Surrender the Sun #3

Point of No Return

Rate this book
From the bestselling author of the Graham's Resolution series comes book three in the Surrender the Sun series.

In an impossible situation, our story of a mini ice age starts with hopefulness spaning to heartbreak. How will Bishop and the others survive impossible odds as they seek to bring those they love to shelter. And is the Osprey, and all those on board, truly gone forever? How will Jax and the others make their way on such a perilous journey? The brutality of survival in this post-apocalyptic world leaves little hope for humanity after the Maunder Minimum. Perhaps they're lost after all.

So-So

Premise was good, science believable. Characters were ok. But I don't know why writers insist on making the lead female character annoying and clingy.
But...
When I progressed to book 2, I actually thought there was a mistake. Book one ends with Marge grieving for her dead husband and Bishop keeping his promise to him to protect Roger's family. Book two begins with Marge in bed with Bishop. Huh? When did that happen? When did they wind up at the resort? What happened to the gang burning people's homes, and what happened to Roman? Or Ramsey?
I felt like I skipped an entire book between 1&2, with little enough of flashback to explain the current situation. What was in the cases that Gellar returned for, and even that wasn't believable. Someone who has his own army would just send someone to get the whatever it was that he wanted, including the illegitimate son.
And if Walt had personal connections with the men in the bunker why didn't he try getting them to lay down their arms for a better leader?
So, for more this was a series of missed opportunities to be a really outstanding storyline. I wouldn't recommend it.

*****RELEASES NOVEMBER 14, 2017*****

Mark Bishop has options to weigh and life and death struggles to deal with. Part way through their move from Idaho to Colorado the Osprey went down in blizzard conditions. Those with loved ones on that bird are pleading with him to mount a search and rescue. But, where would they even begin to look? They have no coordinates, the weather continues to deteriorate, and life in the silo is far from stable.

Back in Idaho Jax knows that staying there will be the death of all who remain. He is willing to lead anyone who dares to go on a suicide journey at best in the direction of Colorado in hopes of making it to the silo. Knowing the Osprey has gone down they have no other option if they hope to survive.

There are so many questions surrounding the loss of the Osprey. Did it crash and kill all aboard? If there were survivors, how long will they make it before succumbing to the elements?

Shaw’s third novel in The Surrender the Sun series, Point of No Return: A Post Apocalyptic Dystopian Thriller, showcases the worst possible scenario for those caught in the new world of the Maunder Minimum. Mother nature pities no one. If it can happen, it will and it won’t be pleasant.

The world building in this series is so well done that I was cold! The covers make me shudder. The way this novel ended was clear that Shaw means to finish here. But, I can easily imagine ways to continue the series if her fans ask it of her.

I loved the way that she made Jax appear to be a hard-hearted bastard when he really has a heart of gold. I think I like him even more so than Bishop. His backstory is bound to be fascinating. (hint, hint)

On a side note – Jet!

If you enjoyed the first two books in this series, you won’t be disappointed with this one at all.

5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Excellent but left wanting more

Left wanting more . . . This book was excellent as were the other 7 I have read by this author. Great Characters, intense struggles to survive, twists & turns to the story line and more. Sadly I was left very disappointed in the end. I would have enjoyed learning about the time between 2030 & 2042 - even in 5 year chunks. The relationships that developed, the struggles that would no doubt have occurred as the people settled in to their day to day lives. Knowing more about Walt’s recovery, the growth of Rebecca as a leader, in fact the growth of all the children we have come to know would have been very interesting to readers. I felt as though I was galloping along with all of them and suddenly was stopped . . . there was nothing. An empty 12 years. I only hope the author will create a book 4 to fill us in on those years and a book 5 to lead us back to life above ground. I am sure there would be more struggles to write about in that transition too.

Walt, Bishop, Jax, Bishop, Jax, Walt.......

This is the third and final installment of the Surrender The Sun trilogy. I’ve enjoyed the trilogy as an action, dystopian story. I think the writing has improved since the first installment although I still think another editing pass would make it a better read.

This is a very quick read with most chapters just being a few pages and most ending with a cliffhanger. The story jumps from character to character giving it a disjointed feeling without much development. It’s just one crisis to another. That’s the strength of the book, the action and the fast pacing. The weakness is lack of real character development and lack of social structure within the world building. It’s mostly alpha males with a few woman on the sidelines.
There’s no time for subtleties when every moment is filled with peril and every second could be your last.
At the end there’s a good set up for a continuation of the story but I think Shaw has told her story and it was about collapse and survival, not about rebuilding.

Good series…..but

I enjoyed it. I took a couple of stars away because of the short, abrupt ending. It seems I’ve read several series lately, from different authors, that put so much detail in the other books and beginning of the end book only to have the last chapters just end. Is there a word count they just can’t go over or something? I hate the last chapter being so few pages, especially with the time jump. We spend our time invested in reading about these characters and have so little closure is very disappointing.

Great book to complete this 3 book dystopian series. Did not disappoint! I liked how each chapter was told from the viewpoint of a different character because it kept the story moving since the main characters were all in different locations at the same time. It helped to build up the climax to the ending and felt like a movie as it jumped from scene to scene. I listened to this on Audible and the narrator did all 3 books and was excellent.

I enjoyed the fact that each chapter was told from a different point of view since you had groups in different places. It was nice to see a “happy ending” (is that a thing in a dystopian novel?). The very end was a bit of a disappointment. Everyone finally starts to make their way back together. Battle. Then zap! Jump ahead a decade. All in all it wrapped up a series I have devoured in two days.

Excellent Series

Each book is so well written and grips you with all the action. I was hooked with the first book, bought the next two and finished them in two plus days. Well developed main characters, very descriptive, informative too. One keeps rooting for the good guys. One keeps moving from anticipation to fear, to desolation, sadness, hope, worry, etc. An emotional read. Excellent way to spend a few days of the pandemic!

An excellent trilogy

Once I read the first book, I was hooked and had to immediately follow on with the remaining two. A constantly developing story line with a range of characters who grow in statue and likability. A wonderful tale which offers an alternative view of the future which should come with a health warning ... if read when there is cold outside and snow on the ground, wear your thermals as you'll feel the cold creeping in!

Never had a bad thing to say about Anette's books - other than they are too short, over too quick and I have to wait for the next one to be written!

Continuing this series the mini ice age is forcing out group of survibors to move onto more sheltered accomodation that can sustain them indefinitely. Seperated into 3 groups they need to suvive, plane crashes, avalanches, wolves, bears and unfortunately each other.

Not a single dull page as their individaul plights unfold.

Ending

The series was very good, however, the ending was a bit of a let down. You have a nattle then jump to the future at the silo have one conversation, discover plant life and end the story!! What became of the characters? I would have liked to know what became of the people, the children that lost parents lile Rebecca and Walt, and Bishop and Maeve.

What a disappointment!!! I felt like the author lost all sence of the story from the first two books. Also did not like the fact that each very brief chapter focused on only one character, and in no apparent order, rhyme or reason. The book rambled and lacked cohesion. Had to force myself to finish over a 2 day period.

Pretty brutal

We all expect dystopian novels to be tough on their protaginests, but this book is a hard slog, especially for readers with small children in their lives. In that respect, the book is probably more realistic than most, but be warned: children die and suffer in this book.

Disappointing

I was looking forward to the resolution of this story yet it feels unfinished. I have many unanswered questions. What happened to the rest of Gellers family, who killed the people who would not follow Gellers orders, why would the people with guns let Geller be so cruel and many more?

I thought the entire series was very good. However, the ending Point Off No Return left a lot to be desired. I think the author was setting up for a new series but why not continue with Surrender the Sun. I would like to have a continuation of the original characters lies going forward.

Probably a 3.5

I didn’t really care as much about Bishop as I did Jax. Jax was the more paranoid of the two and the one most likely to ask first and question later. Jax was the one who planned on going on the plane when. Jax made a lot of the really hard decisions. Jax was blamed for taking matters into his own hands. I wanted to hear a little more about Jax at the end.

You will feel the cold. I am on to book 4.
Amazing story that is so real it will make you shiver. AR Shaw has done it again, taken a world we know and cast us into a possible future that is both scary and so realistic. While this is a work of fiction, I might just be adding a few items to my stockpile of supplies. This is no far out science fiction, but something that feels a little to real.

The series

I just finished the last of this series, and loved every book. The situations were plausible and scary. The characters were well developed; I especially liked Ben and Rebecca. I look forward to following this author into her next adventure.

Great conclusion to a fantastic series

This book concludes a trilogy about a group of people trying to survive a new ice age. Well written, nicely packed with action it was the perfect conclusion to the first two books.

Good story Terrible writing

Interesting story but the writing is poor with awkward sentence and paragraph construction, incorrect grammar, ridiculous analogies, and even made up words. Clearly this writer needs to learn the mechanics of writing and employ a good editor.

Oh man

This entire series had my heart racing. I am a mother of three boys under 5 and got rather emotional and very stressed throughout every one of these books. I wish there was a fourth one!! I am attached to the characters and will miss reading about them.

Disappointed

I have enjoyed this series greatly. However it ended so abruptly. It needed more after the group arrived. What happened to Walt? How is Louna? Did Jet make to the silo? What about Mary's parents? Too many questions!

A really good story

The only thing that detracts from the book is the cost of it, if it wasn't such a good read and I needed to know what happens I would never pay so much, Shame as I won't read any others written by Shaw as I can't afford to pay so much.

My Review

This was a hard story to read. The pandemic world had fallen apart. In the new ice age the survivors need to make a good start in new world that was startling thaw. Yet their was still hope as crocus were blooming.

All 3 books in series kept me wanting to read and not put them down.

I had to just keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. Many great and varied characters. Always something new happening and changing the expected direction of the story.

A frozen world

I really enjoyed this series. It’s hard to imagine the surface of our planet being that cold. I appreciate the characters and can imagine how people would revert back to their primal instincts.

Life is delicate. Survival takes everything they had. An epic 3 book series.

This weather condition brought the world to its knees. Mankind had to die or find a way to live. Survival skills were mandatory. Read to see how these survivors managed.

This book and series definitely brings to the forefront in your mind that things need to change, and change soon with every country on the planet. If not we are all in for a world of hurt !
