Mike Lynch has had a really bad day. He drives hours to get to a job interview when he knows he won't get the job. When he leaves, he finds he has a flat tire ...and the spare is flat. Hours later, when he's finally on the road home, he drives into a horrific rainstorm. Pulling off, he decides to just rest or sleep for awhile ... until mother nature calls.
And from there, it really gets worse. He witnesses a man shooting and killing another man .. and the shooter happens to see Mike. And Mike is left literally running for his life.
Who was the man who was killed? Who was the shooter? Why was he killed? And who are the two people in the trunk of the victim's car?
This was a breath-taking adventure. Had me hooked from the first page. While Mike desperately looks for answers, more bodies fall and he finds himself in more danger than he ever imagined. The fear, the uncertainty is palpable. The author has a wonderful way of describing all the emotions of someone fighting for his life.
The author has jumped right in and deftly described the characters. I think he'd make a great serial character.
Many thanks to the author/ Bloodhound Books for the advance digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I’ve read Degrees of Darkness by this author and yet again the author has written another brilliant story.
Mike Lynch thought he was having a bad day. Yes it was bad but was about to get so much worse. When he witnesses a shooting at a lay by he ends up driving away in a different car to save himself. He’s even more shocked when he finds the victims daughter, Charlie and her nanny Melissa in the footwell behind him. Melissa begs him not to go to the police and so he finds himself being chased while trying to keep Melissa and Charlie safe and alive. Mike like us has so many questions running around in his head. Thankfully they are all answered as we keep reading.
Although Mike Lynch didn’t come across to me as a strong character straight away he certainly showed how strong and brave he was as I kept reading. I loved that it was told in first person point of view through Mikes eyes.
This book proves to me I don’t read enough action adventure stories. From start to finish its a fast paced thriller. The twists and turns were unpredictable and had me ranting at my kindle. Brilliant storyline that had me thinking I’d love to see this on the television.
Although a different kind of thriller than I normally read I totally loved it. Am looking forward to reading more from this author.
Scream Blue Murder is a fast paced read that had me hanging on for dear life!
Poor Mike is having a bad day which is about to get even worse. Witnessing a cold blooded murder, it leaves himself, Melissa and Charlie, running for their lives.
I loved Mike and I mean LOVED! What a fabulous character. He is a character that goes from strength to strength. Troubled, grumpy but oh so loveable. He is a definite unsung hero with Melissa and Charlie putting their lives in his hands.
If you love a story jam packed full of action then you really don’t need to look any further. This has it by the bucket loads. I’ve not read many books like this so can only liken it to films like Commando and the first Rush Hour.
Scream Blue Murder is an adrenaline fuelled read that will have you on the edge of your seat. With plenty to keep you hooked and a few surprises in store makes this one unmissable crime thriller.
You know the sort of thing - innocent bystander, in the wrong place at the wrong time, gets caught up in a series of events beyond their control and has their world shattered and their life turned upside down. Harlan Coben and Linwood Barclay excel at this sort of story. Yes you usually need to suspend disbelief a teeny bit as they cheat death and destruction in every chapter, but hell, they are SO entertaining. Well you can add Tony J. Forder to that list of authors. I've read a few of his books now and have not been disappointed. One of the most harrowing books I have read was his Degrees of Darkness. Scream Blue Murder was not as dark as that one but it was totally gripping and I just couldn't put it down.
Mike Lynch stops his car on a highway to take a leak (discreetly of course). As he approaches his car again sees a man kneeling on the ground at the rest stop and another pointing a gun at him. Bang, bang and he's dead. Mike is shitting himself, thinks he'll be next. He can't get to his own car without the killer seeing him so he jumps into the victims car which is closer and floors the accelerator tearing out of there. When he finally reckons he's safe he stops the car and checks it out. That's when he sees two pairs of frightened eyes staring at him from the rear footwell.
The eyes belong to the dead man's daughter, Charlie, and her nanny, Melissa. Mike wants to go straight to the police but Melissa argues that Charlie is scared and exhausted and asks that they leave it until the morning. By then they see the news reports on the TV and Mike sees that one of the policemen investigating the murder from the National Crime Agency (NCA) was the shooter. Now they can't trust the police and must work out what to do by themselves. The rest of the book is cat and mouse adrenalin charged action as Mike and Mel must outwit both the police and the mob, for the dead man was a mobster and his family will be seeking retribution. Mike's name is out there as his car was left at the scene. Soon he's being accused of heinous crimes. Can Mike and Melissa and little Charlie prevail?
I am bold over with every book that I read by Tony Forder because he is so versatile with his good guys and bad guys. Do you ever have one of those days when you think, well things just can’t get any worse, then they do. Well Mike Lynch could beat you hands down as his day went on, having one disaster after another in every day sort of stuff was nothing to how his day would end. In this story the reluctant hero Mike is a bloke in the wrong place, at the wrong time and witnesses a murder. Then he tries to make a get away from danger as jumps into the dead victim’s car unaware that he has two additional passengers in the back. It is the start of a terrifying journey for all the three occupants of the car. Now there are some rather tender moments in this story that sort of just doesn’t pull at your heart strings, they tie them into knots. Charlie, one of the accidental occupants, is just a little girl and she wants to go home to see her daddy. Unfortunately some things are just impossible. Charlie had Mike pegged as grumpy early on, although she clearly really liked and trusted him. Charlie’s nanny was the second occupant. Together Mike and Melissa try to piece together the reasons why her boss has not just been randomly murdered but executed and it soon becomes clear that they can trust very few people. This is a super fast paced read, with a superb story line and a body count that just kept mounting up. There was far more to Mike than first meets the eye, everyone has a past and his gives him the ability to call on a couple of buddies to lend a hand when the going gets really tough. There are some pretty hefty players in this game of cat and mouse that are determined to eliminate any trace that leads back to them. The good guys are brilliant and the bad guys determined which makes for yet again a top notch read from this author. Loved it!
Serendipitously, just as the second book in this series became available on NetGalley, there was a promotion making this available for free on Amazon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy to buy books for a reasonable price, it’s just difficult to justify when I already have so many awaiting my attention. I had seen this author mentioned on the UKCBC Facebook page and am trying to support their authors, so am very pleased to report that this is a fantastic read.
On his way home from a failed job interview, Mike Lynch’s bad day gets substantially worse when he witnesses an execution-style killing at a roadside lay by. Escaping in the nearest car, he is horrified to discover a terrified young woman cradling a young girl hiding in the footwell. Hiding out in a motel, he discovers from the TV news that he is now the prime suspect, the victim was a notorious gang boss with a psychotic brother, and that the killer is a senior police officer. At every turn, the situation escalates, and Mike starts to suspect that something bigger than a gangland killing is going on. Fortunately, Mike turns out to be just the right man to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and has some friends with very useful skills.
Definitely an action/conspiracy thriller rather than a crime novel, this had everything I love in the genre: a brave resourceful but sarcastic hero, a gripping plot with some nasty baddies, a best buddy in the Joe Pike mould who I desperately hoped would survive, non-stop action and a hugely satisfying ending. The writing is smooth and effective, with a mix of first and third person narrative that works very well. I liked the way that in spite of a difficult past, Mike gradually lets down his barriers and realises that he’s not the selfish loser he thinks he is. I’m very happy to know I can read the next book soon, and will be looking out for the authors’ other works. All the stars.
I read this book based on the reviews it had – it had some corkers! What a read – you’re thrown straight into the action with one hell of a prologue. My mouth was hanging open as I wondered, did that actually just happen?!
Then we meet Mike whose bad day gets worse when he witnesses a murder and takes a rather unconventional escape route. What follows is a fantastic game of cat and mouse, good vs evil, and a story that keeps hold of your attention.
I like how the story is mainly told from Mikes POV as it lets you into his mind and his thought processes. This is action packed, full of twists and turns expertly moulded together to produce a thriller that stands out in the ‘thriller’ genre.
Wow!! What can I say I was totally addicted from the prologue.
Mike Lynch is a damaged character. Drink problem, failed marriage…. He is struggling through life when, on a long drive, he pulls over in a lay-by for a rest. His day has been plagued by bad luck and as he is resting he needs to make a call of nature at the same time as the heavens open. What follows is a sequence of events that see him stealing a car that turns out to have a woman and child hiding in the back.
As events unfold the reader is taken on one hell of a journey accompanied by corruption, violence and a whole whirlwind of emotions. Mike finds himself being chased and it is a challenge to keep himself and his charges safe. He calls in favours but despite all the help he and his friends are at a complete loss to work out what is going on and why everyone seems to be after his blood.
The characters are complex and develop well through the course of the story as we grow to love Mike and start rooting for him and his friends through battle after battle. With no way of predicting the outcome the adrenaline keeps on coming right to the very end.
This is a different kind of thriller but one I really enjoyed and I am hoping for more from this author. Thank you very much to Bloodhound Books who gave me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book.
Ooooh this book was so good after I had finished I sat back and thought about it - I couldn't do the review straight away I needed time to compose my though for the review!!!
The pace was fast and I loved it, each page I was turning was making me tense as the story developed and I needed to know what happened but in equal measure didn't want the book to end - superb writing and one of my top reads of the year!!! I read it in one sitting being supplied with hot drinks and chocolate by my husband I just wanted to sit and finish it - I was gripped!!
This is the second book I have read by this author and they have both been absolutely brilliant books that grip you and don't let you go!! Another excellent 5 star read!!!! I really do recommend that any crime fiction fans look to get themselves a copy of this one!
"Scream Blue Murder" is a fast paced action Thriller from Tony J Forder. This is the first book that I've read by this author - I absolutely loved it! The main character Lynch started off as quite a meek and unassuming man, a little grumpy and standoffish. But as the story stormed on, he became heroic and a guy you could really depend on. The book is full of nail biting action, more twists than the cyclone that pulled Dorothy's house, landing with a heavy impact on my mind. A fabulous read which has enticed me to read all his other books to date.
Having read Tony's previous books I naively thought I knew what to expect. This is an author to look out for, as he can turn his pen to different genre styles within the Crime Fiction Umbrella. This is an extremely well written, action packed book. With great opening scenes to set up the plots. Melissa and Charlie bring a clever characterisation to the story. I really felt for the predicament they innocently found themselves in, being caught up within the grimness, Melissa does a fabulous job trying to keep Charlie safe and calm. Mike is a fascinating protagonist, and I loved getting to know him the more I read on, he really grew on me, and I enjoyed that he wasn't a jolly bloke, would you be in his situation? As the drama unfolds you are taken on a twisted journey. This is a dark story, that evolves in to a monster of a crime read, I was thoroughly engrossed in the way the story evolved, it is a thriller with a unique difference, that should be shouted about. If you like an engaging thriller of a read this is definitely one for you.
Tony Forder is a very talented writer but this book did not live up to my expectations. It is a good read but not a riveting read. Mike Lynch is struggling with a failed marriage and alcohol problems. He stops in a lay by for a rest whilst on a car journey and ends up stealing a car, as you do. Unfortunately for him, there is a woman and a child hiding in the car. Mike ends up being chased and enlists the help of his friend Terry. I just couldn't gel with the character of Mike and the constant interaction with Mel really irritated me.The book is fast paced and there is plenty of action. A good holiday read. Perhaps there will be a follow up but not for me.Thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy.
WOW! When I was approached by Sarah to see if this would be a book I would like to read, I all but snapped her hand off. A couple of months ago I read Degrees of Darkness, and when the offer of reading Scream Blue Murder came along, I have to admit to not reading the synopsis. I went with the fact that I had read one book by this author and loved it, so would trust that he could deliver again. So as I read this one, I was not expecting to come out with so many what the hell’s, no way’s, bloody hell’s, and what the f.. well you get the idea. I was also glad I read it on my kindle, if it had been in book format I would have lost my page so many times, as I threw my hands up in the air on several occasions. I must quickly add at this point, all these exclamation are good ones, I loved it so much. I rated his last book as a 5 star on Amazon and Goodread’s, now want to know where the button is to add a 6 star review.
Anyway, to the story. Mike Lynch has had a really bad day. When you think of the phrase “wrong time, wrong place” this is Mike, he really was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He only pulled into a lay-by to stretch his legs, when he witnesses a murder, he sees one option, to jump into the waiting car and drive off. The car is the victims car and he discovers it has two passengers hiding behind the seat, a young woman and a child, they add to the problems. What follows is something much more than a problem, it becomes a matter of survival.
The author has managed to create an deeply intricate and twisted plot line. There are so many stories and threads that have been manipulated to create a very fast paced, action packed, well written story. There are quite a few characters in this book, but the main focus is really on Mike and Melissa, how they work through to discover the why’s and the who’s of this murder. As they get to know each other the reader is given a great background into their histories, and what makes them tick, but more importantly the reasons behind their actions and reactions.
The author has not missed a beat with this book, well in my opinion he hasn’t. He has covered so many angles, throwing so many curve balls, giving outcomes that I did not see coming at all, and when they were delivered it was without warning, with a punch.
Highly recommend this book to readers who like action packed, hard hitting, hold nothing back murder, mystery, thriller, crime books. It has memorable characters, is addictive from start to finish, with great plots and twists and is well written.
When Mike Lynch stops his car one night ...bladder bursting....he hears a pop pop sound....only to turn around to see a killer in the middle of the road...As his instincts kick in...there is only one choice...to flee...and this he does in the victims car...But Mike is not alone, hidden in the back are Charlie the small daughter of the man who was murdered and Charlie's nanny Melissa...They both decide to try and rest up before deciding what to do next....each wary round the other till Mike sees the face of the killer and knows they are in deep shit....and so much danger...Now they must gather their wits and Mike calls in a favour....but this favour brings death with it....and now it seems they have not just the law after them....After calling in one more favour...on the run with a small child and a young woman...there is even more danger ahead...Mike is about to face demons far worse than his friend the bottle...But even with the help of one of his oldest comrades will he make it out alive? Can he keep Charlie safe....? Who wants him dead ....? My God I raced through the last few chapters of this book...Mike Lynch ,loner...drinker...thinker ...and hero...Tony Forders Scream Blue Murder is a nailbiting pageturner that will take you softly into a world of deciet....dark corners ...and Murder... And what a storyteller......
You may recall I was raving about Tony Forder a few weeks ago when I read Degrees of Darkness and couldn’t sing his praises highly enough. So it was a foregone conclusion I would jump on Scream Blue Murder as soon as I had a copy.
So did this live up to my expectations? Yes, it did but it has also proved what a talented writer Tony is. This takes on a different style yet he still manages to excel.
Holy Moly you are in for the ride of your life with Scream Blue Murder. It begins with a bang and just doesn’t relent. Action packed, race against time, with some extremely nasty folk that I wouldn’t want to meet on a dark night!
Mike Lynch is having the day from hell which only manages to deteriorate further when he innocently stops the car to take a pee and events unfold that begin the ball rolling. I developed a real fondness for Mike, he gives the impression of a grumpy old man who couldn’t give a toss but underneath he is a diamond. Melissa and six year old Charlie are the two people he begrudgingly has to take under his wing. The relationship between the two females is endearing.
This is a real test of honesty and trust in a world of corruption. Yes, it’s a crime thriller but includes plenty of action especially involving MI5 and government agencies along with ex-forces men. A riveting mix of entertainment that won’t allow you to pause for breath. Who can survive the flying bullets and come out unscathed? I really enjoyed it and have no hesitation recommending it.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Sarah Hardy for my copy and including me in the blog blitz.
Mike Lynch’s day goes from bad to Die Hard-like territory after witnessing an execution-style murder at a roadside stop in Tony Forder’s Scream Blue Murder. And his predicament becomes even more complicated as he manages to escape in the victim’s car, only to find down the road that he is not alone in the vehicle. So begins Forder’s adrenaline rush of a book balanced between dark crime story and the murkier world of covert actions. This book is a fun, rollercoaster ride of a read, smoothly put together by Forder, who deftly manages the shifts between thrilling action, technical jargon and emotional breakthroughs in the narrative. As evidenced in his Bliss series, Forder is a master with characterization. And characters like Lynch, Terry Cochran, and even Rhino, Haystacks and Dawson (not a law firm) quickly capture your attention and feeling. You want to learn more about them and where their lives will take them, always the sign of a good book to me. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars, mainly due to a minor quibble, but I thank Forder for opening up a new facet of crime for me- that of the action packed thriller.
I happened to pick up and read the second in the series before this, the first. It didn’t make any difference. A good series can be read in any order as long as each is a separate story, well tied up. These two certainly are. After accidentally witnessing a murder, Mike Lynch finds himself the subject of a manhunt and calls on his ex-military friend, Terry, to help. It’s a high-octane adventure story, very exciting in places, and always pacey. A really enjoyable read.
Audio version of this book 📕 - a good gripping storyline if unbelievable at times , narrator was dreadful, robotic and did not differentiate between characters which made it hard to follow sometimes. If the plot hadn’t been as entertaining as it was would probably have had to stop Listening!!
When Mike Lynch stops in a lay-by due to bad weather, he leaves his car for a toilet break. Little does he realise that he will soon be involved in a game of cat and mouse with killers.
As he heads back to his car, he witnesses a murder. Lynch has no choice but to take the victims car and try to escape from the killers. Once clear, he is shocked to find Melissa and Charlie in the back of the car! Lynch has to work out a way to protect himself, Melissa and Charlie.
This book is action packed from start to finish and I found myself on the edge of my seat many times. This is an excellent storyline and some fantastic characters throughout. A fast paced book that will take you on one heck of a ride!
I would like to say a big thank you to Sarah Hardy at Bloodhound books for issuing me with a review copy of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and also for inviting me to participate on the blog tour.
The tag line on the cover of this book is "an action packed thriller" and I can 100% wholeheartedly agree! When I finished this book, I think I exhaled and realised I hadn't breathed normally for what felt like the entire book. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat. I was so invested in the characters and their story that I felt I was on their journey with them experiencing it all.
Tony J Forder knows how to write an action packed thriller. That is very obvious and this is the type of book I love to read. Action packed with characters you genuinely care about and are praying it all ends well for them in the end.
There were some added twists that had me gasping (also another favourite of mine!) and kept me up reading until the early hours.
I found this to be a well written book that did keep me guessing in places and I can't recommend enough. I can't wait to read more...
Oh wow wow what a brilliant gripping read. I swear I spent majority of reading this book with my heart in my throat and also sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what would happen next.
The story plot was jam packed, non stop action pretty much throughout. There was a fair few scenes, moments, where I was like OMG what just happened or did that seriously just happen. I literally felt like I watching a film at times. I seriously could not turn the pages fast enough.
There was brilliant characterisation throughout, all so very well written. It literally got to the point where you didn't know who to trust or believe!
I can safely say that this book exceeded my expectations, as it did not turn out or play out, how I was expecting at all. It was jam packed full of action pretty much throughout and as for the ending and the twist(s) well I certainly didn't see them coming.
If you like highly action packed thrillers, then this is a book for you.
OMG, having only read the Bliss series by Tony J Forder, I couldn't wait to dive into something a little different, and boy did Tony J Forder go all out in Scream Blue Murder. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but what a man to be in that predicament. While some could say this stretched the realms of possibility a little, I didn't care less. This was action-packed and the plot just went bam, bam, bam. Mike Lynch was a great man who could have just as easily given up, but he didn't. He fought to the bitter end, despite the personal losses he would ultimately suffer. I couldn't stop listening to this one and the narrator did a great job in keeping the listener glued to their earbuds. Once again, Tony J Forder has hit the jackpot with this jackpot and I was thrilled to see that book two is out already, guess what I'm reading next...bring on more Mike Lynch.
Oh.my.god!!! What a book! The idiot that I am forgot to write this blitz in my diary which, thanks to the publishers incredible organisational skills, I was prompted on social media last night. Cue having my nose in 'Scream Blue Murder' all of last night. Am I complaining though? Am I heck! Whether I am a fast reader or not is irrelevant as I just could not put this book down, therefore I was speeding through it like goodness knows what!
The story begins with a teaser prologue - it certainly kept me guessing that's for sure! Between that and the end of the first chapter, it felt as though I had a constant frown on my face. It seemed like such a big jump between the prologue and the 'now', I honestly thought I had missed a few pages!
I kept turning the pages thinking 'what the hell is going on?'. Even though I couldn't seem to work out what was happening, what the motive was, who exactly was in the firing line even though there were people after Lynch, I was 110% engrossed in the intensity of the storyline. The jam-packed, high intensity storyline kept me on the edge of my seat whilst also managing to fray my nerves. Clueless yet completely addicted.
About 60 or so percent in, the storyline cranked up yet another notch. Something was about to go down with Lynch and Melissa, but what, I had no idea. The author described certain goings on around and due to the way in which the author fed those descriptions to his readers, my heart rate shot up in anticipation. I have no idea why I was feeling apprehensive as I wasn't even in the firing line yet the author made me feel as though I was slap bang in the centre of all the action! Genius!
From that moment, whenever I had to go outside to let my dog out for a tinkle, I began jumping at the slightest noise. Looking left and right in the garden to make sure that there was nobody about to shoot me. Yes, you may laugh as whilst it is hilarious now, I forgot to switch off from the book before I went outside so as far as I was concerned, any movement I made was still part of the storyline. If that makes any sense at all!
'Scream Blue Murder' kept me in suspense until the very last page. I'm not going to lie, I had my suspicions about several of the characters involved in the book as there had to be a lot more to the story. It was clear that someone was lying but I couldn't for definite say who. I had a hunch who it might be and due to the risk of spoilers I shan't tell you who I thought it might be, but oh my gosh!
A fantastic, well written, suspenseful and spine tingling novel, which left me finishing the book with my hand over my mouth in shock. Absolutely brilliant.
Yet another fast paced gripping thriller from Tony J Forder. The situation Mike Lynch finds himself in when he stops in a lay by, results in an exciting breath taking, roller coaster ride! There is a twist at every turn in Mikes dangerous journey to prove his innocence. Highly recommend this thrilling read.
Mike is having a bad day and it’s about to get worse.
I am kicking myself that it has taken me so long to read Tony J Forder. I thoroughly enjoyed Scream Blue Murder because of the fast pace and the super exploration of the murky worlds of criminals and those in high office. There’s a scary presentation of just how far corruption can reach and I think reading Scream Blue Murder has opened my eyes to the potential for underhand behaviour in many levels.
I was fascinated by the way Scream Blue Murder considers that we never really know ourselves or how we might react until we are put under pressure. It was this gradual uncovering of Mike’s character and the background to his personality that really interested me, even though there is a cracking, fast paced plot to retain a reader’s attention without this added extra intensity. I felt Mike was a man with depth and breadth whom I thoroughly appreciated getting to know. I’m now desperate to read the next book to find out more. In amongst the violence and corruption that rattles through this story is the balance of Charlie’s innocence and her positive impact on the jaded Mike. I felt this element added humanity and depth to an already enticing read.
That said, it would be unfair not to praise the fabulous plot too. It is so exciting and thrilling that I found myself holding my breath as my pulse raced. I genuinely had no idea what would happen next or how Mike’s problems might resolve themselves – or if indeed they would at all. Tony J Forder knows exactly how to keep the reader guessing and their heart rate elevated. I couldn’t tear myself away as I simply had to know what happened next.
I’m concerned that Scream Blue Murder might prove to be one of those quiet books that never gets the recognition it truly deserves. I’ve read so many books that have huge success, such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and in my opinion, Scream Blue Murder is far better, more believable, and more exciting. I really recommend it and would love to see it snapped up for television. If this is the quality of Tony J Forder’s writing then I need to read all his books as soon as I can. Cracking stuff!
After reading Degrees of Darkness I couldn't wait to read Tony J Forder's next book. Luckily I didn't have to wait too long and I eagerly picked up Scream Blue Murder. Where to start well all I can say is that my heart was pumping as fast as Mike's must have been it was such a good opening to this story. I kept thinking what would I do in the same situation and this continued pretty much all the way through. This story had me questioning all the events it was like a great big puzzle and I couldn't wait to see the it all play put.
Secrets and intrigue are intricately weaved into this story and I was constantly wondering what was in store next. The way that Mike reacts to every situation is brilliant and even if mistakes are made he always tries his best to come up with something. The twists and turns were perfect, sorry for being pretty vague with the storyline but it would be a shame to spoil the plot.
Scream Blue Murder is pretty intense at times and it's safe to say I was sitting straight up on my sofa waiting for what would happen next. The characters are well written so much so that I was completely wrapped up in their crazy situation. There is tension galore but also some lesser moments of action where the characters personalities are revealed even more which I loved.
Take a deep breath and prepare yourself for a brilliant rollercoaster ride of a story!
With thanks to Sarah at Bloodhound Books for the invite to join the tour and a copy of the book. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I really didn't know what I was letting myself in for when I started reading Scream Blue Murder and just how affecting it would turn out to be! I loved the sound of the blurb and I expected a fast paced thriller. What I wasn't anticipating though was just how invested I'd become in some of the characters' lives, particularly Mike's. I didn't much like Mike at first. He's not in a particularly good place in life, divorced, separated from his daughter and although he is now sober he must constantly struggle to avoid alcohol. After he witnesses a shocking murder his life quickly spirals out of control but gradually another side of his character is revealed and I found myself rooting for him. The relationship that develops between Mike, Melissa and her charge, Charlie is fascinating and really quite touching. Although very much Mike's story, Melissa is a likeable, intriguing character who is also transformed by their ordeal. The gripping plot sees Mike and Melissa forced to go on the run, thrust together but unsure who they can trust. As Mike reaches out to figures from his past, the body count rises and soon he must not only confront the present danger he finds himself in but also begin to come to terms with former events. I loved this very contemporary thriller where modern surveillance methods mean fleeing from the situation is next to impossible, there's something almost claustrophobic about the knowledge that your every move can be traced. Mike really doesn't know just how much trouble he is in, or what his enemies are capable of, but we, the readers are given glimpses into the plans of those desperate to catch up with our protagonists making the tension almost unbearable as a gripping cat and mouse game is played out where the stakes couldn't be higher. These little vignettes, the cast of suspects, red herrings and complex plot add a cinematic feel to the novel as little by little the shocking truth is revealed. I'm always hopeful that an action thriller will set my pulse racing and Scream Blue Murder is a total adrenaline rush! The creeping sense of dread when it looks as if Mike's plans aren't as foolproof as he thought, the sinister reason for not just the first murder but the ensuing deaths and the high octane final showdown meant Scream Blue Murder is a book I couldn't put down. It's a book that puts the thrills into thriller, dark, intelligent, intense and highly recommended.
Mike is having a day from hell. A long car trip to a job interview that he knows he is not going to get. On the way back home he decides to stop for a pit break when he witnesses a murder. Unfortunately the killer sees Mike and comes after him next. Mike takes off in the victim’s car and discovers Charlie and Melissa, the victim’s daughter and nanny.
Against his better judgement, Mike doesn’t take them to the police and finds himself with a target on his back. Mike calls in his friends to try and figure out what is happening. But this is going to be one tangled mess to straighten out. Thank goodness that is one thing Mike is good at.
After reading Degrees of Darkness, I couldn’t wait to get my grubby little hands on Scream Blue Murder. Although this is the same author, Tony Forder shows his skills by coming up with a great thriller that is from a different angle than Degrees of Darkness.
You are drug along into this fast paced story just as lost as Mike. But the answers come at a good pace and you are kept amped up trying to figure out what is going on and will come sliding in sideways to an amazing ending.
This is a great story that will keep you up late rushing to the end. I loved every moment of this book and can’t wait for the next book from Tony Forder.
I received Scream Blue Murder from Bloodhound Books for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
Scream Blue Murder by Tony J. Forder features Mike Lynch. Mike has had a bad day and it is about to get worse. He stops for a pee and witnesses a murder of a major crime boss. He drives off in the car of the murdered man, Ray Dawson, and meets Mel and Charlie and they are then on the run for their lives. I have read Tony’s DI Bliss books and Fifteen Coffins, both quite different characters and settings and these are superb reads. Mike Lynch is a different character again but again a superb read. There are a few surprises throughout which kept the story very entertaining. It is an action packed story but an excellent read. Criminals, security services – and then there’s Mike, with a little help from his friends. Well worth a read when it is re-released on 19 April.
