The book literally has an explosive beginning in the war-torn Isla Hermosa, where trauma surgeon for the Canadian Armed Forces Dr Reagan Cote is operating on a patient. Her parents are cold creatures who always warned her away from themselves. Sounds odd, well, that's how it is! Her parents always made her feel like a mistake.
Dr Kainan Laskaris (unique name!) is the foremost trauma surgeon in all of Isla Hermosa. He's already disturbed because of the rebellion and more so when he comes to know that Reagan will leave soon. They give in to their attraction and when it's time to leave, minutes after they parted, he's feared dead in an explosion, after his dog tags are found.
The story then starts after a year in Toronto. She is tired after working long hours in the hospital, and on top of that, her infant son is in the paediatric critical care unit. It's just her and Peter, and no one else. He has cardiomyopathy and is in need of a new heart. Overtired and overwrought, she now has to work with a new surgeon. She's needed as well in the hospital, being the only staff member who knows American Sign Language; as the surgeon who's arriving - his voice was damaged in the Hermosan war - would be getting corrective surgery as well. He could talk little, and not for long periods of time.
While there was no one for her, there was no one for him too. And with all the life-threatening situations facing both of them all around, it sometimes seemed a surreal read. This is the first time I'm reading a character who uses sign language. Being the only surviving royal of Hermosa, he decides that he has to make Reagan his queen so that he can protect them (her and their baby); especially when he still has threats to his life. I felt really bad for Kainan. He doesn't have anyone to confide in the seriousness of his situation. He couldn't burden Reagan with the truth of his upcoming surgery, coz she's already stressed about their son.
With having not so good parental figures for themselves, both of them are still figuring it out and fearing whether they could be a good parent to Peter. Then there's all the press attention as word gets out that the present King of Isla Hermosa is hiding it out in Toronto.
She is scared that she needs him when she never needed anyone, while he's scared that he'll again leave her all alone if he didn't survive his surgery. It broke my heart to read about his helplessness.
This book was such an intense read, almost till the last few pages.
P.S. This is my first Amy Ruttan read. And what an intense one at that!

The hero and heroine met while serving in the military as surgeons and had a blooming relationship. She was sent back home and he was sent to the front lines where he was badly wounded but the heroine was told he had been killed. Shortly after she learned his fate she found out she was pregnant.
Now their son has been born with a life-threatening heart condition that only a heart transplant can correct. There is a new patient who is to shadow the h everyday. When she goes to introduce herself to her new patient/doctor she finds that it is the man she had thought was dead, her son's father. He lost his voice and had terrible throat damage because of an IED incident trying to save his brother's life.
Now the big question...did I like it? No, I didn't. The hero has become the King of his nation and has been in hiding so he never contacted her and here his son was dying without ever meeting his father. He could have called. It wasn't like she was going to run to the press.
This new King kept secrets from this woman that he loved. Big secrets. And why you might ask? He lied to protect her to ensure her safety blah blah blah but by doing so she lost all faith in him, no longer any trust left. Disappointing to say the least. It certainly showed why honesty is so important. Both of them whined a lot and had very restricted childhoods...boo hoo, haven't we all. Sprinkled through out the book were thoughts about how poorly he and his mother were treated and how the h parents neither loved her or wanted her. It's not like this was brought up once but many times throughout the book. I took a break today in my yard work and chores and then I had the displeasure to spend a few hours with these people who were about to lose their baby boy. Yes, he got better but...I don't care for reading about ill babies and children. It does not brighten my day or give me a chance to relax.
The story also moved along slowly and could have been easily shortened. It did not hold my attention and the story seemed to be all over the place.

MS Ruttan has written a story that is going to stay with me for a long time to come, this one is so moving and emotional and of course beautiful. She has bought together two people who have not had a lot of love in their lives so find it hard to rely on other people Reagan is a loner and Kainan has so much responsibility and when a baby is bought into the mix, a baby who has health problems makes this a story not to be missed.
Dr Reagan Cote grew up as an only child with parents that she was never close to, she is now a great surgeon in the army and is working in worn torn Isla Hermosa along- side Dr Kainan Laskaris they have formed a friendship a bond and on Reagan’s last night before she ships back home to Toronto Canada they take the friendship one more step, they both know that it will only be one night but what a night and Kainan is killed in battle later that night Regan returns home and finds herself pregnant and alone with a son who is very ill.
Kainan is badly injured in the blast that took his brother’s life he now finds himself King of Hermosa, a King with no voice and there is still a lot of unrest in his country so he is in hiding, but he needs to go to Canada for surgery to hopefully regain his voice and the Doctor who is assigned to help him is none other than the beautiful Reagan the woman he has never forgotten and she is shocked to find he is alive and when he finds out the he has a son, emotions are running high.
Reagan is stunned to realize that firstly Kainan is alive and that he is King she has never forgotten him but now has her very ill son to think of and he must come first but that spark that links them is still so strong and with Kainan setting out to convince Reagan to marry him so as he can protect her and Peter, there are a lot of hurdles to cross, but cross them they do and beautifully so, I cried and I smiled throughout this story MS Ruttan knows how to pull readers in with her dialogue and with characters that come to life on the pages thank you for another fabulous story you never disappoint, I highly recommend this one

Unexpectedly reunited! Thrilled to see each other again after mis-truths are revealed and secrets start unravelling, Regan and Kainan try to forge through the obstacles surrounding them to see whether they can share a future together. The characters are fairly diverse and the plot is interesting. It might have lifted the interest a bit more to have lived more of the backstory as part of the current plot, but overall an enjoyable read.
The night before she shipped back home, trauma surgeon Regan Cote had one night of passion with her fellow surgeon Kainan Laskaris in war-torn Hermosa. She was devastated to hear that her friend and lover was killed right after he left their camp, and when she later discovered she was pregnant, she cherished the thought of having a piece of him live on.
Believed dead Kainan was actually only injured, but was left unable to speak/communicate properly. Imagine both of their surprises when they wind up working at the same hospital again. When Kainan, now secretly the King of Hermosa learns of their son, he immediately wants to make her his Queen, but she's not so easily convinced that they fit into each other's worlds!

THE SURGEON KING’S SECRET BABY by author Amy Ruttan is a January 2018 release by Harlequin Medical Romance series.
Reagan Cote had a baby. A baby who was very sick. And she believed the baby’s father to be dead. Imagine her surprise when she faces Surgeon Kainan Laskaris again only to find out he couldn’t speak. Because Kainan was the man she had a brief affair with. And he was her child’s dad.
What would Kainan do now when he finds out about his child? And what would Reagan do when she finds out the huge secret Kainan was hiding from her?
THE SURGEON KING’S SECRET BABY is a sweet romance amid all the medical drama and chaos. It was an amazing adventure to be a part of the magic in author Amy Ruttan’s THE SURGEON KING’S SECRET BABY even for a little while. It has got it all...action, medical drama, humor and heart-melting warmth.
Highly recommended for all readers of romance.

Anyone a fan of Dukes of Hazzard where Roscoe P Coltrane is all happy and gleeful? This is how The Surgeon King's Secret Baby by Amy Ruttan made me feel. A December 2017 Harlequin Medical release the "secret" baby isn't secret in the usual sense and when Reagan and Kainan (LOVE the names) come back together it's just brilliant.
A wonderful, wonderful tale of lost love, surprise, and new love, adventure, emoooootions and excitement. The emotion is so, so on point and the captivating plot mixed with a heroine who wasn't just some wallflower and Kainan who was not only a brilliant surgeon but a King as well #heartmelt. This is definitely one of those books that you wish, if you had any talent at all, you could write.
Amy Ruttan writes original stories with characters who are unique and plots which are a modern twist of the usual. I love them!

"The Surgeon King's Secret Baby" by Amy Ruttan is a medical romance but also just a good romantic read. Reagan and Kainan work and are saving lives in a war zone. They find themsleves drawn to each other but Reagan’s tour of duty ends and she comes home. She then finds out that Kainan was killed and that she is pregnant. About a year later she takes her sick baby and finds a job and Kainan alive. Kainan Laskaris’s voice is damaged, and discovers he’s the father of their sick little boy.
