The Mercenary

Rate this book
Cameron is the most normal person ever. At least that’s what people think when they first see him. Sure, he’s tall and attractive, and he has an air of nerdy hipster that makes him extra cute to a certain type of gay guy. What most people don’t know about him, though, is that he works for the government in a highly classified position. Ever since he was a young man and he decided to hack the state government’s office, Cameron’s life has always been thoroughly planned for him. That means that he can only date people who are okay with being kept at arm’s length. His last boyfriend wasn’t okay with that, and while Cameron thought that he had found the one, it only became very clear that wasn’t the case when it was far too late. That landed Cameron in the situation he is now: in the middle of nowhere, working for a branch of the government so secretive that most people have never heard of it. For the first time in Cameron’s life, he might truly be putting his life in danger.

Logan Kane, on the other hand, is used to putting his life on the line. He was always the kind of person who had plans, big plans, for his own life. But his high school girlfriend got pregnant and then he couldn’t even join the military. That put Logan in a difficult position until someone approached him and told him that they could make it so that he had the same salary and better benefits than the military ever did.

That was when Logan Kane decided to become a mercenary. He didn’t know that was what he was becoming, but now he’s a professional contractor and the government has tasked him to go to a place called The Farm. That’s where he meets Cameron Yates, the down-to-earth but distrustful tactical agent who seems to want to take their relationship farther. Logan is bisexual, single, and very into him. Soon, Logan must choose whether to do his job or be with the guy who he has grown to care so much about, while Cameron must decide who owns him, really: the government or his own heart.

(4.5 STARS) The story is about lies, betrayal, love and learning to trust again and I really enjoyed reading “The Mercenary” by Max Hudson. Max didn’t skimp on the background about each MC’s so the reader had a solid foundation as to how Cameron Yates became the government’s most skilled computer special who worked behind the scenes for missions and Logan became the spy on the scene in the action.

Cameron’s stint as a computer whiz started in his early teens. It was his dump luck to be caught hacking into government protected documents. But it all worked out well and he really liked his job; it just never left him with any time to have a genuine relationship. The past relationship he did have ended because he couldn’t share anything about his work and his partner had to have more emotionally from him. So he was still hurting from the breakup of three years or so together.

Logan Kane had a whole other set of baggage that came with him. Divorced with three kids is a lot of extra to bring along when you’re a spy for a private company. He had to do as his employer said or his kids could be in danger from the people Logan was sent after. He didn’t have a college degree as Cameron did, but he was excellent at doing his job and he brought home plenty of money for his children.

Both Cameron and Logan were sent to “The Farm” where they both met at the welcoming meeting on their first day there. Once they saw each other Logan was the first to flirt with Cameron, but Cameron was attracted to Logan right off. Later, when Cameron knew Logan like men as well as women, all he could think about was to have sex with the handsome man and was very open about it.

Logan on the other hand kept it quiet that he actually wanted Cameron as a lover and had a stronger reserve to fight his urges. Logan had made it a rule from the beginning there would be no sex between them. Logan was all about keeping his children safe and if he did have sex with Cameron it would be a “love them and leave them” sort of deal.

At “The Farm” everyone was to get to know each other to the point you trusted them with your life. This is because when you leave the farm you’re assigned a partner for an assignment. No one knows what their assignments entail and they gave very little instruction, this forced both people to work together to come up with a plan.

Logan and Cameron had already gotten off to a good start getting to know one another, but when they were ready to board the plane to take them on their mission, Logan told Cameron the truth how he had chosen the whiz kid in the first place. Not a great way to start things Logan. Now the partners had more than just the mission to figure out. You’ll see as you read the book.

It’s a very important, but delicate mission for the two to pull off and Cameron had never been involved in a mission where he was in danger. Despite that the two had fallen for each other deeper than they expected and the need to protect each other was phenomenal in the fight to keep not only themselves safe, but everyone they were there to save.

There’s always one partner that doesn’t make it through as easily as the other and recovery can be long and painful. Plus how in the world could a government computer whiz and a man who’s deeply indebted to his company as a spy could ever have a life together. You’d have to read the book to find out the way I did. And since I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review, the reading should flow nicely now that it’s ready for the public.

This was an excellent book that takes us on a journey that Cameron and Logan have to take since they were sent to the "Farm." Cameron is a computer expert and brilliant with intuitive abilities that keep his field crew alive. Logan is a field agent and never went to college but has instincts that keep him alive. They become partners and by the time it is all said and done they accomplish their assignment, but at a great cost to them both. Both these men have been trapped by their employers at a young age. Logan keeps going in order to make money for his kids and his ex-wife to live on. Cameron got caught at a young age and became a computer hacker for the government. The men fall for each other and will fight to the death for each other. My only complaint is that the author repeated information repeatedly at the beginning that made it slow going in the beginning. However had a wonderful and fulfilling HEA. Excellent job. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

I found this story to be fun. I mean the title sets your mind out on an adventure. I like Cameron and Logan. The author went fully into their backgrounds. He really created their world. I enjoyed this story because he went into the details. I like learning things about the main characters.
I received this as a free ARC.

Great Story

Loved the characters and how they came together to create a lasting bond and love. I was happy ☺ to see Logan able to get out of his mercenary job when he's been told we own you for life. Looking forward to more good books 📚 from this author.

UGH

Too stubborn to DNF but wish I had. It's an entire book full of ADHD inner monologuing and *cough* 'spycraft' ineptitude.

A little too repetitive

This story was okay but it just seem like he kept repeating everything that you learned from an earlier time . It just seemed very dragged out
