When Emily visits a nursing home on behalf of her employer, she doesn’t expect her life to change forever, but it does. She has a small accident when she arrives, leading her to new friendships, reconciliation, and the answers to questions she hasn’t even asked. Her moment of carelessness becomes a gift from the other side.
Loosely based on the true story of two sisters who let time slip away from them, this touching tale shows how unspoken emotions can push away those closest to us—and how important it is to reconnect before it’s too late.
Victoria was born and raised in south London and now lives in California. Victoria left school and qualified as a dental nurse, she worked in Harley Street London before moving into the world of real estate. During this time she qualified as a mortgage broker and eventually opened her own real estate agency which she sold in 2012 and published her first novel 'Gut Feeling.'
With a great deal of determination due to dyslexia Victoria progressed to where she is today, living in Santa Monica, with her Husband and dod Tango. Victoria enjoys reading Sophie kinsella, Cecelia Ahern, Danielle Steel, Sebastian Faulks, J K Rowling / Robert Galbraith, to name a few.
What I loved most about this read was...EVERYTHING. This was a completely different work from Browne's light-hearted chic lit books, but like her other books, there are lessons to be taken from this: Everyone can relate to Emily's story, and everyone can attest to the importance of family and mending broken relationships before it is too late and time "slips" by. The supernatural/paranormal spin on this story was amazingly well-done, and I once I started this story, I just couldn't put it down.

My Reviews:-
At first I would like to thank the authoress, Ms. Victoria Browne who is my one of good friends whom I have ever met through social media, for providing me an opportunity to read her book and share a review on it.
The title of this book is outstanding. One cannot understand easily what is going to be happened inside the book after reading the title. But when you read the story you can get the idea of why the title has been kept “Slip”. I appreciate the thought behind the creation of this title.
On the other hand, the cover is really heart touchable. One can fall in love with this cover of this book. It was amazing. What an idea! In the cover, there is focused a girl’s face that is captured in a door where is written 111 at the top of it. Reader can get an idea after analysing the cover that this door of this particular number might create an important role in that lady’s life.
What a story it is! I have no words to describe it. It is an outstanding work by this authoress. The story has been penned down very carefully so that readers can enjoy while reading it. It is suspense horror story. a kind of thrilling is also there. The main protagonist, Emily slips while rushing through a door and mops the floor and from there the story starts. A room in an nursing home is centered in this story. The number of that room is 111 and an old woman would stay there in the room. If you want to know the old woman is dead or alive you must have to read the story. After slipping Emily is kept in that hospital, during that time period there has been happened many impossible things. If you want to know are those unnatural incidents nothing but dreams of Emily or anything else you have to read this book. All characters are characterized well here. Moreover, the story has been narrated well. This story leaves a message for the society. If you want to know what the message is you have to read this story.
I haven’t read many short stories, but I liked this one! I was so confused at first, but I think that made me relate to Emily better & really feel what she was going through. I was dying to know what was really going on. Ghosts? Visions? Or was it all a Dream? Great little read! It really puts family & relationships in perspective.
The beginning was interesting, but drew me right in. Well the whole story itself is interesting and I'm glad I read it.
Don't let the moral of this story do to you what so many people out there have. Don't let family and friendships "Slip" away to nothing. It doesn't matter who is "right" or "wrong" don't let stubbornness create a future that can Slip away.
Thank you Victoria Browne for allowing the opportunity to read this.
Well-written page turner - Five stars! I really enjoyed this short story from Victoria Browne and would love to read and learn more about Emily and the other characters. Would definitely recommend!
This is a short story and involves a woman called Emily who visits a nursing home, but when she gets there, can’t remember the reason she is there. She is supposed to be meeting the care home manager to see about a cleaning contract, but al she can think of is the name of someone she should be meeting. As she passes near the reception area of the home, she slip son the floor and ends up being taken to hospital. An old lady who sees her at the home tells her that she ‘slipped’. But in this case – that has a different meaning.
Emily, who is distant from her own sister, suddenly sees her after apparently having listed her as her emergency contact. They still don’t get over what happened at the funeral of their mother, but will have to take a chance to change this. If one of them doesn’t take a step towards forgiveness, then they may never reconnect. The visits to the home, bring Emily to search for another woman, with a twist. She talks to this woman, but you find out quite a surprise at the end of the book, about this.
She sees things that she can’t remember if they are real or not, her fall and bang to her head, having left her with a mild concussion. Who these people are that she sees and whether they are real or not, adds to the story. The final part of the storyline is very touching and reminds you to never leave things too long. The old adage of not going to bed angry, should be applied to all family or friend relationships. A good story, told in a somewhat strange manner, but with a deeper meaning. Much easier to read than the full length book, Now and Then, by the same author. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I’ll start this review with the anticipation for a peaceful and magical new year. I don’t often enjoy short stories because I usually feel like the limitation of words results in lack of richness in the text, it’s harder to relate with characters and the plot is never made to grow and to reach a sound conclusion. However, this particular short story contradicts all my biased notions about short stories. I will try not to reveal too much of the plot. The story begins with a psychic/déjà vu/supernatural element to it which can feel a little confusing. However, in no time, Emily (the central character) makes you become a part of her journey to understanding the importance of family and relationships. It is a story of two sisters who have grown distant, a story of how little disagreements if not treated as little could sever sisterly ties. A little slip along the way makes Emily turn back and review her life choices making her learn the value of forgiveness, acceptance and making peace with loved ones. I believe everyone can relate to Emily's story; there is always someone (be it a friend, a sibling, a relative etc) we have cut off from our lives and we rarely realize how deep the regret of that act could be. The story reminds us of the ticking clock and of the precious memories that could have been made had we realized the swiftness of the passing time. As the New Year arrives I feel like the message of Emily’s story becomes even more worthy of sharing. It will not be longbefore the New Year becomes an old one, mend broken relationships, seek reconciliations with family and siblings over past misunderstandings, cherish your loved ones before time ‘slips’ by.
The story deals with the reconciliation between two estranged sisters. The narrative is so brilliant that it presents a relatively familiar subject in an enchanting way. The chief protagonist Emily visits a home for the old seeking a cleaning contract for her company. There she 'slips' and gets knocked out for a while. What follows is a compelling narrative consisting of a warped reality where the author blurs the boundaries between the preternatural, hallucinations and the real to bring forth the complexities of relationships and reconciliation that will surely resonate with the readers.
A haunting little story told by a highly unreliable narrators that slips between dreams, timelines, and people to tell a story the binds generations. This one plays with the edge of magical realism and the paranormal - what is real? What is a vision? in the end, if the lesson is learned, does it even matter?
For a suspenseful tale, this leans more towards sweet and wholesome than horror and macabre. It is quite disorientating at first and took me a couple reads to sort out what was happening. Thankfully it is a short and enjoyable read. First time through was like what did I just read? and the second was an appreciative, wow, that was quite clever now that I know to look for it.
At first, I found this book to be confusing and Wasn’t sure what was going on. As I continued to read the cloud lifted as I started to understand, a bit like Emily did in the story! This is a story that reminds the reader to take the initiative and reach out to family, that no matter what you argued over it can be fixed. It’s a quick read but it’s full of reality and encouragement to be brave and do what is needed so you don’t miss the opportunity. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a new author for me which I enjoyed and look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is a story that pulled me in from the beginning. It is a well written story that brings paranormal to a new level. The characters are connectable and made the story for me. They are strong characters that had great growth throughout the story. This is an emotional story about two sisters who struggle to reconnect with their unspoken emotions. I really enjoyed this story and it is worth the pick up. I highly recommend this book.
I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.
A very sweet story about reconciliation and relationships. This book is difficult to review without giving too much away, but I really enjoyed the story. I was very confused at first about what was going on, but it was soon more clear what had happened. If you enjoy stories with a slight paranormal twist you will enjoy this novella.
I liked this short story, alittle different then my normal read but in a sense the same. I would recommend this little Gem to anyone, this book is a little reminder to say what we need to say to the people we love and not wait til it maybe to late. A copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
Although this short story was a little confusing right at the beginning, soon all becomes clear and the moral of the story is not to hold a grudge or stray from family and friends as time slips away and before you know it everything has changed. A good read if you're only looking for something to take up half an hour of your time.
This was a quick short story read. So why did it take me two weeks to read? It didn’t draw me in, I found the start quite confusing, I didn’t find Emily relatable, and I was distracted by typos in the copy I read.
It definitely wasn’t bad, it was an interesting premise, and I almost think it would have lent itself better to a full novel. At the end I found myself saying “and?”. I felt like I was craving more information.
I would try another read by this author because the writing wasn’t bad, I just think it wasn’t executed the best.
Nice little story about family and stubbornness and putting grouches away before it's too late. A bit confusing at the beginning but this leads to suspense. I would have loved it, if the faith of the current owner of room 111 would have been solved too.
A bit confusing at first, but since it is a paranormal genre, I went with it. I like Victoria's writing style. The plot line worked well, and I appreciated how she incorporated the title "Slip" into the actual text of the story. Sweet and Poignant. Highly recommend.
This is a lovely read about friendship, family, and regrets. I really enjoyed it and it has those "make you think" moments that everyone craves in a book.
Lovely story, and i thank Hidden Gems ARC program for the chance to read it. The story is involved; and, for me, a bit difficult to follow, but the concept is important.
Difficult, disorientating, confusing when you first start reading this book. I was warned by the blurb that it had hints of "Sliding doors" so I was prepared, but still found it a bit unclear. The good bit it that it is a short story and therefore you can re-read from the start once you have finished the book. It is then that I appreciated how sweet and poignant this story is and how cleverly well written, with all the little clues in place from the very beginning. I did enjoy this book very much.
