3.5 stars rounded up. This manga series is centred on the life and vicissitudes of Cestvs, a boy slave being trained to become a boxer for the entertainment of the masses at the Colosseum in 1st century A.D. Rome.
The artwork is good, showing that the mangaka, Mr Wazarai, did his homework and strove to depict the ancient city as faithfully as he could. The story, however, is surest to appeal to the action-loving portion of the readership. Those that love violent albeit well-crafted stories like the manga Berserk or the TV serials Spartacus; not so much to those interested in the period or craving a more character-driven yarn. Personally, I don't mind any of that, but my tastes just aren't inclined towards this type of story, in spite of loving Rome. This isn't as outrageously bloody on purpose as Spartacus used to be, nor was I able to find a glaring inaccuracy that'd boot me out of reading, so it's purely a matter of not feeling attracted to the plotline for me.
