Meet Me There

Rate this book
A dark Chemistry lab. A fake British accent. It's all fun and games until somebody falls in love.

When sixteen-year-old, Ashlyn Brooks, runs into a sweet British guy in the dark Chemistry lab, she has no idea she's actually sitting in the pitch black room with her longtime rival, Luke Davenport. She also doesn't know that she's stepped into another one of the football captain's pranks. It isn't long before she's sharing things she's never told anyone, and starting to fall for the mysterious guy with a sexy accent who seems to understand her in a way no one ever has before.

When Luke's mom dies the summer before his senior year, he turns to pranking Ashlyn to keep his mind off his loss. But the more he gets to know her, the more he regrets using his fake British accent in the first place. Soon Luke is walking the thin line of keeping his lies a secret and wishing he could tell her that the boy she's falling for is really him.

CW: Definitely read these as the book touches on a range of issues.

A formulaic romance with some serious issues thrown into the mix. As I said in an earlier post, cookie cutter romances aren’t a bad thing when it is done well. The elements that make some teen romance books more enjoyable than others are: the characters are interesting and have depth, amazing chemistry that leaps off the page, and dialogue that can be witty, intelligent, meaningful and romantic.

This book is an example of doing some of those things reasonably well. There was a bit of an instalove situation with ‘British boy’ and I was a bit annoyed at some of the supposed swoon worthy moments. At one point he said ‘thank you’ and Ashlyn gushed on and on about how amazing he was, and kind, and sweet and perfect. Ummmm......he just said 'thank you'. That's basically a requirement of being a civilised person. I didn’t really like how dependent Ashlyn’s life seemed on finding love and I definitely preferred Luke’s narration. It was, however, a good premise and I got caught up in the story.

I thought it was refreshing in a teen love story that two of the male characters were dealing with serious personal issues. They acknowledged that this negatively affected their behaviour towards other people and that their actions were wrong. Also, at one point the boys are discussing who gets to keep Ashlyn....um excuse me! I don't think anyone thinks the notion of owning women is in any way romantic. Am I right women?

Aside from those gripes, I think there was good chemistry between Ashlyn and Luke which made for an enjoyable read.

A great YA romance!

I really loved this book- the story had more depth than I expected and our two main characters were so likable and relatable. I loved how each chapter transitioned from one character’s first person perspective to the other’s. There was a sweet clean romance that I fell in love with and can’t wait to read more by this author!

CATFISHING: THE BOOK. OUT NOW IN BOOKSTORES NEAR YOU!

I very quickly realised I wasn't gonna like this, so I decided to do a "live commentary" on it:

-what a cheap way of introducing your characters
-okay so the narrator for Luke goes for this low and deep british accent and it just doesn’t do it for me. he’s actually not good at this hahah
-”that was the first real conversation i’ve had since my mom died.” first of all, that was not a conversation - more of a rambling mess. but go on I guess
-this dude making plans like he’s some kind of evil mastermind but ends up sounding like a real ass psychopath
-this is REALLY giving me the creeps. i’m so uncomfortable
-jesus christ they’ve said three lines to eachother and she’s like ”gosh jolly you’re really deep and understanding mate” ??? is she for real
-doesn’t anyone know anything about england or y’all stupid or something
-are you really telling me a school counselor would tell a bunch of random high schoolers that another students mom passed away. wowza
-how is this girl so stupid. like c’mon
-this is so boring
-Zzz Zzz Zzz
-oh yeah lets just LOUDLY yell our number infront of all these people and then LOUDLY yell that you better change it for a better one
-okay but isn’t this a form of catfishing for pros though???
-and then it turns into straight up catfishing
-and this is STILL considered YA romance?
-okay but how am I still shocked by anything after i’ve read After. #foreversalty
-who even is this noah dude and can he just please, for the love of heavenly father, shut the fuck up already before I smack him
-”I could totally whip a nae nae” when you try to be down whit the kidz
-so you’re telling me that these "arch enemies" suddenly gets along, no problem, and acting like they’ve been friends forever. sure sure
-who the hell would be like ”haha u loser why u wearing PYJAMAS to a PARTY?!”. just how stupid are these kids? isn’t it obvious this is a prank and, like, it’s actually funny? it's just a prank Han
-if I hear the word ’british boy’ one more time I might just punch a wall. it’s like the worst soft porn name i’ve ever heard
-this is the lamest online conversation ever
-jealousy is disgusting
-this lil movie date is a little awkward I must say
-OMG NO SHE TURNED HER HEAD SHIT THIS IS MORE THAN AWKWARD
-I swear if one of my parents died and the other one suddenly came home with another person just a couple of months after the death - and after not being home during most part of that time - and been all like ”heheh we’re kind of dating” I would have flipped some fucking tables. that’s so fucking rude to your child
-what do you mean it’s not that honest?! YOU’RE LYING ABOUT YOUR WHOLE IDENTITY BRO!!!
-”omg hihi 6’3, you’re sooo tall. I LOVE tall guys hihi” i’m gagging can someone please choke me so I don’t have to endure any more of this
-how is she still so stupid? and I love how he’s obviously trying to break things off and she’s just like ”yeah I adore every inch of your british tall body. you like me too, ehh?? riGHT?!”
-”wHy woULdn’t YOu WaNt tO DatE ME” I really do wonder why, shannon
-wow why would you even want to date a guy that literally, to your face, says he has no interest in yo ass
-this girl being like ”how DARE you not like me back when I have feelings for you. you’re obviously lying” is the biggest mood
-if this was the other way around and the guy was forcing himself onto the girl, people wouldn’t find it ”cute” or ”romantic”
-”I want to go home and mope” gurl same I can’t stand this anymore what is even going on
-this dude flexing on her like he’s Neil Armstrong
-how the tables have turned, huh? now he’s all like ”why doesn’t she want to date me? ME?!”
-ashlyn: ”he’s so good with the ball”
me: [totally not laughing] yeah, how come
-this shit is stressing me out
-i’m not having a good time
-ashlyn: [orders a dr.pepper]
luke: ”you have good taste in drinks!”
me: ???
-”this amazing man” you’re both like 16-17, don’t kid yourself
-lol her brother tho. he’s a real hero
-how rude. why wouldn’t he officially introduce himself to her brother?
-I’M OFFICIALLY DEAD. ON THE FLOOR. OH GOD HOW EMBARRISING
-so three pages ago she thought it would be amazing if luke was british boy but now she’s not into it? okay cool
-what lukes dad wanted to say: ”you know son; it was really nice to finally fuck”
-okay so i’m sitting in a waiting room at the hospital and it takes everything in me to sit still and be quiet and not scream at the top of my lungs. why am I doing this too myself?
-hahah her ex climed up to her window in the middle of the night??? i’m dead, again
-I love how she’s like ”omg your stepdad HIT YOU?! that’s horrible! but lets move into the bathroom cuz I don’t want yo nasty ass blood on my clean carpet”
-okay so this ex-boyfriend of yours probably have a concussion, but you want to send him out again?! I mean he doesn’t deserve your kindness, but you could do something
-you lied about your whole ass identity and you still have the nerve to go ”yeah she’ll forgive me if I get her some flowers”. bro. c'mon
-”as we popped and locked” I didn’t now I was watching high school musical
-chicken noodle soup... yeah you do actually know the dude suffered a concussion and not a cold, right?
-”a good homecooked meal” IT’S SOUP
-yep, the Phones Camera App. the App for the Camera. in your Phone. the name we all call it by
-she’s angry with herself for ”overreacting” when she found out luke was catfishing her. gurl, I would murder his ass and still not consider it overreacting
-he pulled pranks on her for like a year because ”I was totally flirting with you”. that’s the equivalent of an adult saying ”oh he just likes you darling” when you were a kid and the stupid boy in your class hit you
-also why the fuck were you flirting with a girl that had a boyfriend. what the hell is wrong with you
-I might have puked a little when he used his british voice again
-ashlyn: ”my ex-boyfriend manipulated me”
luke: [manipulates her]
ashlyn: ”cute!”

I really enjoyed this G-rated young adult romance. The hero is very sympathetic. The heroine, amazingly, actually at times eats healthy food. There is no alcohol, and therefore no drunkenness. The hero is not promiscuous, and actually doesn't really date until the heroine.

Ashlyn had no lost love for Luke.
He made her life miserable by pulling pranks on her. In fact they both are on a prank war that has been going on since last year.
But when Ashlyn stumbled on Luke in the dark without knowing who he was. Pretending to be a british exchange student, they kept communicating and soon start developing feelings for eachother.
The only problem is that Luke is sure that if he tells Ashlyn the truth, she will hate him forever.

Despite it being the first book in this "stand alone series", I actually read it after Don't Forget Me.
It is cute and fluffy but I got bored halfway through and just dnf'd it. I just didn't care enough to keep reading.

Great balance of emotion

There's something so delicious about a secret identity romance and this one, set in a dark corner of a high school, was pure fun. Although I keep getting older, these teen romances will always hold a piece of my heart, catapulting me back to the good parts of my past.

Full of cuteness and fluff, I wasn't expecting the thick ribbon of depth that I found. I loved watching the story unravel, as the characters grew and matured. I loved feeling different emotions, without wading into too much angst, and the dancing scenes were an added bonus.

Content: mild romance (kisses); mild moments of seriousness (death, bullying, abuse, etc)

Quick Summary: A high school version of You've Got Mail

My Review: Meet Me There by Judy Corry was book one in the Ridgewater High novels.

About the Book: Two rivals catch feelings for one another. As they begin to get to know each other better, in preparation for a school fundraiser, they both become besotted. When a deception is revealed, however, things take a turn. Will they ever be able to recover?

My Final Say: This high school romance was most excellent. I loved it! The emotional arc for the MMC was especially touching.

LOVED LOVED LOOOOVVEDD, this was so cute my heart will burst <3 .. it's so good and the relationship between Ashlyn and Luke is just adorable .. if you liked P S I like you by Kasie west you will like this book
it's about a girl who 'meets' a guy in a dark chemistry lab.. but little did she know that this guy is actually her enemy !! .. she is struggling between hating the 'real' Luke and liking ' British Guy ' who is also Luke .. and you'll see what will happen
it's light and fluffy and minimal drama there

this was too cute!!

( what worked? )
♡ the writing was easy to follow and served the story well!
- the relationship between the fmc (ashlynn) and her best friend (i think her name was elena?). i liked how they were pretty steady and consistent in their friendship, which is something that rarely happens in ya romcoms!
♡ the brother-sister dynamic between ashlynn and (can’t remember her brothers name). i liked how they were both supportive of each other!!
- LUKE. he’s so sweet and respectful and HE BOUGHT HER FLOWERS REPEAT HE BOUGHT HER FLOWERS. not just some random ones BUT HER FAVORITE COLOR #ineedhim

( what didn’t work? )
♡ the miscommunication. i get not wanting to face rejection, but when there are signs that both of y’all have feelings, AND there’s a secret identity involved, COMMUNICATE!!!! you can be mature teenagers and talk through your feelings instead of fleeing the scene like a psycho.
♡ the way she started saying her mom was so controlling in the beginning but that conflict was never resolved or mentioned??
♡ the “i’m so tall” trope. i get it, most ya fmcs are as tall as toddlers these days, but when you’re tall, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t make it your personality!🙏🙏
♡ the overall cheesiness of it all (it was not good cheese), and yea it was not my fav
♡ the writing got VERY CRINGE at times😕

I'm so in love with this series! What a way to start & my heart is still pounding over Luke Davenport! I maybe 40 but I just sometimes love to read a good, clean YA Teen Romance. Meet Me There is about two rivals in HS that love to pull pranks on one another. Luke never realized pulling the biggest prank on Ashlyn would backfire on him. This was one of the sweetest stories I've read in a while. I cannot wait to start on Jess & Eliana's story!

One prank led to another, and before long, we were in a war-a friendly war, anyway, I thought he’d forget about our rivalry over the summer, but apparently, he still had nothing better to do with his time. We’d always kept our pranks fairly harmless, but this…this was going too far.

She laughed, and I felt like I’d been hit by a sack of rocks. I knew that laugh. I’d heard that sweet melodic sound about a billion times last year in Foods class.
This girl was Ashlyn Brooks.

I gritted my teeth at the thought of Noah treating her so terribly. I probably wouldn’t hold off tackling him today at football practice. He deserved to be crushed by someone.

I took the phone she held out, our fingers brushing as I did so. I tried not to notice the shock of electricity that came from her touch. That wasn’t supposed to happen with Ashlyn.

The kind of kiss that inspired songs and romance movies and all that other lovey-dovey stuff.

I’d only been friends with Ashlyn for a couple of weeks and I already knew I’d never get over her even if she never forgave me.

I hated myself for being such a cliché, but Netflix and ice cream were a cliché for a reason.

I still didn’t know exactly what our relationship would look like from here on out, since I had no idea what he would want. But I knew that I definitely wanted to change things. It had only taken a few seconds of seeing him there lifeless on the field to realize that he was way more important to me than any of the anger that I’d been holding onto.

But I couldn’t blame him-Ashlyn was a hard girl to get over. Probably impossible to get over.

Even reading this for the second time, it was still cute, and adorable. If you're looking for a sweet, fun, adorable, clean YA teen romance, this series is for you.

How could a guy who looked so cute and innocent be so devious?

Luke was mine and I was his, and everything was right in my world.

This book was entertaining. I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers and this book was just right! The relationship between Luke and Ashlyn was adorable. The swoon, the laughs, the emotions all in this adorable book. 4 stars.

I read this book after reading "Don't forget me" by this author, however, I would recommend reading this book first. It is basically a prequel even though both books can be read on their own. This book is Ashlyn (Jess' sister from "Don't forget me") and Luke's story.

In this book we get a greater insight into Ashlyn and Luke's personalities and lives. Luke, the talented football team's captain, is suffering in silence when death comes to his family. His outlet is playing pranks on Ashlyn, a girl he is attracted to. Ashlyn, a dancer on the drill team has low feelings of self-worth after breaking off an unhealthy relationship with her boyfriend Noah. A chance encounter between Luke and Ashlyn in the dark chemistry laboratory one lunchtime, leads to further meetings and a friendship between the two, without her knowing who the mystery guy with the British accent is. What started out as a prank for Luke (playing the British student to extract information about Ashlyn to use as revenge for a prank she played on him), ends up in feelings of guilt as he falls hard for the sensitive and trusting Ashlyn.

In the meantime, Luke and Ashlyn are paired off as dance partners for a charity fundraiser at school. As they practice their dance routine, Ashlyn becomes attracted to Luke and confused about who she likes best, "Bristish boy" or Luke. How is Luke going to untangle himself from the web he has spun without losing the most important person in his lonely life?

The story line is interesting and the developing romance between the two characters is sweet. Once you read this book, make sure you read Jess and Eliana's story in "Don't forget me"!

I was in the mood for a YA read and this book was just what I was looking for! It was such a sweet rivals to more, secret identity story.

Things I Loved:
-Their pranks
-“Scuba diving”
-Dance partners
-Panda head
-BBC movies
-"Your mom died. That's not something you just get over. If you weren't sad, I'd wonder what was wrong with you."
-Their “debut”
-That KISS
-The epilogue! ♥️

When I say I was looking for a YA read, I really was. The pranks were high school maturity level as were the decisions that fueled this story along, but it had more depth than I expected and I appreciated the struggle Luke was going through, the way their relationship snuck up on them, and the growth both he and Ashlyn experienced. I love the vulnerability of getting to know someone without knowing who they are and this book did that so well. There was a good amount of lying going on, but it was handled with the seriousness it deserved. And the resolution and epilogue were the sweetest!

This was my first read by Judy Corry and I realized it was on my Kindle since November of 2021! Craziness. I am so glad I finally read it and will definitely be checking out more of her books in the future!

Really great, believable characters and storyline

I really liked this book. Best one yet from Judy Corry. I love how real and believable Luke is. Yes, he's the hot, high school quarterback, but he's not the overinflated stereotype. Ashlyn and he have great chemistry. Of course there is drama and conflict in the story, but it's not overly angsty or melodramatic. Really enjoyed it!
