Reading a chapter sampler isn’t the same as reading the full book. That being said, these first 6 chapters have already captivated me and I can’t wait to see how the story develops!
I consider it fortunate to be living in a time when there's a wealth of excellent, dark, gorgeous fairy-tales for young adults around. And just when I think there's nothing left to be written on the subject someone comes along with a brand new spin on the topic! Such was the case with Melissa Albert's The Hazel Wood. The story engages you from the word go, and much like the book you're off and running almost immediately.
While most contemporary fairy-tales are about...well...fairies, often playing the part of villains AND heros, such is not the case with Hazel Wood, it would be a spoiler to say more so I shall refrain.
I will say, I hope to see more from Melissa Albert, I think she's got a story or two yet to tell.
I like the protagonist well enough, though most about her seems forced. I can’t escape the feeling however that I’ve been set up, rather crassly manipulated by the author. I started reading with the idea that I would want to read the entire novel when it was available. By the end I changed my mind—won’t be looking to read any more by her.
This sampler certainly made me want to read the real book. However, I'm not sure if this will be an instabuy for me or one I wait to get from the library. I'm usually not a fan of spooky stories, but I am all about fairy tales. This chapter sampler is free for Kindle on Amazon, so for goodness sake try it out!
