Michael Jay is the award-winning author of Dog Water Free, a coming-of-age memoir that traces his extraordinary journey from Detroit’s Westside to Harvard and beyond. After losing both parents as a young teen, Michael’s life was reshaped by resilience, faith, and the generosity of an anonymous benefactor who made it possible for him to attend Detroit Catholic Central High School. He later graduated from Harvard College and earned his MBA from Northeastern University, grounding him in the discipline and perspective that would define his career.
Professionally, Michael built more than two decades of leadership experience in resort development, commercial planning, and strategic partnerships. He served as Director of Commercial Development for Intrawest, overseeing the full commercial build-out of the Village at Squaw Valley USA in Lake Tahoe. He then spent seven years with Tamarack Resort as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and later Senior Vice President, helping guide one of Idaho’s most ambitious destination-community projects. Since 2013, he has been Lead Consultant for SALSR LLC, advising clients on resort operations, strategic alliances, and complex multi-stakeholder development.
Dog Water Free—a 2019 NYC Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite and IndieBRAG Medallion honoree—honors the extraordinary strength of his mother and the improbable journey that shaped him. Michael currently lives in Idaho.
