks highly of his small self. He makes the effort to show everyone that he is the boss and he means business. Max has a hard time making friends and doesn’t like very many people. He can be aggressive at times and tries to snap at people. When CJ trains him he learns to be gentle and kind towards anything. Max transformed from an aggressive puppy, to a kind and loving small dog.

Although Molly doesn’t meet Max until the end of the book, Molly is a young dog that loves CJ. Molly was filled with joy to see CJ after such a long time. Molly is sweet, caring, and an over good dog to have. Molly and Max meet and they are aware of each others space for a little while, but once they see that CJ’s love can be shared between the two of them, they learn to get along nicely.

I think the theme of this book is to be grateful for what you have and to be thankful for all the things we take advantage of. For example, a roof over our head, a bed at home, and a bed to sleep in. This is because Max had nowhere to go, then CJ convinced Jillian to let him stay and he had a real home.

I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is because I think the book could have had added what it was like after Molly and Max lived together after a little while. This is because I think the book just ended after CJ got home and that was the end. When you give a book a title like Max’s story, it makes you think of their life, from beginning to end. I think this book was only a few short months and should have talked about their life and not just how CJ and Max met.

Max’s Story by W. Bruce Cameron is a fictional novel that takes place in an animal shelter in New York City. The story is in the point of view of a Yorkie-mix puppy called Max. At the beginning of the story, he is in an animal shelter with his mother Zoey and two sisters called Abby and Annie. Max was born in this animal shelter like the rest of his family. However, he was different in some special way. Max didn’t get along with the people that were at the shelter, he also made the other puppies know that he is the boss and they shouldn’t mess with him. Max was trying to find the right person for him and refused to accept any other person as his owner, because of this it was difficult for Gail, a worker at the shelter, to find him a home. Although Max seemed like he wouldn’t find a home any time soon, he ended up finding the right person for him which was a teenage girl called CJ. CJ tries her best to turn Max into a more gentle and not as aggressive dog so that he can get along better with others around him.

A quote that caught my attention came from Gail, the person that organized and was in charge of the adoptions in Chapter 2. While Gail was talking to someone who tried to pick up Max, but got growled at she said, “No, he was born in the shelter. I don’t know. Max is just... not that friendly. He doesn’t play well with other dogs, either. He needs to find the right person. I think he’d do well with someone who stays at home and doesn’t get many visitors.” (26). This quote really stood out to me since it shows that every dog can belong somewhere and they just have to wait to find the right person for them.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I gave it this rating because I really enjoyed every part of the story of this book. To me the story of how a dog called Max is trying to find the right person for him and his purpose in his world, is a very interesting and entertaining story. That shows how an aggressive dog changes and starts to be more gentle with those around him.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. I would say that people most interested in this book are people who would like to read a story from a dog’s point of view. Also, people who like to see character development in a story would enjoy this book as well.
