In Turing Test Girlfriend (#5 in the Society Agent series), undercover agent Shane O’Ryan allows himself to be imprisoned by the leader of the amber-eyed gang, a mysterious organization that has twice tried to kill him. Shane needs to uncover the gang’s origins and its home planet. His partner is Ainsley, a shape-shifting android created for undercover work.

Legally she is just property, even though she is a sentient being who can rationalize, moralize and experience pleasure. Ainsley’s attraction to Shane snaps her out of her lonely, one-of-a-kind isolation. Her growing emotional spectrum defies her programming. She begins forming an emotional bond. Shane concludes that Ainsley is a species of one, a person entitled to the same Charter rights as any intelligent entity. He must first escape the clutches of the gang, and then somehow convince the four leaders of the Confederation to emancipate Ainsley.

I maintain two history blogs: one on the Patriot War (www.raidersandrebels.com); and, one on William Johnston, the Thousand Islands legend (www.piratebilljohnston.com). Soon this legend will be available in book form.

I have completed a biography of "Pirate" Bill Johnston and have signed a publishing agreement with the Beacon Publishing Group. The release date is pending.

In 2012, I published two books:
- the "Patriot War Along the New York-Canada Border" (a history book)
- and "Counter Currents" (a historical novel). It received the 2013 silver medal for Historical Literature Fiction from Global Ebook Awards.

Both tell the story of the Patriot War along the St. Lawrence River in 1838.

In 2013, I published a second history book, the "Patriot War Along the Michigan Canada Border." It was a finalist in the 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the historical non-fiction category.

In December 2014, I published a sequel to Counter Currents, Dark Southern Sun.

I have begun writing a new novel, my first contemporary fiction work.

I wrote and published a series of sci-fi novelettes. I have unpublished them. I was not happy with the writing. I plan to rework the series into a single novel someday.

A researcher, journalist and technical writer for over thirty years, with a master’s degree in journalism, I live on a hobby farm in Eastern Ontario.

I suggested in my review of the other books in this series that there was a danger, because of the restricted scope of the conflicts, of the stories becoming too similar. So go ahead, Mr. McLaughlin, and prove me wrong. I can take it.
And he has. This book is definitely a step up in several areas. The danger is more acute. The theme (citizenship for the not-quite-human) will soon become topical. The science is more advanced. And the main character has matured as well. The emotional involvement is deeper. Conflict exists at more levels.
There is a thoughtful and satisfying ending, leaving the promise of further adventures, perhaps with two heroes now.
Highly recommended to Space Opera, Sci-Fi, and Light Romance fans for a light, quick read (35 pages).

This is book #5 in the Society Agent series, and I think it is my favorite so far. Agent Shane O'Ryan has had his share of difficulties with relationships in the past. This time, though, he's met someone special. She may even be "the one". The only problem is she is an android. She is not human...or is she? They work together to figure out a way to make their relationship work.

In the midst of falling in love, agent Shane O'Ryan and Ainsley fight their way out of a dangerous mission solidifying their feelings for each other.

This story is fast moving and action packed while dealing with the emotions of falling in love for the first time. Shane O'Ryan is one of my favorite fictional characters. I have gotten a kick out of the humorous aspects of the Society Agent series. While all of the stories deal with interplanetary and interspecies relationships, this story goes a bit deeper.

I hope there are still more to come in this series.
