As the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, Cassandra Cherry's life takes a turn for the worse when she stumbles upon husband Stevie lying naked, except for his socks, on a coat-strewn bed with a 45-year-old divorcee called Cynthia. Suddenly single, Cass throws herself into the business of getting over Stevie with gusto. Her main problems now are making her nine-year-old twins happy, juggling a new social life with a return to work and avoiding being arrested by an infuriating policeman who always seems to turn up at the most inopportune moments. Then, just when Cass is least prepared, and much to Stevie's chagrin, she crashes head over heels in love with the last person she'd ever expected.
One of the most dull unimpressive books I have read, a real struggle to get through. I persevered only because I seem to have chosen poor books lately and wondered if I should just stick with it! But I wish I hadn't bothered. Not much of a story and what there was was mind numbingly predictable, too long, too forced and not funny. Unrealistic, cliche'd characters none who were particularly likable. unfortunately, just not my kind of thing at all.
Wow! This book makes me want to never read again. First off, I don't know how old the author is but for a book about late 30 to 40 something year olds these character spoke and acted like 60-70 year olds! So that was the first point at which I started rolling my eyes, but then the author went on to make the lead female character seem so incredibly dumb!! (I won't point out at which parts as I don't want to spoil this terrible book for the next poor soul who wants to give it a go) If I could give this book 0 I would
I think I read a different book to the more positive reviewers. It didn’t engage me at all. I obviously have a different sense of humour as I didn’t find it particularly amusing. Mostly I found the characters irritating. Nothing much happened. I’m afraid I skim-read a lot of it to get to the end. Disappointing.
A slightly humorous romance book with a lot of dating, cheating and English humour. It has a very abrupt ending, and I see that there is another book written about these characters, but I don't think I really can be bothered to read it.
It seems very strange for 2 women in their 40s divorcing cheating husbands would immediately jump into a new relationship let alone get married so quickly. Terrible storyline.
It's not often I revisit a book but – in search of something light and humorous – I decided to pick out this early download on my Kindle. And I'm so pleased I did. This is the perfect pick-me-up, packed with loveable characters, wacky situations and an abundance of snort-worthy one-liners. OK, the plot may not be wholly original but it's painted so well I devoured most of it in an afternoon taking advantage of some early sunshine. Our heroine, Cassandra (Cass), is thrown a blinder when she catches husband Stevie in an extremely compromising position with another woman at New Year. 'So this was why my husband hadn't been by my side whilst Big Ben bonged the midnight hour. Clearly he'd been too busy doing his own particular brand of bonging.' The laughs come thick and fast, one in particular about women suffering the 'screaming heebie-jeebies' when … Well, I'll leave that particular gem for you to read yourself. Cass's journey to recovering from Stevie's infidelity is liberally sprinkled with potential new men and aided by her hilarious and sex-mad friend, Morag. Yes, I figured out where it was going, but it was a joy to get there. A fabulous romp.
I read this out of sequence as I read the follow up book, Lipstick and Lies first. It features the same characters but begins with the breakdown of Cassie's first marriage.
Overall, I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the follow-up. I felt it was marred by the frequency of the coincidences that brought the main characters together. To me, that seems like lazy plotting. Once, is maybe acceptable, but Cassie and Jamie seem to bump into each other all the time and in the most unlikely places. My other peeve was the ending was very abrupt.
Putting that apart, I enjoyed the story. It was light-hearted escapist fun. And I will certainly seek out more books by this author.
I was in two minds about this book, and read a sample. Then immediately to get the whole book. Debbie Viggiano had me laughing from the very start. When you consider the awful events that kickstart the book, this is surprising. What I love is the honesty. Women temporarily escaping the confines of domesticity, breaking loose, and getting absolutely paralytic. Insisting they are strong, independent women yet desperate for a man and marriage. This book had me from the first page. I absolutely adored the story and the characters! This book really has it all - all that I needed anyhow!
The children were wise beyond their years and absolutely amazing! All the twist and turns, all the different stories within this one, had me actually forgetting it was ONE and more several different books that I were reading. It was absolutely amazing and I’m definitely reading more by Debbie Viggiano!
Loved this book - it was a fun book with lots of laugh out loud moments! Although Cassie did move on from her ex-husband quickly, once you know, you know! So I have no problems with this aspect of the book, like some other people seem to have found. Can't wait to pick up the sequel and get stuck back into Cassie's interesting life!
Oh this book is DREADFUL! It’s the ultimate Boomer novel- women constantly slagging other women’s appearance and bodies, absolutely horrified at the suggestion of abortion, gay women constantly referred to as ‘dykes’… the list goes on. I couldn’t finish it, it made me so cross! That said, if you are a Daily Mail reader you will probably love it.
I enjoyed the story of Cassandra 's life , she went through a Lot of situations that took courage to over come. Through marriage ad divorce she managed to over come self dough ad fall in love again.
Read at work in lumch break getting strange look as sat giggling. But worth the read. So whats next??? For these would be great as i am sure it will be as funny or even funnier with what going to happen next. Can not wait.
Funny and well written this was an enjoyable and interesting story . Moving at a good pace it didn’t need any padding out as there was plenty of content and it deserves it review rating.
This was an absolutely fantastic read! So many 'laugh out loud' moments. I managed to get it for £1 on my Kindle, BARGAIN. I will definitely be downloading more of Debbie Viggiano's books as if this one is anything to go by, they too will be fantastic!
