Discusses the history and development of eyeglasses; includes a brief explanation of how the eye works and the vision problems that glasses can correct.
This book is part of a series called "Household History", about the history of everyday objects. I enjoyed this history of eyeglasses, and learned a few things I didn't know before. I especially liked the section on how various sorts of glasses were invented. I didn't know that they go back at least as far as the 13th century. I was also fascinated by the connection between glasses and the printing press--something which I had just never thought of before. I can't imagine having gemstones for lenses! The styles of glasses and the reasons behind their popularity were also fascinating. This book could also be used in a science lesson, as it also explains how the eye sees and how glasses are made. I must look up more books in this series. Recommended!
Somewhat quirky, but given the brevity of the book - it contained quite a few interesting nuggets of information. Given that it is only about 50 pages and illustrated, it should take an hour or less to read.
