Wicked as a Christmas Fruitcake by Lotta Smith is a fun addition to this series.

Mandy and Jackie are back again investigating a new murder as USCAB is negotiating a deal for security services for a big client. The client inserted herself into the investigation which only added to the fun. Jackie was over the top, as usual, and I loved every minute of her being on the page. The murder victim was "almost" an endearing slime ball. Quickly paced, lots of humor and a climatic reveal made this a great afternoon read. I'm always ready for another adventure with Mandy and Jackie.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

“Wicked as a Christmas Fruitcake” earns 5/5 Tasty Nutty Nutcracker’s Christmas Delights…sans the murder!

Wedding bliss, newlywed delights, a first Christmas, and…murder! Ok, now things are normal for Mandy and Rick. Once again Lotta Smith has penned a very entertaining holiday story which starts off in the middle a festive gathering of the Manhattan Avenue Arts and Heritage Association at the Charmed and Sprinkled. Harriett Palmetto manages this mom-and-pop bakery that’s been owned by generations of her family, and she is eager to have this event a success. Harriett refuses to be the one who causes the bakery to close after decades in business, and with her original fruitcake recipe becoming a huge hit, she was relieved to think the bakery would survive through another generation. But, wait for it…here it comes ‘cozy murder’ fans! The members of the MAAHA society may have put aside their conflicts to enjoy a bit of Yuletide cheer and delicious fruitcake, but it is also the perfect opportunity for murder. And the means? Fruitcake! Motive? Too many to list, but Mandy and Rick set off to uncover the truth with assistance from some delightfully fun characters.

Enchanting! Although in my youth I ate raw cookie dough and never turned dark purple and exploded, I was very entertained by Lotta Smith’s well written, clever story and wonderful characters. Fans, like me, and newbies, too, will be immediately invested in the story and unable to put it down. There is enough background and character connections revealed to get everyone up to speed, and the idea of ghosts, paranormal mischief, and a government agency that deals with that is not juvenile hocus-pocus from which to shy away. It really works well! And the characters offer realism, sprinkled with quirkiness and laughs galore, including one of my favorite characters: drag queen Jackie, the ghostliest sidekick. And it’s just what I asked Santa for…delicious fruitcake, lots of friends, and…a clever murder to solve!

Totally quirky and I loved it!

The case was hilarious! Well, not the death itself, obviously, but after that. It’s no secret that I loooooove Jackie. She’s so much fun! Of course, I like Mandy as well; without her we wouldn’t be able to ‘hear’ Jackie :)

I loved the quirkiness of the book. Actually, I loved every second of it! This series just keeps getting better and better. This installment is definitely my absolute favorite! If you like quirky ghost mysteries, then this book comes highly recommended!

You just have to love a character that has a best friend who just happens to be the ghost of a drag queen. Such a fun book full of quirky characters. Very entertaining.

Wicked as a Christmas Fruitcake, Paranormal in Manhattan, Book #10
by Lotta Smith.

I have the first book in this series, one that the author gives away free on her website, then books 4, 10 and 17 (all Christmas-themed) and books 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 in this series. I'll read the first in the series, then, since I know what happened between it and book 4, I'll skip 2 and 3, read the free one, which I'm not sure where it comes in the series, and since I've read 10, now, I'll go ahead and read 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16, but not before reading the last Christmas-themed one I have, #17. LOL -- talk about time traveling!

So, in this episode, Mandy is back with her ghost bff, Jackie, and her now husband, Rick Rowling. Added to the fun are Harriett and Meg from the Charmed and Sprinkled bakery, Madame Roloff, and the victim in this novel, the ghost of Woody Napoleon. Can Mandy and her crew catch the killer before they become victims themselves?

There isn't much to not like about this novel. Good editing and proofing, good pacing and plotting, nice, consistent characters, a good mystery, lots of humor, twists and plot turns, some real danger, and no cliffhanger ending. If I had a complaint, it would be that Smith can't seem to let go of telling the reader several times throughout the book that Jackie is the ghost of a drag queen. I get it, Lotta, you don't have to keep telling me every time you mention her name.

So, I'm on to the last of my Christmas themed reading for 2018, in #17 in this series, "I'm Dreaming of a Wicked Christmas."

What it’s about…

Charmed and Sprinkled’s business has dropped off very badly since Woody Napolean died there while eating their Nutty Nutcracker’s Christmas Delight fruitcake. This season’s special.

Can Mandy and Rick solve this one before the family shop has to close its doors for lack of custom? Woody’s hanging around to find out who dunnit!

Technical Tidbits…

The cover is as usual, and especially yummy looking, in that great stylized graphic design.

The storyline is a tried and true who dunnit.

The characters are some old and some new. The new characters come in and get enough for us to feel comfortable around them so we can help figure out the dastardly deed. Though we don’t, or I didn’t. I never do.

The pace is quite steady in this one. Rick is busy with other issues so Mandy and Jackie are on this one. They get lots of “help” from Woody and other characters. They keep on it right up until they solve it.

The tension is pretty good right up until the end when they solve it and the tension goes right out of it for some reason. It was disappointing.

And this is where you STOP if you don’t want to see any SPOILERS…

The good, the bad, and the ugly…and how much it lit up my life… ✰✰✰✰

I do enjoy this series. It’s light and fun with Mandy and Jackie paired as they are. And Rick along to make sure that Mandy stays alive and unhurt. This one is in a family run bakery which has just been handed to the daughter to run and the parents have gone off on holiday. Then Woody dies while eating this season’s special fruitcake. He remembers a couple of things he sees as he lays dying there on the floor of the bakery before he’s taken in the ambulance. The other lady passed out. The purple blooms. Those two items stuck in his mind. Later on, they become important, but almost too late to do any good. But no one sits him down and asks him if he remembers anything unusual, so I guess it’s their own fault.

There is this one character that is in on things, but I’m not sure what her purpose is really. I guess she does expedite things there a time or two. Her name is Madame Roloff. She’s known for her extra large hats and for being the logo on all sorts of expensive things, including buildings. She developed a chain of condotels (?) and is fantastically rich. She’s the client keeping Rick busy and why he isn’t working on this case with Mandy. But Madame Roloff is running around town with Mandy and Jackie sleuthing in her bright orange car.

I don’t know if I am simply not good at picking up on clues or if these books are really written so that the solution simply pops up at the end, but I never figure these out. I have a lot of fun going along with the puzzle and enjoy the characters immensely. I love Rick and Mandy as a couple. I like Mandy and Jackie paired up. But I really don’t see that they uncover enough to solve the case. It always seems to be something that they just sort of uncover at the end. This one was really out of the blue. Who had any clue there had been anything between Anna Linton and Woody Napolean once in the past? Woody certainly didn’t remember. That’s why she did it for heaven’s sake! Because he didn’t remember her. Yes, there was a mention of the purple flowers in the beginning. Other than that, I didn’t find any other clue about Anna Linton that indicated she had done this and for this reason. It’s just not fair for an author not to leave clues so that the reader can solve the crime as well.

Well, I still want to read all the ones I’ve missed in the series by jumping around as I have. I’m not sure if I’ll end up reviewing them all for the blog, but I want to at least read them.

This is a great book; this is the tenth book in the Paranormal in Manhattan Series written by Lotta Smith. This book can be read as a standalone, but once you read it you will defiantly want to go back and catch up with the other books in this series. The newlyweds Mandy and Rick are looking forward to their first Christmas in wedded bliss when the untimely death of a real estate developer puts a crimp in their plans. A bite of deadly dessert at a trendy bakery seems to be the culprit, and now the naughty ghost of Woody Napoleon is demanding justice. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

There is a lot to like with this series (clearly, as I just finished reading Books 1 through 23 straight-through). They are not complex plots. There isn't a lot of suspense or danger. There isn't always a lot of paranormal for a paranormal cozy. Truly, this author needs to find a competent editor or proofreader or someone to fix all the very many errors in the text. That normally drives me insane, so that I read on regardless is a testament to my having become attached to the characters. I find myself thinking that something just doesn't make sense, the plot doesn't hold together, but then I get caught up in the character interactions and just carry on. I was not enthralled with the addition of an precocious (of course) small child, but I guess that was inevitable, and the child has a pretty good handle on not being heard much of the time. This is light fare. Would I spend $60 for the series? No. But on KU? A fun vacation (or quarantine) read.

This is a very funny story. Rick and Amanda are hired to find out who killed a very disliked Woody Napoleon. He died at an event for MAAHA, that was catered by Charmed and Sprinkled bakery. Now no one is coming into the bakery, and Harriett is afraid to tell her parents that the business will be no more. While investigating his murder, Rick and Amanda is "helped out" by Amanda's BFF ghost Jackie AND Woody himself. Woody is not nice even as a ghost. He gropes young women at the Charmed and Sprinkled and belches something horrible. Only Amanda can hear him and Jackie, even though at times other 'think' they hear someone burping. Can Rick and Amanda save the bakery and get Woody off to the other side? Who killed him? There is a long list of suspects. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. The review is my own opinion

I have read all 10 books so far and now on book 11. When I started this series it seemed like it was the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series only with different names... Mandy had all the thoughts and the family and the joblessness the same as Stephanie with some minor differences. I thought it was sort of lame to copy the Plum series. I finished the first book and got into the second and then Mandy stood on her own, and I quickly got very interested in her story. This book is about a bakery frequented by Rick's potential client, and a sleazy con man falls off his chair after eating the seasonal favorite Fruitcake. Mandy, Rick, Jackie and the ghost of the victim are all on the hunt for his killer. Madam Rolff (future client) decides she wants in on the hunt. This book was fun and I am looking forward to future books.

A little bit of what you fancy can do you harm.

Terrific read even though the killer was obvious (the giveaway clue was completely ignored by our sleuths). Christmas preparations are interrupted by a new case - a haunted bakery. Could it possibly be the party attendee that died at the bakery a few days ago? Having a promise that they will leave once the killer is found the game of sleuthing starts. However not without the ghost and a major possible client. The new client is a wonderful mix of outrageous mixed with nuture. Whilst our regular sleuths are maturing well with every new book. The plot is well woven but the ending was a bit of a let down. Felt just a little bit rushed. Hope the new character can assist on more cases as she is as flamboyant as Jackie.

ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
It is Christmas time, and the murder weapon is a fruit cake.
Woody was not a popular guy, and his business dealing left a lot to be desired.
As the list of suspect increase, Mandy + Rick are trying their best to solve this case.
They all thought that he was murder because of his business transactions.
When they found out the real reason, it was a little bit of a shocker.
This story had a little bit of a twist in the end.
This series is always entertaining to read.
Loved the storytelling + the characters!

Well Mandy and Rick are settling down for their first Christmas and of course Jackie's hanging right there.
Ms. Smith didn't name this book "Nutter than a Fruitcake." Though she could have. She named it "Wicked as a Christmas Fruitcake." Since Mandy and Rick think they're going to have a quiet Christmas, of course there is a murder. And of course Jackie's here to help.
Woody Napoleon is dead. Poisoned with aconitine in the Fruitcake. Who had the means and the opportunity. Also why, why kill him.
All questions will be answered.

The series has its charm...

While I cringe and wince at the adolescent sentencing and forced use of vocabulary that sounds more like a replacement taken from a list of synonyms, this story did bring a smile or two to my face. Mandy is an extremely awkward conversationalist, and her inner dialogue is often more like middle school sentence diagramming. Everyone speaks with a discernible wooden quality, like a writer inserting sentences without any hint of the character's personality. They're all generic sentences, without individual personality traits. Very weird, but the plotline is often great. Just needs more natural rhythm and flow. Three stars.

Wicked as a Christmas Fruitcake

It’s the beginning of the holiday season and Rick, Mandy, and Jackie are ready for anything. At a party held at a bakery a real estate developer is killed using poison. Despite no trace of poison in the bakery, the Detective is focused in on one of the bakery assistants. It’s up to Mandy, one of USCABs wealthy clients, Jackie, and the ghost of the murdered man to find the perpetrator.

Well written with lots of laughs this is a welcome addition to this series.

Entertaining murder mystery. It was a quick read, but a struggle at times. It needs an editor to get rid of all the "look" beginning sentences and if one more character "rolled" their eyes I was ready to roll mine and delete this book off my kindle. It got really annoying. The mystery itself was okay, but the characters were pretty cardboard not much depth to them. I didn't like the husband as he used his wife when he wasn't getting his way and once she realized what he was doing it was oh well, isn't he good looking.

Another great book from Lotta Smith. I am so hooked on this series. The characters are believable and fun. They keep getting better with each one, if that's even possible. You have a great cozy mystery with the usual main characters and a ghost. You can't help but chuckle through out the book. They keep you guessing until the end. If you like a good cozy mystery then this series is for you. I received an arc copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving this review.

Christmas Crazy

Christmas time can drive some people to drink and others to kill. A wonderful bakery is doing a killer business until one of the their customers drops dead. Thankfully Amanda can talk to ghosts, and Jackie her BFF ghost is a big help in solving these whodunit s! Read and enjoy!

Always funny!

I loved Mandy and Rick as coworkers and dating but I love them married even more. Rick is a great guy and he treats Mandy like a queen. They have great chemistry and work well together. This time, Mandy pretty much takes the case by herself and gets some unasked for help from a client. It was funny, delightful and always entertaining.
