Twenty billion people live on the Earth in a city with no end. Pollution, corruption, high unemployment, and the lack of clean water leave the population scratching out a meager existence. Easton Miller Takes a chance on a job in the colonies on a new world. Expecting to find a better life he is faced with knowledge of a horrifying secret buried deep inside of him. A secret that will change the existence of mankind and the very perception of what and who we are.
Life on a new planet was difficult, but better than on the declining Earth
Easton Miller was a Marine. No longer in service, he was still a Marine. He had enlisted because the Marines were promised a job after serving their hitch. With severe unemployment on Earth, a job was worth the time in service! When his hitch was over, Easton was given a job - on the ground, between the skyscrapers housing the overpopulated planet, with unbreathable air, killing mutant rats the size of dogs. When given the opportunity to leave Earth and live on a new planet, Easton jumped at the chance! He had no idea what was in store for him. Not even a glimmer of an idea that everything would change, even his humanity would be gone, as he became . . . something else. Something more. Something better?
Great characters, a great storyline, and a decent storyteller came together to make a good read! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I was asked to read this book as an ARC for a fair review by a fellow author, and at first I had my misgivings as I had yet to find a book like this that I had liked and told AL White this at first.
I picked up the book two nights ago at 10pm and before I knew it, it was 2am and my eyes were struggling to stay open but I had read 80% of the book by that point and didnt want to put it down, it had everything you could possibly want, action, suspense, and human emotion at discovering a new planet.
The creatures and inhabitants of Neferatum were well described, the human characterss had flaws, and werent perfect, but that makes us human.
I cant wait until I read the next segment in this story and if you want to read a good book that doesnt take much brain power to follow so that you can just enjoy what you are reading then this is for you.
Well done AL White, as you know I had my misgivings but those disappeared by page 2
A well written novel that pulled me in from the start and kept me reading until the end, which was very early in the morning. If you are into fast paced dystopian sci-fi, this is for you. Recommended!
It was fun. This story is easy to fall into and just ride through the action. The world building is scant but enough for you to easily grasp the characters’s motives. I did want a touch more world building. Our main character mentions often how he’s never seen the sky before and I had to wonder about that. Like never never? Is that usual? Unusual for Earthers? And then what problems do such people have when they get to a colony world and have to deal with actual horizons and big open skies?
I liked our main character. He’s a likable dude but his personality is pretty mellow. He could be anyone, really. I wanted a touch more for him too, like some bad habits or a tendency to pick his teeth when nervous or such. Perhaps he grows some personality as the series progresses.
The ladies show potential. However, all of them are introduced as romantic interests first. In fact, the story seems to think their most important attribute is their curves. That aside, the ladies have skills and do the most to keep the characters and plot alive.
The story centers around a crash landing in a forest full of large carnivorous creatures that want to find out if humans taste like chicken. I adore such survival stories. So right away I was invested in the story. There’s enough here to carry my attention over into Book 2. 3.5/5 stars.
The Narration: Matthew Crow had a great voice for Easton Miller, our hero. He sounded a little naive and yet dedicated, just as I envisioned him in the story. I also liked Crow’s female character voices which sounded feminine without sounding like cartoons (a difficulty some male narrators struggle with). Crow did stumble a little over the alien names once or twice. The pacing was spot on and there were no tech issues with the recording. 4.5/5 stars.
I received a free copy of this book & my opinions are 100% my own.
What earth has become in the future is probably close to what the reality will be in 100+ years. What the humans are .... greedy assholes who would willing destroy another planet for their own needs is also pretty accurate. Loved the human/alien (hybrid) element to the story. Being torn between your two parts. White never fails to deliver a great story. Matthew Crow did a great job narrating.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
This is the first book that I've read from A.L. White. I've been eyeing them for a while and finally got time to read one. Considering I haven't read a sci-fi book in a while, I thought I would give this one a whirl. I was not disappointed. The Alien Hybrid idea added to the story and drew me in. A little bit more of worldbuilding would have done it for me, but I won't nikpick the book based on my 'personal preference'. Well done, A.L!
The plot of this book had a lot of potential, however, it was rushed to the point of making me almost indifferent. There were several mistakes with grammer and punctuation, which took me out of the story very often, and there was absolutely no character building. For a story that had so many of people surrounding the main plot, I didn't feel a thing about any of them. Some characters are brought up, as if they will be important and are never mentioned again. 2/5 stars because the plot, again, had a lot of potential, but the book fell very flat for me
