African American socialite and bestselling crime writer Cayden Young returns to her high school stomping grounds to solve a cold case. Unfortunately, her hot business partner is in her way. In love since high school, they couldn’t work out their rich-girl, poor-boy differences. While she attempts to put the past to rest, she ends up unearthing a more than a decade-old secret that could get her killed.
Former Marine Levi Scott is ready to take over his family’s resort fulltime. The only problem is he needs to buy out his partner, who he happens to be in love with. Always on unsure footing with the wealthy beauty, he is determined to get her out of his life for once and all, and decides the best way to do so is offering to help her solve a thirteen-year-old cold case. Soon, they figure out the murderer may still reside in their posh resort town … and Cayden could be next on their list.
Amber Malloy dreamed of being a double agent but couldn't pass the psyche evaluation. Crushed by despair that she couldn't legally shoot things, Amber pursued her second career choice as pastry chef. When she's not writing or whipping up a mean Snickers Cheesecake, she occasionally spies on her sommelier. Amber is convinced he's faking his French accent.
One romantic suspense that had the hint of more. There was that banter, snark, secrets, mystery, friendship, differences, and someone trying to kill Cayden. I got more than I was anticipating. I was looking to get a good read but this one put me over the top. I was only to read a few chapters to get my feet wet and I ended up finishing the entire read in one sitting. These two friends but not friends from high school had opposites written all over them.
Cayden was the rich-girl from the right side of town and Levi was the bad-boy from the other side. Things could not have been set up for them to be more different. Cayden had made a name for herself as a crime writer. She came back home to her own very cold case and was working to find the answers. She just was not expecting that a different side venture would result in her obtaining a partner to figure this mystery out.
The trigger for me in this romantic suspense was that the female, Cayden, was the one that came from money. She was the one that had a great career and was going places. She was smart and resourceful. The female took lead character to a new high or at least set her on a different path than the majority of the female leads in romance reads. This was in no way a bad reflection on Levi. He was male after all. It was just different to see the woman take charge and move forward.
The resort here was more like a common denominator for the read. Levi wanted his family resort back and Cayden was the partner that he had to get rid of, not fall in love with.
A interesting story, a plot worth any detective story, some interesting characters also. Just a tad slow moving, but loved the ending.
Cayden Young is an African American socialite and bestselling crime writer, who returns to her hich school stomping grounds to solve a old murder that occurred when she was in high , her business partner is in her way now, he is also the man she has been in love for ages but somehow they could never overcome the rich girl poo boy. Former Marine Levi Scott is ready to take over his family’s resort full time. There is only one thing that stand in his way of running the Family business, and he needs to buy her out, but one thing stand in the way he is in love with her, and not very sure how to work around his feelings for her. As they work around their feelings and the murder case, things do get a bit dramatic, and her life and that or others hang in the balance.
Cayden Young and Levi Scott have been in love since high school, but they've never been able to get past the differences they have in her being rich and him being the total opposite. However, they're going to have to put aside their differences if Cayden has any hope of solving the cold case she's come to investigate and finally put the past to rest. Yet, as the pair get closer to the truth, the stakes get higher. Will Levi be able to protect Cayden, or will they lose their chance at happy ever after?
I love reading romantic suspense, and this story was a very engaging and thrilling read. Not only because it bounces back and forward from the past to the present and gives readers a wonderful amount of back story on how Cayden came into Levi's life and how much of a whirlwind their relationship over the years has been, but because there was a fantastic combination of suspense and romance that gripped my undivided attention from the very beginning. Will Cayden and Levi be able to work through their differences to finally get their happy ever after?
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, as their relationship has been a whirlwind of coming together and never being able to get over their differences; and the suspense, as someone does their best to scare Cayden and Levi off discovering the truth. Will the incidents on resort property be enough for Cayden to drop her investigation? Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave and I really liked her because she was so determined to crack the cold case because she feels justice should be served. I also liked how much of a challenge the heroine provided the hero and how she pushes him to the limits both in the past and the present since they have such strong chemistry. While the hero, he's been through a lot and I could understand why he wants to end their relationship for good because they can't keep fighting the fact that they are different in the heroine being a rich girl and him being a poor boy. Will either of them realize that love and happiness is important than money? Will they be able to overcome their differences to be together? I also liked how confident the hero was in his skills and how protective he was of the heroine. She couldn't go about solving the case without him, not when they both knew how dangerous things could get.
Overall, Ms. Malloy has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong; the romance full of heat and passion; and the ending had me worried for the main characters, but had me liking how everything worked out for the best between them. They've been through so much together and no way can they continue to let the other get away. Yet, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, as these two are finally happy together and I love how they teased the hero's mother, especially when they have such a good surprise. I would recommend Last Resort by Amber Malloy, if you enjoy romantic suspense, the opposites attract trope, or books by authors Tressie Lockwood, Kimberly Smith, Delaney Diamond and Dahlia Rose.
My favorite part of Last Resort was the characters, particularly the hero and heroine. Their banter and chemistry were fun to read. And even though I’m tired of the opposite ends of the tracks trope, it worked here because Cayden wasn’t a stereotypical heroine in this type of situation. Yes, she was wealthy, but she wasn’t some ingénue a la Uptown Girl (or Fifty Shades). On the other hand, she also wasn’t Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman. And even Levi wasn’t your stereotypical bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. This made the characters more realistic and fun to read about.
I also liked the suspense and mystery, as I was kept guessing up until the surprising end. However, while the plot was a strength, it was also the biggest weakness. The timejumps throughout the book were confusing and distracting at times. Less would have been more in this case, as too many kept pulling me out of the flow of the story and some seemed unimportant to write out. This helped lead to pacing issues which further pulled me out of the story.
All in all, Last Resort was a fun, quick read with charismatic characters and an intriguing mystery.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
This story is told over the course of several years – at least thirteen. Cayden is a wealthy, beautiful African American who meets Levi Scott for the first time when they are teenagers. They have immediate, magnetic chemistry but there are many complications and differences between them. Their banter is always lively and entertaining. The story moves back and forth through time as both their backstories slowly come out. Sometimes I found the skipping about disconcerting and a little confusing.
Cayden becomes obsessed with finding out who killed her best friend thirteen years ago. The case has gone cold but that just spurs Cayden to delve into the mystery with more determination than ever which winds up putting her in the killer’s cross-hairs. Levi tries to get her to back off but she convinces him over time to help her uncover the truth.
The romance overshadows the suspense a bit too much, in my opinion, but it was still an enjoyable read. I got a little tired of hearing about Cayden’s remarkable beauty and intelligence, but her character was likable more often than not. I was happy with the resolution and laughed at the ending.

This was as my first book by this author but it will not be my last. There was real dialogue in this book ( witty and snarky) just how I like it☺ You add murder, romance and high jinks what more could a good book need. The writing is similar to Shannon Diane in my opinion, which makes it worth a read. It was refreshing to have the female lead that was both financially independent and smart.
This is my first time reading anything from this author and I must say, I was stumped by this who done it. And that was a good thing. I think I'll read more books by this author
