In Florian Zeller's The Lie, a companion piece to his earlier play The Truth, Michel and Laurence are coming for dinner. But Alice has spotted Michel kissing another woman that very afternoon, leaving her with a dilemma. Her husband Paul believes it is better to behave as if nothing has happened; Alice is far from sure. An argument ensues and as their own relationship is held up to scrutiny, the question as to who is being protected and why grows ever more difficult to answer.

Florian Zeller is a French novelist and playwright. His work has been translated into a dozen languages, including English. He won the Prix Interallié in 2004 for his novel "Fascination of Evil" ("La Fascination du Pire").

Yes, 'The Lie' is a delightfully light and funny play about two couples who are friends. Throughout they discuss whether married couples should lie to each other about affairs to prevent hurt or be brazen and come out with it. In the process the tangle of whether they may or may not have had or be having affairs with each other goes round and round in its merry circle. Is each one lying or telling the truth? Personally, I found this somewhat old ground and a shadow of Zeller's earlier and much wittier and funnier play, 'The Truth'. The cover conveys a tragedy. Don't understand it. Freak Out! In retrospect, it was probably a mistake to read this back to back with its companion piece, 'The Truth', since not only is the subject matter the same (infidelity, and the accompanying untruths around such), as well as the basic structure ... but the characters have the same names, although it is clear these are NOT meant to be the same people (since they have different occupations and partners). So it was a bit confusing and disconcerting to have to realign allegiances initially, but the fact remains this is a solidly built, and often humorous, piece of theatre, and as always, Hampton's translation is a joy to read.
فکر میکنم همین که کتاب رو تو یه روز خوندم و خوشحال بودم که دستمه نشونه اینه که باید 4 ستاره رو بهش داد. ولی یه جورایی همه اش حس میکردم دارم متن مبتذل میخونم. جذاب و پرکشش ولی تا حدی سطحی. احتمالا دیدن نمایشش بیشتر بچسبه
خنده داره که توی ترجمه به این اشاره نمیشه که آلیس میشل رو در حال بوسیدن زن دیگه ای دیده. فقط نوشته شده که با زن دیگه ای دم یه مغازه دیدتش که باعث میشه آدم فکر کنه چرا این قضیه اینقدر مهم و عجیبه برای آلیس. ولی خب وقتی خلاصه کتاب به انگلیسی رو میخونی میبینی که در واقع در حال بوسیدن طرف رو دیده. ما هم که از بد روزگار همه مون متخصص شدیم در اینکه یه جمله ترجمه شده بخونیم و خودمون بفهمیم که جمله و مقصود اصلی چی بوده.
عاشق زلر شدم. یه چیزی شبیه اون فیلم پرفکت استرینجر که انگار وقتی وارد جزئیات روابط زوج ها میشی می فهمی که چه پایه های سستی می تونه داشته باشه. کتاب من رو یاد اون کتاب دروغ و اراده آزاد سام هریس انداخت که با اصرار می خواد بگه ارزش صداقت و دروغ نگفتن در جامعه انسانی خیلی بیشتر از اون چیزیه که فکر می کنیم. و واقعا هم دنیای با دروغ کمتر چقدر دنیای بهتری می تونه باشه. الان که این متن رو می نویسم نمایش دروغ زلر در عمارت ارغوان تا ده روز دیگه اجرا داره، ولی نمایشنامه رو که خوندم حس کردم اگه برم نمایش رو ببینم احتمالا لذت خوندنم رو خراب می کنه.
Yeah pretty quick and easy read on the train, as I was expecting.
Essentially an alternate time line to the events of The Truth, played out in a slightly less funny, slightly more grim way. The confusion is present as with every play Zeller pens, and it's clever how by the end, no one but the audience/reader knows what reality is.
