A worthy successor and addendum to the Bram Stoker classic!!
I was very curious about how the story from the never-before , never-after classic Dracula (I am a hard core fan of the book since my teens!!) was dealt with in this bundle! It was an extremely fascinating, interesting and brilliant handling of the original story that kept me going until I had finished the book. I was very pleased that the story matter did not get diluted, corrupted and soppy like several of the books that came out!
It was very refreshing to meet the same characters along with new, endearing ones, both human and vampire types! It was lovely to meet Mina's parents, Gabriel, Emma, Anara, Radu, Szabina and scary to meet the other unknown ones. Even the licenses that have been taken by the author are very appealing. I loved reading about young Van Helsing as it brought a picture of the actor who played that role.
Even after reading this 3 - volume bundle, the reader is left with the wish for the story to have continued. Instead of thinking of a vampire-less world as an ideal world, the reader ( at least I did! ) comes to the conclusion that it is okay to have good vampires living alongside humans!
Bravo, L.D. Huffington, you did a marvelous job of constructing, adding and making an alluring, charming book. Usually, most of the take-offs on the original story make me froth at the mouth ( as I think that the original is one of those be-all and end-all of the vampire classics) but your bundle has me nodding happily!
I read the 3 books over. 24 hour period. The characters were brought alive in the stories. The plot was different. Well thought out. A climactic ending. Hope this series will be continued. I highly recommend this set of books especially if you like vampire stories
Beast of London This book starts off with a stuffy Victorian feel but quickly morphs into something far more exciting. The POV character, Mina, was raised outside of traditional society and although she wears its trappings well and is engaged to a wonderful man of society whom she truly loves, she is not sure this is the life she is suited for. As with many of these books, she is written as a woman far ahead of her time.
When her past come barreling back into her life, Mina finds herself on a life-altering adventure with elements of Dracula, Van Helsing, lycanthopic legends, Jack the Ripper and even a bit of The Beagle and Mr. Flycatcher. The book maintained a theme though out of finding scientific explanations for the fantastic. Lots of action, and danger including violence and bloodshed.
Fortress of Blood In many ways this was the second half of The Beast of London. That book set the stage and opened the mysteries. This book followed events as Mina and company worked to save Jonathan. The huge reveal at the end of book one was explored as Mina learned first hand more about the vampire threat they are facing and bonds with allies were forged.
There was quite a bit of action, but many of the battles in this book were internal and interpersonal and as a result the book became more introspective and moody at times. A different aspect of the vampires was being explored. The ending was well written and satisfying. I really liked the way it wrapped back to some of the opening scenes from book 1 and provided closure to not only to Jonathan's situation but other events left hanging in London.
Realm of Night In defeating one enemy, were they only strengthening another? Mina, Abe, and associates are tackling their fiercest enemy yet and they will all be changed for the encounter. Some more than others. This book delves into the darker psychological elements introduced in book 2. They discover a secret weapon in the fight, but using it comes with great risk.
The characters on this team have grown on me over the course of this series. At times infuriating and others endearing. For how introspective they can be I wish some of them would think a little before diving into action (Mina, I'm looking at you!) but I suppose that impulsiveness adds to the drama and intrigue.
This is such a fantastic re-imagination of Dracula! The central plot is really well-done, the characters truly engaging and the writing enthralling (no pun intended :P )
Once I began to listen, I only stopped to sleep, I simply couldn't stop listening. I adore Mina, she is one of those characters that have a perfect mix of strength and vulnerability. She's utterly human and easy to understand. But I also really like the whole bunch of characters, those who were there from the beginning and those that join along the journey.
There is a lot of suspense, some shocking reveals and even a bit of romance and a great ending... which, even as it works really well as a final stop, I really hope it isn't. I'm not even close to done with this characters :D
The job done by Danielle Cohen with the narration is truly great.
I just found this author i got the first book free read it and loved it then bought this bundle. It's the story of Mina and can Helsing and their friends as they try to take down the most powerful vampires. The vampires are ravaging Europe and killing all of humanity it has turned to war and now Mine and her friends are working together and every other then they may lose a friend but it looks good but then a twist comes and bad things start to happen. I loved this series so much i hate it ended. I sure hope the writer has books like these in her mind for the future. She does her research well and her characters stay true to themselves. Can't wait to read more from her.
Incredibly immersive tale using Stoker's Dracula as a basis.
Great characters with compelling backgrounds. Maleficent, deceitful jeopardy on all sides, plunges Mina Murray into a world beyond most humans conception. A world still reeling from the gruesome atrocities of Jack the Ripper.
Beautifully stylized series set in Victorian Europe you accompany Mina's journey taken to dark places indeed, making many discoveries particularly about herself as you go.
A great thoughtful perilous series for anyone interested in the genre. I loved it.
A mesmerizing tale of monsters and those who stand against them. Though characters are taken from Bram Stoker's classic tale, the story is wonderfully original. The narrator chosen couldn't have been a more perfect fit. You could believe she was Mina Murray telling of her own adventures. The best traditional vampire tale I've encountered. I received a free review copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.
The books get decidedly worse as they go on. Book 1 was decent, book 2 slightly less so, and the 3rd one was so hard to finish. The author spends 100 words describing the actions and thoughts of the characters, another 100 on the furniture and trappings around the characters, and then will kill off a character or resolve a major plot point in 25 words or less. It was rather jarring.
I enjoyed following the story of Mina Murray. Several times I was pleasantly shocked by a new revelation or story twist. I actually caught myself smiling and at times my jaw dropped. There is a ton of action and tension in the series. Overall it was fulfilling to enter this story and follow it through to the end.
I thought the premise of this book was interesting, to get to see Mina Murray's side of the Dracula story. But the execution wasn't very good, it is kind of obvious that this is either self published or there was a rather mediocre editor involved. The language is stilting, the characters are really flat and uninteresting, and the plot was kind of predictable as soon as you get to know the settings. It kept me entertained enough to finish all three books, but just barely.
