Forgotten Sons #1

Kept by the Viking

Rate this book
Loyalty to the Brotherhood comes before all. Including women.

Formidable Viking leader Rurik knows the law. His loyalty to the Forgotten Sons is his bond, and no woman will threaten what he's built from the ground up. But the Sons are a roving band of Vikings, and Rurik is growing restless—so when Normandy's chieftain offers land, the proposal intrigues him. And the sultry Parisian thrall he finds in his tent intrigues him even more…

Safira is cunning and clever and full of secrets. Rurik's men have no interest in securing her safe passage home, but, piqued with lust, Rurik views Safira's wiles as a captivating challenge—one he's determined to conquer, even if lying with her is as defiant as it is inevitable.

Traveling with Safira has been a fantasy come true—what started as lust is quickly turning to the kind of partnership Rurik could never have dreamed. But their arrival in foreign lands marks a new chapter, one that demands a Viking wife. With impossible decisions to be made, Rurik's alliances are fraying, and past promises may not be enough to save him from having to betray those he's sworn loyalty to—including Safira.

Kept by the Viking by Gina Conkle is the first book in the Forgotten Sons series. This is the story of Rurik and Safira.
Rurik was immediately wanted Safira as soon as he saw her but she was a strong women with a plan to get to Pairs. Safira cut a deal with Rurik if he for him and his fellow crew to take her to Pairs but Rurik agree to it but was really not going to honor it. Rurik had plans to go lay claim to some land in the other direction but while traveling with Safira attraction turned to love and that turned to a choice he had to make...deliver her to where she asked to go or lay claim to the land he wanted.
This book had me in just a few pages and I could not put it down until I finished it!
Absolutely loved this story!

Exciting, Authentic Viking Love Story

Set in the 10th century in Normandy, this is the story of Rurik, a leader of the “Forgotten Sons” band of Vikings. Successful in raiding, he now wants land and a home. When William Longsword offers him land in Normandy and a Viking wife, Rurik leads his men there to take advantage of the offer. The Parisian maid he rescues intrigues him but he won’t be dissuaded from his path.

Safira, a Hebrew, is not the thrall she appeared to be. Taken from her home in Paris and sold north, she clever and full of secrets she won’t reveal, even to Rurik, the Viking who rescues her to whom she is attracted. Several times she saves Rurik and helps him gain the favor of monks and Jarl Longsword. He comes to admire her and value her opinion.

Conkle has built a complex 10th century world that will serve well in this series that will bring to life the stories of the Forgotten Sons, a band of lesser Vikings who are bonded to each other with a strong loyalty. I love that her story is based on solid research with insight into the era. It has an authentic feel and the characters are richly developed. Lots of action scenes keep up the excitement as Rurik and Safira find their love growing.

If you love Viking stories, you will love this well-written tale!

I just could not really get into this book. I know it was a “romantic” Viking story, but I just couldn’t love it. The Forgotten Sons were like a MC club with horses and swords. There was lots of drama, fighting, politics, and feuding. It just didn’t light my fire. I was really perturbed by the end how it just wrapped up with no real explanation. If the jarl was so dead set on this certain condition, how did he just change his mind. The reason given was very lame.

Oh well ok read. Received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley. As you can see my opinions are honest and my own.

I really enjoyed this Viking Romance. I wish I had read it straight though and not taken a break halfway through the book, but I finally did finish it and enjoy it! It's been a while since I read a Viking romance, and now I want to tuck right in to book #2!

Reading this book was shear torture for the first 20%. I only read it because it was sent to me to review by the New England Readers' Choice Awards. I probably would have stopped reading it if it weren't for the fact I needed to give a review. Good thing I kept reading because it did get a lot better.

The plot and historical aspect of this book were superb but the constant over-explaining and introspection annoyed and bored me. These are my two biggest complaints for any story. I wish authors would give readers a little credit. We're not stupid and can get subtle hints and we prefer them to over-explaining or making the character have paragraphs and paragraphs of introspection. It ticks me off.

The other thing that was wrong with the first part of the book was how the sexual tension was written. Instead of being sexy, it was awkward and smutty. I had to look to see if the book was listed in the erotica genre. Don't get me wrong. I like sexual tension and sex scenes but this was kind of juvenile and uncomfortable like the uncomfortable you feel when someone is making out next to you in church. It just doesn't seem right.

Thankfully, it got better. The over-explaining and introspection decreased so I was able to focus on the interesting storyline.

Safira was a high born lady who was abducted and sold into slavery in 930AD. She made a bargain with a Viking named Rurik to take her away from her master and drop her off in Paris.

Rurik was the Viking who made a bargain with Safira but he may have bit off more than he could chew. She was obviously not born into slavery or being a thrall as she claimed. His aspirations to become rich and hold lands came before a woman so he would be making a detour before he dropped her in Paris.

if the author could rewrite the first 20% of this book and edit out all of the unneeded explainations and tone down the creepy sex stuff, this would be a really good book.

~ 3.5 stars rounded to 4 ~

The story takes place in a time when Vikings were settling in and around the Frankish kingdom. The setting felt authentic and real, with lots of interesting facts and vivid descriptions of how people lived at the time. That was a real treat for me since I love historical bits in my romances.
After being separated from her family, Safira asks the leader of the Forgotten Sons to help her return home, and while Rurik can tell she’s hiding something, he agrees to help her in exchange for the one thing Safira cannot give.

I love the way Safira was depicted. From the moment they met, she proved to be resourceful and clever in a way Rurik had never before seen in a woman. Her powers of persuasion and perception came in handy at some crucial times, winning the respect of every one.

There was also the political intrigue, that although I can never get into because it’s all too confusing, it was still interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. The romance though was a slow-burn, not because it wasn’t good but because there were too many things against them as a couple. They did find a way to stay together but it sure took them a sweet long time to get there.

**I received this book at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.**

Great story. Lots of research went into this book, you can tell by the story. I found it fascinating. Gina kept me turning pages all the way through. She wrote a rich privileged heroine who grows stronger and finds the opportunity of independence through her kidnapping and rescue. The hero was impossible to resist with his sense of fairness and responsibility to his family of brothers by choice.

Safira is a mystery when Rurik of Birka meets her. She invades his bed at daybreak with a warning that the trader he's about to depart from has cheated him. The price for her information is taking her from the trader's camp where she's a kidnap victim. And so begins the story of Rurik, leader of the Viking Forgotten Sons and Safira, the second daughter of a rich Paris spice dealer. As a woman her maiden-head is up for bid to the best alliance her parents can make for themselves. She know this and sees her kidnapping as a way to re-write her future. Ruric is about to make a deal with Will Longsword for a holding of his own, to keep and defend in north France. He has to make it to Longsword's longhouse in Rouen in 4 more days or the deal's off. He hasn't told his brotherhood yet since they value their roaming ways and figures they won't stay with him. Along the journey and throughout the story Safira's wisdom and diplomatic skills help him with his challenge. She wins over the brotherhood and those of Longsword's keep while she's at it. Will Rurik keep her or bow to Longswords requirement of a Viking wife? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Thank you Harlequin-Carina Press and Gina for the ARC of this book for my honest review. Awesome start to a series.

A Viking tale that will keep you entertained. Rurik is a Viking leader and is very loyal to his fellow brothers of the Forgotten Sons. But he has been wanting more than just moving from place to place and when offered some land, he is anxious to get to it. Beautiful Safira, the pampered daughter of a spice merchant has asked Rurik for safe passage home and an agreement is struck. But Rurik is anxious to get to his land and not take Safira home, but the more time they spend together he begins to have strong feelings for her. Will he do the right thing and take her where she asked or go claim his land? This is a story filled with adventure, action and a love that can breach the barriers of differences in class. Cannot wait for more in this series!!

Read this book on vacation and I think my traveling companions were a bit annoyed with me. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. Great story telling and attention to historical detail, compelling characters with a realistic romance for the era. Thoroughly enjoyed and will be reading the rest of the series for sure!

[read for the “pre-renaissance” square on the 2018 Ripped Bodice Romance Bingo]

I have many thoughts about this book - I like Viking stuff, I enjoyed this for the most part, but there is a lot of Alpha Male stuff and honestly I don’t think you NEED that, even though Vikings.

I received this book as an ARC and having not read any of Ms Conkle’s books, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I really enjoyed this book. I have only given this book 4 stars because I found it a little hard to get into because I hadn’t read the books before it and also Ms Conkle likes to use authentic words, which can be a little hard to understand but after the first chapter, the characters really came to life for me. I found that all characters where well written with each of their own very distinct characters and as I read I was hoping that each would have a story of their own. If you like the tv series the Vikings you will love this.

The clash of cultures and battle of wills pepper this story of Rurik and Safira. The guy from the wrong side of the tracks meets the “princess”. Can these two overcome their differences to make a life together? Rurik’s loyalty to the Forgotten Sons wars with his love for Safira in a beautiful story that will frustrate you but ultimately make you love them.

Viking romance- YES PLEASE! Not entirely sure what I was expecting, maybe hardcore like the tv show Vikings but with romance? Or maybe something more like medieval romance? I got a less bloody and brutal version than the tv show but enjoyable nonetheless.
.
Set in France with a Viking occupation through certain areas, our heroine is kidnapped from her wealthy home in France and manages to talk her kidnappers out of killing her and instead selling her. Enter our Viking hero and his band of merry Vikings...... Our heroine makes a deal to escape her “owners” with the hero’s help and to escort her back to France. Unbeknownst to our heroine, our hero has no intention of taking her there but instead to his liege lord (jarl) to take up ownership of land. A lot of politics follows but by this point our hero and heroine are totally in love and our hero has to determine whether to go against the jarl and follow his heart or do the “expected” thing and marry a Viking woman. (Although can I say our heroine totally kicks but at politicking).
.
The heroine is ballsy (which I love) and earns the men’s respect and admiration considering their resolve to not like her. The hero made an interesting move to betray his men for land which you NEVER see in romance novels, all was forgiven of course but there is always a bromance/bro-code in romance books. The books dipped into Viking customs and the struggle really well and although I maybe wanted something a bit gutsy I still really enjoyed it!

My reviews are honest & they contain spoilers. For more, follow me:

Gina Conkle is known for her hot and well-written Viking romances. Kept by the Viking, book 1 in a brand new series, is the latest in her growing backlist. Though I had a slow beginning, I really enjoyed the storyline and thought the H and h were absolutely adorable together.

The series titled Forgotten Sons is based on a band of Viking brothers where they’re mainly connected by circumstances, rather than bloodline. But Kept by the Viking largely focuses on the H and h’s relationship and everything surrounding it, rather than building up a backstory for the heroes of the Forgotten Sons, as they call themselves. Then again, there are 6 of them and I’m sure the author will reveal their stories in their own books. All I could gather that they had known each-other since childhood. They share a very strong bond and would do anything for one another. They’re called Forgotten Sons because of some circumstances or the other has made them leave their own home in search of glory, financial stability and, if possible, a home of their own where they can settle.

Kept by the Viking is the story of Rurik, the leader of the Forgotten Sons; a son of Birka, his birthplace. Rurik didn’t have a great childhood, and the aftermaths of that shaped his entire life every way possible. His father, Vlad, was a mean, merciless man whose show of ‘affection’ came with the use of his fist. He had treated Rurik’s mother like the dirt, and at one point, when the young Rurik rebelled against it he was beaten mercilessly. There are more stories of Vlad’s violence, but needless to say, since he left them Rurik or his mother, brother and sisters didn’t shed a single tear for that POS. He hates his father with a passion that rivals his need to possess his own lands.

Rurik and his fellow brothers Bjork, Erik, Gunner, Thorfinn, his brother Thorvald, have followed the path together enough time to know each-other like the back of one’s hand. They selected Rurik as their leader and have the utmost trust in his judgment. Rurik also had a younger brother, Leif, in the team but he sadly died in an attack some years ago; a death that still haunts him every day, breaking his heart anew. You’ll find Rurik reminiscing over the whole thing throughout the story multiple times, feeling guilty of not accompanying his brother on that fateful day to watch over him. There was no question about his love for his family. Not one.

In an outpost where they were staying for a spell to do some business, Rurik saves a thrall or a slave girl, who very brazenly asked for his help when thralls are generally trained to be in the background. This girl with dark, long hair and haughty posture gives him some valuable information to escape her nasty master. She claims she was kidnapped and forced to work here. Rurik could’ve ignored her but something about her held him enthralled since the beginning. She was an attractive girl no doubt and had curves aplenty to entice any man, but Rurik found her erect posture, her haughtiness very uncommon for a thrall. He’d already gathered she was maybe from a well-off family. And maybe he can blackmail her family if he could find out more, then get some money off of the exchange. All’s fair since he has to take care of her in the interim until the time came.

But Safira, who won’t give Rurik much more about her life before her arrival in this miserable outpost, tells him the same thing; that if she’s safely returned to her family big rewards would be waiting for him. All she needs is to be led to a boat bound to Paris. But of course, Rurik had other plans. So even though he tells Safira he’d help, he begins planning on wooing her so she gives up all her secrets. He also had a mind to bed her in exchange of his help, something Safira had gathered already but was hoping she could avoid. Well, it shouldn’t be a problem since both were attracted to each-other on the get go but Safira had heard ridiculously overblown accounts of women’s first times that made her afraid. Also weren’t they virtual strangers? Could she trust this ruggedly handsome Viking that far?

Safira had her own reasons for being so secretive. Even though she had trusted Rurik, she couldn’t dare telling him everything about her life. The fact that she’s one of the daughters of Ruben Alzaud, a famed spice merchant of Paris and led the most lavish life one could possibly live until her kidnapping the year before. Her father is that rich. That she’s also engaged to marry a prince, and for that she needs to keep her virginity intact. In that outpost, living with her nasty ‘master’ and his men, Safira had spread some rumors of being a witch which kept men away from her. But she knew better with someone like Rurik, whom she already found irresistible. Who has promised to see that she gets to Paris. But would he? Safira wasn’t sure where it’s going but she couldn’t seem to help following him wherever he went. Of course, for the time being, she had no other options either. Rurik was indeed keeping her safe.

Rurik informs everyone that they’re going to Hedeby, at Will Longsword’s place. Son of the Great Rollo, Will is now the Jarl and leader and wants to expand his lands. He’s a successful leader on his own who is always looking for able bodied men, warriors to be precise, to help him accomplish that feat. He and his half-brother, Ademar, know Rurik and his interest in fighting for a piece of land. But therein lay the dilemma. Rurik’s men knew they were about to visit the Longsword’s but they had no idea that he planned to leave the Forgotten Sons if he could accomplish this long cherished dream. Rurik had already broken one rule of their brotherhood—no women of any kind in the group— by taking Safira along. His men knew that she belongs to him and respected his decision. And though some of them weren’t happy in the beginning, Safira is well-liked by now because of her resourcefulness. However, would they forgive him for another betrayal, for keeping this a secret from them? Rurik had a lot in his mind no doubt, but most of all, by now he had his visceral need to have Safira all to himself yet no idea how he could make this possible when Longsword, in many words, told him that he must marry a Viking woman if his dream of owning a piece land is to come true.

While staying with Rurik and the other Forgotten Sons, Safira makes allies in Longswords’s place including the Jarl himself. It seemed everyone liked Safira’s haughty but elegant ways despite the fact they knew her to be Rurik’s kept. But their stay wasn’t without danger as it’s proven later on. Then there was the woman chosen by the Jarl, for Rurik, a thorn on Safira’s side. If that wasn’t all, it was also revealed that Rurik was to fight the one man, his arch enemy—whom he’d always wanted to obliterate from the face of the earth—if he’s to make a stake on his land; his own father. There were a lot going on, and yet, none was sure what to do about the budding feeling between them, already so intense that both knew they couldn’t ignore or deny it even if they tried.

After many ups and downs and gripping moments fraught with danger and confrontations, Safira and Rurik finally find their HEA in the story. While I read, the few things that stood out to me were, 1. How sweet Rurik was inside (I bet he’d scoff at my words LOL), as oppose to his tough and ruthless warrior’s visage. How gently he treated Safira throughout despite the fact that at first, his only intention was to make her his mistress. How he hated that Safira had to see his ‘other side’ quite a few times as he fought their enemies. Now, Safira probably would’ve ended up as Rurik’s mistress, and he, with his Viking ways, would think that totally fine... which brings me to 2. Of how I absolutely loved Safira’s stance of ‘all or nothing’ when in many novels the h is happy to have whatever she can get of the H; even if it means being the mistress. Safira gave herself to Rurik because she wanted him, not just to fulfill a bargain. It was one of those inevitable things seeing their sizzling chemistry. Her gift to him. She knew for certain Rurik had feelings for her just as she did, which is also discussed at one point in the story with confirmation. However, he was still unsure because it’d mean giving up his lifelong dream. Safira knew she’d never be happy with sharing Rurik, no matter what. She couldn’t do it so it was either you marry me and make me your wife or fulfill your initial promise and help me go home. She steadfastly wanted Rurik to succeed from the bottom of her heart, even if it meant they couldn’t be together.

But there were other complications coming their way when Safira’s parents suddenly arrive to take her home anyway...

Kept by the Viking very successfully sets the tone of the series, and I must say, after reading about the rest of the Sons I’m very intrigued about their stories. The next book will be of Rurik’s right-hand man Bjorn’s, in Her Viking Warrior. From the little hints I can tell he’s got his own history to tell. Eagerly awaiting! 4 solid stars and recommended.

ARC received from the author, thanks Gina. x :)

Rurik and his brothers in arms are escorting Safira to Paris , or so she thinks , after being rescued by them that was the deal she made.
However they are off to Rouen and have no intention of keeping to the deal .
Sparks are flying between our H and h , will they still be flying when the truth is known or will the romance fizzle and die .
Quite enjoyable, a good read , lots of action .

Whoa was this book amazing! I love Gina's Viking tales. The First in "Forgotten Sons" Series, Rurik meets a beautiful woman who makes him an offer he can't refuse. Safira has been kidnapped and needs to get back home to Paris. Safira was supposed to marry a wealthy Prince; however, she was kidnapped and must lie to keep her virginity. She weaves one tale after another letting the man who bought her think she is a seer. She is not but she can tell stories (Skald) and can she barter. Trade is her game!! There is one catch she must keep who she is to herself. If anyone finds out she is fearful she will be sold again or worse "kept"...SO here come Rurik and the Forgotten Sons. Warriors everyone who live by three rules...1 being NO WOMAN. Safira finds Rurik and tells him he has been cheated in a trade and that men will ambush him and the sons. What she wants in return is to be taken back to Paris. Rurik agrees but gives Safira a choice. She is "with" him (for protection) or she can pick one of the sons. She chooses Rurik and off they journey to Rouen not Paris. Rurik tricks her for he has plans of his own. He must figure out how to make her his and satisfy his Jarl who wants him to marry a true Viking woman. Along the way, Safira shows her skills and true worth and she learns just what kind of man Rurik is...and she likes it!!! She must convince not only Rurik but everyone else she is a worthy prize for this Viking! CAN NOT wait for the next story!

I always approach historical romances with trepidation. I love the genre, but as a historian, I often find myself frustrated by all the inaccuracies. I do not expect perfection, and I am aware that in order for some literature to make sense in our modern day world concessions have to be made. Luckily, I am not an expert in the Vikings in France. I am a lot more at home with the Vikings and Anglo Saxons in the UK. So, any glaring inaccuracies to do with the Viking occupation in parts of France were lost on me.

The historical aspects of this book were not the only thing that impressed me. I really liked this book. Gina Conkle's writing is wonderful. This book drew me in and kept me hooked. There was a good mix of history, romance and action.

The romance was marvellous. There was so much chemistry between Safira and Rurik. It was great to read a romance that developed slowly. By the time they got together so many feelings had already built up between them. It made the romance much more intense and relatable.

The problem with this book came in the form of one of the characters, Safira. I really liked Safira, she is strongwilled, intelligent and courageous. The problem is that she is a complete Mary Sue. She is perfect, without flaws. All the characters seem to love her. With exception to jealous women, everyone else is completely smitten. It got under my skin and marred what was otherwise a great romance.

KEPT BY THE VIKING by Gina Conkle is an awesome Viking Romance. #1 in her new and exciting FORGOTTEN SONS series, and what a beginning!
I absolutely loved Rurik, the Viking leader, who is brave, strong, his word is his bond and Safria, a sultry Parisian thrall, who uses her wits as well as is cunning and full of secrets and surprises.

Fast paced, filled with secrets, intrigue, surprises, romance, danger, and a HEA. The characters are well developed, engaging and a force to be reckoned with. I was captivated by Safria's will to survive and her survival skills. Very impressive young lady! Rurik has strength, has a kind and gentle heart but is also strong, and a definite challenge for Safria, as she is to him. Another fascinating and captivating read by Gina Conkle. This book grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go, lingers long after the last page. I can hardly wait for book 2.
I received a complimentary copy, however, all opinions are my own

Viking romances are a dime a dozen so it must have something to make it stand out. It is evident that Author Gina Conkle did her research when writing about the era and creating her characters. Conkle’s lead Safira stands out as a strong and resourceful heroine even when the odds are stacked against her. She is not only likable, she is relatable.

Filled with historical trivia and authenticity, Kept By a Viking feels as much a historical fiction as it does a romance. That being said, as another reviewer noted perfectly, The Forgotten Sons feel like an MC with horse and swords rather than bikes and guns. The ending also felt rushed, finishing rather than wrapping everything nicely. Certain decisions and plot points lack sense, feeling rushed rather than explained.

Overall, the novel is enjoyable particularly for those looking for a historical Viking romance with substance.

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an ARC of this ebook via NetGalley.

I have been on a bit of a "Viking kick" lately, and I devoured this book in one sitting. It is very well written, with lots of detail about Viking life and custom, as well as the monumental power shift occurring in France at that time while Vikings were taking over the land and simultaneously fighting among themselves for supremacy, But that richness of detail does not in any way detract from the developing romance or sexual chemistry between Rurik and Safira. Fans of historical fiction, particularly fans of Viking lore, will love this book. I am looking forward to reading more in the Forgotten Sons series.

3.5 STARS!! THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN EPIC HAD THE AUTHOR DECIDED TO ELABORATE THE ROMANCE AND GAVE THE PLOT MORE DEPTH/INTENSITY.

The romance was surprisingly sweet and endearing. SAFIRA and RURIK complemented each other - reflecting strength and weakness. I like how gentle and soft a hardened viking can be towards the woman he holds affection for, and how Safira holds a candle to her own - no lily-livered miss here. The exotic combination of Viking meets Parisian lady who reminded me of a Gypsy was the main reason I picked up this book.

The plot is average but the romance is wholesome in a cute way. Would have been a blast had the author included darker elements, but that might be a personal preference.

Thanks Netgalley for a copy to read and give a review. Hot cover alert...

Read it in one sitting. I am a sucker for a Viking tale....oh yea. Rurik and Safira's story was poignant and a sexy dance. I enjoyed the tale as Safira enters Rurik's life as a woman who needs protection and in exchange for information he will see her home to her family in Paris. Rurik has no idea who this woman is but reluctantly agree's to a barter in exchange for what he wants....her. I found the story to just grab me and take me for a delicious ride. Five stars of entertainment! Loved it.

I fell in love with Gina Conkle Vikings in her first book Norse Jewel! I have love each Viking story she has written. Kept by the Viking brings us another story of the fierce life the Vikings lived and the kindness of many of these valiant warriors.
Rurik and Safina are ice and fire. She wants to return to her home in Paris and barters with the Viking back and forth to get her home all the time watching him win quiet battles with her as they learn trust in their cruel and violent world.
A must read for Viking lovers!

A solid start to a new historical romance series that is part Vikings TV show (although with less violence) and part star-crossed lovers. The fiery leading lady is Frankish, while the male lead is Viking. Includes actual historical details (events, places, and culture), which is one of the main reasons I read this author, plus a steamy romance. I look forward to the next one. For historical romance fans.

Amazing Viking story !!!

I loved every minute of this book. Gina brings you to the Viking festival. To the hall of Jarl Will. You can see the soapstone lights hanging. The carvings in the hall sound so fascinating !! I fell in love with Rurik and Safira. Safira isn't a warrior. She uses her wits. And she is amazing !! I can't wait for more Forgotten Son's !! I highly recommend this book! 💖💖💖

Not what I expected. Not at all. But that is in the most positive way. Historical stories are normally much alike each other but this one surprised me. Well written story with a nice storyline and plot. I like that the characters and how they develop. Would have liked the language to be more true to the time period. I failed that sometimes. A passionate and emotional read with twists.
Enjoyable and recommendable.

This was an enjoyable book. It was evenly paced, well written, and not so easy to put down. This was the first time I’ve read anything by Gina Conkle and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Especially the next book in the Forgotten Sons series. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a way to kill time.

Viking books are a subgenre I normally don’t care for. This book is a marked exception to that rule. The author expertly humanizes the period of Viking expansion in Europe, creating believable adult characters, rather than caricatures, in a historically relevant world. Stayed up late to finish this book. An utter joy to read. Highly recommended.

This is a good book. Who doesn't love a good Viking story?
It's well written. Good plot. The Hero has to choose between a promise of land for him to build a future on or the woman who he has sorted of agreed to help, who has worked her way under his skin.
