The best kind of mystery is the one that, when all the pieces fall together, you think to yourself, "Of course, how did I miss this?" While I've read a lot of cozy mysteries, I feel a lot of authors get sloppy and just throw in a twist at the end without inserting clues throughout. This isn't one of those books.

The plot it masterdly done (this coming from someone who has read tons of cozy mysteries). The conflict built well, and the red herrings made it impossible for me to figure out who the culprit was until the end.

The only reason I gave this four star instead of five is that there were several scenes where the characers made a 180 change without much motivation, almost just contrived to go along with the plot. But the mystery itself is brilliant!

My first ever cozy and i enjoyed it as an introduction to the series, i could picture the little village and characters in it, cant wait to meet a few more.......

The reason for the 3 star was nearly every character introduced was accused at one point or another, i found it a little silly, i get having a few different suspects, but everyone was a suspect. Also the main character was a little shallow and unlikable, but i will get to book two at some point as the read was pleasant and easy.

I don't understand all the high reviews for this. Was I reading a different book?? This was just barely a 2* read for me.

The perfect cozy book for fall. The perfect mystery read for fall. Not only was it so quick, it was entertaining and I didn’t want it to stop. It was the great amount of warmth and suspense that didn’t feel overwhelming.

I enjoyed the talk of baking on top of not forgetting there was a murder involved! The author mixed that in well!— no pun intended.

I was in on all the twists and going along with every assumption made. My face was very animated throughout this read, I’ll probably pick up the others in the series!

Following her death, Aunt Rose left her bakery to Rachel Rowan. Emily Frank, who owns the cafe across the street, wants to buy the bakery but, at the last minute, Rachel decides not to sell.

One night, Rachel is awakened by noises coming from the bakery downstairs. When she investigates, she finds Emily Frank in the office, rifling the desk. When she calls the sheriff, he refuses to take the incident seriously.

Aunt Rose did not have a will, so Arthur Rafferty helped Rachel get everything squared away. When Arthur is killed in Rachel's bakery while she is on the phone, Sheriff Tanner immediately suspects her of being the killer and a torn up love letter makes things look even worse.

Was Arthur having an affair? Is that why he was killed? Who is trying to frame Rachel? Can Rachel convince Sheriff Tanner of her innocence and find the real killer?

There are so many twists, turns. and red herrings in this book that you could easily suspect just about everybody in town. Nancy McGovern has a writing style that makes it nearly impossible to put any her books down before you have finished it. Then you want to immediately reach for the next one in the series.

Murder & Marble Cake is a cosy mystery novella by Nancy McGovern. There are 25 chapters to the book. It is the first book in the Comfort Cakes Cozy Mysteries series. The book begins with Rachel, a woman who has just moved to town, in the hopes of running a café that her late aunt left her in her will. However, when there’s a break in one night, and a murder the next morning, she has to put her plans on hold. She instead does her best to try and figure out what’s going on.

My first thought about the main character, Rachel, is that she’s not a very nice person. When the author is describing characters’ appearances to us, she does it via Rachel looking them over. And we can read Rachel’s thoughts on their looks. She has a lot of nasty things to say about them, pointing out all sorts of things she thinks are flawed about people. And the whole staring at appearances gets old really quickly, in my opinion; she makes a lot of assumptions about people based on their appearances. It’s one of the things that bothers me about her; she spends so much time making assumptions about everyone, about what their lives are like, judging them for the way they look. Stuff like that. And it felt like so many of the characters are ones I did not like.

One of the things I disliked so much about the mystery aspects is that there was so little physical evidence linking anyone. All of the evidence was things that any decent attorney would be able argue is irrelevant, if the case went to court. A couple of the primary pieces of evidence mentioned were a love letter and a ring. Even the main character regularly brings up that the letter could have been written by anyone, left there by anyone. Yet, by the end of the book, she is so convinced that it’s written by one specific person. And the thing about the ring is that it is also something that could have been put there by anyone. Again, at one point, the main character even mentions to that it could have been put there to frame someone. So, just because either of these are found at a crime scene, it doesn’t mean that the person they’re linked to was the killer. If this case were to go to trial (without the confession), I do not think that there is any way that a judge or jury would choose to convict a person based on the evidence. Also, I reckon that the confession would be thrown out of court, too, to be blunt; considering that many courts reject confessions elicited in such a way. And to continue my bluntness, the vast majority of the book, her assumptions and speculation led the way throughout the case. By the end of the book, it still feels unsolved because there’s so much evidence they did have that they didn’t even give a second glance to, and there are so many possible suspects that were not even considered by Rachel. Like the thing with the ring, as well. It’s a football ring, yet she only considered a handful of people to be suspect because of this; she never considered the rest of the football team members that might have had one. So… Yeah… I feel like the author didn’t think through much of this evidence stuff, considering how many valid pieces of evidence were ignored. I felt like the author could have done more research into the forensics of such cases. For example, after either victim are found dead, why not do a gunshot residue test on her? Or a blood splatter test on her/ her clothing? Surely either would be a valid way to tell whether she was around the victims during death, whether she had committed the crime, etc. Yet there was no mention of it. Despite how long and drawn out Rachel’s thoughts were to these love letter and ring pieces of evidence, they were pretty much worthless in “proving” anything.

Overall, this is the type of book that I wanted to enjoy, but it was pretty disappointing for me. With a lot of unlikeable characters, and a poorly thought-out murder investigation, that ended with a confession elicited by speculations, rather than evidence, I did not like the book very much.

Rachel is starting her life over in the small, coastal town of Swaddle, California where her beloved great-aunt owned a bakery. When Rachel inherited the bakery she was all set to make millions from her start up company and had every intention of selling out to cafe owner Emily Frank, but then Rachel's world crumbled like day old cake and now she intends to carry on her aunt's legacy. Before she can open the bakery, her home is broken into in the middle of the night. Rachel catches Emily Frank in the act but the police chief refuses to believe Rachel's claims and insists there must have been another intruder. Incensed by the policeman's dismissal of her fears, Rachel vows to prove Emily's guilt somehow. She vents to her lawyer, Arthur, who is helping Rachel settle her aunt's estate. Then Arthur is cruelly murdered in Rachel's home and she becomes the prime suspect! With her house a crime scene and her bakery plans on hold, Rachel can only bake and think about the events of the past few days. She is determined to get back to normal as soon as possible even if it means solving the murder mystery herself.

This mystery had potential but got bogged down by too many suspects and red herrings. I did kind of suspect the murderer but I never really guessed it was that person. I was thinking the same thing Rachel was. I quickly solved the secondary mystery of the marble cake. I especially enjoyed the flashback sequences of Rachel baking with her aunt. It shows how special their relationship was and gives the reader insight into Rachel's character.

I like Rachel and can relate to having that special relationship with an older relative and having the bonding time over baking. Aunt Rose sounds delightful and I can tell what a great relationship she and Rachel shared in their hearts despite being miles apart and not seeing each other often in later years. Aunt Rose's secret to a moist cake is not something I would have guessed. I'll have to try out the recipe! Aside from Rachel the only character I really took a liking to is Jackson Wyatt, the local hardware store owner who quotes poetry and knows a good person when his puppy sees one. Arthur, Rachel's lawyer, was a nice, fun guy but his girlfriend was pressuring him to propose and he didn't seem to want to so he should have done the right thing and broken up with her. After he is killed, I feel sorry for Audrey but in the beginning she sounds like a spoiled brat. Jay Frank, Emily's husband, is also semi-likable but by the end I decided he was an idiot and not worth liking.

The secondary characters are not all that quirky or fun. They could be murderers. Emily is a complicated character. Like Rachel, she is passionate and proud. I understand her devotion to her family business and her motives but I don't agree with her actions. Sheriff Scott Tanner is also a complicated character but he is really really hard nosed and really really shouldn't be trying to solve any crimes in that small town. Like Rachel I despised how his small town mind works. Just because she's an outsider and he's family doesn't mean Rachel is a lier and a killer. However, he's a little more complicated than that and his character evolves as he gets to know Rachel better. Paul Johnson, a wealthy real estate tycoon, went to school with Arthur and Jay. He is kind of an odd character. I don't know him that well but don't get warm, fuzzy vibes from him or his girlfriend Lacey. I don't like their relationship. Any of them could have killed Arthur or it could have been someone unknown!

I liked this world enough to want to read another one or two to see how Rachel does after her shop opens and if she has more baking tips.

Rachel leaves San Francisco after life throws her curves that is just too much for her to take. She goes back to Swaddle where her Aunt Rose used to live until she passed away leaving her bakery to Rachel. Rachel thinks a small town is just what she needs, but they don't care fro newcomers very much. First the cafe owner Emily Frank breaks into Rachel's house looking for something. Her brother is the sheriff, and he won't arrest her. Then the lawyer who helped her get through all the red tape of owning the bakery is killed in her kitchen while she is on the phone with someone who is threatening to kill her! When the sheriff arrives he doesn't believe her story and wants to arrest her.Can Rachel prove she didn't kill Arthur and that someone is out to get her? Who would want Arthur dead? Or Rachel? Read the book to find out. Very good, with some interesting characters and twists and turns I didn't see coming. I voluntarily read a copy of this book. The review is unbaised and of my own opinion.

she moved to a small town in calif when her aunt died and left her the house and bakery. the cafe across the street wanted to buy the bakery but she decided to keep it and run it herself. she caught the lady from the cafe breaking into her house but the sheriff, who was the cafe ladies brother, wouldn't do anything about it

while her lawyer was in her kitchen she got a threatening phone call in the other room. when she got back to the kitchen the lawyer had been murdered and a love letter ripped up and thrown over him. the sheriff thinks she did it, but the other lawyer in town, who was in the same office as the lawyer that got killed, got her out and moved her into the house with him and his wife for a few days till the crime scene is released. only that lawyers wife is the lady from the cafe who broke into her house

i would read more of this series

A great cozy mystery

Rachel Rowan returns home after the death of her beloved Aunt Rose. After Rachel's fiance' sold her business behind her back, she decided to open her aunt's bakery, rather than selling it to Emily Frank.
Two days before the bakery is to open her friend and lawyer, Arthur, is killed in the bakery. The night before Rachel caught Emily breaking into the study. All clues point to Rachel as the killer.
Nancy McGovern has written a clever book with lots of two and turns making it very difficult to determine the real killer.
A must read for those who like cozy mysteries.

Now this is a cozy mystery heroine with some actual brains and who isn't instantly falling in love with a sheriff who tells her every single detail about an ongoing investigation for no reason at all. Quite on the contrary, Rachel is actually the suspected and arrested for murder and the sheriff isn't holding a protective hand over her meddling; and they definitely aren't getting on brilliantly at first.

The characters were interesting in a human kind of way. They have their faults, all while being likeable in their own way. The murder was intriguing and it took a while for all the puzzle pieces to fall into their respective places.

I enjoyed this one a lot.

This is an awesome cozy mystery!! This is book #1 in the Comfort Cakes series. It drops you right into the story and keeps you glued! Rachel moves to Swaddle, CA to take over her Aunt's bakery after she passes away. She is new in town and doesn't know who to trust. That makes it more interesting and creates a few suspects. A lawyer friend of Rachel's is killed at her house. This has everything I love in a cozy mystery- likeable interesting characters, an intriguing mystery (but not intense or graphic), and friendships with the potential for romance. There are some twists to keep it interesting. Very enjoyable! Can't wait to read the next book!

2.5 for me. It was a do-able read but not something I would recommend to a friend. I am going to keep working through her series to see if things pick up.

The opening started strong but the relationships built in the story shifted abrupt without any depth. It was easy to tell who the killer was immediately and the storyline fully lacked the kinds of things you need in from a cozy mystery like well described and thoughtful surroundings, a supportive helper or a cozy subplot that keeps you extra curious.

This was a quick read when I needed a break from a long novel so I plan to give her next book a try in hopes things improve.

This book was a light read and thoroughly enjoyable. Don't expect a deep mystery such as a James Patterson or Jonathan Kellerman, but the characters are fairly well-developed. Well-written without the annoying and obvious grammar errors I seem to notice. I was surprised because I usually get an idea of the killer before the end, this book provides a surprise. I may actually try the recipe for marble cake which is listed at the end of the book. This is a good book to read on a cold day with a cup of tea and a blanket.

I received the book from Ms. McGovern as a member of her reading team. I have to say it was one of the best cozies I’ve recently read. Every time I thought I had the “killer”, I was proven wrong! I found out who did it only when the author decided to let me in on it! If you enjoy a good cozy (plus some great recipes), this is the book to read. I’m glad this new series is here, and I can’t wait for the next installment! An excellent cozy murder mystery!

This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

He did it! Or, did she do it?

Rachel didn't like being falsely accused by the sheriff in this small town. She tries investigating the murder to clear herself. All Rachel does is make herself look more guilty. Cute story though Rachel goes a bit overboard at times with her accusations. There were a few clues in the story that helped me figure out the murderer. I look forward to trying the marble cake recipe.

Nancy McGovern's writing style is similar to Joanne Fluke, which I love. Nancy's story is full of suspense at every turn. I could not put it down. I was up most of the night to finish book. Had to find out who did it. Can't wait to read the next book. I think I have found another author to read. You must read if you like cozy mysteries.

Good read

I read a lot of cost mysteries and I love the fact that all the authors have their own unique twist. Rachel's back story is different from the normal and the twists and turns of who could, would, and should have been guilty of the murderers all plausible with a final aha moment. Can't wait to read book 2
