This is not just about 12 year old Gus Schurmann, but also about the Generals he worked for and the comrades he fought with. It also describes the battles fought in Virginia for 1861 to 1863. Not only was he the best drummer and bugler, he also worked as a medical assistant, tending to the wounded. A good little history book.
It was a very good book it had some problems like it dragging on, besides that it was entertaning and I liked it, I will say what I loved about it was the realism well I Meen Duh it's based on a true story, but I still love how real it is. what I did not like about it was how the person rote about it felt kind of snappy not so go with the flow. If you don't get what I Meen by that is it was like (were at Abe Licon's house NEXT PAGE now were at the cave NEXT PACE now were in the trench) you know what I Meen. Besides that, the book was awesome, and you can learn about of history from it I recommend it I give it. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
An interesting story about a 11-year-old boy who fought in the Civil War as a bugler. It was difficult, but he was proud of himself in the end. The author did a good job de-romanticizing the whole experience. As someone who teaches middle school, this story was especially useful.
This book is about a time period in the civil war..... A little boy wants to be in the war but is two young. He goes to sign up and he lies about his age and is able to join... Many of boys did this. The boy ended up being the buglar. He learns very well and is the best in the group of people he worked with. He sent his money home to his mother. The little boy gets awarded for being so good at the buglar. Near the end the little boy gets seriously sick.
Interesting true story of a 12 year old drummer/bugler in the Union Army during the Civil War. He joined the war with his father, before his father was discharged for battle wounds during the early part of the war...the son remained in the Army.
