When I arrive back at the city dome with Omari in tow, I know it's going to be a challenge. My life isn't exactly ideal for a child, but I'm determined to make it work. I'm resourceful and reasonably intelligent—I'll figure it out.

Right?

But then my already risky life starts to turn even riskier. A job goes wrong. It happens. I shrug it off. But then another goes sideways soon after the first. And then things really start to hit the fan.

I've never been without my fair share of enemies but this is ridiculous!

And then I have to deal with Ashur when he gets wind of what's going on and shows up to insist I come back with him to the safety of his territory.

To make matters worse, Ashur doesn't exactly get along with my friend, Jacob. Never mind that they're both just trying to keep me safe.

I dig in my heels, despite everything. I'm determined to stay, to get to the bottom of what's going on. Nobody is going to drive me out of my home if I can help it.

But things sure are complicated when there's a pissed off Dragon Lord, an ex-mercenary, and a six year old involved.

USA Today bestselling author Miranda Martin writes fantasy and scifi romance featuring heroes with out-of-this-world anatomy that readers call 'larger than life' and smart heroines destined to save the world. As a little girl, she would sneak off with her nose in a book, dreaming of magical realms. Today she brings those fantasies to life and adores every fan who chooses to live in them for a while.

Though born and raised in southern Virginia, Miranda Martin is a veteran who's traveled to places like Korea, Hawaii, and good 'ole Texas. She's since settled in Kansas, the heart of America, with her husband and daughters, a cat, and wishes for a pet dragon or unicorn. When she's not writing, you can still find her tucked away somewhere with a warm blanket and her nose in a book.

This second novel maintains it's edge , and is just as good as the first. Mia retains her independent nature and tenacious a hold on both her lifestyle and her business, Ashur remains tall, dark and protective and Omari is a breath of fresh air and an apt tension breaker. The novel keeps up a consistent pace ensuring the reader doesn't lose any attention to the plot. Although at times the story almost seems to finish off the series, a good injection of fresh material rears it's head towards the end leaving the reader awaiting to see how the next and fnial novel is going to play out, even though the ending is perhaps a foregone conclusion there's a range of possible options.

One thing I will mention is that there is no indication whatever to when book 3 will be released effectively leaving the reader in limbo.

About the Simple Life

Given the title here I'm going to assume y'all will, just as I did, come to certain conclusions about the mysterious "attacker" of Mia's.

Especially as it was all but shouted from the roof tops by Mia's grandmother last book. I'm not Nancy Drew, but I can read some clues pretty well.

That said let's talk instead about the lead up to the obvious. It definitely feels like a second book laying groundwork for an epic conclusion then it does a solid book story of it's own.

There isn't a whole lot of rehashing over the first book, which I appreciate as I'm reading these books back to back. Some necessary bits, but overall it doesn't dwell on rehashing. Omari is simply the most adorable kid this side of Urban Fantasy/PNR and Ashur remains the most attentive hottie.

I did get a bad case of dejavu, as some of this felt familiar to another UF series starring a kicking cool heroine with Daddy issues and unexpected secrets that absolutely love. I think thats normal, considering these are very common tropes, but I guess since UF hasn't been a big genre I've been reading lately it hit me harder.

Since the attacker, and the likely reason for the attacks, was fairly obvious the length of time it took Mia and Ashur to realize it was vexing. I liked seeing Mia try to balance a normal life with her courier duties and maintaining her relationship with Ashur. I was pleased the tension mentioned between Jacob and Ashur is dealt with maturely.

Overall though it's fast paced and heated, it was obviously all building up to the ending revelation from a vaguely surprising source, but with little meat of it's own. Not skippable, because the relationship development is real (and Omari is a master at getting what he wants), but I'm thankful Book 3 is currently available so the wait is short to see the pay off.

2.5 stars

To me, the weakest part of book one was the interactions between Ashur and Mia. Unfortunately for this book, MOST of the book has interactions between them.

I feel like Mia's character disintegrated. All of the cool things I liked about her in book one seemed to disappear as she became a little impulsive and maybe even reckless.

I ended up skimming the last couple of chapters, so my rating is based solely on my personal entertainment level of the book, not anything wrong with the book. It just wasn't for me.

Return to the dome, work and provide for her "new" brother Omari. That is Mia's plan. When her jobs start ending with her hurt, Mia begins to think someone is out to cause her harm. Both Ashur and Jacob are not happy with the current situation. An attack leaves someone close to Mia hurt
badly. Finding out who is behind the attacks doesn't come as a complete shock to Mia but finding out who the anonymous tipper is does. As does finding out what they want from her. This is the second story in this series. I definitely suggest reading book one first so that you know all of the characters and the back story. Looking forward to reading the third and final book.

Mia is back under the dome with Omari, her half brother, in tow. She is back to being package deliverer extra-ordinaire and funnily enough danger has come home with her! She and Ashur are ...well she's not sure what they are but she intends to find out.

Jacob is still the tall, silent, friend with possible benefits if only Ashur would stay out of the picture LOL. But when danger is close, he is the one she reaches out to because she knows Ashur can't get to her in time.

With a kind of love triangle, guardianship of a young child and a fledgling business Mia is a busy lady. But trying to get her ducks in a row and assert her independence may just kill her! Can't wait to see what happens next!

Like the first in this series, I really liked this but felt it lacked a little something. I also felt like the title was a bit... Transparent. I get that there's a theme to the titles but I think it could have been a bit better suited to the majority of the contents. Again, I am definitely going to continue with the series; the plot is really unique and I love the characters, I just think there's a little something not quite perfect. There's plenty of action which I love, but outside of the individual fight scenes there honestly doesn't seem to be enough tension or conflict. It jumps from fight to fight without much build up, making them seem less impactful despite any injuries that might be picked up. A little more tension and atmosphere would catapult this from 4*s to 5*.

I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.

I liked this book a lot more than Dragon Lord (which you really need to read before reading this book). Although there is definitely a lead-in to the next book in the series, I didn't feel like I was left hanging as I did with the first book.

I liked seeing Ashur and Mia together in this story, I got a better feel for them as couple. The flow was really good and I felt like there was plenty of action to keep me turning pages.

Little better than the first one

I still like that Mia is self-reliant even though it seems like she's beginning to become a bit more dependable on Ashur. In my head I know that with paranormal fiction, things progress a little faster than normally but this just seems way too fast. They've only known each other like a month. I can ignore that for the most part. Ashur seems a bit too clingy still. And they always have sexy times on their minds at the wrong time. There is a time and a place unless you have a fetish for dangerous situations. I'm not saying don't read it, these are just my thoughts. Who knows, you might even like it more than I do.

This is the second book in the Dragons & Phoenixes series and pretty much starts off where the first book ends. The plot continues to thicken as it reveals what Mia has to deal with in order to support herself as well as her little brother now. There is plenty of action and suspense surrounding Mia, Ashur, Omari and Jacob that it was hard to put this book down till it was finished. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book

Mia under attack.

Mia finds herself under constant attack by an unknown group of assailants. After she is injured, and her friend Jacob nearly loses his life, Ashur decides to stay with her. But when he insists on accompanying her on her jobs the attacks stop. Unfortunately there is really no mystery as to who is responsible especially if you have read the first book.
It was good to get an answer to one question though; why did nobody carry guns? Still a very pleasant read.

Unwanted attention

Psycho father, 6 year old half brother and a Dragon Lord lover. The plot thickens and speeds up as Mia tries to go back to her business. The attacks keep coming until Jacob gets hurt and they blow up her apartment. They've made her angry and an angry momma dragon is someone the don't want to meet.

I Love this series

So we are back with Mia, Omari and Ashur. Miami’s living in the dome, doing her usual job and taking care of her brother. It’s nice to see her trying to stay independent but not sharp about it. Respect was given on both sides and I loved there’s not any drama or angst in the romance. The action was entertaining, like usual.

Boom!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire! Mia's life just got complicated. Taking on the role of guardian to her little brother has put her life on a very demanding schedule. Through in some bad guys out to get her, and things are a real mess. Good thing there is a hunky Dragon Lord hanging around to help keep her alive.

Okay

Told from Mia's POV, who is of mixed heritage. Mia is a strong independent female character. I felt the story was a little disjointed with repeated information and with the timeline of events. It lacked action and chemistry. The story kept me reading but I was bored of it. Sexual content.

Disappointed...

...that the books aren’t longer. I want to read more. At the same time, Mia is too stubborn and was putting people in danger because of it. And she wasn’t being proactive in trying to solve the mystery until the end. I kind of wanted to punch her in the face several times.

Independent heroine

After book 1, it was interesting that the heroine goes back to the dome and her business with her little brother. But not only is it hard, it's dangerous. She tries to ignore it, stupidly, but has great backup in her neighbor and boyfriend.
Cliffhanger!

Head in the sand?

In this book Mia retreated to what was comfortable. Unfortunately, her newly discovered heritage is following her. She's also trying to juggle a territorial boyfriend, territorial best friend, raising her brother, and work. This book isn't as amusing as the first one, but it has a real edge to it that brings the series more to life.

Hmm. Not sure I am buying the smart strong heroine but keeps getting into trouble but escaping bit. And her dragon hybrid is an afterthought in this book. Why couldn’t she have tried to use it more?

I will keep reading because I want to know how ends but not as good as first book.

What a great series! I've really enjoyed this shifter/urban fantasy! Great plot that keeps you reading and enough twists to make it difficult to guess what comes next! Read on! Don't want to miss this one!

City

The second book is set in this city. Trying to be normal when nothing is after finding out she wasn't alone. She's determined to take care of herself. But others try to hurt and others try to defend her. Her brother is her top priority.

Still a good story but...

Why would she want to return to the dome to continue her case load with a 6 year? Mia needed time but now someone is after her and she is afraid to endanger her brother or neighbor who doesn’t care for her sexy dragon lord boyfriend

While I’m enjoying the series, not much really happened in this book. Well, stuff did happen. The book was entertaining and moved well enough. But as a whole, the plot barely progressed all that much. There were no new developments. I’d have given it four stars if the plot has developed more.

I still like the series and I am going to continue reading it - but in the second book I somehow felt as if the plot was a little rushed... I was missing something even if I can’t define what was missing exactly!
But I still like the style and the characters and the dragons and phoenixes...

Good one

I do love a strong female character with her head tightly screwed on. Mia fights when necessary, protects her loved ones and doesn’t spout off macho nonsense. My kind of girl
