Maria Inês Rebelo, born in Lisbon in 1985.

She remembers having started reading Jules Verne's books many, many years ago because it was the only collection of books she had at the time, since it was a way of following a story , faithfully. After that, she began to read more and more until adulthood, especially novels by writers like Isabel Allende.

After being an avid reader from an early age, she began writing her own texts and in 2015, she published ‘O Trabalho Voluntario: uma reflexao juridica e social’ (Voluntary Work: a legal and social reflection) through Chiado Editora, Portugal.

‘Hypnosis: A Return to the Past’ is her first novel. Together with this book, Rebelo wrote ‘The light of Marva: The story before Jasmine’ (a bonus available free to readers).

She is impressed by the mastery of certain writers, and has some literary devotions. She thinks books change the world, and that writing is an instrument of power. For good, and for evil.

‘If one day, you find a secret place, will you be able to keep it secret?

Portuguese author Maria Inês Rebelo obtained her degree in law and though she has never practiced law she wrote VOLUNTEER WORK: A LEGAL AND SOCIAL REFLECTION. HYPNOSIS: A RETURN TO THE PAST marks her debut novel – a book whose focus is the human soul. As she has stated, she hopes that through reading her books she hopes readers will acquire a different view of the power of the human mind and mankind. “Even when we are not looking for ‘Goodness’, we may find it if we want to.’

Maria opens her book with a seductive passage about her story – ‘The story you are about to read tells the life story of Anne Pauline Roux, not only in the past, but also in the present and the future. Anne Pauline has a destiny. It is a destiny that only reveals itself when, one day, she takes the important decision to begin hypnosis sessions with the famous hypnotist, Marcus Belling. Her intention is to confront her fears and anxieties. To this day, she is still learning that through hypnosis and past life therapy, she can finally understand her inexplicable feeling of not belonging anywhere and inability to establish her own identity. In fact, the experiences of her past lives appear to have contributed in some way to the person she is today. At the same time, these moments have also given her the coordinates to find her future. Throughout a nine-month therapy period set by Marcus Belling, Anne Pauline will discover that she contains a mighty force within herself, which shows its power only while she is under hypnotic trance. Under a secret alliance with Belling’s opponent, Josef Salvaterra, she will use that same power to put an end to the talent of Marcus Belling. In fact, she considers that he is the principal person responsible for her inexplicable anxiety. However, this decision will weigh heavily on her conscience. As a matter of fact, it is a chance for her to forgive her own past and, thus, build her path to future happiness. The search for truth will require Anne Pauline to accept the consequences of her search, which sometimes may be inevitable and unpredictable. Anne will understand it much later. Until then, her indecisions and dilemmas will be part of this journey and will demand that she takes brave decisions to achieve the biggest goal of her life: her freedom. Mainly, her liberation from her past.’

Maria leads us into her story with both depth of background and a fine degree of suspense – ‘At the exact stroke of 12 o’clock, Anne Pauline Roux rang the bell on Marcus Belling’s medical clinic at number 27 of the famous Sun Avenue. It was mid-July and the day was very warm already. A fresh, yet different breeze was blowing in the air. The city, too, was bustling with movement, as wave after wave of tourists invaded it at this time of year. In fact, when Anne Pauline rang the bell, she did not even know who she was looking for. Marcus Belling was a renowned hypnotist known throughout the country for many years, after appearing on his first national television show where he talked about hypnosis. The most famous of his many public presentations were his interviews on the Therapy of Past Lives and Regression, which had become especially legendary. It would not be going too far to say that, the entire country would stop to listen when Marcus Belling spoke. This was a special day for Anne Pauline, as she had wanted to meet the famous hypnotist, about whom so many people had spoken for several years, but she was afraid of the unknown. For this reason, before making her appointment, she’d decided to buy a book to try to reduce the dread she felt whenever she thought about being hypnotised. She had bought it a few months ago, and its title, The Mysteries of Hypnosis, created a certain feeling of suspense. On this summer’s day, she had been almost hypnotised by the words, as if she had been dragged into a world of which she was completely ignorant. She tried not to think any more about it, at least not when she was steeling herself to ring the bell of number 27 Sun Avenue. Since Belling had started his practice as a hypnotist, people had, in effect, adopted new ideas and perspectives about hypnosis as a therapeutic method and alternative to traditional medicine. Hypnosis had still been seen as a kind of occult practice twenty years earlier, and so its practitioners and ‘followers’ were banned from the conventional system of traditional medicine. Today, this is no longer the case. Some have argued with conviction that Marcus Belling has been responsible for this change in mentality.’

The synopsis shows us where the story is leading – ‘Marcus Belling is a world-famous hypnotist. For the past 20 years, many exclusive clients have benefited from his skills and desire to help people. However, everything changes when a mysterious woman named Anne Pauline Roux knocks on his door. She holds a rare power when hypnotized, which will affect both their lives in ways they could never imagine. Her unique power is so strong that it doesn’t stay secret for long. Marcus’ archrival and fellow hypnotist, Josef Salvaterra, has been looking for a way to shut down Marcus’ business for years. Pauline may just give him the opportunity he’s been waiting for. If he can work this to his advantage, he could be recognised as the greatest hypnotist the world has ever seen. With such a prize at stake, is there anything he’s not prepared to do? Reading this book is a hypnotic process that will lead you to question the meaning of destiny and truth, and restore faith in our ability to find the good, even when we are not looking for it.’

More then just a fine novel, this book is a welcome exploration of the power of the human mind, The skill Maria displays in this debut novel suggests we have a promising new author in our midst. Recommended.

Marcus Belling, a renowned hypnotist after his first national television and interview on the Therapy of Past Lives and Regression made him most famous among the competitor. Josef Savaterra, another hypnotist and Belling both had different work methods. While Belling resisted commercial attitude of making profits and having any association with political parties and focused on treating his clients by using hypnosis, Josef was offered the post of Minister of Labour. Belling had the full support of his secretary Sofia Estelar who was behind his success and had good detection and filtering capabilities so that Belling’s clients are the real one needing his help. Meantime, Anne Pauline appeared and changed the dynamics of both hypnotists built over twenty years. The hypnotists had a very different background and past experience which determined their current characteristics. Anne suffering from nightmares and difficulty in finding her right identity seeks help from Belling. The dreams of past lives used to invade her nights and appealed her to travel back to the past and finally, the door was opened and she was allowed to meet Marcus for the hypnosis session followed by series of questions. More then just a fine novel, the book is an exploration of the human mind and senses, therefore, I really enjoyed the novel and this story is for people with interest in hypnotism and reincarnation. Though editing could be improved by focusing more on Anne Pauline. I will surely suggest that the book is worth reading in detail.

Wow this novel was truly amazing but not hypnotizing! This is so well-done and thought out. This story is told by Maria Inês Rebelo. Maria has a wonderful way with words that make the story flow.
This is a defiantly a unique story. It talks about hypnosis, past life regression, and a lot more. This story is about the famous Hypnotist Marcus who has a reputation for taking on and even the helping the most difficult cases. He has a lot of famous patients to his credit, and is revered in his field. Until one day Annie comes along. You see Annie has a a gift that has the power to change her future the more she goes into her past. Anne is a troubled woman and an even more troubled past. She has a gift that can touch the lives of those who can see and feel it. She works with Dr. Marcus to get to the root of her problems using hypnosis. But as she moves farther and farther into her past lives, she realizes that there are things happening which can alter her future. And possibly cause more harm than good. But there is another person out there who knows is out to ruin Marcus and Annie in the process. Let’s hope she can figure out how to stop him in time.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too

Great book! I really liked the idea of a book that is based on hypnosis. Hypnosis is the key to this story. Especially like people who are addicted to hypnosis. In general, there are many opinions about this. Some believe in hypnosis, some do not. Before that, I had never been particularly fond of such a phenomenon, but after reading HYPNOSIS: The Return To The Past decided to learn more. In general, I have always believed that the topic of the ability to return to the past is a good topic, each author describes and reveals in his own way. Author Maria Inês Rebelo described the life of a girl named Pauline, who once came to Mark, who is a famous hypnotist who helped many of her clients and has great trust.
I was impressed by the reading and did not find reading. Maria Ines Rebelo picked up beautiful characters with unique characters that she revealed throughout the book. The book is filled with interesting events and descriptions. I think she should please many. Highly recommended!

The authors writing style is an acquired taste

This was an interesting novel. I have always found hypnosis interesting so I actually bought this book on a whim not really realizing it was a novel instead of an informative read about hypnosis! Ha! Well at least I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the storyline and the characters. The story did jump around quite a bit from the past to present which was a bit confusing and hard to follow. But overall, it was a good read. I have to admit that it took me awhile to get into it and there was more than one moment where I really considered just deleting it. But I pushed through and I’m glad I did. While it didn’t really give me that total immersion feeling it didn’t end up being a total loss either. The authors writing style is definitely an acquired taste. I’m just not quite to the full acquisition.

I know you are not supposed to do this, but I LOVE the cover. I just think it is great art. Back to the review.

I genuinely enjoyed this book. I thought the author brought a fresh take on something I had never read or experienced before. I also very much enjoyed that the author stuck to the story. Too often I feel like authors have a great concept but get sucked into the YA genre or mommy romance books. Not here. Felt like the author has a genuinely consistent and unique story.

While I loved the book, and the cover, there needs to be better editing. I found a few typos, which is not a big deal nor do I think it happened so often it distracted from the story. But it is something that should be fixed.

HYPNOSIS: A Return to the Past, by Maria Inês Rebelo, is a four star read. Marcus Belling is a world-famous hypnotist who takes on a new client, a mysterious woman named Anne Pauline Roux. Anne possesses a rare power when hypnotized, one which will affect both their lives in ways they could never imagine. As Marcus delves into her past with his methodology, his competition, Josef Salvaterra, who uses a different approach, finds out about Anne and decides that this is his opportunity to remove Belling from the playing field and put himself on top of the pecking order. Add into the mix the journey into her past, a taste of the occult, some intrigue, surprises and the unexpected along the way - and you have a formula for an interesting read.

Interesting Read!
The book is based on subject of Hypnosis and past life. The story revolves around Marcus and Pauline. Marcus is a famous Hypnotist who has helped many of his clients and holds lots of credibility. But one day Pauline comes to him as one of her troubled patients. Pauline has troubled present and possibly more troubled past. She has the power to change her future, but drilling it her past. As she is hypnotized and goes into her past, secrets are revealed that can cause more harm, including one other person (Marcus rival, a fellow hypnotist) who has desire to ruin Marcus and her life. The story is really good and grabs attention.

Lately, I have decided to make it my goal to read books with different genres as I tend to stick with murder mysteries. So stumbling across a novel about hypnosis was a perfect change for me. I have always been pretty interested in hypnosis, and I know that authors generally do a lot of research before writing. I really enjoyed the theme of a girl possessing abilities that affected those around her without even knowing about it. You have the powerful and renowned hypnotist that meets her, and you can sense a feeling of awe and jealousy. I really got into this book and would highly recommend it.

Hypnosis: A Return to the Past is a fascinating and intriguing tale. It weaves together elements of hypnosis, alchemy, mystical and occult attributes in a lighthearted and cohesive way. I recommend this book for those who enjoy such fictional works at The Alchemist and The Red Lion.

The story within this book is gripping and top notch as it held my curiosity and intrigue until the very end. Unfortunately the editing falls short and distracted from the overall reader experience. Still, this is an excellent adventure and worthy of your time.

Being hypnotized allows a doctor to find the deep, disturbing events in your past life so they can be addressed and corrected. But what do you do with the individuals in your previous life? Anne Pauline is troubled, but she is a young woman had a gift that special people can feel coming off her. One of those special people is Thaddeus, who also has visited the Forgotten Island while under hypnotizes. But as Anne goes back into her past, past lives, she is changing events that change her future. Plus, she changes the future of others. They are wondering if she is a blessing or a curse.

As a lover of hypnotism, I just had to give this a read and I’m so glad I did.

A tale of love, sabotage and of course lots of hypnotism, it’s written fantastically, and kept my eyes glued to the pages as I read.

Although it does have a mystic feel to it, it also feels very real and makes me wonder how much of it is based on fact and how much is really fiction?

It’s the kind of book that really makes me think about life, the way we should really be and how you always have to prioritize love and compassion over hate and distrust.

It was okay

Hypnosis is the story of Anne’s journey to “fix” her anxiety by using Marcus Belling and his method of hypnosis. The story combines fantasy with mystery but it comes across as all over the place. I wanted to like it. I liked the premise of the book a lot. But it didn’t hold my interest like I hoped it would. I read that this was the author’s first novel and I hope she continues. I think over time she will be a great author.

A most exceptional treatise of the power of the human mind.

I found this book to be totally captivating. I was unable to put it down until i had finished the last chapter. It is a marvelous view of the power of the human mind over all adversities the body may be faced with during one's lifetime. I am working on using some of the technices exposed in this story in the hope of improving some of the difficulties I am experiencing in my own life, and feel the author has given me some great tools even if this was not her intent. Thank you so much Maria!
