Fun cozy mystery with the girls

Game show contestants, home made potions, senior women, makes for a joyful cozy mystery. These women make me so happy when I read from this series. They are Christian women and yet they are spunky and clever and just a joy to read.

This book focused on a game show inspired murder. Loved seeing Gloria married and happy and doing her super sleuth thing. Hope Callaghan always keeps the humor coming and I just can't get enough.

The mystery is complex and the suspects are vocal and spirited.

Dash for Cash is the 18th book in Hope Callaghan’s awesome Garden Girls Cozy Mystery Series. I love Ms. Callaghan’s writing style; there’s always a strong message of the value of friendship and family, all while incorporating intriguing mysteries and a touch of romance without the inclusion of any gratuitous sex, graphic violence, or adult language. The writing flows smoothly and the characters are well developed, three dimensional, and affable. There are twists and turns, with red herrings thrown in. The final reveal was surprising to me. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

One of the Garden Girls, Ruth Carpenter, has entered into the Dash for Cash game show, her fellow postal worker, Kenny Webber, is helping her train for the event, and Rose Morris has prepared a special elixir to give her an extra boost. Since Paul, Gloria’s husband, has just started a new security job, Gloria has lots of time on her hands, so Ruth asks her to accompany her to the elimination rounds, which are being held in Grand Rapids. Trouble seems to seek out Gloria, and as luck would have it, one of the contestants, Amy Mahoney, is murdered during the second round of the eliminations. Ruth and Amy had exchanged in online verbal spats and Amy played roughly with Ruth, so she’s looking like the prime suspect. It will take all the Garden Girls brainstorming together, and Gloria going undercover, to clear Ruth’s name and identify the culprit.

I am not fond of game shows, but this was an okay mystery book

I am not fond of game shows because many of them bring out the worst in the contestants. Of course usually not to the extent that the show in this book did. But the difference between winning and losing the contests may hinge on luck or on a minor difference in skills, with the loser getting little or nothing and the winner getting an unearned windfall which is often not used for long term advantage. Of course the winner could theoretically use the winnings to start a business or pay down the mortgage or some other investment in the future, and undoubtedly some people do. But that is neither here nor there. Ruth embraced the challenge of preparing to be the best contestant that she could. She did not do anything underhanded to try to win, nor did she say anything ugly to or about the other contestants. So I cannot fault Ruth for her part in what happened.

The mystery was okay. Not as intriguing as some of the other books in this series. Other than wanting Ruth to be okay, and not wanting a bad guy to get away, I really did not care very much whether I ever found out who did it or why. And the hunt for the killer was confusing, disorganized, and seemed to rely on coincidence more than usual. But I did read the whole thing and I will look forward to the next book in this series. On a scale of zero to ten this would only be a seven compared to a nine for some of the author's other books, but I round up to a four star out of five.

Book 18 in Hope Callaghan's delightful Garden Girls Cozy Mystery Series has postal worker Ruth in the spotlight, as she competes in the game show Dash For Cash. Hope Callaghan's descriptive writing and attention to details makes the story, mystery, and sleuthing come alive and the reader laugh: hints about Midwest weather predictions, reminders to women to have yearly physicals and mammograms, herbal energy supplements, US Postal Service vs. UPS, Detective Rat Breath, Hip Chick Flips, lock picking, bad driving and always suspect the least suspect. The characters and Michigan setting are relatable to this Midwesterner. The Garden Girls impromptu meals makes the reader hungry. The plot takes some unexpected twists and turns, such as running a maze blindfolded. The story's sequencing is believable and the resolution was again a surprise. Hope Callaghan artistically weaves past facts into each new story, so this mystery can be read as a stand alone. Recipes included.

The Garden Girls and the Dashing for Dollars contest murder.

Gloria has time on her hands helps Ruth with her contest rules and regulations. The Garden Girls were brought together to solve the mystery of who killed the objectionable contestant. The contest entrants are all suspects and anyone of them could have committed the murder. Lots of excitement and twists and turns. Great book.

Ruth Rides High

What started as Ruth's attempt to make it to the last round of a potentially lucrative game show quickly turns deadly, and someone is out how frame Ruth for the murder of a highly dislikable fellow contestant. The Garden Girls set to work to clear her. There are a few detours, such as a kitchen fire by the newest member of the group, and Ruth's collapse and brief hospitalization, but in the end the girls win--and Ruth sort of wins. At least she isn't arrested!
