Talia Hibbert is a New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author whose books are available in 15 languages.
Best known for her Brown Sisters series, Talia writes spicy, inclusive romance novels starring complicated characters who make readers feel seen. Talia's debut romantasy will hit shelves in Summer 2026.
A typically cantankerous Brit, Talia's hobbies include chugging cups of tea, eating too many biscuits, and complaining bitterly about the weather.
I got this free through the author's newsletter which is basically like being subscribed to Christmas, she gives so much stuff away.
This novella features Dionne, who is in the middle of Operation Atonement aka apologising to all the people she's ghosted in her life. There are a lot of them because her default is to walk away from situations where she feels trapped. She's not a weak person, more "you know what, screw this", but it has left a trail of distress. So she's getting back in touch with old schoolfriends and the fiance whose ring she posted back through the letterbox, and she goes to the school reunion and meets Adam who is posing as their mutual friend's boyfriend. (Against all genre odds, this works out m/f).
Adam and Dionne have a hot, intense relationship, and it's really notable that Dionne's sex work isn't a problem for Adam. But he is nevertheless makes a wrong assumption about other stuff, and once again Dionne walks.
It's a good premise though I think could have been more widely developed--we come into Operation Atonement when it's mostly done. I particularly liked that we see Dionne learn both that she shouldn't treat people that way, but also realise she deserved better treatment. Some people do, it turns out, need ghosting and blocking. I always enjoy Hibbert's writing and this is an enjoyable read with a properly flawed heroine who keeps our sympathy all the same.
Talia Hibbert is taking romance twitter by storm, and I'm getting caught up on her backlist since she is writing so much right now. The first book of hers I read wasn't entirely my cup of tea but it wasn't because of the writing, and I was pleased that this one held up. Short, sexy story about a woman who is looking for redemption from people she hurt or pushed away over the years (hence the title). Dionne has estranged herself from people as a defense mechanism because she's been judged by her choice of career (she's... a plus size model, basically? but has done nudity? I feel like I might have missed what exactly she does. There are references to sex work.) Adam is a sports agent and they meet through their mutual friend, Eli, at Dionne and Eli's school reunion.
This is really more of a novella length, so it didn't really explore Adam's background and family too much--nor was there much resolution with one his brothers who was a jerk to Dionne--and I wish the story had gone into more depth about Dionne's past relationships (familial, platonic, and romantic in nature) for which she was seeking forgiveness. But I'm giving it a higher rating than I probably would have otherwise because I really liked the heroine a lot. I suspect this isn't Hibbert's best, but she's got a lot of talent.
I've had this book for months and I have no idea why I took so long to read it. It's great! It has all of the makings of a standard rom-com but Talia Hibbert swerves at the best possible moments (the night club scene!). I adored the h and the H. They were opposites in every way and they were delightful together. There is a bit of self inflicted drama but even that plays out in a interesting way. Over all this was time well spent.
I love that this book features a strong confident plus size heroine. I wish the author delved more into Adam's family and past. What makes romance novels unique is that there are usually two main characters. Not a lead, and a supporting character because love stories should be a partnership. I would love to read a book by this author that thoroughly fleshes out both of the main characters.
Also, the plot twist/secret/scandal was fairly anticlimactic. All in all, a nice quick read.
Stop what you’re doing and subscribe to Talia Hibbert’s newsletter right now. Not only will her opening lines bring you an incredible amount of joy (they range from “Salutations, my melty marshmallow” to “Hello, my precious pigeon”), but you’ll also receive a free short story and this delightful novella. Operation Atonement introduces readers to Dionne Pryce, a woman whose perfectly put-together appearance masks the fact that she’s slowly but surely rebuilding her life. In her quest to make amends and reconnect with an old school friend, she meets Adam McLoughlin, an Irishman who tempts her to break her no relationships rule. This story is at turns steamy and sweet, and features a heroine with an enviable wardrobe who is learning to let her guard down. I just started reading Hibbert’s work earlier this year, and this taste of her work was the perfect reminder I needed to continue reading my way through her backlist. —Kelly (excerpted from Bookish's Staff Reads)
I got this as a freebie when i signed up for the newsletter! It was thouroughly enjoyabke and i finished it immediately. On the other hand, now it's been a week or three and i could not, for the life of me, remember what this had been about. Reading other reviews that lay out the plot, it is coming back to me slowly, but i guess the important thing has been said. I liked it, i'm recalling it now and the plot was fine, the book was better (characters A+) but it was, apparently, not that memorable to me. I am still really grateful i got to read this and i do really love Talia's writing and all her diversity. I guess it was probably a 3.5 star read rounded up, but due to the time passing maybe i'd round it down now.
3 stars | This was given to me for free when I subscribed to the author's newsletter. I think it must have been one of the first books Hibbert ever wrote, so I'm not going to judge it too harshly. It was okay. I didn't particularly feel connected to the characters, the plot wasn't my fave and I won't even comment on the smut, except to say it wasn't the worst I've read :p
Operation Atonement is a short free novella that people get from Talia Hibbert's VIP mailing list. This story is all about a girl looking for redemption for a life she lived and a guy who wants to give her the world. It's very short and simple. I enjoyed how easy it was to read but how it also still has a depth to it. It was a love at first sight in the book but it wasn't bad because it was a short plot so it can't exactly be a slow burn. It was cute and you're probably wondering why I gave it four stars instead of five like usual. It's because for me it was too short lol so I couldn't fall in love with Adam and Dionne's story like I wanted to. But, the story was so fun and simple. I will 100% read it on days that I am looking for something light and fluffy.
Characters
Adam is a tough Irishman who will do anything for the people he loves, including pretending to be gay for his best friend at a class reunion. He immediately falls for Dionne and her sharp features and quick wit. Dionne is a curvy black girl with an infectious attitude who is trying to rebuild her life from the mistakes she has made. She has some lust for Adam and wants to get to know him but doing that will get in the way of her Operation Atonement. I think my favorite thing about these characters is that when they fought Dionne was the one to apologize. I liked that because she was the one to hurt him.
Romance
Soft, sexy, sweet. That is the perfect way to describe Adam and Dionne. They had such soft moments and when they had some heart to heart, I melted. They also had some sexy times that made me weak. And lastly, those sweet nothings had me swooning. They cared about each other and they loved each other. It was fast but my heart beat faster.
Favorite Quotes
Ohh, this one was f****** trouble. And he would have her.
“How far up does it go?" She raised a brow. "Wouldn't you like to know?" "Yeah," he said. "I really f****** would."
"You're something else, sweetheart. I don't understand what you do to me, but I like it. I want to stick around and let you do it again and again."
Leaning down, he whispered his truth into her ear. "If we do this now...you're mine. Tell me you understand."
this was the last book of Talia's i had to devour and it was a quick delightful read! Dionne, the heroine, was divine, i adored her. No surprise there because i love all of Talia's heroines!
I gotta say tho I do wish Dionne was on the cover because this is very much her story and Adam, while I love that dude seriously! was really a part of her journey of atonement.
This book was so engaging. Talia really crafts such multi dimensional characters and her female characters are always so amazing! I would so love to be friends with Dionne and her crew.
Also whew! Dionne and Adam were so steamy together. And one thing we can always be assured of with Talia's heroes is that they are always in awe of the heroines. And they are catching all the feels and i love that!
So now I wait to see what Talia puts out next because whatever it is imma be reading it
This was so, so good. I mean...wow!!! A larger heroine who was into fashion? YES!!! An Irish hero? YES!!! Dionne, the heroine, had an interesting backstory wherein she wanted to fix all the mistakes she'd made pushing people away throughout her life. On one part of this plan, she met Adam, the hero. Man, I loved Adam. Where Dionne was the more skittish one, Adam was all-in in terms of their relationship. Their chemistry was definitely obvious, plus there was quite a lot of steam all throughout the novella. I got this as a freebie for signing up to the author's mailing list, and now I cannot wait to read more of her work.
"Listen," he sighed. "You seem... complex." "Is that a polite way of saying I'm kind of a bitch?"
Not a big fan of the actual romance, it just wasn't that interesting. The hero also wasn't interesting (despite being Irish!) and I was not ok with what the heroine did there at one point (when she was angry at the hero and went to that party). However I do enjoy Hibbert's writing - and her heroines - and the whole "Operation Atonement" thing really resonated with me.
Her books are ending too quickly. I would have liked to see the confrontation with the brother. Anyway this was a good read. I will definitely read something else by Hibbert.
Ok...is it just me??? Am I slow??? What was the big "sin" that she was so ashamed of that she had to atone for???? This made no since to me and left a lot of gaping holes in the story. I won't be reading the 2nd book
I’m writing this review pretty far off from when I finished the book so bear with me. It’s definitely not going to be very in depth and it’s going to be short.
Overview:
Dionne has done some things that she regrets in her past, she’s not apologizing but she wants to atone for her mistakes. When she goes to a high school reunion she catches the eye of former classmate Adam and from there it’s lust at first sight. Throughout more interactions it’s clear to see that Adam is in love with everything Dionne has become in the years since high school, I mean who wouldn’t be in love with a successful business woman? Dionne doesn’t want love to distract her from the task at hand, but she doesn’t want any messy family memories or exes coming back to haunt her and leaving before things can get too real is her specialty. You guessed it though, Operation Atonement took a left turn when Adam came into play so will her mission end up a complete failure? Or success in more ways than one?
My thoughts:
I love Talia Hibbert’s books! I’ve read quite a few of them and I’m slowly making way through the others. I absolutely loved Dionne as a female lead, she was fabulous, independent, wondrously flawed and just a bad bitch all around. Did I mention she used to be a sex worker? And is now an entrepreneur for a photography business that’s 18+! GET YOUR COINS SIS. As far as the male lead Adam I didn’t really care for him, I honestly could not tell you his purpose other than to further Dionne’s storyline. I did love that he was so enamored with Dionne and I love that he was such a strong character but there just wasn’t much depth. I received this book for free through a newsletter and I’m thoroughly happy with it even though it was a short read.
I just finished reading Operation Atonement by Talia Hibbert. It was royally entertaining and I enjoyed her no-holds-barred, in-your-face style of writing, with a liberal dose of, dare I say, mischievousness thrown in. That was the author, for sure.
The main character, Dionne (and I did not recall the author mentioning her last name but found out what it was reading other reviews) is a woman who is full of bravado but at the same time, is possessed by more than her share of insecurities. She and her friends gab about Dionne instituting what she calls Operation Atonement. I know what atonement means but I wasn't sure who she had wronged. I figured out that she wronged one of her best friends, Eli North, back in the day and they basically made amends at a reunion that she attended and where she met up with Eli and his fake date for the evening, Adam McLoughlin.
For one thing, Eli is gay and Adam is not but he agreed to do that favor for his friend because frankly, Eli wanted to shut down his bitchy and mean schoolmates from back in the day.
Add to that the fact that Dionne's mother disowned her seven years ago and you've got a virtual kaleidoscope of issues that she has been grappling with for a long time. There were three phases to Operation Atonement but she didn't get to them all in the order that she wanted--but I'll leave that for you to read about for yourself.
I have to say that the whole sex worker thing I didn't see coming! And I think I would've had to knock brotherman out but that's just me. I would've liked for Dionne's backstory to be examined as well as Adam's but if it was was a novella, it can only be so long.
I enjoyed it, Ms. Hibbert, and I thank you for the free book for signing up for your newsletter. I will definitely be plunking down money and reading more of your books.
I think I'm in love with Adam McLoughlin. This is the third book I've read by Talia Hibbert and I'm more and more impressed every time I read her. Her books have the full range of emotions for me. There are always times that I laugh, and get teary eyed, and breathe a sign of relief as our couple works it out and finds their HEA. I've read some reviews where people have described Hibbert's characters as stereotypical but I didn't get that at all. Dionne is a black woman who loves to have her nails, hair, and makeup done. So what, lots of woman do, and that was in no way the basis of her character. Hibbert created a unique and truly likable heroine in Dionne. I love the idea of someone going back to try to right their previous wrongs to not only mend broken relationships, but to grow as a person. I will admit though that I was waiting for Dionne to have done something much more dramatic to have to atone for, like I was expecting there to have been some bigger reason why she left home in the first place. Aside from that, I loved everything about this book. I love that Adam was so understanding and accepting. I loved that he was so protective and nonjudgmental. I truly enjoyed their journey and the love scenes were great as well.
OPERATION ATONEMENT Is my second book 📖 I’ve read by the beautiful queen TALIA HIBBERT!
Like I said about the first book I read (A Girl Like Her) Also a great book 📖
Both A girl like HER & OPERATION ATONEMENT Needs more books 📚 to add to the story , they both leave me empty and needing/wanting MORE! But hey that’s GOOD RIGHT?
Operation Atonement Has ADAM & DI and I love the fact he’s a sexy strong smoldering IRISH ☘️ man And she a big, beautiful, bold queen of color (Jamaican decent) And he likes, wants and loves her for her, rolls and cellulite and all And she’s automatically attracted to him and not afraid to admit her lust for him that is!😉☺️ I LOVE THE TRANSPARENCY they have from within I love that both characters are relatable vulnerable at parts where I’d be vulnerable too..(RELATABLE) Also the friends in the book the FUNNY ATTRACTIVE ELI, fierce NAT and too smart for his own good Leonard (her son) and silly Corinne... AGAIN RELATABLE I have 3 friends like this one is gay one has a child and the other is always up for the silliness hell we all are 😂😂 Soooo again Miss @taliahibbert BRAVO 👏🏾 another you should continue the story
2.50 Stars. The heroine, Dionne Pryce, is an attractive feisty plus sized Black female, the hero, Adam McLoughlin, is a handsome desirable successful White businessman, the two meet at tenth Sixth Form Class Reunion. Adam is attending the reunion as the date of a gay friend, Eli, who was bullied and the butt of many of his classmates pranks. Dionne is attending as an alumni who happened to have been one of the few people in the Clara who was kind to and friends with Eli. Eli introduces Adam and Dionne and they are instantly attracted to each other; but she thinks he is gay and dating Eli. In short order, he convinces her otherwise and they jump into bed and Eli reminds Dionne that, she had sex with Adam without getting his (Eli’s) confirmation that he and Adam were not in a relationship. The rest of the book is Adam and Dionne playing “hide and seek/ catch, screw, release and repeat” until their marriage and epilogue. Didn’t get their story nor connect to them as a couple.
I really liked Dionne and Adam as characters. Dionne in particular: large (in size and also larger than life tbh), glamorous, and unapologetic (except for the part where she's literally on a mission of atonement so I guess JK, but in other ways...) and just so sexy :) but also Adam and his thirst, and the fact that he's an alpha male without being an asshole. Misunderstandings as per normal in romance get resolved a bit faster than usual, thank the Lord, and the two just pursue each other while Dionne also deals with her own personal problems. Also the fact that the novel starts with Adam playing fake boyfriend to his gay friend is just so cute :) :) On the other hand, though, I feel like I miss the depth of some of Hibbert's longer works. The length constrains how deep the characterization can go--I just feel like I wanted more, especially from Dionne whose past is so rocky. Still, this is one I got for free through her newsletter so I can't complain, and it was a blast.
I really enjoyed reading this novel, it captivated me from the start. Brilliantly detailed, with memorable characters I fell in love with, were so real and honest with there emotions and more than anything it feel real. Great dynamics, and realistic writing style.
Well developed and written, a beautiful love story with a great balance of love, humour and hotness.
I have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this book. A MUST read. Thank you TH 😀
I enjoyed this romance because Dionne felt more real than the usual heroines in romance novels. She was independent without being rich beyond belief. She wasn’t a size 2 or pushing the barriers of obesity. She was modern with curves most black women have and are very proud of. I loved her, and I lived Adam for her. Dionne struggle was real. So many women will be able to relate to the same mistakes as Dionne and the need to right those wrongs. I am a fan of Talia!!!
I love Hibbert's romances so much and this was another strong couple.
My one quibble is...I'm sort of perplexed as to why Dionne's scope of Operation Atonement went so far. I get her ex (she did hurt him but spoiler: and maybe her mom should have been included but the friends she lost touch with after school? That doesn't make you a horrible person - it just makes you human. I honestly don't know many people who have stayed in touch or at least kind of lose touch then touch base on and off over the years.
I got this ebook for free for signing up to Talia's newsletter so my expectations were low to middling.
Man, this book is steamy! I really liked the characters and even though their romance fits into the "love at first sight" trope, the challenges they work through together feel very modern and honest. The steamy bits have light D/S dynamic energy and felt a smidge predictable -- a strong black woman wants to be bossed around? of course! -- but is a fun, vanilla interpretation of kinky sex. I will be reading more of Talia's books. I'm a sucker for Irish heartthrobs, after all ;)
This book was my first read by this author and I enjoyed it. Dionne and Adam were an interesting couple. Dionne felt that she needed to atone for some of her past actions. She was bisusy, crafty and jealous at times, but wanted to make things right. Adam was domineering, but caring. They were fire together. Great job Ms Hibbert. I will definitely read more of your books.
At this point I have read all of Ms. Hibbert’s books and ice decided that we are best friends. Granted we don’t know each other but it’s fine! Her female characters are fun and funny. They never come off as “typical” or generic. I always feel like I could be friends with them in real life. I loved that Dionne wanted to get forgiveness from people in her part. Adam was a doll, I legit loved him. I can’t wait to read the next book from Ms. Hibbert , I’m pretty sure I’ll love that too.
